DAI is an action RPG. Mass Effect (1) used to be a real RPG, then 2 came along and fucked everything up. ME2 was superior in every way. The biggest issues I have with Andromeda is how they went back to ME1s ridiculous RPG loot and inventory system. It was a HUGE step backwards. *Blink* Are you ... are you an alt account of mine that I don't know about?

Mass Effect is an action RPG DAI is an action RPG. Mass Effect (1) used to be a real RPG, then 2 came along and fucked everything up. Out of curiosity, would you mind clarifying what you mean by action vs. real RPGs? In my mind, Diablo is much more of a real RPG than any of the MEA games. FWIW, my definition of an action RPG consists of real time movement and attacking, a combat system that goes beyond target then execute action (so like dodging, multiple attacks). Addressing your original point, I can't really think of any solid AAA RPGs (outside Diablo if that counts) where procedural generation was a core aspect of the game. The closest thing I can think of is the Chrysler Building in Parasite Eve, but that was more or less bonus end game content.

Either I remember Diablo 2 very poorly, or I have no idea what makes a game an RPG.
You can pick one of five (or 7 after DLC, IIRC) completely unvoiced characters at the start. The only non-stabby/blasty interaction with other characters thereafter is standing next to them while they either tell you where you're going next or describe what you just did.
By that logic.. is Contra an RPG? Mario?
Call me old fashioned, but an RPG should at least have fucking dialogue.

I think it stems from the fact that early video games were limited by technology so you couldn't make a game like DnD (instead we had Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior/Quest). Of I the Dragon Quest games, I've only played DQ8 and the protagonist has no dialogue, yet I would still consider it an RPG by video game standards. Same goes for Soulsbourne games. For me, video game RPGs involve stats and maybe some RNG and not so much roleplaying (ironically).

MEA, to specify, is a RPG by how you play the role of a character, and make decisions that effect the fate of that character. But it is not an RPG/Action, RPG/Shooter, basically anything but an RPG game. Narration mode defines this game.
Yea I said it, you could play narration mode in MEA and not miss a single thing it has to offer.

It seems that Action RPGs differ from regular RPGs in that they have live action combat as opposed to turn- or menu-based combat... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_role-playing_game

Does it really matter which pigeonhole it fits as long as we just hate enjoy the game?
I don't care whether it's a fishing simulator or a "horizontal sidescrolling shoot 'em up". If it's fun to me I'll play it (assuming I have the time for it).

Fine. Let me rephrase.
PROCEDURAL GENERATION IS A SPECIFIC TOOL YOU SHOULD USE WHERE IT IS APPROPRIATE. IT IS NOT A 'COOL THING' YOU BUILD A GAME AROUND AND A PROFESSIONAL GAME DEVELOPMENT STUDIO LIKE BIOWARE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT.

might as well get it over with so i can call it a day and make room for other games coming out. the story did not interest me in the slightest.

IT IS NOT A 'COOL THING' YOU BUILD A GAME AROUND AND A PROFESSIONAL GAME DEVELOPMENT STUDIO LIKE BIOWARE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT. Not trying to defend them, but BW found out about procedural generation and the lack of fun eventually. A bit too late in the development cycle though. And well... No Man's Sky is the perfect example of that, even though it still gets support, and even sees improvements.
