They're clearly going for a simpler look. It is free to play after all, not a big studio budget with big studio dollars for art.
Also they're fighting a fucking OWLBEAR, how awesome is that?!
The art style reminds me of the Dragon Age Origins flash game -- journeys or something? That was hella fun BTW.

It must be because of the art style, rather than that they give kids direct access to their parents' credit cards for in-app purchases. |

The art style reminds me of the Dragon Age Origins flash game -- journeys or something? That was hella fun BTW. I don't mind simpler look. Now someone quoted it, I remembered that I saw that trailer when I was watching that new console presentation of tones of games waiting on the Anthem. One of the trailers in E3 was actually a really stylized anime style, but OMG, did it stand out. To me, cartoons/anime should open up the options to give completely insane/incredible worlds and characters. A human barbarian with a big-ass hammer and zig-zagged sword... well, I might have been impressed when I saw it the first time, but well, I've played DnD games.
DA:O actually stood out for me. I was playing it just a few weeks ago, and was surprised how visually interesting the game actually is, and how color schemes and characters manage to look memorable.
Honestly, why not do elemental creatures as our avatars, animalistic elements of all sorts, why not create crazy weapons and make environments that are not green grass and standard masonry? Why not take it beyond medieval Europe 101?
Well, anyway, that's what I crave, and maybe the rest of the world just can't wait for another chance to play an elf with a bow.... In the end, it's just I don't like it visually, and the backstage for killing stuff is not cewl enough for me.
