??? One of the greatest sci-fi movies in the history of cinema is finally getting a sequel. I don't know whether to be excited or worried... but damn, it looks good. Glad they kept that gritty edgy atmosphere. Not so glad about Bautista the meathead showing up, no offense. At least they got Gosling (I liked his performance in La La Land). Definitely gonna watch this though. I'm not gonna miss it like I did with Force Awakens. This is the Force Awakens for me. Edit: I especially LOVE the music in this trailer. It hearkens the noir cyberpunk vibe from the score of the original Blade Runner. Very appropriate and very exciting. This trailer is getting better by the minute.

It's too bad it won't live up to the hype. But then again, who does?

ryderflynn: I am not exaggerating when I say; Alien 7 & Blade Runner: the Deckard Effect will more or less make or break my faith in humanity Hollywood. If they are both garbage, I may see a Kung-fu or art-house flick occasionally, but I will not see any Big-budget or franchise sequels anymore. I've been losing my patience with all the Horse-shit re-makes, much like I lost my patience for the Gaming industry. However, if they are both kick-ass, I promise to not be such a grouch all the time...

However, if they are both kick-ass, I promise to not be such a grouch all the time... Same. I barely go out anymore to watch movies. Aside from the time factor, I also feel like there aren't a lot of movies worth spending 7 or 10 bucks on, even (or especially) Marvel movies. They make for nice popcorn entertainment, but not worth 10 bucks IMO. I don't expect every movie to be Raging Bull, The Godfather, 2001: A Space Odyssey, or even The Dark Knight, but I just don't feel like spending on "above average material". I still take the effort to go out and watch Pixar movies though, being a devoted follower since day 1... for all that it's worth. Their recent movies are falling in quality, but I still have hopes that future entries like Coco and Incredibles 2 will turn that around. I'm also looking forward to Cars 3.

Also Pixar seems to be dumbing things down a bit anyway, so... Yeah, I know. But, I'm a man who likes to have hope... till I'm disappointed and trash it anyway. But to be fair, I did like Inside Out, which wasn't their best work, but showed that there're still a few talented people remaining in that company. Not degraded to the state of Bioware, yet. Also, there were actually movies that were made far longer after their predecessors and still turned out semi-good. Tron: Legacy comes to mind especially when I think about the Blade Runner sequel. I felt that it was such an underrated sequel.

Only that it's been rumored for over a decade. [snip] Yeah, I know. Since you mentioned Blade Runner 2: the Deckard Effect, let's talk about Ridley Scott for a moment. He is a great filmmaker. Yes, he misses the mark sometimes (Exodus) but overall he has influenced the art of movie-making for decades & people are largely ignorant about many of his films. Has anyone here seen "the Duelists" with Harvey Kietel? Now, I am one of the few who liked Prometheus. There were two reasons why I liked it; firstly, I knew it would probably NOT be a "traditional ALIEN movie", and that was fine. I wanted some backstory (however convoluted), I wanted some new characters, and I wanted to have a bit of the history of Weyland-Yutani to be fleshed out. This is what I also enjoyed about the Star Wars prequels. Of course the dialogue was awful & Portman/Hayden were not allowed to really ACT. It was still really cool to see characters like Palps, Kenobi & Yoda in their glory days. It was cool to see the Clone Wars, and to see Darth Sidious come to power. My point is; I REALLY hope Ridley Scott & Denis Villenevue walk that tightrope between original ideas & spoofing themselves. Also, I predict people will bitch on the internet about Alien 7, saying shit like "this doesn't have enough Xenomorphs" or "it didn't dovetail into the original flick" or "it's not similar to ALIEN enough", which will only make me more (cautiously) excited to see it.

I agreed on seeing more of the lore. It's definitely interesting storytelling there, in spite of all the flaws. That said, I feel that it's a bit different with Blade Runner. For me, as far as I'm aware of, Blade Runner was more than just about its lore. Any idiot could pull new lore outta their bottoms, much like Lucas did with that Midichlorian DNA crap. But Blade Runner was more about heavy existential issues, probing the very meaning of what it means to be humans, what our memories represent, etc. Star Wars was fundamentally a "Light vs. Dark" coming of age story, not so much about the weightier philosophies till the expanded universe arrived. While the prequels hardly did the original trilogy justice, I feel like it's far more impossible a task for the new Blade Runner to match up with the lightning in a bottle original BR, which spawned a whole generation of sci-fi movies including the equally provocative Ghost in the Shell, which also questioned the existence of our soul and our mind in our "shell" of a body. tl;dr: I don't expect 2049 to one-up the original movie. Period. It's simply impossible.

(Also, according to Ford, these issues are once again addressed/eluded to in "Deckard Effect") I know it won't top the original film. I just want it to be good, I simply don't want to regret buying a ticket. I just hope I don't walk out of the theater feeling queasy

My thoughts on the new Bladerunner trailer:
The lighting is terrible. Ridley Scott trying to be Del Toro with the blue and orange color schemes. *rolls eyes*
Ryan Gosling? Really? REALLY?! They should have cast someone a little tougher looking. Someone a bit older. Fassbender, Bale, Ejiofor, or maybe even a woman like Blanchett, Winslet, or Davis. 😧 Whatever.

Hey, Gosling can act. Not all pretty-boys are crap actors *looking at Tanning Chatum* Also, Scott is merely co-producing this film, not directing, nor is he a DP. I am cautiously optimistic, as I am a big fan of Villeneuve. He said this regarding Blade Runner 2: the Deckard Effect; "I know that every single fan will walk into the theater with a baseball bat. I'm aware of that and I respect that, and it's okay with me because it's art. Art is risk, and I have to take risks. It's gonna be the biggest risk of my life but I'm okay with that. For me it's very exciting... It's just so inspiring, I'm so inspired. I've been dreaming to do sci-fi since I was 10 years old, and I said 'no' to a lot of sequels. I couldn't say 'no' to Blade Runner 2049 (2017). I love it too much, so I said, 'Alright, I will do it and give everything I have to make it great.'" *crosses fingers*

Although I'm probably the most pessimistic movie fan in the room, I think we should give this guy a chance. Let's not actually judge him till he actually stumbles on his face... THEN we bring the torches. But jokes aside, I've seen amateur directors with a passion doing things professional directors with a winning reputation couldn't do. Scorsese made Shutter Island, Nolan made Interstellar, and Tarantino made The Hateful Eight. Yes, I just said Hateful Eight. When Jon Favreau was given the role of directing Iron Man, the movie that would kick off the MCU, I heard he was just about as nervous as this guy too, and yet, the movie turned out great. Not perfect, but I'm not looking for perfect; I'm just looking for a good time. All that being said, this guy isn't just some film school dropout either. Sicario AND Arrival? Yeah, I'm quite confident Villeneuve would at least deliver us a decent movie. AND he's set to direct Dune too? FREAKING DUNE?! That major sci-fi disaster of a production? I'm definitely having my eye on him. If things go well, he could be the next Nolan.

I just don't think his look fits the character or the setting. Maybe this Villa dood will knock it out the park. Maybe not. So far I'm on the fence about him. Some of the lightning and direction choices seem questionable to me. Looking forward to it though.

Brings back lots of great memories. Cuba Gooding's still got it in that reenactment. It's a shame you don't see him much anymore outside of direct-to-DVDs and television.

Well... shit. It's a well made movie wrapped around an incredibly pernicious plot - pernicious to the characters and the audience.
