Well looks like that can of worms has been opened with this DLC. Bunch of people already spoiling stuff right in thumbnails so be careful browsing the net. I saw it. I saw a couple of other clips as well so this "romance" is optional, flash burn. There's no permanent tie. Choose a line and Aloy will say she has a lot on her shoulders, she doesn't have time to think of anything else. Almost what she said to Avad in the first game. Also saw other clips which makes me shake my head. It reminds me of the AC Odyssey DLC; the First Blade. It's the same start off; a relationship that fires up really fast if the player goes for it. Not the kind of relationship I envision for Aloy because the kind of tie she needs has to be built up slowly first. But the writers shot one option dead because I was thinking Varl was a good pairing for her. Avad is plausible if he could get more screen time to show that he could hold his own in a fight and highlight other aspects of his character. Erend's problem, huge problem, is that he hits the bottle too easily. What the devs didn't do in this DLC relationship is to seal it so Aloy is free to make a choice in the third and final installment of this series. The devs for AC Odyssey sealed it for the player because story wise, canon, Kassandra's bloodline has to continue which is fine with me as I want Kassandra to have descendants. There will be no continuation of the hybrid bloodline otherwise. My problem is that Natakas arrived too late and received too little screen time. Edit. I was additionally think; well, Aloy could die in the next one and that'll leave Beta. Or Beta will die. Or both clones die which makes relationships pointless. 😅 Or the devs kill off all the male options, leaving female options in which case, for me, I wouldn't make any choice. Aloy can live to be an old maid. 🤣 And alas once more it seems like Guerilla games does not know the meaning of this whole 'RPG' thing they claim their games as.

Finished the Burning Shores dlc. I will give a review later. Here's an image with Sylens mentioning a possible way to deal with Nemesis.

I finished the main story of Burning Shores today. It was pretty damn epic. I'll try to consolidate some thoughts, but they might be a bit "stream of consciousness" in presentation. Any spoilers will go into spoiler blocks. Aloy has come a very long way from fighting Watchers and Scrappers in the Embrace. While the growth is meteoric, I appreciate that it's come at a reasonable pace and through exposure to new machines, cultures, and technologies. The gameplay continues to improve, too. This series is just so damn good. Forbidden West is a stunning game in nearly every way. I will say that the clouds, while awesome, were not important enough to make this PS5 exclusive. (They were essential to only a single side quest.) Rather, I bet the exclusivity choice was made due to a combination of things. The Waterwing zipping through the sea might've been too much for the PS4. Some of the set pieces, and the final battle in particular, might've been too much. Someone knows, but not I. 🤷🏻♂️ In regard to Burning Shores' characters, I really like Seyka. I enjoyed having her along. Playing on Ultra Hard, she wasn't very much help, but I bet she kicks ass on lower difficulties. She has a broad arsenal and fights intelligently. More importantly, she's just a lot of fun. Her actress, Kylie Liya Page, killed it. This was her first time doing performance capture, and she was great. I really enjoyed the villain. I was skeptical, but figured they'd make it cooler than it sounded, and they did. The villain's entire plan was a mixture of perfectly logical and suitability villainous. Stopping the scheme led to some epic fights. The new machines are an awesome pain in the butt. The small machine is deceptively dangerous. The big machine is high on the power scale, and punches above its weight due to it's ability to tip the scales in its favor. The battle at the end of Cauldron Theta (yes, there's a cauldron) went from smooth sailing to incredibly epic marathon in short order. I'll be more careful, next time. 😆 Okay, some character spoilers I kind of expected that Aloy would be presented with a female love interest ever since Elizabet's orientation was revealed. When I saw how pretty Seyka was, I thought she might be it. Once I got to meet her in-game, I knew it was probably happening.
Yeah, the progressed pretty quickly, given that this is a single DLC story, but I thought it was well presented. Aloy dealing with her first crush was cute. She went from "What am I feeling?" to "I think I like this girl" to "I do really like this girl." It was adorable, IMO, and well done. I'm sure some won't like it, but they can always poo-poo it at the end.
I was always curious as to whether Aloy might settle in Meridian for a time and return Avad's interest. Now that I've seen how differently Seyka affects her, though, I hope the ladies get a chance to see where things might go. It's a game, so I guess the real question for the final installment is, "Why not both?, though not in the same playthrough, of course. 😋
The first time she verbalized anything, asking herself, "Why do I care so much about Seyka's feelings?", I fast-traveled back to the Base. It turns out that Aloy still talks to Varl about her feelings, and misses his advice. ☹️ I had her talk to him about it twice, at different stages. I miss him, too.
Sylens. Man, I love Sylens. It really seemed that he was becoming even more integral to the team effort. It makes me mourn Lance Reddick just a bit more. Voice actors should be perfecting their Reddick-voice now. I'm sure Guerilla would prefer not to write-out such a great and important character. If someone can master Sylens' voice, they can secure a pretty cool role.
RIP, Lance.
Okay, that was a lot of typing. Now, on to story and machine spoilers... Man, Walter was a true egomaniac. I loved this guy as a villain. He must've assumed that Aloy could negate his shield. Otherwise, he might've just faced her and killed her. He outsmarted himself using that Horus.
The Horus fight was a lot of fun. Doing everything for the first time on Ultra Hard was brutal, but I only died a handful of times throughout the entire DLC. I usually managed to slide, dodge, and weave my way through. Anyway, the Horus -- I didn't know how she'd fight it, but the trailers implied that we would. I think it was pretty believable, within the context of the outrageous game world. It's a long, long way from luring and spearing Watchers in HZD.
The Bilegut is a dangerous bastard. The Apex Bilegut in the cauldron was crazy. I tied it down and disabled nearly all of its tools snd weapons very quickly. I made two mistakes: One, I tried to preserve its Blaze Sacs for the mesh. Two, I carelessly triggered some Stingspawm eggs and turned an easy fight into an epic battle. Those little shits are a real pain in combo with their daddy. Yikes.
Alright, I'm sure I have more to say, but I'm trying to keep even my spoilers here less revealing than they could be. I'll gladly engage in detailed discussion as more people finish it and want to discuss it. I definitely enjoyed it, and still have more stuff to do before it's fully enjoyed. I kind of hope that we get one more expansion to this game, but I don't think it's necessarily likely. This one took some time to reach the market, and I imagine they're going to focus on the next game now. I do like the threads revealed at the end of Burning Shores. Edit: I did think of one thing I left out -- the new Zenith weapon suuuucks. Maybe it's good on Normal or Hard, but it's weak as heck on Ultra Hard. I used it occasionally, and will do so again, but it's not at all impressive. It's kind of disappointing, given how powerful it looked when it was used against Aloy. It makes sense, though. They don't want to undermine half her arsenal with a high-tech toy. Still, it could use a buff.

I just saw that the Review Bombers are swarming "Burning Shores". These people are pathetic.
If I had to guess, I'd assume it's a mixture of Seyka-haters, "Elden Ring" boys (who still have a twisted, unhealthy beef with HFW), and persons disgruntled that it's PS5 exclusive.
I don't understand behavior like this. That's probably because I'm not a spiteful little punk. It's sad to see.

But you are indeed right, it is sad to see. Social Media and platforms like Youtube since it expanded from simple content sharing to content creation with allowing, or even paying people to speak their minds on any range of topics....It has given people with the smallest minds and opinions that are really not worth hearing, a stage and microphone to voice their opinions quite loudly. And it's just sad to see that often it is these people whose small and narrow opinions, and loud voices often dominate the space and then in time become the prevailing thought on the topic. Enough that it then drowns out any other people who may have positive thoughts on the given matter. And in the end, sadly it is the loud negativity that often reaches the Developers first or most prevelently....and that in turn influences their decisions for any future content or projects. The prime example of this is the Gaming Community.

Definitel ythe game I enjoyed most tha tyear when it released durin gthe pandemic as it was one of the few games that kep tme going as I liked Aloy and th ewor5ld she was in and the sarcastic way she handled things at times and it was an intresting story She definitel yhad a way of doing things. ah yes, review.
The characters that Aloy encounter are ok. The outfits and weapons are good. A bit better than the legendary stuff from the main game. It's too bad couldn't have the outfit the Admiral wears. I like his. The outfit I got from completing a side quest early in the dlc Aloy wore for the rest of the dlc. There's a new material, Brimstone. To get all the legendary items, a lot of Brimstone is needed. I did not use the Zenith weapon. No reason too. So I can't say how well it works. I might use it if/when I start a new game plus to get the ultra hard trophy. The waterwing robot was cool. Flying underwater I like. The boat or as I call it, The SS Horizon Dawn ship was very handy for getting around on the water.
The villain. Walter Londra. He has to be the center of attention. That was annoying. When I first saw him, I thought of Dorain from DAI. The boss fight was...easier than I thought. I understand the Horus was not at full power, rusted for the last thousand years with foliage growing on it, but still, the fight wasn't that hard. I didn't agree having Londra die. He would have been a very valuable asset to help when Nemesis arrives.
I'm still playing the dlc to get the last few trophies. I know this is a lame review. 8.9/10
What do I foresee for the next game? When talking with Sylens at the end, he tells Aloy Londra believed there might be something on Earth that could stop Nemesis. He gives a few names of companies that have stuff that Nemesis would not know about. No idea where they're located.

themikefest, the Spectre Gauntlet isn't great on Ultra Hard. It has its uses, but they're very niche. I used it for two things. First, I killed 5 Chargers while hovering to get the trophy. Secondly, it's a decent long-range sniper. Its ammo is very inexpensive to craft, and costs the same to craft on the go as it does at a workbench. If you paint the target with the weapon technique, you can then use the railgun function to get good weakpoint damage. It's not on par with top-shelf Sharpshot damage, but it's way more affordable if you're trying to conserve Volatile Sludge (or shards) between restocks. I completed the trophies, today. I enjoyed the side content. This stuff works better in Horizon than in most series, in my opinion. These little quest chains always add flavor. Sometimes, it's a story from the past. Other times, it's something contemporary. Either way, they're fun to me. I sharpshot-sniped a Bilegut from atop a ruined tower. (Take that, you hopping PitA!) Its little Stingspawn buddies would come to find me after each attack. I destroyed its ability to make more and then destroyed the extant buggers. Leaving the sac webbing intact, I easily and safely destroyed it from afar. I did some hunting to fully upgrade "The Tie That Binds", the new Legendary Utaru Ropecaster. It's extremely useful against machines that are powerful or obnoxious (looking at you, Clamberjaws). I had already fully upgraded "Gravesinger's Lament", another Utaru weapon. This one is a Legendary Sharpshot bow with very high Impact damage and Strike-through arrows (armor-piercing). It's a great tool to have against armored humans in particular, as well as against armored machine components. I've actually shelved "Forgefall", the first Legendary Sharpshot we can acquire, and stripped it of its mods. Between "Gravesinger's Lament" and "Iriv's Downfall" (the NG+ Sharpshot) I have all my Sharpshot needs covered. A common upgrade component is the Luminous Brainstem. There's a place where a Slaughterspine and Thunderjaw are hanging together. Override one and watch the Slaughterspine get wrecked. (It's the tougher machine, but it's poorly equipped to fight a T-Jaw.) Afterward, I kill the weaker Thunderjaw. This usually delivers at least one Luminous Brainstem. I think I will keep playing around in the Burning Shores for a time. I kind of want to upgrade the new Hunter bow, "The Emperor's Reign". IIRC, it will top out with even higher Tear Damage than "Tears of the Land-god". TER has Berserk ammo, which can be useful. TotL has Purgewater, which is very useful. They're both strong contenders to sit atop my weapon wheel as my primary Hunter. I'll probably keep TER equipped unless I need Purgewater, and then swap it for TotL. (Time to check my inventory of Tear mods and maybe visit the vendors.) Oh, and I also want to upgrade the new Warrior bow, "Eye of the Storm". It has Fire, Chill, and Acid arrows. They might apply elemental states nicely when used with Burst or Spread techiques. If I weren't packing up my home for a move, I'd probably jump into another NG+. As it is, I'll likely just mess around for a while, upgrading gear until I'm in my new place in a month.

I think I'm about finished with Burning Shores. I played for a couple of hours today.
I discovered another little Old World treasure in a ruined high-rise: a cute note from a little girl to "whoever finds this note," and a toy bow with arrows.
Mostly, I farmed Luminous Brainstems. It's not as boring as it sounds. I destroyed a couple of Bileguts, but mostly I pit a Slaughterspine and Thunderjaw against one another. After, I'd destroy whichever won (almost always the Thunderjaw). I once got zero Brainstems, usually got one, and sometimes got two.
I also found some nice stashes that included Luminous Brainstems, so I made out really well on those. I used them to fully upgrade almost all of the new Legendary weapons.
Those left require no additional components from Burning Shores that I haven't already acquired. I'll upgrade them fully during my next NG+. Predictably, I mostly need a bunch of Luminous Brainstems, which I can get during the course of the main game.
I look forward to seeing my newest weapons in action against different machines, so I might mess around a bit more before packing the PS5. Stormbirds and Slaughterspines beware my new spikethrower! I have +100% knockdown power on the drill spikes. 😈

Put in a little over an hour, today. I decided to go ahead and get a few more upgrades finished.
"Eye of the Storm" is an elemental warrior bow. I have it up to tier 3, now, and need only 4 Luminous Brainstems and 3 Brimgleam to max it at 5.
I had some entertaining Slaughterspine vs Thunderjaw fights, today. Once, they each destroyed the another with their final attacks. When I scuttled down from my hiding place to scavenge, I found no LBs and two hostile Sunwings. I sprinted and jumped off the nearest cliff and called my Waterwing.
Twice, they mangled one another so badly that I destroyed the survivor with a single attack. After a rare Slaughterspine win, I froze it and dropped it with a single toss of Explosive Splitting Spikes.
I read that I have a Jurassic Park movie to thank for this abusable setup with these two in one spot. I'm assuming there was a scene in which their inspirational counterparts fight. It sure makes for easy, entertaining scavenging.
I also fully upgraded the ammo pouch for the Spectre Gauntlet. The final stage required an Apex Bilegut Heart. I found a place where a standard Bilegut and an Apex were together. Overriding the standard, I had a partner to keep the Stingspawn busy while I disarmed the Apex. Once I destroyed its Egg Lanchers, I just tied it down and destroyed it with sustained burst from my Boltblaster.
I found that I use override less frequently in Forbidden West than in Zero Dawn. I think it's probably due to the ubiuity of Apex machines. (They are HEPHAESTUS' black-armored, gold-sinewed, purple-glow, elite hunter-killers. They are essentially the "daemonic" machines of Frozen Wilds, but with a much better name and visual design.) As you destroy more and more machines, HEPHAESTUS starts producing more Apex versions. If you've destroyed as many as I have, you rarely see anything but Apex machines.
It's fun to see a more balanced mix in the Burning Shores. The counter must be turned off or reset in this region. Otherwise, I'd see only Apex models of everything but the Bileguts and Waterwings. Whatever the case, it's a lot if fun to bring allies back into the fights.

Yeah, seeing a bunch of 0’s on Metacritic only reinforces my insistence on simply staying away from that site since there’s little of value for me to get out of it. Anyone who’s actually played the thing would understand why their PS4’s would catch an aneurysm just trying to render clouds, and by the forge is it nice to actually soar through them. Overall I’m particularly fond of this DLC, and it actually got me to do a fresh playthrough after some time away. I’m anxious to see how they follow this up, especially with the loss of Lance Reddick. I’ve seen people suggesting that he could be replaced with something like respeecher or a recast to fill in any work he hadn’t done yet, but this is the thing that concerns me the most given Sylens’ importance.

This is the longest review I've ever seen. 😄
The story thus far for #1 and #2 has been a logical narrative with consistent character development for the protag, Aloy. From an outcast to discovering her origins to accepting who she is to realising she does not stand alone in her goal to save the Earth and everyone else.
The only thing I'm hoping for now is that Guerilla do not drop the ball for the final installment. They're down to the last stretch. I'm cheering 🎉 for them to cross the finish line with style and triumph and win the trophy for an outstanding trilogy.

As it is, I'm disappointed the devs took this route in the DLC. The rest of the DLC content is fine; new machines, etc etc.

In a way it would be similar to what happen with Banuk. He disappears never to be seen again.

I’d understand why they’d do it considering how difficult it would be to handle his character without the actor, but Sylens is one of those characters that just feels like he warrants more. It’s gonna be a long wait in bated breath to see how they pull it off.

If anyone didn't explore Murmuring Hollow Relic Ruins on the Burning Shores, they should. Just saying. And *spoilers*...

I don't believe it will be hard to have Sylens not in the next game. After completing the Burning Shores dlc, he tells Aloy what he plans to do. If anything, what could happen is GAIA receives messages from Sylens throughout the game updating his progress of what he has/might have found to stop Nemesis passing passes those messages to Aloy. In a way it would be similar to what happen with Banuk. He disappears never to be seen again. They could do that, but I’m not sure how to feel about a sendoff that basically has him vanish. I’d understand why they’d do it considering how difficult it would be to handle his character without the actor, but Sylens is one of those characters that just feels like he warrants more. It’s gonna be a long wait in bated breath to see how they pull it off. I would probably find this very unsatisfying. Sylens has been a very important presence through both games. Aloy, and therefore all life on Earth, never could've made it very far without Sylens. That final scene really drove home the way he's beginning to change and grow. I saw introspection and an effort to be more than an intellectual peer and colleague. It might seem a small thing, but it was huge for Sylens to reach out in that small way. It seemed a first step in embracing humanity and community. It's heartbreaking that Lance wasn't able to finish this character's journey (and of course his own much longer journey in real life with his family and all whom he touched). I really hope they're able to find a way to complete Sylens' story without reducing it. He's an awesome character, and I expect that his contributions would be critical in the finale.

Loaded up my Forbidden West save to play around with photo mode again... On the loading screen, there is bright star in the sky. I don't care if you correct me, but I like to think that it's Nemesis, slowly approaching Earth. Still far away, but close enough to be visible in the sky.

Ok, PS players, sell me the Forbidden West game. Releasing in less than two months on PC - is it worth the full price?
First game was mixed for me. I liked the premise, the robots and most of the combat. But overall the quests and story pacing were mediocre to weak. Kinda lost the steam midway and felt like a chore to play to the end. Great graphics though.
What's better in FW? What's worse or the same?

The story of Forbidden West is weaker imo. I thought the villains were a bit of a clown show. Combat is more difficult. So going by your opinion on the first game, you might want to wait for a sale. Or even not buy and move on. Then again maybe you'll like it better than the first game. Gameplay is improved for sure. World is very beautiful.

Story didn't grab you? OK, hmmm... I found it super emotional. I cried at the end. I like when a game has the same attention to the quality of the main and side content. Which usually means the side quests should be interesting and help expand the world building (like in KOTOR, ME2, DA2, etc).
In HZD the side content was...kinda just there. It rarely felt like a part of the main narrative. And was more of a running around than trying to tell a story.
And as I always do the side content alongside the main quest, there was a general disappointment in the whole story experience. The main story was better, but it couldn't compensate the lack of good side stories. I'd rather have "good side content+good main story" rather than "weak side content+great main story". And HZD was more like "weak side content+good (not great) main story".
