I really don't think it will matter what EA does with any game from this point. They have always been one of the most disliked publishers and I'm thinking it's at an all time high right now. I for one, think they earned it, but they have lots of soul searching to do before the masses calm down and so far, they just keep making that hole deeper.
EA isn't alone though, Bungie/Activision is getting hammered over D2. Prime opportunity for Bioware to grab the Destiny crowd if they do it right with Anthem, but I have no confidence that it will be and with the Overlords looming in the background, I hate to see what will become of it. Not that I plan to play it anyway.

EA is cracking down on their official forum(s) I have some sympathy for devs in this age of internet clickbait. Even the mildest tweet can become an internet storm. Devs lurk on forums (including this one) and should feel no obligation to have to answer questions. If marketing departments put additional pressure on employees not to speak, it would be a shame if that is done disproportionately. But given the hay that was made on Reddit after the "The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment" post, I can understand it. Devs who want stuff to 'be known' still have safe and secure channels they can use. Honestly, I'm not sure what they could do now without rocking the boat again, regardless of best intentions or best communicators they could pull from somewhere. From what I've seen what is considered the smartest PR strategy in face of such outrage is 'shut up and disappear for a little'. So I guess they're doing that. And hoping that people find target for their anger elsewhere in the meantime, lol.

I'd like to see a shift in the way PR is done. I agree that the PR post was pretty tone deaf. But the situation points to the only 'talking' that will be done in future will be highly controlled or the games themselves.

But given the hay that was made on Reddit after the "The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment" post, I can understand it.
I mean, was there any single gullible person in the entire world that actually bought that? "A sense of pride and accomplishment"? It sounds so cringy when taken in context of the game's progression system and P2W LB MT.
Gamers know how good progression systems work in good games, we don't have to be taught that, it's EA that completely failed in this regard.
This is either PR completely not understanding who they are talking to, or just corporate being corporate and assuming that their consumers are so dumb that they can basically get away with anything.
I'd like to see a shift in the way PR is done. If devs are afraid to speak candidly, that's their choice, but PR doesn't have to be this empty meaningless corporate babble. It can be more human, less pretentious.
Because basically, at this point, every time an EA suit (but not only) opens their mouth I'm just assuming that to a significant degree, they are probably lying.
-(_ANTHEM_)-
Once more the Destiny 2 user community is in an uproar. Look at the main page of Destiny 2 official forums. ... filled with requests to remove Eververse. At this point I believe the publisher doesn't care what the players want. I mean, they got caught holding back experience gains after a level cap. And now are at it again.
Industry self regulation simply does not work, imo.

Internet privacy is an illusion.
Snail mail is a dev's best tool (is this a chan you were suggesting?). Even then, wearing latex gloves when handling the paper is a good idea.. EA, imo, has the financial resources to track down the culprit(s).
Besides, why would a dev 'tell" and be fired, fined and have his/her rep ruined. Which studio would hire such a person? 🌸

you are after all talking about a studio that had to have a portion of the Diablo team imported from Blizzard proper to slap their nose and tell them "hey jackasses, putting a SECOND layer of RNG to your loot system that could ACTUALLY and VERY LIKELY demote the rarity of your loot upon opening it up because you think -it gives an extra thrill to the player- is a BAD thing and pisses people off"

Industry self regulation simply does not work, imo.
What works is when people stop buying shitty games, therefore pushing developers/publishers to change.
It's much easier and much more realistic than trying to regulate the industry into making stuff we want, because that will never work. At best they will be less blatant about certain practices.
point is sometimes publishers lie and developers -likely directed by the publishers- (directly or by omission)
Take Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Potential customers asked the developers if the game had a NG+ feature like the one implemented in the original -after MANY petitions-. Developers go on record saying "yes it does". What they FAILED to say is that unlike its predecessor's NG+ this one works only ONCE and in spite of the game telling you directly OTHERWISE -implying progression continues in NG++ and +++- the game will wipe out ANY progression you made in the second run and the only way to continue the progression is, you got it, to buy praxis and things with MTX. willingly BREAKING the feature to make an extra buck!
(don't even get me started with the BS that turned out to be Shadow of War....which I find even more despicable)
so one really does not know until they buy the game and in some cases have invested MANY hours into it if some shitty tactic was implemented

Right, and in that case, if you can prove wrongdoing, or rather false advertising, I believe it might be possible to sue the company. That's not something that requires more regulations, because according to the law that shouldn't happen anyway.
Corporate isn't going to suddenly stop being corporate, and a few regulations won't really change that, these people are adepts at dealing with regulations.
As an aside, I played DE:MD, and I used cheat engine to get what I "should" have paid for, and I'll admit, it was partially out of spite (the game didn't really hold my interest for long).
The bottom line IMO is that training consumers to be more aware and respond to this crap, is the ideal way to deal with it. Corporate is going to push, they don't care, they only see dollar signs, our job is to train them that at some point those dollar signs might take a hit if they don't restrain themselves.
I'm not enthusiastic about LB regulations because that might open the door for other things, but as long as they remain largely un-intrusive and stay on that issue, I guess it's fine.
That is a very large concern of mine, the internet might think it has won and then something worse will come out and fall within laws and regulations with developers being really careful about laws. Corporations have a long standing of finding ways around laws and regulations when it comes to their products, here in Canada Quebec is generally a void location for a lot of sweepstakes due to how their legislate them. In the rest of Canada according to a friend of mine that plays Magic when you are entering into a sanctioned tournament you aren't paying for entry into the tournament you are buying several packs of cards and then given free entry into the event. That has even happened digitally as I mentioned before with Blizzard side stepping regulations in China requiring odds being posted of the different items. Thinking that any type of legislation will fix this problem and protect people is a mistake, the systems might change but the reality will be that it would be microtransactions/lootboxes 2.0. If you want to fix the system convince the people that don't go to the internet for gaming information not to buy lootboxes for those are the people you need to stop buying these things so there is real change, not just reskinning of the existing problem since why should they listen to us complaining or not find work arounds when they are making hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars.

-(_ANTHEM_)-
Gaming addiction is a mental disorder that will become officially recognized next year, by W.H.O. (World health Organization). A beta draft is available here: icd.who.int/dev11/l-m/en#/http%3a%2f%2fid.who.int%2ficd%2fentity%2f1448597234Description of this disorder (current draft). "Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour (‘digital gaming’ or ‘video-gaming’), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline, manifested by: (1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); (2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and (3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.
The behaviour pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning. The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent. The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe."I wonder if Lee (the Hawaian state rep) will include this WHO recognition as an additional support argument for his intent to combat the "predatory behaviour" of video games. 🌸 In the meantime, have a: Merry★* 。 • ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ • •。★Christmas★ 。* 。 ° 。 ° ˛˚˛ * _Π_____*。*˚ ˚ ˛ •˛•˚ */______/~\。˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ •˛• ˚ | 田田 |門| ˚And a happy new year!

The problem wit that mindset is that said corporations have an army of well paid lawyers who help them skirt the boundaries of the law.
for instance DE:MD. The dev technically id NOT lie and the game only IMPLIES the progression continues
Shadow of war as well, They locked the "real ending" of the game behind a 15 hour slug called "act 4" which is a joyless repetitive exercise which is only alleviated by buying xp boosts to level up quicker and insure your orcs are up to snuff...and you goy it, the only way to buy those is with real world money...but they did not lie, they are engineering the game like a goddamn skinnerbox to make sure you will be tempted to buy it as much as possible.

Industry self regulation simply does not work, imo.
What works is when people stop buying shitty games paying recurrent revenue, therefore pushing developers/publishers to change.
Fixed it for you. We can disagree about whether a game is shitty or not, but I don't think there's much disagreement about the questionable value prop for mtx, loot boxes, and other recurring revenue streams. The less money that shit makes, the less of it we'll have to deal with in the future.

It's a shame too, because they still make good games ultimately. They just need to gut some middle management...but likely the studios go first.

Not that I plan to play it anyway. It's a shame too, because they still make good games ultimately. They just need to gut some middle management...but likely the studios go first. Studios go all the time, you can see it with all the non-stop whining about "old BioWare", people move on all the time to different studios for different challenges or promotions. You also see people leaving the industry when they are starting to set roots because it seems the game industry as a whole isn't a very good fit for that type of lifestyle, I know I would want to start a family if I have to worry about crunch. The other thing to consider is I haven't heard about massive amount of people leaving EA just a few people and the others have been mentioned as joining other studios as they ramp up. So even if a studio closes which might not be a big thing, nobody is losing their job which to me is the more important signal. As far as where to point the finger, I really don't know. At least with BioWare Montreal and Visceral it sounds like the people that worked there were just moved around if anything the people that were in danger probably were middle management and personally I think Frostbite could be one of the things that saved those jobs. For with the entire umbrella of EA using Frostbite it is much easier to pack your bags and move to a studio and not have to learn everything from the ground up again since they are using a different engine then the one that has been used for years. AskAGameDev was asked about studio closures the other day and EA has the same number of closures as Activision and each studio that was closed was around for at least five years a they have been rebranded or merged such as BioWare Montreal and Motive. Here is the link if you want to read it. LinkSomething I found out is that Take Two has the most studio closures out of any publisher and what I take away from the article is that it is considered a closure when people are terminated and not just shuffled around.

Snip They just need to gut some middle management...but likely the studios go first. Studios go all the time, you can see it with all the non-stop whining about "old BioWare" Snip Something I found out is that Take Two has the most studio closures out of any publisher and what I take away from the article is that it is considered a closure when people are terminated and not just shuffled around. -(_ANTHEM_)-
What it means, to me, is that EA is directing game design principles where online monetization is a priority.
Back in Novemeber 2017, CFO Blake Jorgensen speaking at the 2017 Global Technology Conference proves this thought (see above) with his "double talk" about "keeping the player engaged with the game they "love" " (no kidding with the grind) and that EA can "improve" the monetization experience along the way (for EA).
Add, "we find the consumer doesn't mind that," he said. "They're actually getting a chance to go deeper and spend longer in a game than they ever did before." (oh, yeah... 40 hrs to unlock one single main hero).
Last, this BS. "People don't talk about playing the game anymore, they talk about playing the live-service," Jorgensen said. "And we're not alone; the industry has moved this direction. This is where people are going.". What we talk about is shooting down this live-service crap. 🌸

That isn't true, they got more money from us in the 80's/90's before Microsoft decided to give the gaming culture and set a fixed price for games with the Xbox.

I think we will have to disagree on that. New games in the 80's ran anywhere from $30-$100. On avg, it was around $50. just depending on what you got. You were buying a complete game though. Now you pay on avg $60 or more if you get a special edition and most likely you aren't getting the complete game. I pay far more now that I did in the 80's or 90's and I don't typically buy games at full price. YMMV.

Well yeah, that's certainly a problem, but they would have their lawyers in regards to the LB regulations as well. As for Shadow of War, I would have simply used cheat engine or something. Fuck their MTs. I play on console so....I can't

˚ What that really translates to is: "They're actually getting a chance to open their wallets wider and spend more money in a game than they ever did before." EDIT: Oops, misread the quote. I thought this meant EA opening their wallets and spending more on the development of the game. But by a round-about path, got back to the same point, pretty much by accident.
That may be true, and would add to the probability that the game will "play it safe" and just be a Destiny retread. Who's going to risk a fuck ton of money on new, untried gameplay mechanics or plot twists? Particularly with D2 imploding under the gravitational pull of Activision's greed, there is a window open to dominate the space. On the up side, the opportunity is to not make the same mistakes of greed, so maybe they won'd do any stupid shit, like removing content when you buy an expansion (smh).

I never said it was all games, but they had the opportunity to charge what they thought the game cost for development and what they needed to charge to be profitable. For if I remember what I have read over the years normally they had much smaller teams around the fifty person range. Now they have huge development teams to try and jam in everything people want to try and appeal to a larger mass of people. Its why all games feel the same due to them all using the same systems. As far as incomplete versus complete, I rarely find a game is incomplete the only two games that really stick out for me was Jade Empire for the difference between the two halves of the game were drastic and the second Final Fantasy XIII game where you had to buy the ending with DLC.

Do you spend more that 115 American dollars on games these days? I can't recall many games I spent that much money on :S (possibly Civilizations and a few others). EDIT: I guess if you play the Sims you easily would and much more ...

Okay, let me run this idea by y'all. Let's assume recurring revenue features are inevitable and you want Anthem to succeed (if you hate Anthem and want it to die, don't bother to reply). What would be an acceptable/successful RR system for Anthem? What's a reasonable win-win compromise? Here's what I would propose: - Moratorium on mtx/lootboxes for at least 6 months after Anthem's release. No in-game or extra-game purchases will be supported by the game, at all. Not even cosmetic. (I'm not sure if this moratorium should be explicit or not, pros/cons either way, discuss below.)
- Make money on sales of the game itself and traditional DLC/expansions during the moratorium.
- DLC/expansions do not remove content and do nothing that could be perceived as breaking loot progression in a way that sets up for pay-to-win.
- At the end of the moratorium, release a free DLC that adds support for mtx. Existing or new owners of the base game can opt-out by simply not installing the DLC, however, the DLC introduces the following features which would only be available to those opting in:
- Explicit statement that RR will never be pay-to-win, with the possible exception of very limited grind "catch up" convenience.
- Cosmetic and quality of life (QoL) items, like extended inventory, or w/e.
- "Legendary" raids (or whatever the Anthem equivalent is). Base game still has regular raids open to everyone, but legendary are behind a paywall. Gear/loot rewards for legendary raids do not break the progression and are not substantially better than normal raid rewards, they are just cosmetic variants of normal raid rewards, but they have unique persistence -- meaning, there may only be 1 or a few of an item in the global persistence space, period. For example, there may be many "vorpal swords", but there is only one Sword of Grayskull vorpal sword, with stats identical to any vorpal sword, in the game, so whoever earns it gets bragging rights. Additionally,
"Legendary" raids have a separate leaderboard and scoring system (ala Destiny 1), so there is some incentive for certain types of players to pay for the opportunity to play -- mostly bragging rights. Legendary raids may have other cosmetic enhancements, like maybe you can create a guild of friends as a mercenary group with a name and banner and reputation, etc., that has persistence in the Hub. - Lootboxes with very limited RNG variation. You always know what you get within some kind of narrow boundaries, like class, rarity, weapon type (you'll know the difference between an LB that rolls a shotgun vs. a pistol, for example), etc. Again, no progression breaking -- rather, pay to avoid grind sort of idea, but limited.
[/ul] Pros/Cons of explicitly announcing moratorium at release/review time.Announcing it has the benefit of reassuring purchasers that they will have an RR free game if they so choose. The downside is that making the moratorium deadline explicit could lead to backlash that hurts initial sales -- because no matter what deadline is selected, someone will hate it and create an online petition against it. The advantage of not announcing the moratorium is that it avoids that backlash, but with the significant risk of a "bait-and-switch" or "reneg/betrayal" accusation once the moratorium is lifted. Initial purchasers will be lulled into believing there will be no RR forever without a statement to the contrary, so any introduction down the line will generate a strong reaction. It won't matter that RR is opt-in, people will overreact.
