I got to the point when my chapter 1 started to balloon up with too much background, so I re-trimmed it, and submitted to the workshop. It gives me three weeks till I have to start redrafting it based on the comments.
I am going to take a day or two critiquing other folks' writing & then attack Chapter 2. I have lots of notes and a mishmash of scenes in my mind for it. It has a lot of magic after a completely non-magic Chapter 1, and has a character I must keep down as an obviously secondary char.
I keep running into this problem of worrying that as soon as I introduce and describe a character he or she will stand out too much and would come across as one of the mains.
Of course, I also spend a lot of time worrying about the thing being a complete crap & way inexperienced on the plot side, but I decided that I am going to have to live with that.

I made my first comic strip using paint stick figures in the Paintquisition thread. It's a scene that had been on my mind for months. And because of the very low standard that is stick figures in paint, I finally got it out of my head.
This kinda translates well to the Writing zones of "just write, and edit later" that I am habitually terrible at.

Bollox! You can't be a great writer unless you are 'crazy, a drunkard, have no money, have too much money, your life is blasted with tragedy, you must have a gambling problem, you must have worked in a blacking factory as a child, you must have been imprisoned in a work camp.'

Been in a mood for Keri T'Vessa lately. Worked on a pair of fics I'm writing for her, and some dialogue one-shots to develop her relationship with Alex. More for her planned tonight.

Almost done with a chapter in Sloane/Addison fic. Addison made me cry. I'm slightly scared, but also intrigued.

Almost done with a chapter in Sloane/Addison fic. Addison made me cry. I'm slightly scared, but also intrigued. Be afraid...be very afraid ahahahaha. Actually, it's not as bad as it seems. Doing a slight rework to add a few chapters, and I need to change up Addison's storyline a little. I won't post the link here because I did slap a Mature rating on it and it contains Uprising spoilers. If you don't mind spoilers or have read Uprising, it can be found on Archive Of Our Own, under the title of Melody Of Fools. I'm posting it piece by piece as a WIP. So far, it's the most rewarding thing I'm writing. Writing Sloane, in particular, has challenged me quite a bit.

Actually its funny you should menton that because it is one of the reasons I am doing this like this. Since I am editing book 1 with my fiancee, and since her time is limited, I will start writing book 2 to ultimatley make the production of both books that much faster. And since I am on Patreon and certainly trying to release weekly chapters that does demand I have content already in the pipeline to start writing, editing, and then posting. I don't think people normally write books this way, but I'm also itchy to actually write again.

And since I am on Patreon and certainly trying to release weekly chapters that does demand I have content already in the pipeline to start writing, editing, and then posting. I don't think people normally write books this way, but I'm also itchy to actually write again. Nice productivity! I am very slow normally. Been actually even slower with chapter 2 this weekend. By some reason English was hard, and I had to endlessly re-edit not for any niceties but simply to have a half-decent grammar. Usually my proficiency is enough to carry me through the first draft before editing, but, boy, it was terrible. Maybe it was because I am really interested in the magic introduction in the setting, and the location, the Pagoda of a Thousand Fleeting Thoughts, which plays a role of the mage’s Tower in my story, and I am subconsciously in a hurry to type it out and see the whole chapter click into place. But, I still want it readable too before a re-edit or I will confound even myself. So, only slightly over 2K words, and barely through the first of three major sequences I want in the chapter. The Apprentice character I want reoccurring but secondary does get a bit too much spotlight, but I have also added a bit more for him throughout the entire outline and redid the ending to enhance his role in it. It makes more sense now, and, I think, will have a more exciting outcome for the two main characters, with my gal being less anemic and more in keeping with the genre. I also, thanks goodness, managed to add events and scene ideas in a couple of the outlined chapters that had huge gaps and “something, something” sort of placeholders. There are a couple of chapters that give me a headache in terms of what happens there, so I will have to hold the horses and write them carefully instead of rushing past the content that I don’t really felt my way through and need for moving the plot forward. And, yep, I also decided that it is cheesy anyway, so I will just go ahead and plug in "chi" instead of a prim "life force" I was using. eh, well, I swear I do not intend to offend by being a shallow prevvy Asia fancier who knows nothing.

Im gonna have a completely unnecessary and entirely illogical rant about antagonists because idk reasons I think that far too many books, movies, games etc have very very bad antagonists, sooooo im gonna say some things that I feel dont make good antagonists and what really bothers me about when people write them badly So things I think dont make good antagonists Non-Sentient Antagonists: I mean things like weather, natural disasters, zombies, diseases... it isnt that these are things which cant be done well, but its just that I dont feel as if theyre good antagonistic things. My first problem is that they have absolutely no personal connection to the protagonist(s), and that they are mostly always passive. They cant really react to anything the protagonist does, or be usually solved. They just ARE. And most have become REALLY overdone. Not only that, but the threat of those things is generally poor. What I mean by that is death is usually the worst thing that can really happen, and millions/billions have ALREADY died. It devalues the threat to the characters when death happens so often and thats generally the worst thing that can happen. And it doesnt help things where characters are known to die in these things, and it often means that people wont get emotionally invested. Destroying The World/Galaxy/Universe/Whatever: In sci-fi on a galactic or universal scale destroying a planet can be alright (well...), but when you have an antagonist/villain who wants to destroy the world that they live on for whatever reason, it creates a false sense of tension and escalation. It just doesnt WORK. Not only is it a cliché thing for an antagonist to do but no matter what you cant really have the world being destroyed. No matter whether the antagonist or the protagonist is victorious in whatever they want to do, reaching a satisfying conclusion either way is kinda the goal, even if it ends on a cliff-hanger. The problem is that theres no satisfying conclusion if an antagonist destroys the world/galaxy/whatever when thats where all the story is set. Not unless whatever is destroyed is part of a larger whole, but still, cliché. The Creep: Ok, what I mean by this is when authors/writers/developers whatever design an antagonist, and then add something to play on peoples (or SOME peoples) idea of ew like incest or homoerotic stuff, or if theyre a guy they might make the antagonist very feminine, or if its a girl they might make her very masculine. Having disabled antagonists is also an example of this. My problem is that it plays on what people find unusual, and often exploits it in an unfair way. Even a semi-decent antagonist doesnt need any of those things, and its a sign of a bad writer AND a bad antagonist when theyre resorted to. I have no problem with a disabled person, as an example, being a villain. None at all. Its fair in a way that everyone can be shown to be antagonists, because like... everyone is an antagonist in the eyes of someone else in some way. But you kinda have to ask whether its necessary for a character, whether it adds anything to the narrative, or if its just trying to manipulate peoples emotions and dislike for the unusual in a way. Iirc there have been some directors/writers (cant remember exactly) that have admitted to doing this, but I think its just kinda stupid. The Stupid Plan: Lots of antagonists recently/generally have TERRIBLE goals, and even worse ways of achieving them. *cough* Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman *cough* My problem is: Long, convoluted plans which rely entirely on luck isnt something ANYONE is gonna do. And when I see antagonists with these stupid plans which really wouldnt/doesnt work, I think 2 things: 1. The whatever entertainment media is happens to be is poorly written and 2. Theyve obviously focused all their attention on the protagonists and forgot about the antagonist which is as equally important narratively. The Stupid Logic: Kinda linked. There are lots of antagonists who are evil because theyre evil and thats... kinda it. In The Flash, the Reverse-Flash says that he once loved The Flash and wanted to be him, then became a speedster and saw into his future where he was The Flashs greatest enemy, so... decided to become the reverse of him??? Something like that. As much as I LOVE the Reverse Flash and think hes awesome in the tv show, his reasons for doing everything he does is TERRIBLE. As another example: In suicide squad, Enchantress says something like "the humans no longer worship us, they worship machines. So ill build a machine to destroy them all" BECAUSE THAT MAKES SENSE, YUP. GOOD LOGIC. My point is that antagonists are often the protagonists of their own stories, no matter what they do to try and justify themselves. But theres a point where the justification makes no sense, and its a writing issue, basically. I guess my overarching point is that antagonists should be treated like a second protagonist, just opposing the first one. They need a sense of progression and their own subplots to really shine in my opinion. Too many people are lazy in writing their antagonists and/or villains and it ALWAYS bothers me. Erm, probably to be continued at some point...

GeneralXIVI don't really disagree with anything you say in particular, but the clichés do work once in a while, and manage to win one over. It's not that you can't use them, imo, it's you should be extremely good to pull it off. My personal dislike in the antagonist departments is reserved for the a) redeemable or tragically misunderstood emo villains, and the topsy-turvy ones that are usually knightly/honorable characters that turn to be like really evil because they pursue the "order" and the "happiness for all" etc. So, I see a chase for the "unusual" or "non cliché" villain to result in just creating a new cliché

Im gonna have a completely unnecessary and entirely illogical rant about antagonists because idk reasons *snip* Erm, probably to be continued at some point... You forgot one that drives me crazy: The Hero: This antagonist is superior to the protagonist in every way, but falls apart at the final confrontation or something like that. The protagonist wins out due to plot armor or raw luck.

As evident by my choice of avatar, I tends towards Affably Evil, Well-Intentioned Extremist anti-villains. That is, characters who have a noble, even altruistic goal but are willing to pursue immoral means to obtain them. What's specifically important for me is that they need to have some form of self-awareness that what they are doing is evil, or at least can be seen as evil by the hero. They don't cackle in their blind villainy; they fully comprehend what they are and accept it.
Of course, there are more straight-forward, loathesome villains who are outside of this archetype but can still be compelling in the role they serve in the story. For instance, the villain in the newest Stranger Things season is this voiceless, inhuman entity whose only goal seems to be to assimilate and conquer our world. And yet the writers were able to present it in such a way to give it something resembling a personality and relationship with the protagonists. It wasn't a villain you could empathize with, but it felt like a character you could understand.

Because, in general, it seems you have a pretty good list but there are some great examples of, for instance, 'the weather' or zombies being used as effective antagonists and some, are not.

Act 2 Hawke is my favorite kind of Hawke - her happiness borders on child-like and I absolutely adore it when it's in regards to a lover. Plus, the whole song bit was really cute.
Also is it canon that Anders is really skinny? In all my interpretations of him, he's too preoccupied to eat too terribly much and I feel like Justice would've completely decimated his appetite. Oh, I could never in my life work on a deadline. When I sit down to write, I can typically get out around 400 words before I'm either completely drained or get derailed. BUT I don't sit down to write everyday it's more like once in a blue moon so it's even worse. I usually wait until I'm several chapters into something before making it into a thing.

I'm so glad this place costs because I need some serious inspiration. I love to write but I've been in a 2 year creative drought and I just don't know what to do. I find that reading helps me tremendously and I'm really eager to see what y'all have written. I have no doubt there are links to people's stuff here but I'm too lazy to go back through and look Could y'all link me some of your stuff? I've just posted the final installment of my new novel "Hidden"-- it's Dragon Age, and the latest part of my ongoing series "The Contours of Shadows". If anyone would care to check it out, feedback is welcome! Save

Well, I had to cut off chapter 2 at 3.5K words. I have too much ground to cover yet, and the Mage barely made his appearance. there was a natural break.
I managed to get the grammar cleaned up to at least readable, but I need to re-edit. I like some of it, but I chanced a couple of pieces of “naked” dialogue because someone critiqued my earlier piece saying that I overuse the descriptions equivalent to “she said it that way” and it slows the exchange down.
Personally, I do not like the bits of non framed dialogues, they look very amateurish to me in anything but a play, but I am not sure. Well, if the critique comes back with multiple “you need to show, not tell” , I will break up those two exchanges and case them in the characters action and expressions, etc.

Got indirect confirmation from Kesh's writer that I am getting her right in my Sladdison fic. Made me do a happy dance.
Worked on some chapters in that same fic, and a FemRyder/Keri one shot. Slow going thanks to a serious lack of privacy when it comes to my writing space. Will tackle some more tonight, and maybe see if I can find a quiet place to be left alone.

Anyways, I am starting my second novel in the Avisgaard series right...now.
