Late to the party but \o. I am a fanfic author and also working on an original scifi/cyberpunk story.
Fanfics I write are mostly ME, ME:A, and I have a long-running OC Star Trek series. The Mass Effect stuff is published, but the Star Trek stuff is going through a re-write and remains offline.
I'm always at work when ideas come to me. I've been guilty of taking off early just to work on an idea.

Don’t you hate that feeling that you had a wonderful idea in your head, but when you try to write it out it comes across as gibberish?

Interesting, but there were major punctuation problems that distracted me from the writing. I'm always leery of taking writing advice from someone who ignores the nuts and bolts of language.
The question is one that plagues me, however. How much is showing and how much is belaboring the point just so you feel like you're showing rather than telling? Sometimes I feel like I go down a rabbit hole of trying too hard to show and it just bogs down the story I wanted to tell.

The most perfect grammatically correct story but be as boring as paint. Whereas a lot of famous writers their own ticks. On the second point you can tell whatever you want. As long as you back it up or not in story. For example you can say so and so has a good heart and they give an apple to an orphan then that means one thing. But if that character takes an apple from an orphan it means something else entirely.

first off the and bolts of writing does not help one write. The most perfect grammatically correct story but be as boring as paint. Whereas a lot of famous writers their own ticks. Knowing the nuts and bolts does help one write, in that readers can more easily discern whether your story is brilliant or boring as paint. Writers having their own tics is fine, but it helps immeasurably to know the rules of grammar before you start breaking them. You may have a nifty story, but if you can't be bothered to try and exercise at least some reasonable consistency with spelling and punctuation and all those other, boring grammatical things, or you think you're the second coming of ee cummings and are above the tyranny of capitalization, then I fear I can't be bothered to wade my way through the sticky morass of your writing searching for the nifty bits. If you're weak in the nuts and bolts dept., there are many free, online programs to help with that, so there's really no excuse. Save

I haven't yet learned everything it can do, but it's extremely useful for organizing long works. My latest is 278K with about 35 characters, and Scivener's made it possible to easily work on and keep track of everything. It was definitely worth getting. Save

It's handy. I've got all these separate word documents for single pieces of fiction. The main document, the character list document, the fragment document, the research document. With Scrivener I've got them all in one place and I can click on which one I want like changing an internet tab.

Finished an ME one shot this weekend and posted, though I have been guilty of going through and making minor edits when I catch them. Really love when everything I want to say just happens. Might expand on the story a bit later in the week.

I've finished drafting my short story, then, a few hours later, realized that I really want to write more about these characters in this setting. It's going end up like a mess because the setting is not going to hold together, but it is fun... so, I guess, back to typing and see where it's going to explode in my face.

Thanks for mentioning this, didn't know such things existed and after a short bit of research it seems to have a lot of good features. I just might get this sooner or later.

Here's a little tutorial, should you need one. Also, one of my favorite writing blogs, "Helping Writers Become Authors," did a series on how to build your own really functional format.

That moment when you're switching character POV between two different narratives and then say to yourself... Who am I again?

Whatever I throw up on FFN, tend to be a 'jumble' of visions and ideas (I don't write it down and plan. It's a straight out splash paint on the wall, so to speak) so sometimes there're silly and stupid parts in it. It's by no means, the finalised version. I spent more than two years editing and correcting parts of the first MET fic so it's more cohesive. Since I warned readers in advance, I didn't get a lot of coconuts. Recently, I took down three chapters of the second MET sequel for a makeover. I've been thinking it over and re-reading it and found it seriously wanting. The impact of the events were also weak. Not sure when I'll finish it, kind of having a block at the moment. It has been there for a few months.

Heh, I outlined the chapter plan, and I will be short of the target 50K words if I can finish it, but likely over 40K. I am tired of all the doom and gloom, and pseudo historic realism, so I ended up with a completely and unappologetically historically inaccurate romp with pirates, demons, super-awesome pistols, evil fairies, not so oppressed female and a touch of a bodice ripper. Looks like fun, but I always wrote under 10K only, so yeah, I dunno. It’s a lot to keep it together.

I start out to tell something really cool, and end up with two pages of chick fic psychobabble that is boring as hells because I need to build the scene up and explain what's what and who's who.
