nothing irrefutable springs to mind, and I'm not sure I have a binary opinion one way or the other, but I offer the following points for consideration: - most of the statues and murals of him we see in the game were made by post-Fall of Arlathan elves who we now know believe/d some erroneous things about the Creators and Fen'Harel, or by followers of Fen'Harel in his pre-Veil activities, who would be invested in the idea of their leader as a powerful figure and their rebellion propaganda ('another story written in desperation to give me more credit than I ever deserved'), i.e. iconography. There's one possibly-drawn by the man himself-mural of relevance (beyond the obvious wolf iconography in the skyhold rotuda that he does) and its the Check Out My Awesome Fursona one from Trespasser. the scrap of writing from the qunari agent describes it as an excavated mural, believed to be a self-portrait by Fen'Harel. emphasis on the believed, and that this is the opinions of the qunari who came across it [?] The question of course is, is he literally able to transform into the creature? or is it symbolic and represents abstract concepts to him of the way he's seen by his enemies and his followers, of the mantle he's taken on and the role he thinks he has to play, and his burden (both pre-Veil and now)? elsewhere you can see him in murals wearing the skin of a wolf like a cloak. that imagery always spoke to me of the mantle and burden ideas. course, why not both? - the rare art of shapeshifting survives in corners of Thedas even today. it wouldn't be far-fetched that he's able to shapeshift. shapeshifting as a magical skill is known among some of the Dalish, Mahariel can tell Morrigan some Keepers are able to do it. or morrigan tells mahariel that. whatever. anyway they preserved that ancient skill magicness from somewhere (ancient elven magic) - I have a pet theory that all the Evanuris were able to or regularly transformed into dragons, and were shapeshifters in general.

And, of course, Shapeshifting was a magical ability in DA:O. Morrigan taught it to a moderate-approval Warden, which unlocked the spells to turn into a bear, a giant spider, a swarm of insects, a bereskarn or a corrupted spider depending on how many points you dumped into that ability set.

I miss the shapeshifting ability from DA:O.
Sometimes I get a tiny bit miffed that, if Morrigan drinks from the Well, she learns how to turn into a dragon, but the Inquisitor doesn't.
I mean, I totally get why the devs did that, but still....how cool would that have been? Turning into a dragon? *sigh*

I think Solas can shapeshift into a wolf, it's just that there was no reason for us to see that in Inquisition. If he'd shown the ability during the game, it might have been too easy to guess his secret, rather like if they'd kept him wearing dreds. I'm *very* interested in knowing if he can shapeshift into a dragon, though.

I'm *very* interested in knowing if he can shapeshift into a dragon, though. I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Remember Ancient Elvhen Writing text? It mentions a trial of an elf who "took on a form reserved for the gods and their chosen, and dared to fly in the shape of the divine". Something tells me that this shape might ba a dragon, especially in light of Yavana's words of a world before the Veil, when dragons ruled the sky. And no, I'm not mentioning it to recall a strange theory some had prior Trespasser that it was Solas who was put on trial - what we know so far however is that he was at some point seen as a god and at another he was likely Mythal's guardian, which must've put him among those chosen by the gods.

I was also thinking about the qunari who appeared to have died of sheer terror. Now maybe that was some sort of spell similar to what a necromancer can do. Or, perhaps just the sight of the Dread Wolf is enough to kill. Then I thought, perhaps that's what the whole 'I would not have you see what I become' was all about. Maybe it wasn't that he didn't want the Inquisitor to see him doing bad things, but that seeing the Dread Wolf might literally kill her. I've obviously had too much free time to think about all this.

I don't think these guys died because Dread Wolf scared the at all. When Solas encounters qunari on his path, he turns them to stone, as evidenced by petrified Qunari in his sanctuary and before we meet him - so why should he change his modus operandi in the Library? It's only when we find two qunari soldiers scared to death when we can activate the fight with Librarians. And the Librarians are Fear demons. It's basically a foreshadowing before the fight.

It seems we are in need of a distraction from languishing in Solavellan hell, so I have a question. I have been wondering if there is any sort of irrefutable proof that Fen'Harel physically transforms into a wolf-like creature. I know we have all kind of statues and murals and stories and such depicting him as a wolf, but that isn't really physical evidence. We see Mythal depicted as a dragon, and we know that is accurate because we have physically seen her transform into one. Nothing irrefutable, but both the Temple of Mythal and Temple of Dirthamen were Pre-Veil structures and had statues of Fen'Harel as a wolf. Mythal had him depicted as a wolf in her own temple, in mosaic form as well. His literal self-portrait that is in the Darvaarad, has an image of him as both elf and giant demon wolf. On twitter, Patrick Weekes said that there is no reason Solas wouldn't know shapeshifting magic: Yes, I think he can and has become a wolf at will.

These days they like to torment King Alistair by stealing all the cheese in Denerim.

Dread somethingorother, indeed. lol Random aside: You can hear wolves howling when you are trudging your way along in the blizzard after Haven. I like to headcanon that was Solas looking for us, either in person or via communication with actual wolves. I mean, I'd think real wolves minding their own business in that kind of weather would be quiet and in their den otherwise, not out howling. Though don't quote me on that, I suppose.

Wolves only use dens for a couple months of the year, when the female parent has her pups. They make use of a den from the pups' birth until they're ready to move about on their own and go to rendezvous sites - at about 8 weeks old. So real-world wolves wouldn't be in a den in the winter.

I think it was mostly symbolic. I mean... Solas's murals in Skyhold are about Inquisitor and Inquisition and he painted howling wolves in a mural fragment that depicts formation of Inquisition - the formation of a new pack. I don't think it's a coincidence that the howling becomes more frequent and insistent the closer Inquisitor gets to the Inquisition's camp.
