We don’t have hard evidence either way. All we have is marketing speak, the word of the devs, and a brief demo built to advertise to the looter-shooter crowd. None of that is enough to have a clear picture of what the final product will be. That is the only point I’m making. I don’t really see why you would jump to the worst possibilities when the truth is that we know next to nothing about the final product.-(_ANTHEM_)-
Eh? We have both explicit and implicit evidence.
Explicit
Anthem has LBs. No question about that. Is both 1st person and 3rd person. Is a four team co-op online game. Supposed to last 10 years and we can play solo. It has exo suits with jump jets with underwater capability.... for starters.
The rest is implicit but strong facts supporting the "theory" it has MTs. (1) ME3MP + DAIMP + MEAMP
(2) Wilson quoted as saying he wants to exploit "Hyperspace". (3) Other EA games (BF2 + FIFA + UAFC ... etc) with predatory MT mechanisms supporting # (2).
(4) The fact that EA wants less but longer games = must have a constant revenue stream = MTs.
Additionally, recent games (ie: SWBF2 + UAFC) were designed as Pay-to-Win with the approval of EA. Recent quotes indicate that both the CEO and CFO of EA are well informed about the mechanics of their online revenue streaming games.
It is true that Anthem PR makes Anthem the new "Bob Dylan". However, the sole question is whether the Anthem architects agreed to a predatory MT mechanics as a core design.
While technically we know little, anecdotal evidence suggests much. The logic easily brings us to a game that is not all sugar and spice regardless whether it has a solid Single Player Campaign or not.
🌸
EDIT: Item (4) is a clear policy directive about game design for constant online revenue streaming and Visceral is a perfect example of what can happen for failing to adhere to that directive.
I agree with your post. The evidence is just in bioware's current gen history. It's not that they don't want to make a great game (they obviously are passionate, hardworking people), but the influence that is suggested onthe internet (EA) is just more and more visible game by game and bioware clearly has a management problem.
The evidence is circumstantial, sure, but if it looks and smells like fire, it's probably not a barbecue.
The main questionis not if there's goign to be MTX, but to how much of an extent will it pervade the gameplay?

Anthem has LBs. No question about that. I’m not sure where you learned what explicit means, but no, we do not know that. That is an assumption based on EA’s past business practices, it is not something we have explicit evidence of. I don’t even consider it unlikely, but that isn’t the same as having evidence. We don’t even know that much. All we know is that four player co-op will be a feature. We don’t know how this will fit in with single player story content they have told us will be in the game or anything else. And very little you describe here actually qualifies as evidence, most of boils down to: it agrees with my preconceptions so Anthem must have a horrible and exploitative monetization scheme. We do not have even anecdotal evidence of what systems will be present in Anthem. Yes, we know EA’s executives are keen on monetization. However, we do not know how the Battlefront 2 kerfuffle will affect their implementation going forward. Nor do we have an indication as to what the final shape of this game, all these pieces (micro transactions, story, co-op) fitted together, will look like.

The last few games released under the EA umbrella have had aggressive monetization schemes, so it stands to reason that Anthem will as well. It's possible that it might be tempered after the SWBF2 backlash, but time will tell.

I wish I could share your optimism, but maybe the worst incarnation of the cash grabbing schemes for barebone games will have occured before Anthem.

ok, present me with hard evidence of the contrary then... Because when ME1 was first revealed we already knew what a Bioware game was but they REAAAAALLY stressed out about the story, the character interactions and so on and so forth then from ME2 they focused on the action because the genere of the game was established. Right now all we know is that Anthem is a destiny wanna be. We don’t have hard evidence either way. All we have is marketing speak, the word of the devs, and a brief demo built to advertise to the looter-shooter crowd. None of that is enough to have a clear picture of what the final product will be. That is the only point I’m making. I don’t really see why you would jump to the worst possibilities when the truth is that we know next to nothing about the final product. uh because if there was a single player campaign in a Bioware-style sense it would be advertised explicitly. There is no reason not to advertise a positive feature. Silence and/or vague statements on something = the truth would piss the fan base off...this has been proven with Bioware multiple times.

No, it hasn’t. Following this logic, the entire game must piss people off because they haven’t revealed much of anything. They haven’t revealed whether there will Be pvp or how gear will work, so the answer must be aweful. They haven’t revealed what exactly a Shaper storm is, so the answer must be aweful. They haven’t revealed everything a Javelin can do, so the answer must be aweful. Pray tell, if there is no SP, why do they have a full writing team led by Drew Karpyshyn? Why would they have a fully staffed writing team if they weren’t writing any kind of single player story? There’s only so much lore and side quests they can write. Filling every gap in knowledge with the worst case scenario just because there’s a gap is asinine. There might be a reason for concern once they start revealing more about the game if there are conspicuous gaps, but not now when they’ve told us so little.

Actually, while I do not disagree with your logic, I would not mind it if the Anthem broke new ground and made an MP game with writing as interesting and cool as the better FPs and Operations in SWTOR, like for example the D7, Esseless, Athis, Ravagers or DF/DP. Obviously, would be nice if all that content had a story solo mode, so you could run sort of like companion missions in ME2 with a designated talkie helper if you come alone. Anyway, I am really hoping that Anthem will not have a continuous SP campaign from zero to hero, but rather an MP-enables brilliant short stories set in the world with temp characters with a bit of scenery dialogue that will join a solo player, while the MP gang can do them for gear and points with friends. Kindda a blend, you know? Still requires a writer, still interesting, but not necessarily a sequential campaign & companions with long dialogue trees and backstories, just cool story-specific chars. They can be along for the MP ride too, but stay out of fighting or not have jesus-mode. BioWARE is actually very strong in creating those one off characters and compelling short stories, both comic and more complicated, but it was a bit lost in the last years when we got so much companion content and epic multi-game story-lines.

It could be cool to see something a little like DA2, with multiple interconnected storylines rather than a single overarching epic. I still expect deep conversations with NPCs, but one thing I’ve been suspecting is that instead of companions we can bring into the field, we’ll have a bunch of handler. Voices on the radio during missions that provide bonuses and abilities, while providing Bioware’s usual deep characters at the Fort. That way you could still benefit even while playing with friends.

I'd prefer quest-specific boots on the ground NPCs to the quest-giver or advisor type handlers or in addition to them. I liked how they did it in the planetary/calss stories in SWTOR often, when you interacted with a character that was important to the story without that NPC becoming a permanent fixture. You just had an adventure together, it was enough to make a bright memorable character, but because the char was not staying, they did not have to build a huge story for him/her and could use bright colors in characterization. And if you did not like him or her, well, there was the next story around the corner. Would be cewl.

Destiny and Destiny 2 had a full writing team. Having a writing team ≠ Bioware storytelling and single player experience. Bioware's MO is always "if we are doing something that might piss off the fan base be quiet about it or vague". Case in point when they tried to axe out NG+ in ME2, the ending of ME3 (and how they remained super vague about it until release), Dragon Age 2 being pushed out way too early, A prisoner of Stone being made with the main game budget but being sold as DLC (same thing as they did with Javik) and so on and so forth. And they are not the only company doing that (look at 343 with halo 5 and the fiasco that was giving agent Locke 80% of the campaign while lying through their teeth about it). Until proven otherwise I will take the lack of knowledge and lack of transparency on this as an indication that the single player experience IF we could even call it that, will not be what we expect from a Bioware game.

All of these cases are where the developer was consistently opaque up to release. We are still at least 9 months out from Anthem’s release. Dragon Age Inquisition hadn’t even begun its marketing campaign at this point in development, we knew nothing about it. That is the comparison you are making, which is why your position is a bit ridiculous. Hasn’t anyone ever told you that absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence? I just don’t get why you have to assume the worst instead of waiting until we know more like a rational person.

Not getting the issue...
If you have concerns, don't pre-order, watch example vids, read player reviews, wait for price-drops, etc
I mean, you can expect the worst if you want, just seems like a lot of wasted energy on something of which little is known for certain. Considering the release date is a vague "late 2018", odds are good they are taking account of the player issues with BF2, Destiny 2 "Osiris", Modor, etc and making adjustments...just how much an adjustment, if any, remains unknown.

Well in case of Anthem, it would definitely be easier, considering it's their IP. People may have laughed at the whole 'pink Darth Vader' explanation from EA, but I do think it's a valid point, since it's been raised way before anyone from EA open their mouths and said it. EA can't do much there without approval of Disney, customization-wise. Anthem simply doesn't have such problem. There's also another thing. People keep comparing Anthem to Destiny, but what if its itemization or loot resembles more Warframe than Destiny, for example? I'm also curious whether earlier comparisons to Division may mean that we'd get something akin to their Dark Zones and whether the portals we see at the end of demo leads to areas/game mode of that kind?

But Bioware? No, not with the track record they are building and the company they work for.

To both @carefull and you concerning narrative: I wouldn't be against a MP only game on principle IF they implemented something like you suggested. An environmental short story type of narrative in various places would work for any number of people in the party. I'd be totally THRILLED about a game that allows me to go explore and discover cool things with friends. Find out what happened to a place. Maybe meet cool NPC explorers or survivors of a horrific incident. Team up with them, maybe get betrayed and then fight them... While sort of a cheap replacement for actual NPCs, voices over the radio or something can be a cool feature in what would otherwise have been a very lonely quiet affair. Firewatch made GREAT use of a radio companion. Loved it! I'd welcome a mix of all these elements. I would appreciate a real SP campaign but even if there isn't one, doesn't mean the game sucks or that it has no narrative. There are many different ways to tell a story. Bethesda does environmental storytelling very well. While they rely heavily on written notes, they also know how to tell a story by careful object placement. Instead of notes, Anthem could have a team find holotapes or recordings like they did in Horizon Zero Dawn. So that everyone can listen to it simultaneously. MP does not have to be shallow or badly written. It's always about what you do with it. At this point I see the chances of Bioware doing something fresh within an established genre and adding their own unique spin to it as 50/50. If Anthem was pushed at Bioware by EA demanding them to fall in line with their MT business model, then no good will come of it. If Anthem was Bioware's pitch to EA, it could be good. I still have faith in Edmonton even if many have left by now. But some of the trilogy team returned. We won't know which one it's going to be for at least another year. So I'll see the glass half full for now.

If the “worst” is *only* that it doesn’t have a traditional Bioware story experience, we will have dodged a fusillade of bullets. This whole thread is about not inconceivable things that could happen that are far, far worse. So if all that goes wrong is no romances, I for one will breathe a sigh of relief. Uhhh...no, because if the MT only affect the social aspect of the game and the hypothetical Bioware story experience is unaffected by it and it actually IS a Bioware story I could care less how many loot crate they throw in. No Bioware story experience = this is not a Bioware game which is THE worst possible outcome for someone who wants a goddamn Bioware game. smh Bro, I think you're going to be disappointed no matter what Bioware does. Humor me with some level setting ... were you disappointed with DAI or ME3, relative to previous installments in their respective franchises? To save time, I will assume the answer is yes and move on to my punch line, which is, what makes you think Bioware wants to even make GODDAMN BIOWARE games anymore? We already know that a big part of the genesis of Anthem was that the devs wanted to do something different.

Yes, a unique IP, so said Aaryn Flynn.
To continue: "In 2012, we began crafting a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay. Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20+ years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends."
So, I expect LBs, MTs and grind. Flynn did use the word stories. Perhaps we will get something like SWBF2 were the SP campaign continues with a DLC installment a month later or perhaps self contained stories. Interesting enough, he failed to mention romance and deep characters.
Also, Wilson stated that “the game is built around a live service” and due to the studio’s desire to add to its *“disruptive new social design”, from a PGMAMES article. And, "... takes elements from games like Destiny and The Division in order to compete within the growing MMO-lite market."
Thus, I agree that Anthem is not your traditional Bio game. 🌸
NB: * - No clue what that means. Speculations leads me to the dark side. But, if I were to, maybe new ( DLC ? )characters are added as time passes.

The thing is (what I believe most people feel): the POSSIBILITIES of this game (and bioware as a developer) are fantastic. But not a lot of people can take another 'dissapointment' (or a more accurate term: unfulfilled expectation) from bioware as a developer, which is why they try to remain as cycnical about the game as possible, to prevent their fragile ambitions from being hurt in the first place.
It's only a natural human reaction to history's lessons.
I myself have learnt that games isn't everything in my world anymore. And although I have good hopes for Anthem, there's always a next game from another developer.
