SNW S2E4: - I really liked the premise. The loosing of memories was a pretty messed up situation to be in. That was done well. - Pikes story was a good one, how the plot on the planet entangled with his personal life, that was well done. - I still feel bad for Ortegas in a way. This is the closest we've seen to her being in the center of an episode and still, she doesn't get to go on the mission, she even gets ordered to bring Uhura to sickbay like a yeoman or something. I mean, I know that Una used to fly the ship like during The Cage but still, it felt very demeaning. And when she actually pulls off something cool she's kinda not even herself at the time (I guess that actually makes kinda more heroic but still). I don't know, I hope this wasn't it now with her for the season. I mean, I realize, getting something great for the pilot to do for a ship that's actually more of a cruiser is hard (it's why the rotating ensigns after Wesley's departure on TNG worked pretty well IMO) but I hope they can think of something more this season, maybe have her come up with some life saving maneuver in the inevitable next battle with the Gorn or something. - Two weird little instances: 1. So, when Spock calls sickbay and Chapel answers with this awkward "Hi Spock", it was a nice reminder of their thing but you'd hope she can be a little bit professional. 2. My big disappointment in this episode though was La'an. When she had the first blackout and lost six hours after the shuttle landing, why in the hell wouldn't she report it? Pike and M'Benga specifically asked her twice and she basically lied to them. Why? There was no reason for this and it doesn't fit her character at all. But yeah, those were just my two little nitpicks there. Overall it was a solid episode. EDIT: Watched Trek Culture's Ups & Downs, a few comments on that: Good point abut the uniforms of the dead crewmen being wrong, I totally missed it but somebody messed up there. I do think they should have worn The Cage uniforms, not Discovery's but yeah, good point there. Also, they have a good point about the issue that this didn't really take advantage of the fact that this was Rigel 7 and that there was a crew member left behind and contaminated a culture. They are right to make this a down. That premise alone would have carried an episode and they kinda wasted it by focusing on a different plot altogether. I did like that they brought up the same point as I about this better not being the Ortegas episode they were hyping up. I think they might be right that this could very well be a bait and switch though. After all, they way they set it up with her getting all ready for the mission and then not being allowed to go after all felt very much like an in-joke for the audience. Also - a bit meta here - they had Anson Mount in the Ready Room this week, surely for the Ortegas episode, they'd have had Melissa Navia there. So let's wait and see. However, I do think they were a bit harsh on the episode all in all. I did like that it felt like a classic TOS episode in a way. Not too complicated, a little old-school, I liked that and I am happy that they throw these in there.

That made we wonder a bit as well. They could've framed it better.
Just gonna chalk it up the memory loss and disorientation. Forgetting why she was concerned in the first place, then forgetting why they're concerned next. Defaulting to, "I don't want to stall the mission for a headache" tough-girl routine.

She seems to remember everything else about the mission and the other two just fine at this point. Ah well, I guess we all have our brain fart moments sometimes, don't we.

SNW S2E4 What are your guyses thoughts on Pike/Batel's relationship?
I'm biased, I liked Melanie Scrofano in her last campy show, so I rather like the relationship. (I'm curious how it ends personally.)

Season 2 Episode 4 Among the Lotus Eaters. This episode continues this series's trend of being really uncomfortable to watch in some ways but also manages to be really good teleivion. Each episode tends to have its own reasons and theories as to why, though the various bits of 'waiting for the other shoe to drop' rather then just having fun with the episode or waiting for each episode to get too preachy only for it to not (though see my thoughts on last week's episode on my opinion for that). But it continues the tradition of A Quality of Mercy, Ad Astera A Porta (ugh I probably spelled that wrong but onward!) And last weeks episode Tommorow and Tommorow and Tommororow. But in this case this one was because it dealt with some genuininely interesting but heavvvyy subject matter. And much like a lot of the other previous episodes I feel like it could very much improve on a rewatch which will make it hard to do a ranking...if I am silly enough to do it. But spoilers: / Still not sure if this is the proper way to do a 'neutral' point but I did think it was a 'huh interesting' moment name dropping Pasalk and that he punished Batel for not successfully prosecuting Una which also meant she was unsuccessful in prosecuting Pike which does reinforce my fan theory...which does bring me to the first win. + Fucking Vulcans. I do rather love how much Trek sort of portrays Vulcan logic as a two handed vice. On the one hand yes you have great characters like TUvok and Spock or Sarek but on the other Vulcans really tend to view their logic as a source of arrogance and pride and this is coming out with Pasalk in spades. + Batel and Pike's relationship. So over the course of this episode I thought they were going to stay broken up because of things which would make for interesting drama later in the season because we seem to have seen a Gorn attack ship descending on Batel's position so...drama...tension. But obviously they ended up going in a different direction. And this relationship is not the best portrayed honestly and is a little bit...well not getting enough screen time of it for them to really gel for me. However this scene is the FIRST time where Pike knowing his fate has really come up this season. Not overtly they are avoiding that as promised but it had to have been in the back of his head. + Another Prime Directive Episode. Man for a concept I am uncomfortable with and given how Star Trek usually does these things I continue to love how Strange New Worlds deals with this concept. This time you have something that is a bit of a rarity for Trek not deciding whether or not to violate the Prime Directive, or stopping someone from continuing to violate the Prime Directive, but in this case reversing and 'fixing the mess' already. Of course this too didn't become the primary focus of the episode but its a neat reminder because much like for SG-1 the early years or Friendship One or the final episode of the Orville while I dispute some of the specifics of the Prime Directive there is also a reason you shouldn't just blunder in either. -I might be reading too much into this...or not enough...but it seems weird that Zac was able to get so many phaser rifles for the guards and recreate the tech of Starfleet. At least this is my impression because I did think about whether or not that equipment was left behind but if the crew of the Enterprise left that much equipment behind then they would've known there was a Prime Directive violation and gone back for it...I think anyways. So means they had to be home grown but that means you need a highly industrialized base in order to build ANY advanced technology. You can't just build a modern gun or a factory you need to build all the tech and industry to build the machines. -Kind of a down but much like last week I do wonder if they were playing the lines fast and lose with the types of memories being affected and not affected by the radiation not a huge deal but there was some hmm moments but probably ended up serving the themes better to. +The crew figuring out who they are. Again this does tie into the biology versus theme aspect that I mentioned above but it was kind of interesting how the ground team figured out how they were using information at their disposal and trying to think of what they were. Meanwhile in space they did largely the same thing with the pads...though this is where the theme does smack into itself because its low key horryfying what was happening up there because Starships need crews, not just to fly the ship, but to monitor anti matter containment, try and heal people. Seeing Chapel not even having the slightest recognition for Ortegas, again given the above kind of negative point was both really disconcerting and kind of odd given that you'd think you would intuitively recognize your friend like they did on the planet. Hmm. + Emotion>Logic. Another one of those small things that happened and another thing that I do complain about with both early Trek and early Star Wars is the lack of human emotions. Yes, the key is of course to not be consumed or overbalanced by them but it seems both the Jedi and the Vulcans do go too far in this concept which kind of causes problems for the Jedi but given how both groups are treated by the writers I do wonder if metatextually that Lucas or Rodenberry never really liked emotions too much. So its nice to see that they draw multiple times in this episode as emotions being a gateway to the memories they have lost and Spock's 'Emotions are not fact' which was then shouted down by Ortegas and being one of the solutions of the episode. +I am Erica Ortegas. I fly the ship. More on this for theme but this was a bit of a joy to watch her joy come out as she reconnects with herself and repeats the mantra to herself. Again bit confused on the specifics since flying a ship would be equated to surgery but...neat flying...neat sequence. +Implied combat skills. The final showdown with Zac and crew was intense but also very interesting from a character perspective. First we get more justification retroactively for M'Benga and what he was able to do in episode 1 although still feels a little off but now it is very clear they are building to something and while its not been the best this also counts as them doing something interesting with the character so bravo. But second Pike also was able to go all 'super soldier' very quickly, knowing how to use a phaser rifle, using that dish as a shield being a very nice touch. Given the tension in a few episodes we've seen of Pike the warrior vs. Pike the diplomat its kind of an interesting implication that his combat skills were so finely tuned that he remembered them so quickly. + The final stand for Zac. This was the moment that this episodes discomfort reached the height for me. As I have written its not the first time it came up but man seeing Pike so close to just gunning Zac down in such a rage given would've been a very interesting choice for his character given how much I've commented and complemented on just how much of a defender of life he is. At first I found it convenient and a little cheap on how his memories chose that moment to come back though so he didn't betray himself BUT I realized in writing this review that emotion was the gateway to these memories and thuuuss why he remembered it was specifically because of the strong emotions. Well played. +The theme/ the message. So this episode does a lot and covers a lot of ground. It is a Prime Directive episode...but not quite. Its a 'crew looses their memory and is put to work' like that one SG-1 episode or Voyager's Workforce...but not really. Instead this episode dealt basically with emotion, connection (huh there's that term again) and identity. The start of the episode had Pike and Ortegas give logs and do scenes where they were starting to become uncomfortable with the slog of their lives or worried about some fact that was threatening them, but in short, because of the emotion connection to those things they were able to come back to themselves and save the day, in this case Pike's relationship with Batel and Ortegas realzing how cool it is that she flies the ship. I mean I'd love that job honestly. And thus they can now recommit themselves to those tasks. Which is what makes this episode a bit hard to again place in context with the others because it almost covers TOO much philosophical ground, although to note if they just made this a 'Workforce' clone then it would've been a Workforce clone. Which is my way of saying this is a really great well rounded episode which similultaneously ends up being a great Prime Directive Episode and a great workforce episode because those elements were in there but also not really because they weren't the main focus either. +Speaking of though the solution to the problem...Pike that is a Prime Directive Violation as we have seen a few times in Trek. A rock crashing into a planet has been considered natural evolution. But I don't care because it was neat and it lets the planet now evolve in peace. So yeah, great episode.

Episode 5: Yet another episode where they play the "vulcan condition" for laughs. There were some funny moments but they also often played it over the top IMO (like the charades thing for example). Ethan Peck does a good job as a human, playing a vulcan who becomes a human and than has to act like a vulcan. He brought in a lot of little nuances that really worked. Also, Jess Bush is a very likable actress and made the Chapel part of the plot work.
All in all though, I thought humor was hit and miss and the episode didn't have that much else to stand on, so I'd say it was probably the weakes epsiode in the season so far. I am also not sure how to feel about Chapel and Spock being together now. I mean, they basically threw out the old TOS Chapel very early on when they made this new one, so the canon break was already there but still, I feel this episode very blatantly changes things around for the two characters, of which I am not a huge fan. So eah, not the best episode.

And yeah, no shade on Peck, Mount or any of the actors by any means, they did a great job (as I wrote as well). My favorite little tidbit in the episode was when: at the end, when T'Prell's husband (best character anyway) is asking for more food and Pike just snaps his fingers and gives him this "yea, I gotcha" gesture. It's fantastic in how understated it is but shows the rapport those two have already built.

Thoughts on last week's SNWs (yeah I know I'm super late to this party sorry!): Definitley the best of the more humorous episodes that they have done so far and honestly probably my second favorite of the season given that other then episode 2 each one of these episodes have been really good but has also had one or two really big problems to. But yeah especially when I saw the subject matter of what it was dealing with and the tone in the trailers with Spock being human and the associated hijinks I was thinking...wait...do they really have to do this again? Given that the last time they did this last season it was probably my weakest episode last season. But Ethan Peck is hillarious and really buying the relationship/ chemistry between Peck/ Bush Chapel/ Spock...almost against my will. And this episode was a hoot almost from beginning to the end, that still managed to convery some heartfelt philosophy at the very end. Only thing that bugged me: The whole bit when they were in the other dimension and Uhurha was like 'Christine! Tell them! You like Spock!' Felt very high school faux drama and a bit forced, I think there are more...uh mature ways...to say that. But then what do I know I think writing romance might be one of my weaknesses to so *shrugs* Overall this season has been great and somehow managed to one up season 1, so far at least, season 1 did have a few clunkers and a few big head scratches but even though each episode has had its problems each one of the episodes have been realllly strong to me. Not getting enough of my boy Pike but what we have has been pretty gold.

I'm nearing the end of an ENT rewatch. Been a long road, getting from season one to here. Phlox carries the first two seasons, Combs' Shran is as wonderful as I remember. Not only acted well but written with some great care to keep him on the fence.
Got a surprise when I saw a dipshit from PicS3 (light cast spoiler) show up outta nowhere. Apparently he's a dipshit from Romulus instead of Chicago this time.

I can kinda appreciate it on that level.

SNW S2ep6 I liked it but I had the premise down quick. Don't imagine I'm alone in that, seemed a bit of a simple concept this ep. SNW Related DIS S4 BIG Spoiler ↓ Basically a reverse season 4 plot in its entirety. We're the 10C and the deuterium aliens are us. Guess that makes Nyota a complex language chemical?
Kirk again! Not complaining but I wouldn't mind some more Pike myself now too. Seeing Hemmer was good times, he is missed. "ABRA CADABRA!" clickFriction with Pelia was interesting, between her and Uhura, and #1. Una having to back up her shit was nice. Something tells me Pelia could be higher ranked if she had a desire to do so though. Una resorting to rank was good characterization. Pelia kinda tees it up and Una falls right in, that's when Pelia says she'll fix the station leaves. It seems like Una got the last dig in there but she did it by resorting to a known character-flaw Pelia was indirectly highlighting. The Federation is weakened in terms of the Gorn threat due to their actions this episode. I'm quite curious what they have planned for that long arc. I'm not sure about the drama between Sam and Kirk but it set up the final scene fairly well. The seed that starts the next iteration. PS: Dunno how many directors and crew sat there and said "ribbed-buttplug-shaped chess pieces are definitely going to add to this sassy romance-laden scene between Chapel and Spock" but I disagree.

SNW season 2 has been a joy so far. For some reason, it is already online for me (I have Paramount+ as an Amazon Prime Video channel in the US). I've just seen it. It' pretty much exactly what you'd expect, fun, quite absurd and with a few really nice gags. Mainly it's just a delight seeing Boimler and Mariner in live action for a change.
Not gonna say more because spoilers, just watch it people.

My spoiler free thoughts on the SNW LD Crossover "Those Old Scientists":
It's a love letter to Star Trek as a whole, the 2 series too, crafted in a way to progress the respective characters and arcs of each show and lots of emotions of all sorts (joy, sadness, laughter...).
awesome telented people infront and behind the camera, writting, directing and all of that.
It does not feel cheaply cobbled together fan service checklisty messy.
An instant all time favorite for me to rewatch many times in the future.

Fucking brilliant.
Cram packed with some very on-point humour and precision-targeted tropes. They blended the tones of humour well too, shifting from LD's spotlighting to SNW's wit without losing a beat.

When I first heard of the episode I was hoping for Roger Rabbit-esque inserts but this worked.

A guilty pleasure of mine you could say is watching 'The Dragon Prince'. (Stoned.)
They're walking around a market and one of the merchants casually yells, "Stembolts. Get yer stembolts here, all self-sealing."
Not the place I expected a DS9 reference to randomly pop outta nowhere.

A lot of really good gags, also sometimes "against" Lower Decks itself. "Why are they all talking so slowly?" - " Yeah and so quietly, too."
But one of my favorite scenes aside from all the humor was when they are in Pike's quarters and they have that discussion about his birthday and about living in the moment. That was one of those moments that Lower Decks does so well at times, when - nudged in between all the gags and the humor - they also manage to put in these little messages that are very Trek. Love it.

I never watched Lower Deck so I have no idea who those people are, but the cellshaded intro was amazing.

Did this set a record for 'ups'? Well, they gave every single gag in the episode an Up ... and as Sean would say, I am here for it.

By the way, quite a few trailers came out this weekend: SNW Episode 9: Now, I am not at all big on musicals, so I will probably have a hard time with this but hey, there wasn't a really bad episode in this season yet, so I'll be giving them the benefit of the doubt. It seems it'll be an SNW tradition that for episode 9 of a season, they just "take one off" and do whatever they want. Disco Season 5: Now, the trailer implies that they'll go on a treasure hunt in this season and I am all for it. Please don't make it yet another galactic catastrophe season. Disco needs to lighten up a bit, even if this is their final season. The trailer looks promising in that regard though. And finally, Lower Decks Season 4: The trailer alone is already complete easter-egg overload. Can't wait! It's gonna be fantastic yet again.

SNWs Season 2 Episode 6... A lower key episode then a lot of what we have been getting. Very conceptually sci fi 'moment of the week' type instead of any arc building or anything too grandiose...and for the most part it really worked. The mystery of the episode I basically solved probably in the first ten minutes overall but they did really good pulling me in at least where even though I did figure it out mostly was still enough wiggle room where I was like 'huh what is going on here'. Definitley shades of a lot of classic sci fi stuff in here specifically 'Devil in the Dark' and that one episode of Babylon 5 where Captain Sheridan picks up an interdimensional traveler hitch hiker. +The threat of the Gorn/ Their reason for being here. Straight off the bat I did really like this nod to continuity and the thing they have been building up to all season here. But mainly apparently it is not public knowledge. In the first like 3 episodes of the season it felt very hush hush and the Admiralty was trying to keep it on the down low and potential political BS happening with Una's case...but now they are openly discussing it on the Bridge. Interesting. And a nice dove tail to because Pike is like 'yey exploration!' which is true but its also nice to see some kind of real political reality going on in this episode. +Pike...love how he intereacts with the crew and loves how he interacts with Uhurha here again showing...yeah he's basically male Janeway. Just pappa bear who just makes sure his crew is fine by and large. -UNa's treatment of Pellia...got a little better when it was explained more on why but felt this was still a little OC for her. +The presentation of the mystery. As I said fairly easy to figure out but it is noteworthy to mention just how well they did in making everything feel creepy and claustrophobic almost. That tone that kept playing was delightfully awesome. -The security guard missing that open shot...when Ramon got away to wreak havoc. Now I know I may be too harsh on Starfleet again and that these things should happen 'because plot' and to make things tense and also to help continue to tease the mystery but once more Starfleet security procegures are laughable and that guard should've probably hit? SImilar to Vox I know. On the bright side I love how Kirk was all like 'emergency beam out' just bam, bam, done. -Uhurha's character issues when talking to Kirk. I know really weird down and again feels like a nit pick BUT this is a huge problem with episodic televion/ Star Trek in general and especially it seems this show. First off this show is kind of weird where the character writing is great but it feels really un even. You get central characters of the episode and then the rest of the ship gets nothing to do. To be fair I guess in this one you had a LOT of central characters considering it focussed on Kirk, Pike, Uhura, Una, and Pellia...but Ortegas had like one line in the entire episode. Which again very high level...but then what's worse is that Uhurha basically says she has been having trouble sleeping and having emotional problems since Hemmer's death...almost a year ago...and this is the first time we are hearing of this? Yes these things can stew but one of the biggest issues I've always had with Trek is the character problem of the week being so bad, relating to some trauma they've experienced in their last episode like seasons ago...we don't get any updates...and then it just is wrapped up in an episode. We could've had so many interesting lines from Uhurha or Pike before now and again the biggest sin of this kind of lack of storytelling is it does not take much JUST like one line here or there, Una and Pike could've been talking about a dip in performance, would've made all the difference...but nope this deep seeded psychological problem came out of nowhere. +Paul Wesley as Kirk/ Kirk beliving Uhura/ Kirk's speech to Uhura. So bit weird that Pike who is usually the emapathetic one didn't pick up on this more but I loved Paul Wesley here. And as I think some comment on FB I saw, a more human version and well rounded, and this is basically our first experience with him as the 'Prime' Kirk. And any doubt that he looks too weird or is slightly off in acting is gone because he really reminds me of a very young Kirk here. And his speech to Uhurha was just phemnonal about 'facing death'. So yeah huge fan of Paul Wesley's Kirk now. Kind of a shame I don't think we should get too much more of him in the future because A. Pike's show and B. unless they reboot TOS we know where this is going so... +We're Killing them! Uhurha hasn't gotten a lot to do this season in rhetrospect but Ceilia Rose Gooding nailed it this episode and this whole line and whole sequence was perfect for her. Also got a chuckle out of the "FIRE TORPEDOES" Bit. off to watch those Old scientists though I think I probably forgot something so I may come back to it for 2.6.
