In all honesty, whenever I see someone post "end of rine" or "ding dong bannu" the first thing I think is "oh, a casual racist."
If he's an asshole, call him that and I don't have a problem with it. But ridiculing a (probable) Chinese-Canadian who speaks English fluently by giving him a badly done Japanglish accent is rather offputing. Especially now that it's entered wider gamer culture and people just spout it without knowing its origins.
In the grand scheme of things, these videos aren't on the scale of cops shooting unarmed black men, but as an Asian seeing other people celebrating them makes me feel kind of unwelcome here.
I understand if you don't care about that, in which case carry on, but just in case you might care but didn't know I thought I'd bring it up.

I understand if you don't care about that, in which case carry on, but just in case you might care but didn't know I thought I'd bring it up. You're thinking too hard. And that's pretty bad coming from the Salarian. I'm just letting you know how I feel. When I was growing up, we used to call everything we felt was ridiculous "retarded." Its connotations with people with developmental delays wasn't consciously referenced, so it wasn't said with malice toward anybody, it was just slang for "stupid." But one day I said, "oh, that's retarded" and the person I was talking to said: "actually, my brother has severe autism and I'd appreciate it if you didn't say that around me." And I realized that things I said without thinking were actually hurtful to people. So I was glad she told me so that I could stop being unintentionally dickish. I'm not claiming that people who find Stanley Woo getting taken down amusing are full-on racists. (I shouldn't have used that word as it immediately puts people on the defensive.) Just that using race as part of the takedown and seeing it get a pass around here makes me feel slightly unwelcome as an Asian. I understand I don't speak for everyone. I'm sure there are many Asian forumites who aren't bothered by it, but if I feel this way there are likely others who also feel uncomfortable but who don't want to be seen as "thin skinned" or "bad sports" by bringing it up. Again, I'm fine with calling out jerk mods. Just not with singling them out for physical traits. I'd be just as disapproving of people fat shaming Chris Priestley. But this thread is obviously not for me, so carry on. Edit: Maybe I'm sensitized since one of my good friends in school was named Stanley Wu. (No relation.)

And I have cancer but when people say EA is the cancer of the gaming industry I wholeheartedly agree
You are only offended if you CHOOSE to be
Today's culture has conditioned people to think that they SHOULD be offended just because they hear a trigger word, even if it doesn't ACTUALLY offend them. I've got better things to focus my attentions on

Rhine is a river next to my doorstep." - I took me a while to realise that it is a mock-up of a japanese accent. And then I thought it's a really poor way to make a joke, but whatever, humour is a delicate matter. In any case - if you still feel unwelcome: Shinobu . I know noone can resist to der love.

Let me say first of all this is not directed at Shinobu, who is a far senior BSNer to me, a longtime veteran of the original boards, and is worthy of respect and admiration. As a matter of fact I missed the entire reign of the mod in question. Rather, I am discussing the general concept of easily taking offense at things. So, here in Japan people are routinely savagely mocked on primetime TV shows for looking like rodents or monkeys or other delightful metaphors. In fact, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Lord Regent and the first ruler of a unified Japan, was butt ugly and called "Saru-san" (Mr. Monkey), though of course not to his face because he employed lots of samurai with sharp swords. Foreigners in Japan who appear on TV (aka "pet gaijins") are either pale, blonde, blue-eyed people or black because that's what foreigners look like. I, personally, as a hairy Celt so pale you could show movies on me, have had Japanese people move away from me on the train, get out of communal hot spring baths with me, and cower in fear (or snicker at me). And you know what? It doesn't bother me. Do you know why? Warning! Profanity follows. Don't say I didn't warn you! And as it turns out, guess what? Most Japanese people are pretty nice. In fact, I would say the asshole population here is around 23% or so, which is rather standard for most nations I've been fortunate enough to visit. And as for the hot springs, I've had other groups of old Japanese guys strike up friendly conversations with me while we're all sitting butt naked in ludicrously hot acidic water. And finally, Mrs. Saikyo, who is herself Japanese, thinks it's uproariously funny when she tries to pronounce fun words like "rolling pin" and little Saikyo Jr. laughs at her attempt. Perhaps it's all just a matter of perspective. But my personal opinion is that a healthy dose of IDGAF goes a long way. If anyone would like to have me banned, the button's right over there. ----------->I'll be on vacation so I guess I'll find out when I get back

I've got better things to focus my attentions on You reminded me that I said in another thread "the Raptor gave me cancer" but then hearing from TTT about her RL cancer made me realize I was being unintentionally dickish again. And now I'll try not to use that phrase because it's insensitive to cancer survivors. Sometimes we all need a reminder that stuff we say can accidentally graze someone we weren't aiming at. And Saikyo, why on Earth would anyone want you banned? I'm Japanese-American, and I will readily admit that the Japanese (and Japanese-Americans) can be extremely racist and sexist (one of the reasons I'm very happy my family came to America). I struggle with my own biases too. I should not have tossed out the "racism" word. It would have been better if I had said "any time I hear 'end of rine' it bugs me." Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful and kind responses, guys! I was expecting more "GTFO" actually. Sorry for derailing the thread.

Supposing there was a movie about a guy who has cancer, and he was a whiney little crybaby. That's fine, I don't care.
But now suppose that the movie was portraying ME as the whiney little crybaby. Then I'd take issue with that.
The difference is that I know that the character is not me. You have to realize that Stanrey Woo is not you. He is just an eccentric character who has nothing to do with you.

Then I'd take issue with that. The difference is that I know that the character is not me. You have to realize that Stanrey Woo is not you. He is just an eccentric character who has nothing to do with you. Do you think I should make another thread for this tangent? It wasn't my intent to hijack what was intended to be a lighthearted thread. I'm not sure your analogy is apt, because it isn't generally a stereotype that cancer survivors are whiny babies AFAIK (correct me if I'm wrong), so seeing another cancer patient labelled a "crybaby," you probably wouldn't have faced that yourself. That person is being treated as an individual, as he should be. Let me see if I can explain. My family has been American for over 100 years and the only language I speak fluently is English. However, when I was a kid the other kids would pull the corners of their eyes up and make "ching chong" noises at me. Even now, my daughter's principal greets all the white parents and talks to them at open house, but turns away and acts busy when Indian and Asian parents want to talk to her (maybe she's afraid she won't understand us, maybe she's afraid we're tiger moms who will demand more homework, lol). People tell me all the time that my English is "real good" and ask me "no, where are you from really?" when I say I'm from California. So I come into the situation with experience having been lumped into the "f-ing immigrant who can't speak English" category. The goal of the Stanrey Roo videos was to humiliate Stanley Woo (because of his heavyhanded moderation practices) and the way it was done was to pretend he doesn't speak English because that's an easy thing to ridicule and it's likely to get under his skin more because he's probably dealt with it all his life. So it's pretty much cyberbullying using racial stereotypes, IMO, which presses all of my buttons. When I see people on the forum applauding that, I wonder if they are the type of people who would treat me that way, or applaud other people treating me that way, which makes me wary. And as for your video, Dayman, South Park is pretty evenhanded about ridiculing everyone. The clip isn't about humiliating a real person. While some might see it as racist, I personally think it's hilarious, though it would be better if the VAs were actually Asian. It's inaccurate, though, because most sushi places (at least around here) aren't actually run by Japanese people but by Koreans and Chinese people.
