Ahhhh, Felassan. T_T Jsyk, I'm already there, if we're having a "Bring Back Best Elf" campaign.

plot twist: felassan is shartan! Small problem with any theory that X is Shartan is that he was killed trying to rescue Andraste and ended up being burned along with her. So they could only be his spirit occupying a new body. I'd rather just keep Shartan as an honest to goodness hero of an earlier age, who the human scholars constantly try to undermine with their suggestion that there were many Shartans or his story is based on elven folktales about a trickster warrior who fought against tyrants (so the Dalish tell stories about Fen'Harel's rebellion but don't remember who he was?). After reading the Canticle of Shartan I always feel that the most significant part of it is that Andraste regarded Shartan as her counterpart among the elves and thus her equal, instead of prophet and disciple. Also never forgetting that we actually meet the shade of Shartan in the gauntlet.

Fenarel, too. My Mahariel's first and true love.
It'll be just one big elf party at the end of the world.

I think many Lavellans are older because it makes sense that Solas would be interested in someone with a lot of life experience. I think also, if you're over 35, your ideas about what's important in a partner include having been through trials and difficulties and a working knowledge of how to overcome adversity. I'm not saying your headcanon is wrong, of course-- it really can't be because we all imagine our Lavellans differently. But I think it's for these reasons that many Lavellans are older. I never considered that. It really would be a bit odd if Solas felt attracted to someone who is just fresh off her teens.

I can feel that; Solas is definitely an experienced individual and could see people wanting to try to match that but I don't think anyone could, except for another ancient elf. What I liked about having the young and innocent contrast is that Solas can possibly realize he's too wrapped up in himself and his past. He has forgotten about the new and the all the wonder it can bring, until my Lavellan shows up. He admits that he didn't see you as a person at first, but when he falls in love, it changes everything and he begins to open up to the world around him. Maybe he even thinks: "If someone so bright and elfy can still be created in the sundered world, what else can it bring?" Or at least that's the hope. Well said! That's what I like about having a younger Lavellan (early twenties), as her youthful, wide-eyed, perspective stands in stark contrast to Solas' ancient, world-weary, attitude. But if Solas's ancient wisdom and age can't be matched isn't that true in regards to older Inquisitors as well? I mean, either way, regardless even of romance or not, Inquisitor still manages to inspire Solas and make him look at the world differently. And regardless of what age we choose for our Inquisitors, Flemeth in the Fade still calls Lavellan 'young and vibrant', because compared to the old farts the like of her or Solas, they ARE 'bright and elfy'. (with that said, if there was TOO much of a difference between them in terms of age - or more like mental age - the romance would probably be impossible.) He still has the same dialogue options and a choice to redeem him if Inquisitor manages to get a mere +1 of approval I think people may oversell a little how much Inquisitor affects Solas, in a sense that they don't have to do all the job of changing Solas's mind - because, buried deep underneath, there's still this romantic, hopeful sap that wants to care about people, even those from this strange, new, lopsided world.

I don't know, but I can't help but note that the name Shartan is... actually a bit awkward That's why you've got to put emphasis on the Shar part, so it doesn't sound like shart. I'm pretty sure it's just supposed to be a play on both the word charlatan and Satan, tho. Poor innocent David Gaider didn't know there was a double-entendre in the word "taint", either, when he was naming things in the DA Universe.

Poor innocent David Gaider didn't know there was a double-entendre in the word "taint", either, when he was naming things in the DA Universe. TBH, I can't help to imagine ridiculous, in-game scenarios of why Shartan was ever a thing. *a friend to Solas throwing ideas about the moniker*: "Dude, no... dude. Don't go with Shartan, unless you want Evanuris to ruin your image with endless shart jokes" *Solas, mortified*: "Oh damn... can we throw all the pamphlets printed yesterday? What a waste and I got them cheap too...!" *bro*: " Just... pray that nobody finds those and if they do, that they will attach this name to some other poor sap in the future..." Also, I can't help but to snicker at CerTAINTy, even if I know that it may show up in the future and should probably to be taken very seriously I supposed that the 'taint' part will not bring TOO much attention to itself, especially that one can see that they're trying to be careful with the word now, haha.

Learn something new every day and now I won't use either of those words in a conversation and then feel like an idiot when people are laughing at me. Edit: Ok I had to come back and say that I would actually never have used the word shart in a conversation. I didn't even know it *was* a word. Still at least if I hear someone else saying it I'll know what the hell they're talking about lol. And I won't have to ask any embarrassing questions. Years ago I had to ask a friend of mine in an MMO what "teabagging" was ... now THAT was an awkward conversation.

maybe came across as discounting No, not at all. You just made it glaringly obvious how much I exaggerated how fluffy it is when comparing modern standards, because actually living in Dragon Age as not one of the plot armored protagonists does suck pretty hard. Maybe it really is unusually happy for the such dark and draconian setting, like only one in a million people can have a childhood with that much happiness and so little terror. I guess it's the same really. What I mean is, I feel I told it wrong, because I kind of did. But if Solas's ancient wisdom and age can't be matched isn't that true in regards to older Inquisitors as well? Well...yeah...didn't really think of that. I guess Solas always considers the Inquisitor a child no matter who you play as. Maybe that's why having any approval at all will leave him open to the possibility to try and save him. Like, he is pretty harsh on the Dalish in the beginning, like that they are all ignorant and totally worthless kind of hate, and probably sees everyone, regardless of race or affiliation (well, except other ancient elves and spirits and maybe even still...) as naïve and childish so just having him not hate someone in the world is enough.

I don't think Solas views Inquisitor as a child - like I said: if there was such disparity between them in terms of age - or mental age - I don't think the romance would be possible at all, otherwise it would cross lines I don't think many would like to cross. I think he may be viewing Inquisitor as fairly immature or child-like IF they don't leave any sort of positive impression on him - but if Inquisitor befriends Solas and reaches the 'balcony scene' stage of relationship, Solas directly states that Inquisitor is wise and in a way he has not seen (*cough*)prior to shenanigans with the Veil or maybe earlier(*cough*). I don't think people realize how big of a compliment that is, especially given that he views most of his previous peers - the god-kings themselves - as greedy, tyrannical fools. His use of 'lethallan' further proves that he considers befriended Inkys as his peers, even if still ones bustling with youthful energy and hope, or not clued-in into this whole dire 'ancient-mysteries-and-end-of the-world' things as he or Mythal are.

Solas cleverly threw us off that last one by duplicating himself and pretending to be Solas. But plot twist! Even Solas is Solas. I'm Solas. You're Solas. Everyone's Solas and everyone's bald and we're all blind now because our heads are so shiny.

However, I don't think the idea that his nearly 1000 year old deeds have been intermingled with details from even older legends of a similar nature takes anything away from him. Its happened in real life legends often enough.
