The trick, for me, was seeing some really dreadful stuff out there that people liked. Venture into the KinkMeme or FanFiction.net for less...esoteric fandoms and you can see what I mean. I did that for Supernatural, out of curiosity, and I will never leave the BioWare fandom again. [shudders] But seeing dreck with horrible spelling and grammar errors getting positive comments gave me the courage to start sharing on-line, which led to a blog where I could post whatever I wanted as I wrote it. Much of it never got much attention, but it's there for me to see (and cringe at, sometimes) just how much I can write when I put my mind to it.
That little, mean voice has nothing to do with ability and everything to do with fear. You have to write for you, to get those insistent people out of your head and on their merry (or angsty or weirdly complicated) way.

That moment when... You've hit your writing stride and your spouse calls you to ask a favor. And you almost say no I was pretty mentally useless though. Just needed to head 4 miles south to pick him up, went to Writer's la la Land while driving. Looked up to see I was at the airport. Oops?

Iknow this may not be the best advice, because I find it difficult to follow, but try to train your mind to where you are thinking about your writing even when you are not writing. Like during work for instance and a down moment.

colfoleyI took vacation until Monday after Thanksgiving to: Renovate the house, write fan fiction, play video games, sew, visit family, play with my dog. So work isn't interrupting me at the moment. I have Dragon Age (and other RPG) music playing in the car so I inevitably think about writing by association. I've written nearly all of my gigantic fanfiction outline that way.

I wrote 2000 words today. I think. Which brings me to .... 3019 words for this chapter so far. And I still have some character building, a short child adventure, and a halla race to write. *reviews Outline* Oh no! Almost forgot the Antler Carving Contest. Very important, can't forget.

Actually this is something me and my GF has been going into a bit lately and something, on reflection, I am curious about. How long should chapters be generally speaking? I mean I suppose I guess people will be like 'make it as long as you want, there will be no rules,' but curious. Her perspective is having too long chapters might cause people to get bored reading them and tune them out. My chapters tend to be around 7-10 pages long of MS word typing, with my more climactic chapters could be as long as 20 pages. It takes me, maybe, about half an hour to read my chapters, but it seems with...say...GRRM his chapters take me forever to read. Right about an hour. Like an episode of Thrones. And he is incredibly popular. So who has it right? How do you guys structure your chapters and know when to 'end' them?

And he is incredibly popular. So who has it right? How do you guys structure your chapters and know when to 'end' them? Random google search result said 5k words for a 10 chapter novel of 50k words total. But the longer I work on this chapter, the more I feel like I should break it up into the size of 1k- 1500 word chapters like my first 3. I was using the chapter as a way to set the brain up for a time lapse or a POV change. Now I'm back and forth on it because I want each day of Arlathvhen to be a Chapter. And if I cave in and break them up now, there would be 2-3 chapters for each Arlathvhen day. And people don't usually look at the number of words a fanfic has but the number of chapters when making a decision to read (at least, I've caught myself doing that.) And if I see 22 chapters when all I want to see is like 6 to give me a feeling for whether I can finish a story in a single sitting, then the 6 chapterss of fanfiction will win. A book is different, I don't even bother reading that index or whatever, I go by font size and thickness of the book. Are you going to post it in Archive of Our Own? Ripples Across Thedas the three "chapters" have been up a while. I'm working on ch 4

I found that on the net, the posts that are in the 1k to 3k word range make an ideal chapter length, because an electronic post is basically a scroll, not a page. Shorter ones are usually not going to tell much of a story, longer ones are hard to read in electronic format, and, well, for an amateur writer to keep a non-invested amature reader interested and entertained, and therefore reading for more than 2K is something of an achievement, because we are amateurs for a reason, heh. The printed books are a bit different, and imo, a chapter tells a storyline and should go on as long as that story goes. No need to break it up just because of the word count. That's my 2 cents.

I am still re-editing an old story, and I got to the point of a conversation which I had to re-write completely because I missed an obvious point. I sort of fixed it, but I will need to go back over that last three pages a few times, because they look by far less polished than the first five. I must have been in a hurry to pen the events down and not paying attention to the connectivity and the flow.
Critters due today, but I handed mine in earlier, so I am good. I will try to do two crits this week however, as I saw in the alert that some stories had low counts. We'll see if the good old Critters is running out of steam. Fingers crossed that no...

(For the record, all chapters but Prologue of my story have around 7k words... the published one. I don't write in MS Word that allows simple measurements of characters and words, but in WordPad, because that's what I had at the time I started.)

I don't write in MS Word that allows simple measurements of characters and words, but in WordPad, because that's what I had at the time I started.) Are you asking why you don't get views and comments on fanf-fiction.net or similar site? If so, the length does have impact on how many people would read the story past Chapter 1, but the initial reads depend on how appealing the story is to the audience, and how much cross-commenting you engage in. Usually folks will check out your story if you read and comment on theirs. The fan-fiction sites normally don't draw many "only" readers, so everyone is more interested in congenial sharing rather than in reading other folks works. And, well, sexy and funny, particularly if your synopsis is sexy and funny, is what draws the most readers as well, as peeps come to those sites to be entertained. In my experience, just write, no matter if it's read or not.

I think of a chapter as a little arc, a particular event with its own beginning, middle, and end. Some of them are 1,500 words, some of them 5,000 or more. Publishing as a serial on-line can make you break your chapters at odd places, though, particularly if you're using somewhere that has a character limit. Sometimes it's fun to do a little cliff-hanger, which necessitates a "new chapter" sort of break but which wouldn't be an actual new chapter in a hard-copy work.

Arl Eustace sat in front of his wife and daughter inside the carriage that was flanked by armored soldiers on the way Gwaren. They were crossing the grassy plainlands for about 5 days, Eustace began stroking his grey beard, adjusted his eyepatch and looked out to the window to find his son Kent riding his white Stallion, his black hair blowing in the gentle wind. The Arl was lost in thought when his wife interrupted him. "Do really need these many soldiers?" she said. Eustace slowly turned his head. "Yes, we do Martha." He said bluntly. "With the villagers springing ambushes noblemen over the past few months, security is necessary." Martha sighed "You're right considering the peasants captured Bann Damien two weeks ago. Martha began to give her husband a stern look, "Eustace we should've conducted negotiations with Arl Millician." "Bah!" Eustace snorted "Millician already tried to negotiate with the Teryn a few months ago. He roared at him and called him a traitor and Arl Millician left and haven't been heard since!" "Jon Elain is (OOC: Not finished with the conversation above. Will finish later.) A scream was heard from behind. "What was that?!" Anna cried while clinging to her mother. With his hand placed on his hilt, Eustace peered out of the window "Kent!" He yelled, "what is going on?!" "AMBUSH!" Kent yelled drawing out his silverite mace, but it was directed at the soldiers rather than Eustace. More screams were heard from all directions to the right of Eustace a soldier fell down an arrow sticking out on his neck. Arrows whizzed seemingly out of nowhere as the Arl's forces scattered trying to find cover or were being covered by arrows. Anna was crying on Martha's shoulder while Martha looked at Eustace with desperation. Eustace eye was filled with fear, even his wife woman whom Eustace always looked for advice didn't know what to do. When he was younger Eustace would always remain calm under pressure and welcomed a challenge. But for the first time, he did not know what to do. The arrows seemingly stopped and moans and cries for help were heard. Eustace looked at his wife and daughter "Are you all right?" He asked with fear. Anna was pale but she nodded slowly while Martha nodded as well. Eustace then turned to his son who was off his horse and was tending to the wounded. "Son-" He croaked. A booming voice echoed through the grasslands. "VILLAGERS! IT'S TIME TO FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM AND BEAT BACK THE TERYN AND THOSE WHO SUPPORT HIS CORRUPTION!" A primal scream reached Eustace's ears, It sounded like a pack Blighted Wolves Anna, with tears streaming down her face covered her ears. Cries of "SMILING KNIGHT!" and "FREEDOM!" was what said in response. Moving to the left Eustace eye widened as he saw men and women wearing mismatched rusted Iron armor and multicolored gambesons equipped with Halberds and Iron Longswords. From behind them were what Eustace thought were Knights, but they didn't wear any family symbol. The people began to descend and attack the already scattered unit. "Kent!" Eustace said desperation about to draw his sword and exit the carriage to join the fray but instantly remembered Anna and Martha and stayed where he was. "Why aren't we moving?!" Eustace thought, he would get his answer as the driver fell off in front of the carriage, her eye pierced by an arrow. "An early victim of the volley!" Eustace thought bitterly, they were surrounded with no way out. The grasslands were filled with the screams of the Arl's and peasant soldiers, clashing of swords, the scrape of armor and Kent barking out orders. The Horses screamed as death surrounded them, and Eustace spotted a peculiar looking figure: A Knight, wearing silverite armor and equipped with a wooden shield with a white, smiling tree on it. He was slicing the Arl's soldiers left and right and raised his sword in triumph. The peasants and knights yelled in jubilation in response. Clearly, this was the Smiling Knight: The apparent leader of these peasants. The door to the carriage swung open as a peasant stinking of garlic grabbed at Martha. "Hold still bitch!" He growled, "you're coming with us!" "Mother!" Anna cried in horror covering her mouth, as Martha struggled against the peasant holding her arm. Eustace was about to rush in but saw Martha grab the peasants knife that was located on his belt and stabbed him in the neck. The peasant looked at her in shock, as blood came from his mouth. Martha pushed the corpse out of the carriage while Eustace breathed a sigh of relief. However, behind him two people: Knights, grabbed Anna. " LET ME GO! MOTHER! FATHER! KENT! HELP!" She yelled as the Knight yanked her from the carriage and threw her to the ground. Angered was about to attack, but the second knight punched him in the jaw. Eustice landed on Martha's lap as the Knights closed the carriage door. "That's my daughter!" he shouted, specks of blood coming out from his mouth. One of the Arl's soldiers not knowing was going on rushed slammed the right side of the door and got in the driver's seat. Shouts of "RETREAT!" came from Kent "Protect my family! Get them to Gwaren safely!" "Wait!" Martha desperately shouted to the soldier, but she wasn't listening. "They have my daughter!" Eustice shouted but the carriage rode away, with the Arl's soldier's fighting their way out. "MOTHER! FATHER! DON'T LEAVE ME!" Anna cried while one of the Knights held onto her waist as she struggled to get free. The battle was drawing to a close, Kent was hacking away at the peasants, trying to fight to his last breath, buying time while his solider's flee to Gwaren with his family. "Surrender!" The Smiling Knight bellowed his armor stained with blood. "Go fuck yourself!" Jon spat, sticking his knife into the unarmored gut of a peasant and charged at him. The Smiling Knight held his shield up, enduring blow after blow by until he was able to bat away Kent's mace attacks. The Smiling Knight found an opening and slashed the gap in the knee of Kent's armor. Screaming, Kent kneeled down as the Smiling Knight advanced on him. Unwilling to give in, Kent and the Smiling Knight clashed weapons. "Surrender now!" A knight yelled, "Or we'll gut the bitch!" "Anna!" Kent whipped around and saw Anna in tears with a knife to her throat by the Armored Knight. Kent gritted his teeth and dropped his mace he looked around him and saw the peasants and the Knights finishing off the soldiers who couldn't flee. "May the Maker curse you and your coup!" Kent said angrily spitting at The Smiling Knight's breastplate. The Smiling Knight said nothing and sheathed his sword and motioned the peasants to haul him away. OOC: Listen to this while the battle is going on!:
