From everything I've seen so far in the trailers, it really does seem more like a Mass Effect series than a Star Trek series to me. The look and feel so far seem very much ME. The ship design with all the holographic interfaces and fairly bright lights in the contrast of dark backgrounds reminds me of the Normandy SR1 and the SR2 in ME3. All the action of course (although that might of course just be a trailer thing). But then, for me, JJ Abrams' ST movies were already basically ME movies with the wrong ship models. They had everything that you'd expect from ME, the sleek polished and very much flowing design of things, the armors and suits were very Mass Effect-y, even the phasers were no longer particle beams but shot distinct (energy?) bullets like ME weapons. Then of course, you had the lens flare. On the non-visual side, you always had a fairly wacky plot-line with lot's of action and great character interaction (that was somewhat more important than the actual story) with many quotable lines and one liners. Conflicts usually went like this: Bad guy shows up -> good guy establishes being the good guy by offering to negotiate -> bad guy doesn't go for it -> action scene. So yea, the new Star Trek is basically Mass Effect with different names and ship models but in essence, it's the same. It no longer is the old ST from the 60s/70s or the 90s but hey, once you realize that, it's still great entertainment. SO I am looking forward to the new series but I definitely expect to see more Mass Effect than Star Trek there as well. BTW (and since it fits so well), I am just now re-playing this awesome game. Now that was Star Trek as it used to be!

Sonequa is an awesome lady!
Worked with her on the Walking Dead before her demise, and she was still working on Once Upon a Time. Very down to earth (for a Starship Commander, lol) and just friendly.
Glad she is on something I like!

Other unpopular opinion: Chris Pine> William Shatner (don't kill me) Chris Pine is better when playing any role other than Kirk. He was pretty entertaining in Wonder Woman. As for Kirk, I never really cared for that character to begin with.

Captain Kirk would do a double-fisted backhand hammer-punch to Sovereign and break it in half. Amazingly, this would open up the hidden Reaper vajayjay, which he would promptly fuck, rendering the entire Reaper armada as Kirk's new alien bitch. Shepard pls.

I think Kirk would just have pulled a Nomad on star kid. Problem solved.

Hopefully one day we will see an adaptation of Shepard's journey. Only if they go with Femshep. Otherwise they might as well just not do it.

I know what I am about to say is sacriledge but Insurrection has always been my favorite Trek movie. With all three of the JJ verse movies also strong contenders. Though Voyage Home is about...third I would guess. Insurrection isn't bad at all. First Contact is my favorite. Voyage Home is my favorite TOS movie though. Insurrection and Generations don't get enough love IMHO. Probably because they were too subtle for some critics. But I thought they were fantastic. First Contact is absolutely perfect. Alice Krige was terrifying. I can't talk about Nemesis...

I also liked the lighter tone of Insurrection. After (the brilliant) First Contact it was nice change of pace. Generations is soso. It would be better if it werent for that giant Nexus plot hole. Nemesis, well, it was the director's fault, I think. I saw a making-of once and he just had no idea about STTNG and made one bad call after another (like giving Picard a land vehicle because he is now in his "Porsche years" ). The space battle against the Romulans is one of the best battle scenes in the pre-Abrams ST movies though, I think, both visually and in terms of coreography. I'll give 'em that. Also, IMO, the TNG episode " The Chase" should have been a movie (maybe instead of Generations).

Oh heck yeah. Sign. Me. Up. Or should I say "Beam. Me. Up." Hey I'm not the biggest trek fan and this looks amazing. And you literally cannot go wrong with that choice for music. Sign me up with a lot of caution. I'm not a big fan of prequels (which is what Star Trek: Discovery is) and that is what hurt the last series Star Trek: Enterprise spent it's first two seasons chasing it's own tail, season 3 was good with the whole season long Xindi War and it also ended the Temporal Cold War arc as well, but it lacked a lot of the tension that the show runners were trying to copy from DS9 Dominion War arc where beloved characters did morally questionable things, were maimed, and one was killed and they still kept you coming back, because we knew that Captain Archer was destined to have something to do with the birth of the Federation and season 4 of ST:E was basically just continuity checklist and a shit ton fan service. Also it's being promoted as told from "the first officer's POV and it's a person of color" that was already done in Star Trek: Deep Space 9 because Sisko was a commander for the first 3 seasons of DS9 and didn't get promoted to captain until the final episode of season 3 or the first episode of season 4. Then they it's a woman and I say "Hello Captain Janeway[/i] of Star Trek: Voyager. When and if it get released on Netflix and/or Amazon Prime I'll give it a try but I'm not paying for CBS All Access for one show.

Regardless of his rank. The thing that has me.most excited is the bit about the first officer. It suggests something that star trek has had a mixed history with...genuine Character growth.

Other unpopular opinion: Chris Pine> William Shatner (don't kill me) Shatner can be annoying but at least he brings a personality to Kirk, something Pine lacks in general. Pine just blends into the background. In all fairness Pine is slightly better than Henry Cavil is but then a dead cat is better than Henry Cavil so that is not saying much. Star Trek: Beyond was a FUN movie but not a great movie, it's best of the Kelvin timeline because Abrams didn't direct it. Insurrection is bad and while Generations looks like it's a cheap direct-to-video movie with an above average cast. First Contact and Nemesis are the best of the TNG movies. The only good thing that I can about JJ Abrams is that it's good thing he's not a counterfeiter, or we would be serious trouble. The only thing he seems to get right is coping the styles of other directors. Whedon at the very least knows basic compensation and/or gets various DPs that know compensation better than he does so I can see where everyone and everything and what is going on and he also knows when to use jump cuts and spinning the camera around and when to use the shakey cam,to make an a scene more alive a LOT better than Abrams did on Star Trek which was next to impossible to tell who was who and what was going on.
