Anthem, the future of gaming "as-a-service".
Here is a post I found in REDDIT from a SWBF2 gamer. He describes the "services" which poked me into asking "what about Anthem's?".
" (1) Uninspired weekly challenges. Killing enemies with each class...playing for a certain amount of time with each class. How long did it take to come up with that? What's next? Roll 500 times?
(2) Lazy, half-assed implementation of challenges: can't even be bothered to divide the challenges up by the conditions that are required. I guess we're supposed to take mental notes instead of the game keeping track of the challenge for us.
(3) Just straight up releasing incomplete work. Did you all see the reward crate where they just had the incorrect placeholder name of the crate? Unbelievably sloppy.
(4) Rewards of weekly challenges: more tone deafness of EA not actually listening to the gripes of the community. 25 crafting parts from 'Destroy Them' What the fuck can we do with 25 crafting parts? Add a 0 to that and then it would be worth it to do these inane challenges.
(5) No explanation or communication about events outlined on EA's events calender. Blast Sunday? Just needed to fill some space to bolster the 'Season'? That's a good way to not piss people off /s. ... " Now, I realise that MEAMP has / had weekly challenges but the rewards are pitiful as well. Ergo, I rarely go for them. So, if this is supposed to "bring me back to play again", well, it does not work for me. Which brings me to BF2.
If what the above SWBF2 gamer mentions is true then can we expect similar "service challenges" from Anthem?. Somehow I'm not inspired by this business model. How can these anemic "new challenges" keep the fans coming back? This guy is definitely bored.
🌸
Why are some people convinced that Anthem will share the same model with BF2? Nevermind that so far we don't know anything about Anthem being a PVP game, like Battlferont is - only that it's a co-op.

It always feel like an agenda when people are piecing together things to try and frame a game in a good or bad way this far out from launch with us knowing almost nothing about the game. The funny thing is I am pretty sure EA wins when people are complaining this much about something for it will drive people to buy the game out of curiosity and I believe that is what happened with Mass Effect 3 and all the complaining around its ending. The way I see it is that people on YouTube know its easy click money by constantly bashing EA and their products since the internet seems to love to hate EA while they don't spend nearly as much time on the garbage other publishers do. Shadow of War never really changed their lootbox system, but nobody talks about that anymore or how Steam handled their lootbox controversy wasn't covered that much either. Heck I think the Activision patent to "encourage" players to buy lootboxes was only news for a day and I bet people would be whining about EA for months if they did that. Its also why I don't think it was an EA decision to pull lootboxes for they don't believe the outrage anymore because people are so quick to grab the pitchforks and torches when it comes to them.

" ...I am pretty sure EA wins when people are complaining this much about something for it will drive people to buy the game out of curiosity..."- my ass. The simple reason you hear so much whining about EA and not the other stuff so much is that this is a forum about EA games and you keep visiting them.

As far as believing in the adage "there is no such thing as bad publicity" if that is an agenda I guess I am guilty of it, for I said the exact same thing about Shadow of War as well elsewhere and other controversial games/movies over the years including Alien: Colonial Marines which still sold over a million copies despite all the people posting videos about how bad that game was. I do visit more places then just forums dedicated to EA and EA games. There are plenty of places that will make a piece about how horrible what EA is doing or that the industry themselves is slamming EA for there are plenty of those posted linked in this very thread.

wanna be afraid of something?
Don't be afraid of Anthem mimicking SWBF2....be afraid of it mimicking DESTINY!
this is a Bioware game and I am insanely afraid it will have a token borderline story-less 7 hours campaign mode made just to prepare you to the never ending "shared world gameplay" nonsense which consists of "do your daily, your weekly and then keep on grinding them over and over again to watch your progression snail pace towards a meaningless number"
UGH!

I think the aim is for it to be both: to have both the 20-40 hours of story content Bioware usually provides alongside endgame activities to keep the looter fans reeled in. They have a substantial writing team on this project, lead by Drew Karpyshyn. So I’m not particularly worried about it lacking story. I am a bit worried about how much focus it will get relative to everything else and how it will be structured with the open world.

With BioWare's story-telling credentials from it's "A-team' in Edmonton. One thing I'm not worried about is a lack of story. It would seem bizarre to me if those writers that we know are there have been sitting on their hands.

I think going back for a few games even BioWare Edmonton has had a problem when they have been trying to allow a story to show different emotions and it started to muddle the story. My hope is that they use the writers they have in Edmonton and give them an avenue to tell a story better which probably means more linear to showcase those talents and I think it is something that is needed, but unfortunately anything they might have learned from Andromeda and how its story worked probably would be too late for Anthem since it would have to be something taken into consideration from the start of development.

Well, my understanding is that Andromeda’s story was rushed due to lack of clear ideas before they brought Mac Walters in 18 months before release. So I think the main learning from Andromeda is not to rush things.

Understandable, but try to remember that Bioware’s marketing campaigns are almost always targeted at people outside the core Bioware fan base. Every Bioware marketing campaign I’ve ever seen has leaned heavily on action rather than storytelling or character customization.

BioWare's marketing is usually:
Look how pretty, and 'boom!'... (and lots of running)
But we stay for the stories, don't we?

"Share the world" "go on adventures with friends" "persistent environments" and blah blah blah.
nothing about the single player campaign
not to mention that Bioware relies almost always on the "you are the special hero who will rise from next to nothingness to greatness and save us all" kinda model which you cannot do in a destiny-like game because you share the world with 3516851684161 other players and not everyone can be THE hero
see where I'm going with it?

That is BioWare's MO though. How many times did they mention Skryim or Witcher 3 over the years for other games.

nothing about the single player campaign You assume there is a 'single player campaign', I'm not convinced that's true. I'm expecting a story set in a game world where you can team up with small groups, or indeed not. I'm not convinced there will be a single-player/multiplayer dichotomy.

nothing about the single player campaign You assume there is a 'single player campaign', I'm not convinced that's true. I'm expecting a story set in a game world where you can team up with small groups, or indeed not. I'm not convinced there will be a single-player/multiplayer dichotomy. Even Destiny and Destiny 2 have a single player campaign, as lackluster as they are. I’d wager a lot that Anthem will have one. The question for me is how long it will be and what level of focus it will get.

BioWare's marketing is usually: Look how pretty, and 'boom!'... (and lots of running) But we stay for the stories, don't we? Not sure. It might be romance, too. I'm not really concerned the art of telling has been lost at the studio. I'm more concerned the story bit hide in little random crates that need to be unlocked.

I don't know the truth of it, it's just a hunch, but I think the game is going to be 'one thing'. Hopefully by Pax East, E3 we'll know how it will work

If there is agenda you better look at your posting. The point is that this forum deals with games published by EA so talking about stuff people feel concerned about tends to accumulate here. And since it's the year of the loot box, there are a couple of concerns about it.

Hopefully by Pax East, E3 we'll know how it will work I get that, which is why I expect you’ll be able to bring a team of friends with you even on “single player” missions (although for all intents and purposes you will still be the PC story wise). I don’t expect it to be a separate game mode, but I expect there will be a single player storyline not entirely dissimilar from previous Bioware games though probably less sprawling. In a game like Destiny, a storyline like that serves to introduce the world and to unlock locations, all gradually accustoming players to the game.

nothing about the single player campaign You assume there is a 'single player campaign', I'm not convinced that's true. I'm expecting a story set in a game world where you can team up with small groups, or indeed not. I'm not convinced there will be a single-player/multiplayer dichotomy. which is what I am afraid of....and what people above me are telling me is not possible
there will be no companions, no PC VS NPC interactions in the manner we are used to
No love interests, no best friends/buddies/rivals in the crew
it will basically be NOTHING of what we like from a bioware game and everything like Destiny with a soulless "make your own adventure with the repetitive quests we throw at you made shiny by our gorgeous graphics" sort of an excuse for a campaign

It’s possible, but I wouldn’t worry about it. It could happen, but just because they aren’t drawing attention to the usual Bioware stuff (which they never do) doesn’t mean it won’t be there. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just that there isn’t a reason to get worked up quite yet.

I'm expecting companions and/or other NPCs to be part of the mix, though at this point I have no clue how...
