I like geology, OK?? I used to live near this one: Vesuvio (Mt. Vesuvius), Province of Napoli, Campania, Itay
This is one of the most impressive to visit: And it was named by Captain George Vancouver after his friend, an English lord, Allyene FitzHerbert ...aka Baron Saint Helens. Mount St. Helens, Cowlitz/Skamania Counties, Washington, USA This one experienced the second most recent eruption within the continental US (in 1914), and the the main attraction of one of the most beautiful national parks in the nation. Lassen Peak, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California It is said that it is wise to climb this volcano once, but to climb it twice is foolish. I have climbed it exactly twice. ε―士山, Fujisan, Mount Fuji, Shizuoka Prefecture/Yamanashi Prefecure, Japan This one is the symbol of Kagoshima, a sister city of Naples, Italy, and means "cherry blossom island." It also erupts constantly. Sakurajima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The city of Kagoshima is in the foreground This one is the namesake for all others. The ancient Greeks believed the fire god Vulcan to have his forge here. Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy This one generated the second largest eruption of the 20th century and ejected so much ash into the atmosphere that it lowered temperatures globally for several years. Its name means "to grow." Mount Pinatubo, Pampanga /Tarlac/Zambales Provinces, Republic of the Philippines This one seriously damaged the city of Shimabara in southern Japan during its eruptive cycle in the 1990s. ι²δ»ε²³, Mount Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan
Below is a frightening video of a pyroclastic flow from Unzen, a fast-moving and deadly cloud of burning ash and gas. This pyroclastic flow killed world-famous French geologists Maurice and Katia Krafft and 40 Japanese journalists. This video, however, was later used by US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Philippine Volcanic Survey (PHILVOLCS) to help convince the US Air Force to evacuate Clark Air Base and to evacuate tens of thousands of Filipinos ahead of Pinatubo's massive 1990 eruption, saving many lives indeed. Pyroclastic flows from Vesuvius in 79 AD served to doom all inhabitants of the Roman resort of Pompeii who had not yet evacuated; they also buried and preserved the remains of the city (as seen in the top photo). Here is a hella video from Indonesia showing a pyroclastic flow moving over the sea. According to Roman author Pliny the Younger, pyroclastic flows from Vesuvius may have traveled miles across the Bay of Naples to blot out the sun near Cape Misenum. Note also that pyroclastic flows make almost no sound. If you're interested in talking about volcanoes, please let me hear from you! I'm not a geologist, but if you want to hear from one, read Dr. Erik Klemetti's blog: www.wired.com/category/science/science-blogs/eruptions/If you feel like fearmongering about the ZOMG Yellowstone SOOPAVOLCANO!!!!!! please read Dr. Klemetti's blog posts on that first

I studied volcanoes in college a bit (I have a certificate in geological study, though you can get those for a class that has 'lab hours' of more than 20 hours a semester, and I happened to take a course with it.) I even like the idea of being a volcanologist (and a minerologist).
I've been to dozens of volcanoes in my life (I'm an avid mountain climber), most of them dormant or extinct, but a few active. Rainier, Hood, and Shasta are the three strato-volcanoes I've climbed in the US, and I've also been on Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Kiluea, though these were all shield volcanoes, so not technically 'climbs'. I've also been to Crater Lake (technically the collapsed remnants of Mt. Mazama) a couple of times, and hiked around the base of Wizard Island.
In Arizona, I've also climbed several of the San Francisco peaks, which are all mostly extinct volcanoes, and visited the SP Volcano. In Hawaii, I've been on Haleakala and Diamond Head.
Man, this makes me miss the Army. I got to travel around so much and have so much free time to do all this. I'm arguably in even better shape now, but I just don't have the access to do it.
Abroad, I've been to several volcanoes in Japan, Pinatubo in the Philippines, Vesuvius (just a visit to the region), Mt. Etna, and Stromboli. I've also been to several of the volcanic islands in the Caribbean, though I wouldn't say that I actually climbed around many of them sans Mt. Pelee in Martinique.
In December, I will be in Iceland; I'm fully expecting to fall in love with the place (as so many people I know have), and can't wait especially to visit several of the volcanoes there to climb on. I also plan on moving to New Zealand (or at least visiting for the long-term), and I anticipate climbing at least one or two volcanoes there. The two great island countries of Fire and Ice.

You can drink lava once. My favorite volcano would have to be I saw Dante's Peak in theaters when it came out. Then shortly after that, Volcano came out and there was a massive trend of tv movies about volcanos around the time.

We actually sat on a field of cooled lava (pumice) and watched the lava flow into the sea at night on the big island of Hawai'i. It's hard to convey what that was like. Moving, powerful, beautiful and terrible are all words that apply. William Blake's poem "The Tyger" probably comes closest.

Volcanos are scary They're also the reason the Earth is capable of bearing life. Also, that image is pure Hollywood imagery. We'll have months (or even years) of warning before the Yellowstone Caldera blows. You'll be safe

It must be nice to travel so much, I understand the facination with volcanos, they're amazing. I hope you have an enjoyable trip to Iceland, I'm betting it will a wonderful experience. It is really nice, and I'm fortunate to have had parents that both had jobs that took them across the world (I'm a Navy brat), and a military job that had me moving constantly across the United States (and a few overseas postings) which were how I was able to visit volcanoes in Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, and Italy. Plus, I have a lot of family and a few close friends in the western United States who I visit frequently (mostly so that I'm in range of being able to visit all of these areas.) They also instilled in me the virtues of travel and living with a reasonable amount of simplicity. I don't get fettered down with constructs such as property or real estate or even luxurious stuff. Nor do I waste time and money on relationships that might drain my bank account. There's a trade-off to being able to travel so much, but I'm the perfect person for it. And thank you! I hope you too are able to make it to Iceland! I've never been, but from what I've seen and heard, it's probably going to be one of my favorite places. Volcanoes and places with wild geology/geography and raw nature just draw me more than places of cultural significance. The places that are wild and untamed and presenting of physical challenge and reward.

I've been to a lot of volcanoes in Iceland. I even stood in one - the Krafla Volcano. Last time it erupted was in the 70's as far as I can remember. It was not so inactive, the ground I was walking on was really warm, there were hot boiling springs all round it and the smell of sulfur was overwhelming. One of the calderas. Thats the one where I climbed inside. Note the sulfur fumes coming out of the ground. The hot sulfur smokers in the Krafla area: The whole place was really active. Hot springs. I visited that place at 1 o clock in the morning and the strangely beautiful landscape made me feel like I was on another planet. Only my space suit was missing. Really alien and unique atmosphere. Also, the strange thing is the friends I traveled with had troubles dealing with the sulfur in the air. They got sick and suffered form severe headaches. The strange part is I was exposed to at least as much sulfur if not more and I felt great. I was running around exploring the area and taking pictures while my friends sat down fighting against the urge to puke their guts out.

This volcano is about an hour from where I live, give or take. I visited it once a few years back: Mt. Saint Helens, which erupted in 1980. This volcano is also a few hours from where I live: Mt. Rainier. My undergrad uni had the greatest view of this mountain on clear days, since you could stand in the campus quad and see it framing the city skyline. This is from the country where my family lived before moving to the states: Harrat Khaybar. Underwhelming compared to the previous volcanoes, but apparently my family lived fairly close to it for several years. It hasn't erupted since CE 650.

I'm glad i live no where near any volcanoes, pretty scary stuff when active..
But it does look amazing.
And i'm always scared just to think that there is always magma below us somewhere, creeps me out a little bit for some reason..

The blue glowing lava from that volcano in Indonesia is pretty damn cool too. (Caused by an extremely high concentration of sulfur)

It also messed up air traffic more than once with its impressive clouds of ash. EyjafjallajΓΆkull, Iceland That one got my dad an unexpected flight layover in Vienna, Austria when he was supposed to be flying to the US!
Can any of you Vikings out there tell us how to pronounce EyjafjallajΓΆkull? I've just taken to calling it "Efjell," which is probably a profanity in Iceland.
We have only inactive or semi-active volcanoes. Stratovolcano Damavand
Elevation: 5,610 mActive stratovolcano Taftan
Elevation: 3,941 mInactive stratovolcano Sabalan
Elevation: 4,811 m Persian volcanoes, right? Nice Fun fact: The role of Mount Doom in LOTR was played in part by real-life volcano Ruapehu in New Zealand. No word on compensation or arrangements with the Screen Volcano Union though. I studied volcanoes in college a bit (I have a certificate in geological study, though you can get those for a class that has 'lab hours' of more than 20 hours a semester, and I happened to take a course with it.) I've had fun with sulfur fumes at the Gran Cono of Vulcano (where the signs say DO NOT CROUCH OR LIE DOWN), at the Solfatara in the Phlegrean Fields in Italy, and on Showa-Shinzan peak on Mt. Usu in Hokkaido, Japan (where I had enough sense to wear gloves so I didn't burn my hands!) This is from the country where my family lived before moving to the states: Harrat Khaybar. Underwhelming compared to the previous volcanoes, but apparently my family lived fairly close to it for several years. It hasn't erupted since CE 650. Very cool, Techno. This satellite image is great because you can see the expanse of the volcanic field and the extent of one of the more recent lava flows. It looks like the moon Io Or maybe some wilderness on Palaven? I assume you are either a Washingtonian or Oregonian Turian then!

Also, here's one more Pacific Northwest volcano I have visited. Newberry Volcano in central Oregon, which is sort of a "stealth" volcano because it's hard to identify unless you are in the air or actually inside the caldera. Despite this, it is a massive volcano that covers an extensive area and features a big obsidian lava flow called (wait for it) The Big Obsidian Flow. It's sort of a mutant shield/stratovolcano. Medicine Lake Volcano in California, which I have never been to, appears similar. Newberry from Lava Butte nearby The Big Obsidian Flow from Paulina Peak, the highest point on Newberry. Medicine Lake Volcano, with Mount Shasta in the background. Speaking of Shasta, This big (14000ft+) stratovolcano is rather notorious for the weird cults that have been associated with it as well as being associated with two soft drink companies: Shasta Beverages and CG Roxane Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water (which sometimes includes images of Shasta on the label). Although supposedly the water is not of particularly high quality?
