Now I think Reed kind of loses some of his arc sway to Trip in season 3 so we will see but its a funny perspective to have in a Stafleet officer running around... I thought there was no Starfleet at that time.

Now I think Reed kind of loses some of his arc sway to Trip in season 3 so we will see but its a funny perspective to have in a Stafleet officer running around... I thought there was no Starfleet at that time. There was a Starfleet at the time just not the Federation Starfleet. But this organization was essentially the precursor to that organization so a lot of the same mentality would end up carying over including many episodes dealing with a proto prime directive. As consistently written as ever. *** So episode 1.9 of Strange New Worlds. This show can now do horror well. This is quite something to behold though because this season has faced every challenge that a show could possibly face and has met them with more or less flying colors. Oh this is going to be quite the review of my thoughts. That Opening- Man this is probably the poorest aging thought I've ever had for one of these and I think this is intentional...but I think this is the first time this show has just felt so comfortable with its cast. Eight episodes of build up and trying to find a balance between all these characters and make sure they get enough development but it finally looks like it could start to be paying off here because this crew felt so comfortable with one another. The scene while they were having the briefing while La'an was eating and Spock was cleaning dishes...perfection. Just perfection. And two of my three favorite SF Captains are master chefs. But in an episode which seemed to go out of its way by showing what the status quo is...well we'll get there. Pike- gush, gush gush. Oh Anson Mount's portryal of the character is just so genuine. The joy he expressed at the promotion of some mere Ensign was brief but it was palpable. I have said it before and I will say it again. Pike and his single minded embracing of life is such a breath of fresh air...and I think exactly what we need. The Gorn- So it does make a lot of sense in some ways that the Gorn would be the principle antagonists of the show since we A. know so little about them but B. know they were active right around this time. I would have preferred the Tholians but that is just me. Not sure I approve of everything they are doing but this gives them that wonderful two step with cannon that they are doing because they can easily get away with bending canon with the Gorn and well more suggestion that there is something boiling behind the scenes with them. It is an interesting thought though there was obvious Alien parralels in this story but also...Magog. Andromeda's principle antagonist. Just that whole scene where they ate their way out of that one creature from the inside out...yiiikkkeees. I think what bothers me the most though is the whole idea of the 'permissable' targets. Now I know I commented on La'an's racism in the last time we faced the Gorn and how Pike ran with it and incorporated it and in some levels it still made sense here that she has a definite bone to grind with the Gorn...but still as an individualist it does not sit right with me entirely either. You have an extremly intelligent sentient species...who are being treated like animals...so like B+ here . On the other hand the CGI was out of this world. Given the last time we saw them in Enterprise and how the CGI there almost looked worse then the rubber suits from TOS this was a big problem and something I was a bit nervous about...but my goodness the vfx department crushed it. La'an- Her speech and subsequent perhaps adventuring around with Orianna was great. Terrific character again, gush, gush. Her yelling at the Gorn later on crossed the line into maybe hammy just a tad but again Pike trusts her judgement. George Samuel Kirk- It was a bit weird that this was the exact same complaint basically and we already saw this argument play out...well probably a few times in TOS...but most noticably in the Gallileo 7...where Spock does not feel. And except this time Pike did quash the racism and then expertly redirected his crew...but it still worked here. Guy is conflict adverse (great callback honestly) and is clearly out of his depth so he kind of loses it. Going to be interesting. Hemmer...MVP: So yeah I was literally just thinking after such a great episode that this felt a bit weird and abrupt. We lost two Red Shirts at this point and they were feeling like they weren't going to get a mention and just a typical Star Trek ending where...oh the Hammer just dropped. What an ending. I kind of had a sort of nebulous thought about this show where they are trying to do their own thing. Obviously this show is the latest in a large and long running franchise so there is set up and they cannot ignore that, but on the other hand the writing is kind of acting like it does not have that much connection...I am explaining this SO HORRIBLY but everything in this show is being told through the lens of well this is a brand new show. Even the Pike reveal is being treated as something that this Pike knows in its future events...and I think, while horrible job explaining it aside, Hemmer's death really drives this home because I was thinking 'oh gee a lot of these character's on the planet are main characters so they won't die...oh we got two characters who were introduced this episode oh they will die.' Sure Star Trek has had the Red Shirt thing going for a long time so there is that but even other shows often have a difficult time killing characters putting characters in danger and raising the steaks. But Hemmer died. A main character. So without any context to previous Trek this shows that THIS show is prepared to take risks, prepared to actually pay off tension. This show I think is going to feel a lot more dangerous moving forward. Because while we know Pike, Uhurha's, and M'Benga's fate, this decision signals anyone else could be fair game. What a wonderful move...though we saw way to little of Hemmer. But it is a testement to Bruce Horak that despite Hemmer's brief screentime he was charming, charasmatic, and left a powerful mark on the show. Hemmer...we hardly knew ye, but you will be missed. Spock/ Chapel: So Spock actually loses control and then is seen struggling to restablish that control. He taps into the dark side and then just loses it. So yeah, this is really cool and a taste of why Vulcan's feel like they have to be in control at all times. But the moment between him and Chapel at the end was just so touching and beautiful. It might be so easy to 'ship' them moving forward. And kudos to Ethan Peck for actually making this work. Ha, oh this ep was terrific. Also shades of what they could do to pay off their Sybock bombshell here but then the preview for next week's indicates that is not what will happen... Changing of the Status Quo- So another really brilliant bit of this ep and really this show is taking a lot of surface level nods from SEAL Team, my other favorite CBS property, but this ep left off on a lot of uncertainty. As I said the opening really established just how awesome this crew could be together and that this crew pound for pound could stand with Trek's best...but even then they left the seeds of what was to come. So yeah. Uhurha is leaving, beautiful shot of her staring at the comms console later...or maybe it was science ...but great shot. Spock is in an emotionally compromised state which he will have to deal with. Hemmer is dead. La'an is leaving for who knows how long. Now yes this could go back to 'normal' for the start of season 2, Uhura could be back an Ensign and La'an could be back at her post...but I don't think so. And as I sad in my thoughts on Halo this show is now clearly setting up a season 2 arc. They know they have room to play so they are going to play. Unless Sybock makes a surprise appearance next week... Retroactive complaint-Cadet Chia- her death- So obviously the emotional weight of this episode was Hemmer's death and obviously Chia's death had its own horror to it given how fast and sudden it was...but this was a character we did not care about...which is curious because of her backstory. She was a cadet on her training cruise...so where the hell was she? She could have been such a great spring board and nuance for Cadet Uhurha because while we didn't get a lot of her in this ep it could easily be immagined that she would have been someone who WANTED to be in Starfleet. Just imagine if they actually added a few scenes between the two throughout the season, like Hemmer and Uhura, but just like 'oh those Gorn were scary when they attacked the ship I don't know.' and Chia was like 'the risks are worth the exploration'. Obviously this would have risked diluting Hemmer's arc and his relationship with Uhurha which was so vita to his character but it could have left her feeling like more then a red shirt...red shirt plus for instance. The Sombra Class...built with Constitution parts- So yeah this felt super weak to me. Yes ultimatley a very nitpicky 'down' for me but with how amazing this show is for its production values and writing it just felt super weird that they would go to this particular well from the Original Series like this. They couldn't have changed the bridge up a little? The sick back? These were all the exact same sets from the Enterprise no effort to make them look different...just damaged. Though yes seeing it all bent to hell in the end of the ep was cool. But come on either call it a Constitution or make more of an effort here. Still a great episode and ultimate of nitpicks but it was noticable. As far as next week's...ooh boy.

Really SNW, really now? They killed my favorite character! Dam, that was a hard blow. Still, kudos for the balls to do it. Otherwise, it was a decent episode. The thriller/horror worked well for me, even if it I have to subtract some points for the lack of originality in the portrayal of the monsters. Really liked the scenes in the beginning. You can definitely tell that this crew has a lot of chemistry. After only 8 episodes, they already feel like a family, IMO way more than Discovery's ever did even after 4 seasons. Not sure how to interpret that las scene with Uhura and the comms console. Is she staying after all or leaving ... or leaving for just a little while? Guess we'll find out next week. With all the changes that are happeneing, you can tell thhey are getting ready for the grand finale. Looking forward to next week!

Is there any word about a second season of SNW? They just finished shooting it. Which raises a question: With Hemmer gone are they now going to bring in Scotty? Also, will there be a M'Benga/McCoy tag team in the future? Much as I loved Sulu, I really do not want to see Ortegas go

characters new and old Oretga and Laan have been refreshing character additions and I feel like alltough not technically, but kinda also Nurse Chapel and Dr. Mbenga too. While I love Karl Urban's Bones version (he's on my all time favorite Trek actor/character combo list easily) I feel a new Bones now would take a lot of shine away from Nurse Chapel and Dr. Mbenga. I don't know their story arcs past or present tough. Sulu could replace the "other" seat next to Oregas I guess. I really hope it's not just "60 years ago we decided, thus the characters end up like this and that predetermined". Would make Laan, Ortegas dispensable "redshirts" since they never were mentioned prior.

So the current discussion gives me more to discuss then what I was almost wanting to discuss but I have been musing a few things since 1.9 aired and well this gives me even more thoughts. The Current conversationSo yeah Hemmer's opening in the ship gives them an opprotunity to introduce...or re introduce...a new character. And a lot of people out on the net seem to be thinking we will get Montgommery Scott in season 2 which could make a lot of sense depending on what happens in the season finale as well. I am not sure how much I would be in favor of Scott returning and becoming the NCC 1701s CE in season 2...I kinda would rather a new character...however given how much sScott loved the Enterprise and how familiar he was with the ship he would make a lot more sense to be there then say M'Benga...
As far as Sulu and McCoy are concerned. No I don't want either one to be there, again given Scott's familiarity with the ship I can see that as justification but McCoy...despite me thinking that M'Benga being M'Benga has been kind of useless...would be a not needed replacement especially right now. Maybe he can be introduced as being a friend of Kirk and that is how he...*cough*...supplanted M'Benga as Enterprise's CMO. And Sulu there is no need for it. Even though she has gotten no attention I love Mellissa Navi I love Ortegas give us more of that and I think Sulu, at first anyways, was kind of an off again on again character to begin with...so nope...not going to happen.
Kirk- Is the big guerilla in the room. Since my fan theory is looking to be more wrong then anything just going to go ahead and say it...I don't think Kirk will be replacing Una as Pike's Number 1 in season 2...unless it happens in season 2...thank God for that. But this does bring up an interesting question of what is his role going to be in season 2? Because well not going to go into too many of my thoughts for next week's but I think Pike could easily end up with foreknowledge that Kirk is going to get command of the Enterprise one day. Which means whatever his role in season 2 could lead to Pike having this nugget over his head and maybe...mentoring him a bit? Encouraging him to push through a problem? Or they could obey the *strict interpretation of cannon* and not do anything and they will deliberarly not meet maybe to again preserve that timeline. Bottom line though at this point I think for season 2 we'll get him only for an episode or 2 and then maybe he will be recurring throughout the rest of the series. Permissable Targets in Star Trek So season 1 episode 9 kind of went a bit extreme in how it portrayed the Gorn. At least in the sense of mindless killing machines...now they were kids...oh my god they were kids!
As I brought up in my review for the episode this smacks of the idea in fiction, which I believed was coined by Lorerunner though the concept is pretty much in a lot of science fiction or fantasy or military fiction...the idea of the permissable targets. Most heroes in fiction tend to have a weird no kill policy under all circumstances, for instance, but the alien invasion, the robots, the death eaters, are all things that you can kill with impunity. Which then makes it even funnier when the heroes have this big speech about killing the Big Bad behind these organizations on how horrible killing is...so permissable targets.
Thing is Trek in its 50+ years has done a pretty good job of avoiding this trope throughout most of its main antagonists. Like the Romulans and Klingons were both introduced with some nobility and nuance to them. In Errand of Mercy the Organians were introduced as being kind of prickish and they stopped them...though still not permissable targets...and Kor even had loads of respect for Kor...and in Balance of Terror Kirk had loads of respect for the Romulan Commander. Even later on races like the Jem'hadar followed suit...and the Xindi. Only twice I can think of that Trek has violated the rule with the Borg (sort of) and the Sphere Builders.
So now we have the Gorn... and I guess there is nothing wrong with the concept of the Permissable Target BUT its something Trek has always done a good job of avoiding in the past so this comes off a bit off putting. The weird justification for this is the idea that the Gorn here are...again kids...which has its own eyebrow raising moments in itself but the point here these are kids so there are immature and so maybe you can reason with a mature Gorn. Though La'an doesen't seem to think so. All of this is to say that this is frickin odd for Trek. And Enterprise. Season 3. The MACOs. Closest Trek has come to bad ass special forces in the series and one of my favorite things thats gotten introduced to Trek. Starfleet has this weird military on again off again thing but the MACOs were really something that the Federation should have kept...but naturally pace organization so naturally they absorbed the MACOs into Starfleet. But I think this is the kind of thing I would kill for in a Section 31 show because...these missions that happen behind the scenes. Black Ops. Protecting the Federation. Ensuring that their rosey Utopia is safe and secure because it makes a lot of sense...and gives a lot of room for races to show up regularly that wouldn't have been mainstays at this time.

So that was certainly a season finale...and a very difficult episode to watch. I think in a weird way this is one of those instances of sort of dreading the worse will happen in this episode and your negative fan theories will happen and just waiting for those shoes to drop...and then of course coupled with how you do genuinely love the hell out of some of these characters that it is difficult to see them mess up. And there was a lot of that going on trying to watch it getting used to things and going 'aha that is poor writing...oh no because of that that makes sense.' Definitley like Spock Amock probably requires another rewatch to properly sort through everything, but here we go. Pike- So yeah the first of the big begruging bits here and a kind of weird moment. Now I will say there is at least one disconnect here because again last week and the Gorn episode...permissable targets. I know that this works in some way but Pike has been shown to go off and break the rules, take risks, and be willing to excercise extreme sanction to protect the Federation and be a cowboy...see the premiere, both gorn episodes, and to a lesser extent the one with the crazy planet with the child sucking machine. Other then this sort of hemming and hawing niggle the rest of this works quite well. The episode is called A Quality of Mercy and in this case the quality of mercy is that Pike and the Federation are willing to negotiate and go through things to make sure life is preserved and peace is given a chance...and because of that and in some ways the other aspects of the character that I love, its not a character flaw, but then Pike ended up being the wrong person at the wrong time. And because of that Pike blinked. twice. Which I just realized this very same plot point was brought up in the Battle of the Binaries, but works much better here.
Paul Wesley- So the more I think about his performance here the more I like it but my initial response was...that is not Kirk. But I kind of realize that he actually did do a pretty good job with the Kirk mannerisms and the writers did a good job showcasing Kirk's character traits as established in the Original Series, but probbaly best to discuss that later.
Ortegas- Biggest 'down' of the episode. I think maybe a bit of the disconnect here with this ep is I came in expecting this to be a direct riff of BoT...but then it quickly didn't come to be that. Which is not a bad thing and I quite approve and think it will be one thing which will improve on rewatch...but then it was super off putting that they then lifted Stiles out of the episode and put him in Ortegas's body. Ortegas is kind, compassionate, ameniable, funny, and she knows Spock. Stiles was a never before seen, and never seen after, navigator on the Enterprise with an axe to grind. It was such a pointless omage because they didn't do anything to explain it and give Ortegas the reason why to be the belligerent in this case. Also the Ortegas stand down bit also came off that way to but also does show just how much stress Pike is under because that is OOC.
Pike and Kirk- They made a hell of a team. I really like it how they were able to really complement each other for the most part and Pike still followed Kirk's advice on a few occassions...despite his misgivings. This was especially true where Kirk's bluffing nature was concerned...which Pike kind of followed.
Uhurha...what the hell are you doing there?- So in the preview it was very noticable how Uhurha was on the bridge despite leaving last ep. Well quickly figured out the angle of the episode and then ok that is why she is there...but then she is at the comm station in the final scene of the episode. Da hell?
Spock's Fate/ The Forever War- So I can't help but just really applaud them for what they did here. Granted cliche as hell but I think it is a point that time will correct in sometimes horrible ways. In this case Spock takes Pike's place, essentially, with pretty much his exact injuries as well. Plus I do half wonder if Chapel and he were closer in this timeline, she did look positively devestated. And I couldn't help but notice that future Pike was wearing the movie uniform. Now hard to remember the exact timeline but this is what? good ten-fifteen years after Balance of Terror? Something like that? Anyways quite worth pointing out. And I did see it coming that Pike wouldn't have been able to fire on the Romulan ship which they would've taken as the final sign of weakness. And they did.
The Ending and taste of things to come- So just when I dismissed my theory as never happening, thank God, it actually happened...not thank God. Which first off is a crying shame since Una has probably been the least developed character in the series so far so if this is the last we see of her or close to the last this is going to be a crying shame. Because the future makes it pretty clear that she stays in jail. And well this episode makes it clear that at least in this case this future is pretty set in stone. Thing is from there more questions are raised then not raised. Afterall my comment that Kirk would then be the Xo seems kind of off base given the file Pike was studying just before all this broke down so...don't know where this would go. And given the current fan theories about Hemmer's replacement it was interesting that they bothered to get a voice for Scotty in there. May not mean anything but I do really look forward to season 2 because there is a LOT to address and a lot of character movement which could still happen.

the episode 10 season 1 finale wasn't bad - it's still my least favorite episode so far though - I just dislike the Kirk crutch as much as the Skywalker one. It also meant a lot less screen time for the regular cast, with the focus on Kirk and Pike - and that's why I kinda dread the show's future now. Is Kirk becoming a regular... Not a fan of the time crystals at all, it's also a Discovery relict I'd rater have done without. Liked the the Romulan part of the story however

Wow, what a finale. I really want to go back and watch Balance of Terror again after this one. It's certainly been a while and it would be good to remind myself of some details. All in all though, I think the alternative scenario was ... interesting. I do think they are overdoing it a bit with the TOS interlinking at this point and I would much appreciate it if they dialed it down again for season 2. I feel SNW was at its best when it did it's own thing more than trying to riff too much on TOS. That said, I think this resolution for Pike's issues with having seen his future is very good. I was wondering how they'd deal with it because logically he'd have a lot of opportunities to get around it (just refusing promotion to Admiral for example and many more actually because he did know the names of those others involved in the accident). Now he does have a valid and understandable reason for not interfering with his "fate" or even embracing it as tough as that is. I also liked the scene with Spock at the end, where we get another confirmation of Spocks loyalty for Pike, nicely explaining his actions in The Menagerie. The new interpretation of Kirk was ... ok. I wasn't quite as impressed as I was by Chris Pine back in the 2009 movie but especially because Kirk has already been recast before now, it was fine. From what i hear he will be back in season 2. I stand by my statement that I'd rather have SNW do it's own thing, so I hope it'll just be a couple of cameos or something like that. Hearing Scotty in what I think was a pretty direct recreation of one of the Balance of Terror scenes in the Jefferies tube was really cool though, I did like that one. So all in all, a good finale in my book and an excellent season overall. Dare I say, I hold by what I said before. This series is the best Trek since DS9 as far as I am concerned. It also goes to show how refreshing the "out of date" episodic story telling is and how well it can work even for streaming. It allowed them to do something really different and fresh every week, even change genres quite a bit. It fits the Trek formula so much better than the serialized seasons. Don't get me wrong, the serialized stuff was fun for a while but I would think that e.g. Discovery could profit a lot from having an episodic season for a change. maybe it would finally put a stop to the "danger creep" that series suffered from a lot and allow the characters to finally relax a bit for fcks sake. Anyway, spectacular season, consider me massively impressed. I give it a warpfactor of 9.9/10. Hit it for season 2!

The season is over. So I guess two new crewmembers next season. I wonder if they are going to swap crewmembers to fit all the TOS crew in there as the seasons move along. Well two of them will stick around I guess. I'm going to miss La'an and Ortegas once it his their turn.

Does TOS have a chief of security? Every other series had one but I don't remember there being one on Kirk's Enterprise. Maybe La'an is still around and we just don't see her during episodes?

Does TOS have a chief of security? Every other series had one but I don't remember there being one on Kirk's Enterprise. Maybe La'an is still around and we just don't see her during episodes? Here is a helpful article on the subject. The answer is kind of complicated. The first one mentioned is Giotti in season one. It's Freeman in season two. But it's also either Sulu or Chekhov, depending.

What the heck? I could have seen a crossover within the animated series but a live action crossover within SNW? How in the world is that supposed to work?
Ah well, SNW and Lower Decks have been by far the two highlights of New Trek so far, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt at this point. Sounds weird though.
About the trailer: It was a little fast to really catch a lot of stuff in just one viewing but
the DS9 intro mockery with the "fly in cricles and act like you are in awe of the pylons" already had me laughing hysterically.

SNW showed in season one that they can successfully pull of a different "style" of the week, from humor/comedy/fantasy to action/horror etc. There's plenty of ways to do it > transporter malfunction, holodeck shenanigans, time travel, alternate universes, other phenomena.
Remember when the Orville went 2D for a bit? or how in Dr. Strange Multiverse they traveled/fell trough an animated universe?
I'm crossing my fingers for Mariner & Boimler live action, not Roger Rabit semi or fully animated SNW crossover though.
As for the "continue cruising in awe DS9 Pylons" - it had me in stiches, still does writing about it. Can't wait for season 3.

Lower Decks Season 3 Episode 1 - Short Review: Loved it!!! They are starting back up just as brilliantly as they ended season 2. Some (by far not all) highlights: By far the best thing about this episode was how they stick with the whole premise of Lower Decks. These are not the stories of the big heroes who get to have the awesome season cliffhanger two-parter episode. Those stories are reserved for the bridge crew and the fact that the entire "A-plot" is just happening off screen while out Lower Deckers are running around doing stupid useless stuff was brilliant. - The Bozeman, Montana amusement park and everything related to it had me grinning all the way. I love First Contact, definitely up there as one of the best ST movies and this was such a beautiful reference to it, with James Cromwell, the iconic music and all. Fantastic! And I mean, come on, the T'Plana Hath is a kid's slide now? It made so much sense that I was actually laughing out loud at seeing this. - The fact that Sisko's was just there without any further mention or reference made by any of the characters. They just happened to meet in that restaurant (alligator and all) and that was it. Really looking forward to the rest of the season!

Lower Decks S3.E2: The climbing wall had me in stitches: "You got to be kidding me! Stupid society built on exercise and wellness!" Also, "The bartender rips your arm off and kills you with it. It is not an honorable death since, technically, you have died by your own hand." is probably one of the best klingon lines I have ever heard.

Very relieved to not see young Scotty in the role. While it might make sense I think keeping the Legacy Characters to just Kirk is probably for the best beyond cameos.

Phew, I had the stream running in the background while doing other stuff. This was very cringe though. Tawny did a great job with the material (really like her) but this was just badly done.
I am only talking about the live show though. The trailers were alright.

I watched it time delayed, so I could fast forward what doesn't interest me Expect sports and a select few live streams - I don't watch stuff any other way now. production value of the "live" segment was indeed quite cringe and amateur-hour (weird beebopper, mic's on too early/still open when not on stage, wrong camera) If I didn't like Tawny's improv/straight talking style so much - I'd just have watched the trailers only

This weeks Lower Decks episode has been amazing! Mike and Co delivered an absolute love letter to DS9 ! 10 out of 10 for that alone the Pylons cruising, wormhole, Promenade, Quark's Bar, Morn!, Ops Center, Sisko's Baseball, Daboo, Kira, Quark and many things more - SO AWESOME ! Lower Decks wise alone they 2 primary lowerdeckers stories were good as well - Boimler DS9 Daboo King and Jennifer's friends having a crush on him
- Loved how Jennifer told Mariner to be Mariner and the STUNNING resolution (pun absolutely intended) was just hilariously awesome (stunning Jennifer's friends wasn't on my bingo card, then stunning themselves together )
- also lol Mariner knowing and having Quark's secret holo program
