midnight tea I also don't read anything really deep about what Solas says there. Solas is canonically a Dreamer/Rift Mage. It's been established in-world that Dreamers are extremely rare in modern Thedas. Rift magic is a specialization, and one which is very new to modern Thedosians (although evidently not to Solas). Dreamer and Rift magic are the schools of magic that would most likely be useful in managing the rifts that open up after the Breach. Since one is extremely rare and the other is "new" with only one known practitioner other than Solas (unless the Inquisitor is a mage and takes it as their specialization, in which case there are three known Rift mages), either school of magic could be considered an extraordinary type of magic. I'd advise to pay a bit more attention to context of the whole exchange: Solas said he couldn't close the rifts and 'no ordinary magic would affect them' - that means that whatever magic HE tried has failed, so whether being Rift Mage or Dreamer (is it even a separate type of magic rather than a specific talent?) is rare in modern Thedas is entirely beside the point. I'm fairly sure that Solas had tried his rift magic or whatever he could throw at it - so while wielding raw Fade may not be a common school of magic, by Solas's own words it appears to be still within confines of 'ordinary' type of magic. The interesting thing about this exchange is exactly that - why the guy wielding seemingly rare types of magic still deems them as ordinary, what is extraordinary magic then and where can one buy it, and why the guy who obviously knows many obscure types of arcane arts was unable to throw at rifts anything other than 'ordinary' magic.

Not really beside the point if you think about it. Within the context of DAI, Solas is still extremely weak from his slumber at this point in the game. He's as effective as / as low a level as the rest of the companions and the Inquisitor. So he may have tried Rift magic and failed because he doesn't have the power he had before he put up the Veil. One of the ironies of the game is that by bringing him along for the Inquisition we're helping him to power himself up to achieve his goals. Him being too weak doesn't make Rift magic banal.

Within the context of DAI, Solas is still extremely weak from his slumber at this point of the game. He's as effective / as low a level as the rest of the companions and the Inquisitor. So he may have tried rift magic and failed because he doesn't have the power he had before he put up the Veil. One of the ironies of the game is that by bringing him along for the Inquisition we're helping him to power himself up to achieve his goals. Just like it's unlikely that all companions have forgotten how to use their own specializations at the start, there's no reason to think that everybody started at 'level one'. Solas may have narrative reason to be weaker, but what's Cassandra's or Varric's or in fact anyone else's excuse? That's just your typical, hard to avoid ludonarrative dissonance. I wouldn't read TOO much into it - because even if we naturally assume that Inquisitor and companions have grown in power as the story progressed, we actually have no idea how powerful Solas was, even when it comes to 'ordinary' magic. He'd have reasons to hide whatever he thought would draw too much attention to himself, nevermind that that's just his typical MO, apparently. Iron Bull even makes it a point to mention that 'nothing gives Solas away', thus nobody sees him coming. So the question whether 'ordinary' just means 'ordinary level' or something else remains open - I mean, Inquisitors start as level 1, and story-wise they have all the reasons in the world to be underpowered compared to their companions, yet they CAN close rifts since they wake up from their excursion to the Fade. The Anchor's magic is clearly the 'right' sort, unlike Rift Magic, to a point that they're the only ones able to deal with the crisis.

I took it as meaning whatever magic the orb contained that used to be his, but is now in Quizzy's hand. He can't close the breach without that particular magic. No?

I took it as meaning whatever magic the orb contained that used to be his, but is now in Quizzy's hand. He can't close the breach without that particular magic. No? Yea, but it still leaves the question of why makes this magic 'not ordinary' - especially that the same character said at some point that 'magic is magic, just like water is water'. It may be so, but some magic in that stream seems more peculiar than others. Which brings another question - why couldn't he wield power that was obviously his to a point that he seemed unable to close even a small rift? I can't help but wonder what happened. Was it because of the effort put into the Veil or something else - perhaps it's related to Cole's cryptic comment about wolf chowing its leg off to escape some kind of trap? Maybe Solas, being a forward-thinking guy, knew that he'd have to sacrifice a part of himself; so, as a safeguard, he's split and saved a portion of that specific power in his orb and let it rebuild that way as he slept. We do know that splitting one's power - even splitting oneself - is a thing that is possible in this universe and demonstrated by none other than Flemeth, the former Evanuris not even at her full power, and Corypheus, who supposedly nicked the idea of horcruxing himself from the orb.

Yeah, I thought very much the same. Both the Orb and Anchor are said to operate using Ancient Elven magic, so even though Solas knew that magic and likely how to close the Breach/Rifts, he lacked both the power and means to do anything about it.
I imagine that his initial plan at Haven was to get close to the Inquisitor and try to take the Anchor for himself, but quickly realised it was permanently bonded to them. All he could do was (temporarily) stablise the spread of the Anchor, in the hopes they might recover, wake up and be able to close the Breach/Rifts for him.

So Bethesda released a teaser for a new Fallout game, Fallout 76. I've always loved the Fallout games, since they were first licensed by Black Isle (RIP) way back when. Anyone else sort of excited for this upcoming game? Also... stupid elf. Stupid, gorgeous, intelligent, self depricating, melancholy elf.

Anyone else sort of excited for this upcoming game? Yup! I'm hoping its set somewhere in the south, based off the song choice. It definitely looks like its a full entry in the series, too, despite not being the right number. Like New Vegas. I only really got into the series with 4, but definitely looking forward to this one. Maybe settlement building will be improved upon? (Before mods come in to fix it anyway, I mean.) I loved that feature.

Not much of a Solas fan, but found this on Twitter today while trying to see Mark Darrah's tweet about not E3 info for DA4 this year. And thought it was kinda hot.

According to the Fallout lore, Vault 76 is one of the control vaults - as in no weird stuff was done to the vault or its inhabitants. It is located somewhere near D.C. and West Virginia is only about an hour away. It looks like it will happen about 20 years after the "incident" and the developers said to not expect just another single player RPG game. So, I wonder if they're going to do something multiplayer, not full-scale MMORPG. Maybe something closer to like Inquisition's multiplayer. The story will probably be about the first protected folks coming up to the surface and rebuilding civilization around Vault 76 as their base.

I have heard that it's supposed to be more multiplayer than not, similar to Ark? I've not played Ark so I don't know what that's like. But hearing "multiplayer" kinda of killed my interest in the game. I play a lot of multiplayer games, I don't want to get involved in another one.

I had to take an impromptu road trip today and Tom Petty's Free Fallin' came on the radio as I drove. I entertained myself by changing out some words to make it work for Solavellan, sorta. Are there some better DA references to use, do you think?
Free Fallin’ (Solas remix) [Verse 1] She's a good girl, loves her mama Loves Sylaise and Elvhenan too She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Zither Loves halla and her boyfriend too It's a long day, livin' in the past There's an eluvian in the yard And I'm a bad boy, cause I don't even miss her I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart
[Chorus] And I'm free, free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin') Yeah I'm free, free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin')
[Verse 2] All the elvhen, walkin' through the forests Move west down the old lost pathways And all the bad boys are standing in the Crossroads And the good girls are home with broken hearts
[Chorus] And I'm free, I'm free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin') Yeah I'm free, free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin')
[Verse 3] I wanna glide down over Arlathan I wanna write her name in the sky I'm gonna free fall out into nothin' Gonna leave this world for awhile
[Chorus] And I'm free, free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin') Yeah I'm free, free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin') And I'm free, free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin') Oh! Free fallin' (Free fallin', I'm-a free fallin') And I'm free, oh! free fallin'

"And I'm a bad boy, cause I don't even miss her I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart" Well, we know he misses her. So maybe - I'm a bad boy, because I misled her. "And all the bad boys are standing in the Crossroads And the good girls are home with broken hearts" And all the bad boys are locked with the Evanuris Just thoughts.

Random shenanigans at Bioware and stuff... To work somewhere where you can regularly refer to the Arishok's junk must be fun. Also, that middle tweet. Love Domino. I know some of you, like me, know her from previous work on MMORPG's. EverQuest 2 and Rift. I don't care what she's involved in for Bioware, it's going to be as awesome as she is allowed to make it and filled with hard work and love. She is such a big-hearted, funny, friendly spirit. I've been honored to be able to meet her on several ocassions.

*honors the moment*
However, have you read the commotion over Anthem not having romance options? People freaking out that this might mean no more romance ever in other titles. Look, if a game isn't really designed for romanceable companions/NPC's, that's okay. Anthem looks to be more MOBA with some RPG elements anyway.
Bioware is known for their deep stories and entertaining romances. I don't think they'd let EA remove those elements completely from their games.
Hopefully, now that Anthem is unveilled and stuff, we'll get some DA crumbs.

What amused me though is he mentioned "we have romances in Mass Effect and Dragon Age" and he didn't mention SWTOR. Its funny, cus isn't SWTOR the most comparable game to Anthem out of Bioware's current roster?

MOBA = Mobile Online Battle Area. Things like Overwatch equal MOBA to me. I'm not a big PvPer. I'll do it if my RPG guild wants to, but I'm usually just fodder. If I misconstrued Anthem as a thing it is not, my apologies. Anthem doesn't seem to be something I'd get into and stay into. Maybe more like Diablo 3 or Path of Exiles. Run missions, clear out dunegons, solo or with friends. Fun for a bit, but if I'm going to grind, I need something to keep me interested.
