I'm sure they can still adjust the stats on weapons/gear/wave composition/etc, but that seems to be it in terms of server-side changes. The problem with that though, is that it's been quite a while we've had such balance changes. If they can easily adjust stats, then why don't they do it? To leave the in-balance in balance? Yeah, I don't believe it's all that straight-forward either.

The more I think about it, the more this decision irritates me.
Think of the decision from BW/EA's viewpoint. You've invested a huge chunk of your resources in a game slated to be released in 2018. About a quarter into the prior year, you release a game that is very poorly received. By a month or two out the brand is in freefall. Your primary goal is to maximize sales of the 2018 title. What do you do?
I see two main options:
1) Invest as much as reasonably possible in providing quality support to try to rebuild good will with the fan base and generate some positive press.
2) Cut the game off as early as possible without rendering any previous statements false. The aim here to to maximize the amount of time between the death of the 2017 game and the release of the 2018 to make the bad PR as stale as possible on release.
They chose #2.

It always comes down to moneypolitics... They chose #1 with ME3, even though the bitching about it's ending appeared to be much worse than people complaining about MEA's animations. Red/green/blue against "my emotionless face is tired"...

Well, we all beta tested for Athem it seems.. If you look at those trailers etc. I does have a strong MEA-ish feeling to it. I for one am not buying anything with Bioware on it ahead of release. And even after release, i will make sure it's worth my money before even looking in the store direction. I'm slightly more positive about Dragon Age 4, although I don't think i'll be buying a ticket when the hypetrain schedule is shown. Possibly minor DAI spoiler -->> (just want to know how destructive Solas is going to be ) Shame how a great game studio goes down due to pissing contests, lack of trust, and corporate greed. The latter probably being one of the biggest culprits. Not saying they are going down for real, but I think they are not as respected/trusted as they were a few years back.

Also, even if not really scifi, The Division is a good coop third person shooter with skills with cooldowns And it's a cover shooter closer to the feeling of ME3, while MEA is closer to Warframe (uber mobility) I think the Division has less players than MEA at this point. Although Massive at least supported the game for a much longer time, but they had their own issues with content and ideas in that game. Even it was short lived, but with Division I did get a "Wow" factor with how amazing it was to fight in an abandoned nyc. I used to live there for a long time and now seeing it again in video game was a very nice touch.

seriously, what about the datamined characters? absolutely nothing new will be added ? There would still be new characters, not much. and maybe new powers and some weapons. But the issue is they drop the support of the game, so no more balance patches. If you are still unhappy with how certain weapons and powers performed and bugs that still here in MP. Bioware has done fixing them.

So far the only similar fun-to-play coop shooter is Warframe. It is a free to play space ninja game with a big grindwall, but it has a lot going for it. Over 3 years old, it is still growing. (Last month there was a Sat night with over 60,000 players on at once.) The combat system is much smoother than ME:AMP, but doesn't have jump jets. There is a huge weapon selection of all kinds, and there are a lot of good melee weapons and styles. The best part is that the devs actively play the game and listen to the players, and they field the complaints. They are constantly fixing stuff and adding new free DLC 3 years into the game.
From what I have seen so far, Anthem has a long way to go to catch up.
Once MEAMP folds, I will probably go back to Warframe, unless something else comes up (Destiny 2 anyone?)

Edit: oh, and there's no cooldown on skills...

I took my first break from Warframe since starting in 2013 to play ME:A as I wanted a break from grinding, and all was good until the bloatathon. Back to playing both now, tried Destiny 2 beta. Strong maybe there.

Yeah, I don't believe it's all that straight-forward either. I am 100% sure.

I pre-order the standard edition for destiny 2, we will see how it goes. As much as I hated how Destiny 1 was at launch and their pricing model, Bungie did support the game. I am willing to pay for more expansions if they got it right this time. No more purple engrams turn into green weapons nonsense.

They never did. There is no love or care for the game and its players since release. It's made to be as automated as possible and a testing ground for the next game from Bioware. No interaction from devs other than modifiers for specific history missions, and that requires bare minimum interaction which they stopped doing since June. The remaining characters and weapons are already in the game, but they won't release them all at once since releasing piece by piece gives the illusion that they're active in this game. I believed the understaffed issues probably contribute a lot. EA/Bioware pulled the plug probably right after launch. They missed a huge chance here to expand the franchise.
