Does AC have microtransactions? It does. I'll detail it because the categories are interesting. The first category is 'time savers' (for people who want stuff 'now' rather than play the game.) - Maps to collectible items
- Packs of crafting resources
- Packs of in-game currency
- Packs of level-up skill points
Basically, you could throw $40 in and get 'First Game +', going into the game with a leveled and cash-rich character with easy map links to key stuff. Or you could throw $10 in and just have the game a little easier. Imagine how DAI could have done this, buy power points, ability points, map to bottles, packs of Elfroot and Fade-touched materials. But all optional. The second category is 'gear', which is basically It's not all cosmetic, there might be a particular weapon with a combination of features you like. None of it is essential, some of it is pretty whacky, some of it is fan service, all of it can be obtained in-game randomly from the merchant. And don't forget this is a single-player game, so there's no pay-to-win. I had no particular interest in time savers, but as these aren't predatory microtransactions I did splash out on a precursor horse armor and shield to go with the precursor outfit I'd worked hard to obtain in-game. So I spent $7 for some fun... That compares with the pretty poor 'Spoils of the ...' costume packs in DAI. The key lesson is that Ubisoft have included microtransactions in a single player game, but without them feeling overly greedy and genuinely optional. Seems plenty greedy to me SJ, though my tolerance for the monetisation of previously costless virtual modes and items and the introduction of money making elements around which a game might easily be balanced, to its detriment, is pretty low.

I understand the sentiment. I would agree if there were any signs of the game being balanced to encourage MTX purchase. I've maxed my skill tree, all crafting upgrades and have weapons of the highest power by playing normally. My assessment of their greed or otherwise is less important to me than enjoying a complete and balanced game (which I have done) for my $60.

Speaking of which, the map purchase does seem like a waste of money, assuming someone will write up a wiki page eventually, for free. If that was towards what I was saying its not that the map purchase was free or not, for there are plenty of maps showing where the items are in the game already. It just seems like they are trying to funnel people to make purchases by limiting the detection radius of walking by them in the game itself. If the detection radius was the same or even close it wouldn't be an issue for me for this seems to have the intent of making it frustrating for those that might not check a wiki so they go and make that purchase instead of just leaving that radius to be the same as the other collectibles in the game. Edit: Just to put a bit of my experience out there. I found nearly all the standard collectibles just playing the game that had maps that weren't from premium DLC, but I found only one music box in the game which there are if I remember correctly 20 of in the game because its detection radius was so small. There were so many of the other premium collectible that I think I found about half of them.

but I found only one music box in the game which there are if I remember correctly 20 of in the game because its detection radius was so small. We might need to go back on topic soon, but wasn't there a picture clue and written clue for each of the music box locations? It wouldn't be a good puzzle if it just popped up on your map when you synchronized? I'll admit I used the map because it was easier.
And there's part of the problem. I like a good puzzle/challenge in a game, but if you can pay for a solution, it's easy to interpret the reason for the puzzle to exist is the payment, not the puzzle itself. The payment option can impact the player's perception of whether something is a tough challenge or a cynical grind. In Assassin's Creed II I voluntarily collected 100 bloody feathers without a whiff of a microtransaction.

Is Easy mode a cheat? Is looking up walkthroughs and wikis on a game cheating? Speaking of which, the map purchase does seem like a waste of money, assuming someone will write up a wiki page eventually, for free. No, Easy Mode is not a cheat! But now, we have Genesis MTX! You can pay us almost a second time for your same video game, and we'll make it easy for your total scrub casual piece of shit ass. Sorry, got a little mad for a second. Seriously though, whales are ruining gaming for the little people, and the real gamers. If I could hunt them for their blubber, Greenpeace would be on DEFCON 5 looking for Qui-Gon Glenn the master whale hunter.

No, Easy Mode is not a cheat! There's an idea... A default difficulty setting, but if you want 'easy mode' (or hardcore) you can unlock it for $10...! But that could never happen...

That's nothing, soon we`ll be billed for each save state because it's gonna be a cloud save and that's live services and that is costly stuff, so we better pay up for this greatest invention since sliced bread.

Don't know if any of you play Sims 4 (another EA franchise), but they have hit an all time low now. They released an underwhelming Expansion not long ago called Cats & Dogs, which as you might expect, adds those to your game play. Now they just announced that they are releasing a Stuff Pack this month that adds content to that expansion. So instead of including it in the $40 you already paid for the exp, you get the privilege of paying $10 for the added content. An exp of the exp. Needless to say, fans of the game aren't happy about it.
Just another way EA is fleecing it's customers without using a loot box.

I'm not necessarily a big fan of the franchise anyways but it was fun playing the older versions in the past. Since I primarily play on console I was waiting for it to come out on Xbox and it did. The problem I had was it came out at 50$ but then I saw like a dozen add-ons to it. Those add-ons totaled up is like another 60$+ and that is what stopped me from buying as I 1. Wondered if they enhance the experience so much that it would be smart to pick them up but the pricing (which is #2.) is to high to me. I even waited till they were on sale and I still thought they were just to expensive to be worth it. Then 3. Seeing the reviews on those add-ones, a lot of people were saying they were having a lot of issues with them. I don't want to pay over 100$ for everything only to have various parts not work right. There's also the chance it doesn't perform well on console since it is pc design first and some games don't translate to console control very well. ive pretty much lost interest in it for the pricing and just the stuff I'm hearing from it.

That is how the Sims games have always worked, a lot of expansions. From what I was reading is that the reason why they even bothered with Sims 4 was because they couldn't get Sims 3 to work properly with any new expansion so they made a new engine. Now my experience with the Sims games is I am not the target audience for it and avoid them.

Sadly the whole gaming industry has caught the eye of the Board room and share holders and we are either going to have to get used to paying a much higher price to do what we love, or find a way to fight back!
An example of a new gaming manipulation is a small Bethesda title called Fallout, which I had never played before (excellent series by the way, as I picked up 3 and New Vegas for dirt and played them). My son told me I should give Fallout 4 a try and it was on Live for a free weekend or purchase for $20. Great deal and it is a few years old, but man I got hooked. But to really play the game, as you get into this story, is the season pass, which even today is $69.99 + tax Cdn. IT would have been much cheaper to buy the GOTY version, but I got sucked in!
Fallout as well has its in game purchases called creators club. THough none of it is essential to game play, you have some pretty powerful firepower in there.

A total ripoff. 1st Bethesda rips off the creators. 2nd they rip off the people buying it. Double win for Bethesda.

Going by the title alone, people can be really dumb so yes the ESRB needs to make sure the "dumb" people are able to understand things.

I think it should be pretty clear by now that the ESRB and big publishers like EA have no respect for their audience, hell I would even go so far as to say that it is verging on utter disdain and contempt. Thing is with so many people still giving them money and supporting the crap they put out why would they? Show a corporation you are ok with being exploited and they will see how far they can push the limits, I find it a little sad that we need government intervention to protect consumers from their own dumb decisions.

That is how I feel about most corporations for they are just in it to make as much money as possible from their consumers. There is a reason why red and yellow seem to be the most common colors in restaurants or that in a grocery store where they put the candy is where children will see it, its all about manipulation.

Stuff like this is going to be the norm as they are going to look for ways to move away from lootboxes or increase revenue in games without lootboxes. The thing is the majority of people don't care unlike the clickbait title of the video suggests for if fans were pissed they wouldn't buy it and EA wouldn't do it, its really that simple.

I have to say I'm curious what EA (and other publishers) is doing with their products after SW BF II uproar (and the surprising revelation about FIFA games) so I'm keeping an eye out on such updates. I didn't bother before but now, I think I have to.

Nothing is going to change and frankly YongYea is a video producer I don't bother with anymore so if you are going to want to change people's minds you might want to find a different source for I am pretty sure I am not the only one that feels that way.

I'm no fan of predatory microtransactions, but I'll give Yong's clickbait videos a miss... Yong either doesn't know what he's talking about half the time, or is inaccurate because he's pushing an agenda. I laughed when he said Battlefront 2 was rushed out the door incomplete. EDIT: Oh he was talking about Battlefront 1. Fair enough. There's not too much difference between Sims 4 and Sims 3. Yes this latest pack is a dlc for a dlc, but Sims 3 also had over 400 dollars of expansions released for it. Sims 4 base game is pretty much a similar quality experience to sims 3 base game. Sims 3 base has more content and is more open world, yet sims 4 base has more options relating to the actual characters, and which you'd prefer depends on what you're looking for. Sims has been a predatory gaming experience for about 9 years now.
