Hidy ho all,
I've posted a couple of times about this in the past. But my sexuality has come into question as of late. Most of my life, I've been attracted to women. But I recently had a strong attraction to a male co-worker. Browsing around here, I can across the Kaiden Alenko romance thread, and I realized I think he might have been my first male-videogame-crush. So I'm starting up a fem shep, to romance him, and see what happens. Maybe I won't like it, maybe I will, we'll have to see.
But since this is my first time playing as a fem shep, I'm curious what else there is to see thats different for a female shep thats different for a male shep. Any funny dialogs? Places to see? Something else I'm not thinking of?
Oh, and while i've beaten mass effect 6 times now, there are those who haven't. So any spoilers, please put in spoiler tags.

In general, Jennifer Hale's line delivery contains more emotional inflection than Mark Meer's. This is sometimes good, sometimes not so good. One area of her line delivery I dislike is how she asks to enter into more casual (not ship related) conversations with Jacob in ME2... makes her seem like a bit of a harlot even if, say, she's being intentionally completely loyal to Kaidan throughout the Trilogy and it just seems to not fit with a "commander" asking a crewmen for some casual input about, say, their past history in the Alliance, etc. If you don't want to wind up romancing Jacob, you'll want to learn to overlook her sexy inflection in that line. In my opinion, Kaidan overall has much better dialogue with Shepard in ME3 than Ashley does. That is, I find it very difficult to "justify" a romantic interest in Ashley as a MaleShep throughout the middle part of ME3 (I find her somewhat cold), although the sex scene and the final goodbye part in London is nicely done for Ashley. Kaidan has much more dialogue that is indicative of couple working out their issues; however, the final goodbye to Kaidan, IMO, is not quite as well done as Ashley's. FemShep has more "fun" dancing in ME3 if she switches her romantic interest to Garrus in ME2

Romance Samantha for some interesting dialogue.
When talking to the batarian to be a freelancer, he will have a line of dialogue that will give you a renegade interrupt.
Harkin will have a line for femshep, in ME1 when asking about Garrus, that makes you want to drop-kick him to the next planet
Eve will have a line of dialogue when talking with her in the medbay

A few characters will acknowledge that Shepard is a women both in misogynistic ways but also in positive ways. Jennifer Hale is probably an overall better voice actor than Meer but she doesn't top Meer in some of the renegade interrupts and dialog. P.S. you know you can romance Kaiden as a male shep but only in ME3 so if you're looking to role play more as yourself and your current feelings his romance arc could be very similar to what you're going through now.

Good to know hunter, thanks for that spoiler tagged hint. This might actually make me want to load up an old save into 3, and give it a whirl. But I don't have any saves where he survives. And that save creator where you follow a comic style narritive doesn't quite sit well with me. I have used it in 3, and...it was kinda meh.
But if I get tired of playing 1 for the 9th time, I might have to try it out and go from there. I'm already noticing some differences in the first Eden Prime cut scene, and the aftermath on the Normandy. Normally Ash is the one getting too close to the beacon. But this time around, Kaiden was the one who got close, and my shep had to come to his rescue.
Then he was in the med bay asking after me, and standing right outside the door (normally ash is in both places). Very interesting so far.

'What do you need me to do?' Hale's delivery is perfect. Chokes me every time. Overall I just think she's a better VA than Meer. Not that Meer's bad, he's not, but Hale tops him for me.

Roles between Ashley and Kaidan also switch in ME1 when Shepard and crew of taking in the view from the wards (area near flux between Dr. Michel's med clinic and the markets). Be sure to trigger that conversation first off when you have both Ashley and Kaidan in your squad.

To give Meer some credit, he has a really big range of character types. He could probably do a "better" (YMMV of course) Shepard easily but was restricted by the way the ME team at Bioware wanted him to act Shepard out.

Also playing "My first FemShep", and a romanced Kaidan in 1, but switched to Garrus in 2. At the start of 3 I was very torn between the two, Kaidan's warmer than Ashley (my choice for my previous ManShep runs), but Garrus also greeted me with open arms. Finally decided on Garrus (I've been told he'll take me dancing) but I can seen the Kaidan attraction. I fear my FemShep is in an even more troublesome love triangle than my Sheploo was with Ash and Miranda. Kaidan doesn't seem to demand you openly chose between him and your new fella. I've only assumed his romance locks in at a similar place and time to Ash's and Garrus' "Do you love me?" came up first. This is very different to Ash, you asks you to chose between her and Miranda quite openly and straightforwardly (that's our Ash for you). Bonus is, nobody appears to be heartbroken or cries when you tell them it's all over, or die because of it, I hope. One drawback is that FemShep doesn't look half as awesome slinging Kaidan over her shoulder on Mars as ManShep does cradling Ashley in his arms. But i'm a silly romantic fool, possibly with a crush on ManShep. There's nothing wrong with Jennifer Hale's voice performance, but personally I prefer Mark Meer. There are times when having a bit of emotional depth has payed off, but I've found that Meer's cool, calm, collected, professional voice, "Don't worry folks, Commander Shepard's here, I've got this." fits the bill for the experienced, highly trained, professional soldier guy i'm playing as. I think I could see the mask start to crack in ME3, he's tired, he's starting to doubt himself, he's starting to lose hope, where as my FemShep is the same girl she always was. Nothing really seems to affect her, but maybe that's because i haven't gotten to Rannoch yet. Then again, part of the thing I appear to have for ManShep is his voice.

Good to know hunter, thanks for that spoiler tagged hint. I can send you my first save of ME3 with him (last entry of the page) as protag - Kaidan was saved in Virmire and is intended to be romanced (was in fact - I just finished the PT). You'll find that romance subdued and tasteful.

Timing for the lock-in with either Kaidan or Garrus are very much the same as with Ashley and Miranda. That is, you can't tell them you're not interested in renewing early in the game and you have to give them the "right" gift in hospital. If you do indicate that you're still interested early in the game, an opportunity to meet on the Citadel will come up that will enable you to lock in to that romance or break it off. If you lock in with one first, the subject just doesn't come up with the second. Neither Kaidan nor Garrus will die if you break it off with them (to the best of my knowledge); whereas Miranda can be tough to keep alive if not pursuing the romance with her throughout ME3. A romance with Thane, of course, works a little differently since he does die just after the Coup. There is no opportunity to renew a romance with Kaidan if Shep opts to rekindle the romance with Thane before the Coup.

In ME1 Ashley and Kaidan's roles swap based on Shepard's sex, so that the writers could set up the romances early (eg. Shep always rescues the potential love interest from the beacon on Eden Prime). In that respect, they're almost entirely interchangeable - romantic palette swaps, you could say. This is even more pronounced in the later games, where there is essentially a storyline slot for the 'virmire survivor' and it doesn't really matter which one of them it is. Given your personal experience, it might be more true to your own experience to play the entire trilogy with Kaidan being your bro in ME1, a distant strained friendship in ME2, and then have the romance blossom in ME3. (I must say, having to shoot down Kaidan's overtures in ME3 when playing a straight Sheploo felt super awkward, and all the more real because of that awkwardness). For lulz, in the ME1 playthrough you should romance both Ash and Liara, choose Ash when they confront you, and then leave Ash on Virmire. That way you get all the romance content but still start ME2 as a single man.)

I then had her end up with Traynor, where i ended up imprompto LARPing that femshep was fed up with her misfortunes with men and wanted to try out a woman instead.

If I decide I'm done with 1, I'll ask you for the save. I normally don't like using other people's saves, because I'm never sure exactly what decisions they choose.
Thanks for the feedback all! I'm going to visit the wards clinic and Choras den with my original 3 party members. Looking foward to seeing some interesting dialog.

You could just start playing ME1 at Virmire and leave Ash with the bomb. That way you don't have to play the whole thing.

I love all of Mark Meer's minor roles in the game; he voiced all Hanar and all Vorcha and he's Pitne For aka "I am a biotic god!". Unfortunately, none of his improv comedic talent made it to Shepard unless you think he was deadpanning all the time. However, it made a lasting impact on players who started out with BroShep who felt FemShep is too emotional when the same thing could be said for Brian Bloom's Trooper (who I absolutely adored!). I was surprised at first at how cold BroShep is to everyone, unless the person he's talking to is romanceable to him. If the character seem uninteresting to him, Meer as himself, he will let it show. Which is a different case with Hale. She's a technical actor with decades of experience. She approach any scene and everyone like they matter to her personally as Shepard. She didn't deaden her voice when she talk to someone she didn't like; instead she'll be annoyed, angry, frustrated and trigger-happy whenever the scene suit Shepard. And its a big noticeable change between both VAs portrayal of the same character; Meer portray Shepard as a blank slate scifi military hero archetype in an RPG, Hale portray Shepard as a hardened soldier who happened to be a woman, but she did portray similarly as a blank slate for SWTOR. Alas, the only thing that matter in the end was romance options. Mass Effect 1 Harkin get all sleazy and inviting "Princess" Shepard to dance on top of him. If you hit 80% renegade in Mass Effect 1 and you'll get UNC: The Negotiation, Shepard will have a conversation with a misogynistic jerk named Warlord who think the Alliance send a slut to him to change his mind about them... I kid you not. Conrad Verner will call her the "beautiful Commander Shepard" in ME1 and talk about his wife will be happy about it.
Mass Effect 2 Miranda saying "she's just a woman". If the idea that Shepard being too flirty with Jacob is too much, avoid talking to him until after you do his loyalty quest. FemShep will still tease him but Jacob is more guarded. But I could play that she was doing it purposely to read Jacob, and he's too easily lead. Garrus will say something about how women love men with scars. (I don't know... intelligence and maturity is more attractive to me than scars) Thane will call FemShep as Siha (One of the warrior-angels of the goddess Arashu. Fierce in wrath. A tenacious protector.) but he will only tell you the meaning of it if you're in romance with him. However, I feel that he only saw his long-dead wife in Shepard because that's how he saw her in the comics. The “I don’t care if it’s you or this bitch; I just want good times” Turian in Afterlife
Mass Effect 3 Vega will always flirt with female Shepard. Choosing Renegade path won't change much except he won't give nicknames and he;ll skip some flirt lines. Wrex will talk smack about women talking too much and then he realized he was talking to one... lol There's probably similar talk with Wreav but I like him better when Kalross killed him so... Eve will talk about how humanity placing a lot of responsibility in a woman like Shepard and both of them share a moment about showing the men how things girls get it done. If FemShep recite the prayer with Kolyat, she'll realize that the prayer was dedicated to her specifically. FemShep could flirt with Joker at Purgatory Club. Not really FemShep-specific line, but you'll found out that Conrad Verner completely lied about having a 'wife'. Meet the first customer of Shepard VI.
For FemShep/Kaidan stuff; if you want to completely spoil yourself; Mass Effect 1 Kaidan was drawn to the beacon and have more to say to FemShep as he crushed on her (try talking to him at the docking bay). He have more to say to her in ME1 than he does with BroShep, particularly how he think of her along the line of "beautiful woman + beaches + love" At the docking bay, he talk about the view and about having something worth protecting while looking at her. If you talk to Ashley, her sister will talk about Kaidan being cute and Ashley talking about him having soft for someone. If you flirt with him after you talk to Liara, he'll say he like adventurous women. You can have a confrontation scene with him and Liara and he didn't appreciate being lead on. You see FemShep's naked ass first but you already know about that. Mass Effect 2 TIM recommending Shepard to move on from past relationship. Joker isn't being subtle enough that he disapprove of their relationship and felt its a bad idea to date with crew. Kelly will ask about meeting Kaidan and ponder about her feelings Aria make a comment about Shepard looking like she a man to warm her bed (although I'm not sure it trigger for just FemShep with or without past romance)
Mass Effect 3 Early on, Shepard will call Kaidan by his name instead of just "Major" (even to Hackett, lol). Camera will pan longer on Kaidan staring at Shepard from behind at the shuttle bay. Liara asking Shepard about what keep her going and Shepard will say whenever things get difficult she thought about what she's going lose if she fail (camera pan to Kaidan.. heh) Kaidan will say "is the person I followed to hell and back --the person that I loved--are you still in there... somewhere?" FemShep will have specific lines about worrying over Kaidan with Liara (and her nightmares have more context as she have it whenever something happen to him.) If you romance Thane, Thane will ask her if she is the woman who Kaidan been waiting. Only in Citadel DLC, if you romanced Jacob, he will say something about your past with Kaidan. And James will ask if he's making things weird between her and Kaidan. While flirting with Joker, he will make a comment that he's "not Kaidan" about fraternizing with the crew while wearing the uniform. Shepard will check out Kaidan's rear when he joins the team. After their talk in the observation room; you can have the camera panning toward Kaidan look after her or the camera pan with her looking at him as she leave the room. Not really FemShep/Kaidan specific; if you lock-in romance before Admiral Koris rescue, Kaidan will complain that Shepard didn't wake him up for morning sex. Yep. And prior to Cronus Station, FemShep and Kaidan will have longer scene than BroShep's where she sat on top of him and they talk about their feelings for each other. You can choose to cuddle or have him lift her to the bed. (Before anyone could complain, if it wasn't for BroShep sharing their romance, their scene could have been longer. There are several cut dialogues including a part where Kaidan seducing a reluctant Shepard after she said her love for him)

I love all of Mark Meer's minor roles in the game; he voiced all Hanar and all Vorcha and he's Pitne For aka "I am a biotic god!". Unfortunately, none of his improv comedic talent made it to Shepard unless you think he was deadpanning all the time. I think Mark Meer's more "deadpan' delivery allows for more interpretation variation by the player. With Jennifer Hale's increased emotion, there is less room to interpret her lines in different ways. The best example is the her line in ME2 to Jacob: "I'm just interested in talking for a bit." There's nothing wrong with the words in the line, but the way Hale delivers the line leaves no doubt that it's a come on. Well, what if I don't want my Shepard coming on to Jacob? The line hardly suits a player characterization of a tough female commander who follows regs to the letter and romances no one on their crew. I can more easily "imagine" a subtle indication of interest in Mark Meer's voice, say, when he talks to Tali and keeps asking her more and more questions about her pilgrimage, etc.... but I can't easily "turn off" Hale's "come hither" voice inflection when she just doesn't want to start a romance with Jacob. While a lot of people like that FemShep can definitively outsass cold-hearted mercs... I does make it more difficult to characterize her as the sort of girl who just lets flirtations slide (if that's an alternate character trait the player would like to build into their personal FemShep). Mark Meer's more neutral delivery is more flexible that way. As for the comedic relief in the game... the role of Shepard is really written to be the straight man... particularly in ME1 where it's Joker and Wrex who are really the designated comedians of the game. In ME2, there are more lines given to Shepard that are intentional comedy... and Meer, IMO, delivers them just fine... a bit of gangsta accent in "You're workin' too hard." Just the right amount of cold intimidation in "Drink it, or I'll blind you one eye at a time." Nothing overdone. In ME3... he does a lot of lines just waay better than Hale. "The best" at the end of the Citadel DLC was, for example, delivered perfectly by Meer. He sounds absolutely sincere. Hale's voice inflection there sounds more "trite" to me.

There is another difference with femShep in ME2 When doing Garrus' loyalty mission, let him shoot Harkin then pick the renegade speech option and Shep will say: "You're lucky. I wouldn't have shot you in the leg."
Which is not what mShep says: "You're getting off easy, Harkin."

I think Mark Meer's more "deadpan' delivery allows for moresinterpretation variation by the player. Most Bioware protagonists are written as a gender-neutral. Shepard doesn't have canon gender or canon sexuality. Maybe the "interpretation variation" suits most player RP-ing themselves as MaleShep but really, all he does was imitating a cardboard; bland, absent, emotionless, soulless and constipated. It really make no difference if the character is voiced since he tried his best to act like he's a voiced silent protagonist. And apparently, it took two installments for an actor to be allowed to emote and magically he's not "too emotional" if he does it? There are a lot of voice male protagonists since Meer; Nicholas Boulton, Nolan North, David Hayter, Brian Bloom, etc and they're all experienced professional actors and they do keep up with their female counterparts. There's exactly zero flame wars between Jennifer Hale and Brian Bloom despite being the same special ops military character because they complement each other. That's what it should've been for either Shepard. I don't need to make excuses for someone's acting because he identified himself with the players' desire to self-insert more than he does with the character he's playing. This is why Meer is the first and last time Bioware hire an amateur to lead their franchise.

Honestly I always find it much eeasier to headcannon when a character has a more defined voice then a less defined voice. Probably the second leading cause of my headcanons and my preferebility to certain characters.

I haven't actually had a chance to pick the game up since Thursday. Well...chance and desire. I almost never play one game at a time. Typically I'm playing 2 or 3 at once, especially if I've played them before.
But so far, I will admit to prefering the male sheps story. Though I also admit it could be because I've played it so many times I've gotten used to it. And this fem shep play through is new.
Either way, i've read some of those different conversations in spoiler tags. And I really do want to experience some of them myself.

How do you headcannon your way around that one?
