While I'm fine with corridor shooting and hubs, I actually love open world (or semi-open world) games and combat. I just want those big maps to have more significant NPC interactions and general surprises in them, the virtual sensation of exploring a space instead of just running around for "miles" looking for loot and quest markers, killing the occasional too-familiar enemy. I won't forget the first time I played Oblivion way back in 2006 as a little girl 22 year old and feeling like I was really inside a game for the first time ever, and an addictive desire to explore it. It's just so different than what BW is doing here. Maybe open world just needs realism, I dunno. There is a game that manages a different style than Bethesda and yet still "populates" its open world very well -- but I won't mention it on this thread. I'm sure suikoden will do that eventually anyway. Well, technically, having a lot of interesting stuff in your open world isn't all that "realistic" in the first place. Skyrim strikes me as a lot more artificial than Morrowind, for instance. If you walk for 20 seconds in any direction you're going to stumble over either a sidequest or a marker leading to one, if not several. Morrowind makes you work for it. What most of us actually want, I think, are edited experiences. Or maybe curated is the right term. Not an actual simulation of a world, but the simulation with a lot of the dull stuff either cut out completely or made optional. (You can make a living as a miner and/or blacksmith in Skyrim, if you like, for instance .) Bio's problem is that the editing techniques for OW and non-OW games are different, and they don't have the same level of experience with OW. On a related note, the DAI designers did talk about intent for some areas. It sounded like the general design intent was to make areas difficult to navigate; a large part of the gameplay is mastering the intentionally frustrating terrain. (The Oasis is the far end of that curve.) I guess you could say that the stuff is secondary to getting to the stuff.

So if people think they aren't going to talk about the books/comics or dlc, then what could they talk about at that panel? Nothing much I imagine. Ill get the cliff notes version after work.

At this point, they'd better give something, because I'd love for them to shut up all of the naysayers and trolls devoted to whining about the game.
(And don't tell me that DLC news won't actually shut up those people; I know that but I'm happy to pretend for now.)

With 4 hours until ME:A Panel, @masseffect posted this:
Hmh... Hmm trying to get more new people into the game maybe? It sounds like they're pretty confident they have a "finished product" after 1.09.Minus one quest glitch for me, it's what should've been released on March 17th. It's a very good game. Hopefully, DLC will do what it did for Inquisition.

I absolutely hated that place especially the fact that they decided to make that women ( for some reason she put her ring in a cave) move in a place that only lets you go one way.

(The Oasis is the far end of that curve.) I guess you could say that the stuff is secondary to getting to the stuff. When I say 'realism' here I really just talking about graphics and perspective: first person perspective instead of controlling a PC (at least the option of that...) and everything being eye-level with you, realistic textures and lighting (as detailed and 'real' as they can get for the graphics of the time), etc... As opposed to the style of DAI, where you feel like you're controlling a character because you're pretty tiny and zoomed out, and also everything is a little too bright and cartoonish. So you feel like you're actually walking around. I definitely don't want to be working as a blacksmith, or doing the survival modes in FONV or FO4, where you can't fast travel and need to eat and drink... Skyrim is a little too jam-packed, I agree.

I see it. How do you rank ME:A's realism level, in those terms? Pretty low, about the same as DAI. Maybe DAI slightly more immersive for wandering around/exploring, and MEA slightly more immersive for combat. ETA: just realized the word I'm looking for to describe what makes open worlds work best for me is "immersive"

I see it. How do you rank ME:A's realism level, in those terms? Every title has a very high level of realism for me. For me, Inquisition and Andromeda on the Frostbite canvas, is the next step of "realism." The storytelling is strong in the older titles which helped make up for the lower-end graphics of older engines. However, some of the dialogue and the noticeable issues with the story are on par with the original trilogy. Anyone stating otherwise hasn't taken off their rose-colored glasses and just adamant that Andromeda is not up to standard. For me, I took a long enough break from Andromeda to play the original trilogy all over again. When I came back, patch 1.09 turned Andromeda into a very good game. However, history isn't going to remember 1.05 or 1.09. March 17th is what people are going to remember and you can bet we'll be here again when DA4 arrives.

Yay! I'll have to figure how to install it now. And I don't worry about Ryder running around in casual clothes like I did with Shepard. I mean, Ryder is far from military.

It's not the matter of liking or disliking companions - they are just BADLY WRITTEN, same as main story - which is boring and predictable at many points. Most of you are blaming development process, animations, unexperienced staff and not green enough trees - MEA problem is WRITING QUALITY - immature dialogues, weak plots - no patch can change that ! No wonder that Anthem suddenly got Drew Karphyshyn, one of the very few writers in BW who always keep high quality writing standards. I still don't understand why people keep saying me a has immature dialogue. The dialogue sounds fine to me. Replay OT and you will see a difference. A HUGE difference.

God forbid you portray young people accurately in a game about a ragtag bunch of greenhorns with zero experience... Shepard is already a seasoned 30 year old LT. Apart from Tali in ME1 everyone is very experienced, even Garrus have been on his job for some time. So yes it was kinda funny how no one seems to give a shit to what Scott said in my game during those briefings, made it all the more nice when he starts to control Remant ships with his mind without SAM. Like he is finally filling his father's shoes.

No, they have to earn that respect, and Ryder does earn the respect of his/her crew as you advance in the game. What people call "bad writing" is actually "this writing doesn't suit my tastes" and they refuse to see that.
