No, I post my chapters in Critters workshop. It is a closed workshop, and works on the principle of critiquing others to earn credits to put your work up for critique. It has extensive rules and minimal word count for each critique, so you get a lot of interesting commentary from both the people who liked what you wrote, and those who did not. There is about a three week period between when you get your story come up in the queue so it’s enough time to read through the feedback, and prepare the next chapter or short story for me. Once I finish the whole novel, and edit it through all the feedback, I will put a request for dedicated reader, but I do not think I will be able to attract one. This is not fan fiction, and well, after I finish the novel, that’s that, because there is nowhere to post it anyway where it will get read more than on my hard drive, lol. Interesting. Sounds like that format works much the same as a dedicated editor/beta. So are you going to self-publish once you've finished the novel? Certainly original fic is a different game than fanfic, and one I may try again at some point if the erstwhile narrator for my DA series will ever give up his death grip on my muse. SaveNo, I really do not see need to publish. Honestly, I do not see anyone ever reading it save for the folks who get critique credits for doing it (the dedicated reader will be credited for every 5K words they go through in Critters). My writing is too weak to be professional, and will not break through that wall that distinguishes between a sellable piece and just what any clever enough person can come up with. It's better written than many a thing I have seen, if I say so myself, but it is not gripping enough, and, in addition, I am an ESL, and there are gazillions peeps with native fluency churning out good enough texts with no grammar problems. Fan-fiction is different, because it is a conversation between the fans, and a very warm kind of fiction & environment. It begs to be shared. I really like it. But the original, well, I think you get to be honest with oneself, and see fairly clearly if it is publishable through the official stream or not. And if it is not, it will save heartache to understand that there is nothing wrong with writing as a hobby without audience. People go to the gym without aspiring to compete in Olympics, paint an untold number of pictures nobody would ever put on a wall in a hotel, let alone in the museum, etc. So, by analogy, just because you've typed out stuff, it does not mean it has to be published. But, sure, it's nice to hear what other people think of it (or not so nice, but still does feel good that *somebody* read it and took time thinking about it).

I am pleased as punch. After a couple of days of not moving forward much, I finished the first draft of Chapter 3. The second chapter’s language starts to resemble English too, after quite a few editing sweeps.
The 4th one is going to be a re-edit with some lore realignments and character insertions of the short story that originally get me to come up with the setting and keep writing.
The side character that I tossed in to move the plot really developed nicely, and now features through the outline. But the very guy who was the reason I wrote that first short story is less intriguing for me, and I am actually not that hot on Chapter 5 that continues his POV. And both 5 and 6 are the chapters where my outline is pretty close to “that’s all i’ve got for it.” It’s really going to be a test for me to see how committed I am to the novel to get through those two chapters.
I truly hope this time I will be able to get through it even if some chapters will be weaker.
Also, funnily enough, I ship my own characters in weird pairings that have no relevance to what happens in the novel. Heh, once a fanfictioner....

Did a dumb thing and added 4 new fanfic ideas to the mix of stuff I've been working on. Still stuck on Melody of Fools, which has resorted to three different chapters/dialogue one shots all from Addison's perspective, but I feel a hole in my heart where Sloane was.
The 2 of the other fics being written are centered around Keri T'Vessa. I love love love playing with her character. I have a lot of headcanony ideas for her that are being fleshed out, plus I've been focused on giving her relationship with my Ryder (Alex) a third dimension.
The third new fic added is Liara-oriented. Giving Liara a sense of humor is fun.
The last one takes place during the Skyllian Blitz and written from Sloane Kelly's perspective, focusing on her service with Korynn Shepard.

It occurs to me with people's opinions on romances like Burnham and Tyler or Jon and Daenaerys...maybe i just like bad romances...which has troubling implications for my writing.

Nope, I read what was published over the years, but we do not subscribe to HBO, so we’ll just buy the boxed set eventually. I was just kidding. It’s been years since the Dance with Dragons was published, so I barely remember digging Jon, and hating Danny in the books, and all the angst about all the foreshadowing of their prophesied romance. I am not a big TV person. I game and I read, mainly. And, write, I suppose.

Folks were divided on her before the books were screenplayed. And, yeah, I don’t really care about being spoiled or not. Most of the things I hear once in a while were predicted back before the Feast for Crows.

Anyway, no biggie. Did you read Scott Baker’s books? I actually prefer him to Martin.

Honestly when it comes to book recommendations I'd reccomend Eric Flints 1632/ Azati Shards or David Webers Honor Harrington.

Bakker is more of a heavy lifting. Abercrombie started with the First Law Trilogy, and then wrote a series of stand-alone novels in his world (something I deeply appreciate in the world overcrowded with endless sagas). Bakker lost me after the White Luck Warrior... I might need to catch up. But I dunno. I mostly read non-fiction lately.

I really, really, really did not like my plan for chapter 5. I was dwelling on it for a few days now, but I think I can start writing it now with all the changes I came up with while turning it over in my head. Feel a bit less of resentment to the plotline...
Also have to edit Chapter 2 before posting it at the workshop, I will be eligible on Wednesday. Gotta write a synopsis of chapter 1 to go with it. I doubt I will get much feedback now that it's chapters, not short stories.

What is this workshop folks keep mentioning? It's only me. I subscribe to a writer's workshop. I critique other people's work, and eventually earn enough credits to post my piece for critique by other members in a closed workshop form. It is called Critters. It's been around for a good 21 years. www.critters.org/index.php

It was weird, the other day I was jonsing for some Dragon Age, but picking up my game of DAI had no appeal. I realized it's the new fresh stories I collaberate write with others and write solo in the world of Thedas that I'm missing. Do they only accept original fiction?

Is leather plate an accurate medeval term? As long as it is clear what it is, and it makes sense, you have a license to use it. It is not verifiable what different people called what back in 1100’s in the absence of World Wide Web, and even with it in place we have difference in terminology.

My stories actually take place, from a fantasy perspective in a bit of a clashing period. Though the timeline for the inspiration is 17th century Europe so AFTER medeval times. But I tend to just refer to it as 'medeval fantasy' because that tends to be the genre I am going for and its shorthand.

Finally! Finished a new chapter of Melody of Fools and posted. Started a new concept on the Alex/Keri arc to try and add more depth to their relationship.

Well, it will sound kind of funny if you call it Enlightment fantasy. I wasn't entirely sure if that was the enlightenment either After all the events of the 30 year war wasn't very 'enlightened'. It’s still an accurate period attribution. I think Spiders just say “inspired by the 17th century aesthetics” for Greedfall. And, well, I am struggling with Chapter 5. Thursday is coming though, and days off really help me to work on writing completely from scratch bits that I did not turn over in my head million times. One good thing about a Chapter 5 is that it makes another character’s role more sensible now, and gives her more appeal in my eyes, as she is more layered.
