This small DS9 panel hosted by Voyager's Garrett Wang featuring Aron Eisenberg (Nog) and Alexander Siddig (Julian Bashir) has some great Trek banter and anecdotes. I know it's a bit long but if you like DS9 it's worth a look. The guys are great together.

It's funny, despite Harry Kim being the second most boring character in V'ger (after Chokotoff obviously), the actor seems like a really cool guy!

Harry Kim is my favorite character in Voyager after Janeway, but hey, like I said, my opinions are like 180 degrees from what I expect everyone else to have, so...

All Star Trek series tackled serious concepts and characters faced personal tragedies/trauma but it was never consistently grim, now and again it would change the tone and would let it's hair down and have some fun. Remember, Dr Bashir as a 60's James Bond in "Our Man Bashir". BTW always liked the Bashir/Garak interaction and banter in DS9. Star Trek trivia: Alexander Siddig's (Dr Bashir) uncle is Malcolm McDowell who played the villain Dr Tolian Soran in ST Generations and Alex in Stanley Kubricks Clockwork Orange. Oh, I love Garak vs Bashir, and honestly, Garak vs anyone. That episode when they fly out Garak and Odo to the Changleings home world is a lot of thumbs up for me Garak is awesome. That particular episode is awesome too! I don't get American's baseball-obsession either. But apparently neither did the (rest of the) Federation, since it became more or less extinct at the start of Sisko's "reign". Another thing that didn't particularly interest me much was Archer's dauwg. But I've yet to see the rest of "Enterprise" to see if that changes (I'm guessing it won't). Oh and Chocotay's American-Indian thing is kind of meh... Harry Kim is my favorite character in Voyager after Janeway, but hey, like I said, my opinions are like 180 degrees from what I expect everyone else to have, so... Janeway is number 4 in my top-3 of least favourite Voyager characters, but it's fun to see that opinions about Voyager and it's crew vary so much from person to person, more than any other of the Star Trek shows.

Yeah, I just like the Voyager crew overall, like I said, and I thought Chocotay was really neat, but they sort of ran out of things for him by the end of the series once they stopped trying to ship Janeway and him.
I don't even remember anything from Enterprise. But we re-watched the other three newer series with our daughter (and we are still on DS9) so they are rather fresh in my memory.
I dunno if we will get the next Discovery tomorrow, because last time Crave TV was a day behind the broadcast.

I only really started to enjoy Voyager after they got rid of the ridiculous Kazon. They dragged the early Voyager seasons down, you'd be getting into an episode and then these guys would show up and completely ruin it. They were so risible and pathetic you could no longer take the story seriously. These are the type of aliens that a comedy show would create when making a spoof sci-fi, seriously did no one at the studio not notice or point out that these guys are crap?
What a dramatic fall in bad guy quality from the Borg, Gul Dukat and Jem'Hadar to the bloody awful Kazon. C'mon even the bloody Gorn from TOS were more convincing aliens, the Kazon made the Gorn look credible.
However, for the early seasons notable exceptions would be the Brad Dourif guest star appearances as killer Betazoid "Lon Suder". Such a great actor.

Is this Star Trek or a weird mash up of Battlestar Galactica, Aliens, and a little Cronenberg? That was awful... maybe as a non Trek thus would be enjoyabke, but it is failing as Trek.
And this episode caused my friend to drop CBSAA. She is usually lenient but this was so insulting to her usual sci fi of any sort bent she nearly threw the controller. I thought I was mad. Holy hell.

So people either like or hate the first two episodes of Discovery.
Canon-nazi's aside (were there any when TMP was released, or TNG?), apparently a lot of people expected it to be more like earlier shows. Episodic format, relatively weak first two seasons, all senior officers having a similar amount of screen time which would take at least two episodes to introduce them all... Which are possibly a few of the reasons why Enterprise didn't work as well as earlier shows.
So it's not enough Trek, only two characters got a proper introduction (plus a third who got a bit more lines then the rest of the unintroduced crew), and one of them dies. Sarek can mindmelt several lightyears away (I admit that this was ridiculous, but on the other hand, Spock was able to 'hear' VGer in his head in TMP while on Vulcan, and Troi was able to use her empathic powers over quite a distance, which are similarly ridiculous). The Klingons look too alien, and people dislike subtitles.
On a side note, what is this "Orville" I keep hearing about?

Klingons are still canonically mutating if I understand it correctly. I thought I was the only one who disliked the subtitles? I actually loved them in the first scene, for the sake of the "we come in peace" coming through stronger, it's just later on in the second episode it was slowing the scenes imo. I would not say "hated".
Anyway, we'll see when the next episode comes to Crave, fingers crossed it's tomorrow.
Dunno what Orville is, I assume a show on cable network of some sort. There is so many now, heh. EDIT: apparently it is a ST spoof.

The completely irrelevant comment - we were watching the DS9 episode where Eddington commented how a Gold uniform did not give you a captain's chair, and I do miss colorcoded uniforms in Discovery.
And, we are up to the point that Worf is back in DS9, and my kiddo got all happy because she recognized him.

I just watched a bit of episode 3 of ST:D. A character was complaining about her polyester allergy. In the future. Why would allergies be a problem? Why, especially, would polyester be a problem? And how, exactly, does a whine about allergies advance the story or develop character? I stopped watching at that point. Maybe the dialogue served an actual purpose, but it wasn't apparent at the time and it killed any enjoyment of the show.

Kirk got allergic in the movie, someone was allergic to pineapple in one of the episodes, so it's something that does happen in the verse. (sigh) I wish I could watch the third episode right now...

Klingons are still canonically mutating if I understand it correctly. I thought I was the only one who disliked the subtitles? Nah, far from that! It's a much heard complaint. I'm Dutch, and pretty much everything is subtitled here (besides shows for kids... unfortunately since it's always the same voices...) so I'm used to it. Which is probably one of the reasons why I don't understand people's issue with them. I do agree that that Klingon dude talked a bit slow, and it got a bit annoying, but that's different from disliking subtitles. We've had "cable" in my country in basically every home since the 80's, so again, I don't understand the big deal about 'having cable'. On a side note, what is this "Orville" I keep hearing about? Ah yes Seth McFarlane... As in the guy behind Family Guy and American Dad? I like neither of those shows, even though I watched through FG's first season to see if I like it, but it didn't stick... the show's humour is not for everybody as it seems. But I'll give The Orville a chance when it arrives here on Netflix or something, see if it's different.

[/quote] Well, in Canada specifically, it's really expensive to get specific cable packages vs US. Plus, for me personally, I can't follow many shows, because I simply do not have time, so we have Forged in Fire, Big Bang, documentaries that pop up here and there, and with Discovery that's as much as I would want to follow as in not being able to access all the episodes at any time. So, if they would have a full season on Netflix or Crave, maybe, but a new channel... no.

And more different streaming services (and/or HBO) will add on top of that. Luckily for me CBS, Disney, Hulu (and even Amazon) have no jurisdiction here (yet), so it's basically just Netflix, and a more 'local' service.

Well I've seen the third episode now, and I think it was interesting. At least the actual ship sees it's introduction, and there are more "important" characters than just Burnham this time around. Not sure what was so horrible about that allergy-scene by the way. I think Burnham's out-of-bed haircut was worse At least the episode is a bit 'more' in the direction of classic Star Trek, but still doing things in a different way. It might not be the most original show so far, but I think it's at least entertaining. It's the best Star Trek's 'first episode after the pilot' anyway...

Additional: (revised opinion)
I love everything Star Trek (like I try so hard to hide it), but I have absolutely no interest in this new thing, to be honest everything I've seen so far about this I hate, "Extremely disappointed" to say the least. They fucked the Trek canon big style. Now that I think about it, I don't hate it that's a far too lazy explanation for my lack of enthusiasm, oh no I even used "to be honest" in a sentence, talk about lazy I'm just a "basically" away from lethargy. In reality I really don't feel anything either way about Discovery, I feel numb about it. I've really become apathetic and don't expect much from Star Trek anymore.
I think I first lost interest during Star Trek Beyond, I was sitting there thinking the Spock, McCoy banter was enjoyable but the rest was just a dumb action movie with lots of running about and big bangs/SFX. They say ignorance is bliss and in this case they are right, I would have enjoyed the film more If I had left my brain at home. So really it begins at this point and I just can't face another shiny lens flare fest, my god I'm so sick of bloody lens flare overkill. So really I'm suffering from lens flare fatigue and I'm becoming allergic to slick visuals, and style over substance. So Beyond was the straw that broke the camels back and I just can't face any more. That's the real reason.

The completely irrelevant comment - we were watching the DS9 episode where Eddington commented how a Gold uniform did not give you a captain's chair, and I do miss colorcoded uniforms in Discovery. I believe there is still color-coding implemented, it's toned down though. The accents on the uniforms are metallic. That metallic color denotes specialization. Gold is still for Command, Silver was on the Science Officer, and a google search suggests Bronze for Operations.

Additional: (revised opinion) I love everything Star Trek At least you can stop lying to yourself now, since Star Trek Beyond already ruined that for you (first). I was indifferent about Star Trek 2009. Too much action and too little substance. People say the same about Star Trek Into Darkness. I absolutely loved nearly everything about that movie, which I didn't expect. I've yet to watch Beyond though. I do think the lens flares running gag is blown out of proportion. Star Trek Discovery is not the same as the Abrams movies. It's visual style is pretty similar (something I like, but if you're allergic to lens flares it could be problematic), but whatever is presented as the story so far is quite different.

Eddington is a security guy, Odo's ST counterpart in DS9. I will tell my kiddo to watch for the accents on the old new uniforms, she'd love that.

I believe there is still color-coding implemented, it's toned down though. The accents on the uniforms are metallic. That metallic color denotes specialization. Gold is still for Command, Silver was on the Science Officer, and a google search suggests Bronze for Operations. Yellow/gold was security/eng though, red was command. Eddington is a security guy, Odo's ST counterpart in DS9. Depends which trek, it's changed over the years. DS9 yes, but the Original series Gold was command. Goes back to the origins of "redshirt" trope, guaranteed death by the end of the episode. Also to note in ST:D, the famous trek insignia over the left breast now holds the pips associated with rank that were introduced in TNG on the collar. Actually, here it is all in one pic... (Alt-tabbed searching as I type this lol) *** E2 Spoiler inside. (It's a pretty big spoiler if you haven't seen to the end of episode 2 btw.) Interesting little blooper I caught. Blade first enter's left side of the chest, maybe upper heart region? Blade is now to the right of the torso. Whoops. Was re-watching with my girlfriend and caught that. Onto episode 3 shortly. *** On the Orville. I've watched the first episode. It pretty much was as expected. Not great, Macfarlane's humour is... spotty at best for me. The humour's managed a few internal chuckles, no genuine LOL's yet. Since I'll shortly be watching the last episode of this season of Rick and Morty I'll need something a bit more lighthearted to enjoy though so I'll give it more time. If by some strange chance you're considering the Orville and have never tried Rick and Morty I strongly suggest it. For the only show to even come close would be Frisky Dingo but that's some seriously abstract funny in the face of absurdity. (Ie. Not for everyone.)

Nice picture, thanks, I will show it to my kiddo, so she can have fun reading the ranks it if she can. She is crazy about spotting Morn in DS9.

For the curious... find the third and fourth episodes of The Orville. They are pure Trek. That show is nothing like Seth's previous wirk. It is trying to be the optimistic sci fi that Trek used to be.
