I was surprised to see this board doesn't have its own Star Trek thread yet. No, not surprised - more like APALLED! So here you go, Trekkies of the world, unite! Considering a brand new series just came out, I'm really curious on your opinions here. In case you bothered to watch it, that is. Or if you want to discuss anything else related to Star Trek, please do!

You know Dreamowl, I was thinking exactly the same, but you beat me to opening this topic!
I watched both episodes of Discovery last night, and although there wasn't any sign of the titular ship yet, I was impressed with what I saw!
I do need to get used to the 'new' Klingon look, since they look more like the Abramstrek Klingons than the TMP ones.
Though I can't say much about the storyline yet, I'm definitely interested in the rest of the season.
I don't mind that the protagonist is a non-white woman either, unlike some apparently... Something about SJWs blah blah.
And it's great NOT being a 'murrican for once, being able to watch this on Netflix and all 😎.
On a side note: I also watched Star Trek Into Darkness last weekend and absolutely loved it. I think it was a better movie than the first 'reboot' one, and better than Wrath of Khan (*hides behind the couch*)

I watched the first two episodes of Discovery last night and thought it was terrible. I only give it a three out of ten so far and if it does not improve in the next two episodes i will not watch it again. The story for me was in a fourth division of writing.

So far I like The Orville better. I'm hoping the STD will develop the characters further and I will like it more.
The above doesn't mean I hate it. I'd rate The Orville at 6 out of 10 and STD (so far) 4 out of 10. Both shows have the potential to do better and it would be nice if they both step up their game.

I saw the first episode yesterday, and totally loved it. Love the characters and the Klingons of yesteryear. It feels like it is going to have a continuing story but still have the Star Treck feel of hope and fun. The only thing I did not like that they made Klingons speak with subtitles during the big scene. Imo it worked great in the opening when it ended with the "we come in peace", but reading just lessened the impact of the Torchbearer.

Thanks for your opinions, people! I'm happy to see a few fellow Trekkies here! I kinda forgot to add my own opinion in the first post, whoops. xD I enjoyed the first two episodes more than I had anticipated. I didn't expect it to look that good in terms of set designs and special effects. There are interesting characters so far, and I am curious to know more about them. I was a bit surprised not to see Jason Isaacs yet, but then again, it's a fresh approach not to introduce all the main characters right away. I like that. I am curious on how the story will continue and I see many ways for future development. But honestly, the Klingons?! And I don't critizise their physical appearance, but the strange golden ships and the shiny bling bling armor? Would a warrior wear that? I think not. They are too sleak, too shiny, and I don't really buy the unity thing just yet. It all went a bit too smooth for my taste, with practically zero effort. I hope they lose that "generic" feeling I still have for them. And yeah, as Transcended One mentioned, for once we Europeans don't have to pay extra to watch it, as there will be a new episode every week on Netflix.

I thought the series will show us the beginnings of Klingons we see in the previous Star Trecks, and explain why the highly ornamental barbaric decadence and shaved heads change to simple armor and long hair. The thing is, I loved the bling, because it reminded me the old warrior cultures were men showed their status off by wearing copious amount of jewelry and colourful complicated raiment. The thing is, the switch to austere look for males did not occur in human cultures till very late in our history due to utilitarian concerns. So, yeah, I enjoy the open barbaric opulence of the ancient Klingons, and can't wait to see what kicked of wearing their hair long. Maybe it will be some sort of a blood oath to defeat the Federation or something. Also want to see the evolution of bat'leth. Pardon my spelling, I am sure I am not writting it correctly.
AnywY, I hope this does not offend long-time fans, etc.

I have some unconventional opinions myself about many things including Star Trek (like liking The Motion Picture for example)... At least the Klingon ships look more "alien" than the relatively "clean" ship designs of the past, while still bearing some resemblance to the Matt Jefferies designed D7-cruiser.

Watching STD now. (STD... ugh) On the ships thing: something to remember. Almost all of the ships in Star Trek were real models. The Negh'var for instance, had a 20'+ mock up of it's underbelly for the Defiant attack shots. They were constrained by what the real world modelers could achieve. Now? They can go nuts. I'm glad they're using what they have now to create updated versions of what we know. On STD: I just hope the writing actually shows some of the depth as well as entertainment. From what I've watched so far I am entertained, but not really intrigued. I'm a good ways through episode 1 thus far. We'll see what I think of 2.

Sonequa is a great actress. Hopefully the writing can live up.
I have heard mixed reviews, but Godzilla wraps today (!) and I will have a little time in the next week or two to binge on it a little. If it ain't worthy, then I am definitely going to be sad.

First off: It's hilarious that this is being abbreviated to STD.
That out of the way I watched a bit of it and I really didn't care for it. The characters didn't grip me, the story wasn't interesting, and the acting wasn't all that great(which might not be the fault of the actors themselves admittedly). The visuals look very much like the film, but I also called that pretty generic sci-fi at the time of the movies coming out.
As far as the "main character" is concerned to be honest the fact that they even mentioned that at all feels like PR speak, because Star Trek has always been a story involving all of the main officers of the crew. It's not like TNG put more time on Picard than other major characters, so claims that any one character is the lead just ring hollow to me.
Beyond that I don't really care that the crew is built for diversity. It's something that Trek has always done since the 60s, but I still don't find any of them terribly interesting from how much I watched. It's just a shame that criticisms about this sort of thing in today's world have a habit of getting bogged down with "Muh SJWs" and "You just don't like them because they aren't white men" accusations rather than a discussion about the actual merits of the writing and acting of the characters themselves.
On a side note I also watched the first three episodes of The Orville last night. It's a fun show to watch and I enjoyed it more than Discovery, but as far as a Trek fix goes it's way too comedic of a show and you really have to like Seth MacFarlane's particular style of comedy to enjoy it. It's still something I look forward to seeing more of, though.
I'll give Discovery some time and hope that maybe the problems will be worked out in time. Hell it's not like the other series were all amazing from the start either.
However for now, I'm not that excited to see more of it.

Watched the first two epis. Liked it. And am already anticipating future episodes. If they can up the ante with it in terms of writing and characterdepth, I´m hooked.

Most of Disovery's writing problems happened with the background scenes and information. Most of the present day stuff is really solid.

The first season of TNG was pretty hit or miss, IMO. I did not like it initially, but grew to love it.
That said, there is no Roddenberry. RIP.

Dreamowl, thank you for your fascinating thread, I love everything Star Trek (like I try so hard to hide it), but I have absolutely no interest in this new thing, to be honest everything I've seen so far about this I hate. "Extremely disappointed" to say the least. They fucked the Trek canon big style. LLAP.

Some of the best ST episodes were the one's that were stripped down to the basics e.g. good characterization, dialogue and story with great interplay between the different characters. These episodes were often deceptively simple maybe a small group of characters in a confined space with no fancy sets or sfx.
I'm thinking DS9 Duet and TOS The Empath. Duet is more an examination of evil, guilt, regret and atonement and the nature of justice (justice or revenge?). The Empath is about the essential nature of friendship, love and sacrifice. You don't need lens flare overkill, excessive noise, frantic aimless running about and explosions when you get the basics right, character, story and good dialogue.

Ooo... we finished the second part last night. I am disappointed that Philippa died, because, omg, she was awesome!
I am not that big on Michael, because of a whole Vulcan angle, but I am guessing she is going get the sentence commuted for front-lines or get Tom Paris sort of a deal? I really hope to see an Andorian in this Treck in a crew or that new alien that seemed to be fairily prominent in the first two episodes. I can't help but to dig the new Krogans, but imo they should stop the subtitles. Yeah, it's artistic, but it just lost the initial impact upon repetition. I am really someone a typical Treck fan would probably abhor, because I started watching Treck when I was on a job assignment in England (the most miserable time in my life, I think) and it was Voyager in a late season, and it still remains my favorite Treck. And, yes, I love B'elana and Janeway and stuff. I like the DS9 a lot too, and the new movies, TNG less so, and was never able to get the nostalgic appeal of the original, did not like, so did not watch Archer ST (terribly dull) and the old movies with animated series, well, I can't watch it. So, yeah, not ye typical Trek person.

Watched the first 2 episodes yesterday. Better than I expected, good enough for me to keep watching at least. Whether it will get better or worse as the series goes on, who knows?

I agree that Duet was a superb episode with some great performances. Probably the best first season episode (which isn't too hard actually since DS9's first season is pretty weak overally). But The Empath? It had some decent minutes, like most episodes, but it seemed too much like a weak The Cage/The Menagerie-rehash to me. I consider it one of the weakest TOS-episodes. Ah well it's better than 'Miri' I guess...

DS9 was my favourite trek. I grew up on TNG and love it. DS9 was what I had been wanting but didn't really perceive. That and Babylon 5 at the time. (I never really understood the rivalry between the two and loved them both for different, albeit similar, reasons.)
In the Pale Moonlight was stunning, particularly at the time. Now after seeing how writing has gone in the years after; it's nothing short of hauntingly beautiful.
"...and if I had to do it all over again, I would."
Finally a leader that actually was faced with decisions that weren't just hard or difficult, but impossible. Going through a bramble bush wearing your honour and coming out the other end with nothing but tatters.
