If you are afraid of being raped and becoming pregnant from it, despite the statistically low chances, you'd also have to take drastic actions for all those other dangers. Breast cancer kills a lot of people every year, statistically the chances are very low for you that you'll develop breast cancer (lets assume you do not have a genetic disposition for it) but you cannot be really sure. Wouldn't it be better to simply remove the breast tissue altogether right now? What I'm saying is, if you follow that train of thought there is a lot of drastic and extreme measures to do to prevent all the horrible things that could befall you in the future. Do you really want to lead such life? I didn't bring getting tubes tied up just because of my fear of rape, but I note that not getting a rape baby would be an additional benefit. I more of brought it up on account that I could have consensual sex without having to worry about the condom breaking, or the female methods of birth control not working. Rape might be uncommon, but pregnancy isn't. It wouldn't necessarily have to be this way if I didn't have to worry about having to live in a state where the local law is controlled by fundamentalist Christians. But I don't know what state will have jobs for me, so I might have to live in a state where "we might let your get an abortion if its killing you, maybe." Also, a lot of rapes go unreported so I would really put much faith in rape statistics. Yes, like any man made thing condoms can break, but so can car tires, airplane turbines and glass windows on tall buildings. Those things can kill you, not just lead to an unwanted pregnancy. Yet people fly, drive and walk around in big cities every single day - and so do you. Thats life. You already are accepting dozens of calculated risks every single day in in all areas of your life, a lot of which could seriously maim or even kill you. But you have a problem with this one despite the fact that this is not more likely to happen than all the other horrible things. Why? Could it be some irrational phobia? What makes the danger of an unwanted pregnancy so special for you?

You already are accepting risks, that things could break and seriously hurt in all areas of your life every single day. But you have a problem with this one despite the fact that this is not more likely to happen than all the other horrible things. Why? Well, one you're dead. You are dead and have ceased to exist. You are dead and no longer suffering through this life. No matter what anyone does in this life they will die. That could be from slipping in the shower or being stabbed to death by a clown with a machete. But with unwanted pregnancy, you can suffer, financially, psychologically, physically, ect. And not only you suffer, the kid suffers too. They may have a very bleak existence ahead of them. They are either raised by someone who is not fit to raise them, or they are raised by the state. I just don't want kids. Even if they were made through consensual sex. I just don't want to go through pregnancy. I might not even go through a procedure if I'm not allergic to birth control or something. It just seemed like having to tubes snipped would take all those worries away. If I have kids, they will be adopted, I will be able to take care of them. I'm not going to be shoving some new person into an orphanage.

So if I ever have an unwanted child, either from rape or from condom break. I'll just shove that poor fuck into an orphanage. I don't really know what its like to live in an orphanage, but whatever.

But really what is the big deal between "the kids who are blood related to you" vs "kids who you've adopted?" What makes one inherently better then the other? The main downside to a tube tying is that I won't go through child birth. But that wouldn't stop me from having kids, they just won't be made from me. I'll just raise kids, who either are unwanted or their parents can't take care of them anymore, and give them a chance to have a better life outside of foster homes. Why is this a bad thing? We are already at what, 7 billion people now on this planet, I don't think we need anymore.

In the unlikely event that you would be faced with such an awful scenario, you would just need a friend who's willing and able to drive you across state lines. You're not forced to choose between a major medical procedure now or a back alley abortion later. There are other options. There's a time limit on how late they can perform an abortion. Usually 20 to 22 weeks. It's possible to not notice until it's too late, at which point she would either be forced to carry the baby to term, or fall down a flight of stairs onto a pile of coat hangers. It wouldn't necessarily have to be this way if I didn't have to worry about having to live in a state where the local law is controlled by fundamentalist Christians. But I don't know what state will have jobs for me, so I might have to live in a state where "we might let your get an abortion if its killing you, maybe." Find a doctor in another state that's willing to perform the surgery, schedule an appointment with them, then take a couple of days vacation to visit and get it done. It's not an irrational phobia, some people don't want kids why are trying to twist her opinion into some kind phobia? How bout you? You ever consider getting snipped? Tokophobia is a real thing, but you're still right. Sometimes children don't fit into a life style, some people lack the desire to have them, some make the deliberate choice not to have them even if they want kids. It's an individuals choice and no one should take that from them.

Limits depends on the state, with some not having restrictions at all. Special permission might also be granted if the pregnancy is determined to have a significant deleterious effect on a woman's mental health.

From my perspective, tube tying isn't really that much of a drastic procedure. Its not like having sex change. That would be drastic. Lone Shadow, are you sure you want to have a sausage swinging between your legs? But to me, having my tubes tied is just erasing a bunch of headaches. Oh no, the condom broke and I live in state where I can't get an abortion unless the baby is actively trying to kill me. Baby, I hope for both our sakes that you have a tiny knife to stab with, because you're probably not going to like the reality that will greet you if you get out alive and I'm not going be happy about being your mommy. Maybe I'll just let child out into the wilderness where a wolf pack might find it and raise it as their own. Become one of those feral children who will grow up to be my state's new local legend. Legends says that the mother, unable to get an abortion, had left her child here and that child was taken in by wolves. Now, he roams the woods, attacking people and eating them. He is the Backwoods Cannibal and he is going eat you! But I don't want to have kids and if suddenly change my mind, which I'm doubtful of but it could happen, then I'm not stopped from adopting a kid. Really from my perspective their are only up sides to this. Sure I won't experience the miracle of childbirth, but uh, fuck that, that's only an additional upper for me. Maybe not for some, but for I'm just missing its the equivalent of missing the fantastic opportunity of having my head slammed against the wall over a dozen times. My life will be so empty that I missed the chance of experiencing a concussions.

Having children is a huge responsibility and I will defend anyones choice not to have them, just like I would defend their choice to have them. Kids are great, no doubt about it, but sometimes circumstances and chosen lifestyles don't allow for them and I don't see that as a reason to criticize a person's actions to prevent a pregnancy from happening. Tubaligations and vasectomies are a very mature step to take, so why question it? IMO

Also, a lot of rapes go unreported so I would really put much faith in rape statistics. To be clear, I'm not a fan of abortion. I said this quite some time ago. But I understand people's rights to their own body. And I hate the idea of anyone forcing another person to do something against their will. So it is your body, and therefore your choice. All that said, here in NY, abortions are legal. At least I think they are. And in NYC, unemployment isn't that high (last I checked). So you might be able to find a job there. What field are you in? We might be able to point you to a state where you could find work, and have control of your body.

I personally think that the ability to have an abortion should be a standard thing worldwide... Either way operations and the such are a personal thing That being said I mostly empathize with her I also have a fear of those things... theyre actually rational fears

My partner has had the snip, neither of us has ever wanted kids and it was a choice between invasive hospital based surgery (which I would have to beg multiple doctors for and only get if I was very lucky) vs a quick 20min no questions asked doctors appointment at the local GP. We went with the snip.
I have always known I didn't want children from a very young age, and 40 years later nothing has changed. All my life I have had to deal with most people who find out doing the "oh you are so young, you will change you're mind, if you don't you'll regret it" thing. (I don't advertise it, but a woman with no kids stands out and questions are asked).
I think a lot of people don't realise the certainty that can come with knowing you don't want children and the kind of bollocks that has comes my way over the years would never fly going in the opposite direction. "oh you just had a baby, but you are so young, you'll regret it you know and there's no getting rid of it now"

What makes the danger of an unwanted pregnancy so special for you? It's not an irrational phobia, some people don't want kids why are trying to twist her opinion into some kind phobia? How bout you? You ever consider getting snipped? I'm not twisting anyones opinion, I'm simply having my own opinion here. I considered snipping once but then I've learned about how durable and reliable good condoms really are and that snipping would be overkill. If I cannot trust condoms despite them being very reliable I'd have to cease sex altogether because pregnancy is the least of my concerns if there is something like AIDS or Hepatitis out there that will seriously fuck up my life forever. But I'm not letting fear dictate my life and seriously compromise my lifestyle, especially if there is a comfortable way to prevent it that works 99,99999% of the times. The remaining 0,000001% is simply ''Life''. Fear is irrational if the chances of the thing you are afraid of happening is really damn low and you're ready to take drastic life altering decisions based on that fear. I'd also have to be afraid of car accidents because of material failure and stop driving altogether, and cease flying because planes can break too. And thats a mild comparison because not doing these things does not require surgeries. That would be a life full of irrational fears. You can live such life, a lot of people have chosen to, but the question is: do you really want to do that?

We are already at what, 7 billion people now on this planet, I don't think we need anymore. The Africans and Middle Eastern people don't think so! They themselves can add 2 billion to the world's population by 2050 while some western or Asian countries are dying and will be replaced by less civilized people (if not culturally-socially reformed).

I've done next to no research on "getting snipped", or "tied" or whatever the fuck. But from what I remember hearing, the procedure is irreversible or not easily reversible. Now in my view, it is foolish to make an irreversible or not easily reversible change to your body based on an present opinion that can change, or a fear that may be overcome or diminish in time. I think that's what Beetle is getting at, as well. This has nothing to do with location, adoption or even the question of kids or no kids. It's just a bad idea to take that plunge when there is a greater than zero chance you'll regret it.
Personally I don't think you should have surgery of any kind unless it's absolutely medically necessary. Shit happens, and unless you need it to save your life or drastically improve its condition, why take the risk?
But it must be acknowledged that it's still every individual's right to make bad choices, just as it is good ones.

Some people know they won't regret it. And yet we are still told by people that "know better" that we don't know ourselves as well as they do. I have wanted nothing to do with children my entire life. The connection just isn't there, the desire isn't there. It is never going to be there. If there is one thing I'm certain of in my life, it's that. I understand the desire to stop people from making what could potentially be a bad decision. But there are some things that you have to just step back from and trust that they know what they're doing. I wish you all the best, @theloneshadow. Hope things work out for you.

When I say kinda I mean that I wouldnt describe it as foolish but eh I have no intention of having kids ever... but id never get it done... surgery is a major thing to go through and theres like literally 0 chance of me getting pregnant anyway so theres no real reason for me to get it done... Some people 100% dont want children and never will and its ok for them to get it done for sure... but would I say its sensible to do it based on fear??? Not exactly.

I don't "know better". I know that I don't know what I may or may not want ten or twenty years down the line. Ten years ago I was dead certain I wanted to be a lawyer. Twenty years ago I was certain I wanted to be a pokemon. One of those is a lie. The point is, wisdom doesn't come from knowing, it comes from knowing what you don't know. And planning accordingly. It's not about children, it's not about desire, it's about not permanently messing with one's body and facing all sorts of reprecussions now or down the line that were not necessary. It makes no difference to me whether someone has children or not, gets a tattoo, sterilizes themselves, or cuts off their own arm. I'm not responsible for someone else's decisions. But certain actions are wise, some are neutral and some are decidedly unwise. Something that permanently alters you and carries a greater than zero chance of regret or unforseen side effects is firmly in the latter camp. In any case, perhaps it's time to move on. I believe we've said our piece and this discussion is starting to derail the thread. Those interested in dicussing it further should take it to PM or to an appropriate thread.

Hair styles are overrated. Hats are underrated.

Vampires should be terrifyingly scarey things, not the trash they have evolved into in the media of today.

Never 'nuff hats. Vampires should be terrifyingly scarey things, not the trash they have evolved into in the media of today. Ehh... if you mean sparkling little fairies, yes, that needs to die in a fire. But go back to mere monsters? Nah. I prefer in-between where vampires build interesting hierarchies, are a little different lore-wise from the traditional Dracula-ish but are otherwise multi-dimensional characters with different interests and desires. They could also be used as metaphors for something else. For example Being Human (US), the vampire character was pretty much a metaphor for an addict.
