And this is exactly what I mean when I said people who wanted historical accuracy in Battlefield (and they've been around for a while now) were painted with the same brush as those who are sexist. And this is one of the reasons why the backlash happened. If devs want to treat people who have always wanted historical accuracy in Battlefield as sexist the minute it involves a disabled woman on the front lines (sure, view them as ridiculous if you like but they're not sexist), then I know I would want nothing to do with them. I'm completely against this trend of devs and media attacking the fanbase whenever it's convenient or advantageous for them to do so. This is exactly what Boogie talked about in his video.

Cowen is also a respectable analytical agency. They have previously used Amazon best sellers, some reports say they switched to Gamestop best sellers, and yet their analysis is usually strong. This goes back to being a respectable agency with a solid reputation, which implies they have a solid methodology.

It's a story picked up by Stocknews, which is a single news outlet more reputable than all the gaming websites you mentioned combined. Because gaming journalists have a reputation of being bloggers in the world of ACTUAL journalism.

Battlefield 1 felt more like a game belonging to the WW2 era instead of WW1 due to an overabundance of semi and fully automatic weapons, many of which were only deployed in very small numbers or even never left the prototype stage. And there were moments in the game where it felt like the Central Powers were merely the Axis with different uniforms, given how biased BF1 is against them. DICE's own predecessor helped saturating the WW2 shooter market, in a way.

This "WW2 instead of WW1" feeling was complained about often... but since those complaints didn't touch any "social justice" topics, they didn't get much of a reaction.

Reducing the BFV controversy to "eww there's whammens in my game" is intellectually dishonest. I'm pretty sure there was no bitching about Zara being in BF1, or the Russian female snipers and tank commanders in CoH2.

But then again, I'm probably expecting too much from DICE right now. They've shown where they are headed with BF1, where I learned to my surprise that the Kaiser's army apparently contained 25% Africans, heck the poster boy of the vanilla game was a black guy with German weapons. It had Americans as a playable faction just so it could have more black people, while no matter how hard you looked, there wasn't a single French soldier to be seen during the battle of Amiens. You know, that town in France.

And I have no problem with any of that, I would just like for DICE to admit that they're making their versions of WW1 and 2 instead of bullshitting us with "immersed in WW2 like never before". They erase entire factions from their game and instead include minorities that were present in homoeopathic doses at best. It is totally fine for them to make their game the way they want, of course. And it's just as fine to not buy it.

Digital sales have passed a tipping point and I expect GameSpot will have gone bust within 5 years.

In terms of pre-orders they're coming off of Battlefront 2; which was a PR disaster with all their MTs. So, take that into consideration.

Much will be answered by actually playing the game.

I preordered the game, the first Battlefield game I've ever pre-ordered.
I'm looking forward to sharing my findings from the beta on the 4th (next week).

I like having choices in a game, so I suspect I'll be playing as a range of characters.

And to those who are easily triggered and don't want to play, they also have that choice and that right, that's fine too.
Possibly not the best marketing move from EA to antagonize some players but at least it's honest to explain what's in the game.
I guess we'll see soon enough what the prognosis is, post-launch.
