I saw that a lot at a forum I used to post at, where regulars who were female would create an alt and pose new (male) posters before the mods/admin would predictably out them (never disguised their IP -- noobs).

Well, enough that nobody figured it out before the mods or admin noticed their IP, though that never took awfully long.

First, some background. This site was ratehispanic.com, which no longer exists. It had the sort of culture where flaming between users was the norm. As I think you'd expect, men did this more than women. Also, for a long while, only face pics could be uploaded as an avatar, which also made things pretty interesting. Think of that funny feeling you get after posting your pic in "Behind the Monitor"-thread. We'd become habituated to that kind of personal closeness with each other. Also, it was not uncommon for users to "fake" (use others' pictures as their own) so forum regulars generally had an eye out for that. Ladies often wisely went without avatars when posing as men, though.

I'm not sure how long they could keep up the act given more time. I'd never seen anything like it before, but pretty new to forum'ing back then anyway. In retrospect, though, I did notice a few patterns. Typically the persona they would adopt would be a hardened, inner-city kind of guy (this site attracted a lot of those types anyway). Often they used these accounts to be jerks and say things they would not normally have the guts to say with their true accounts (which made it funny when the mods outed them), and often they displayed a good sense of the regular users' characters right away in how they interacted with them, whereas newbies naturally take a little time getting to know each other before figuring out who's who.

In short, it allowed them to take on a bolder e-persona and join in on the flame wars more comfortably.
