Before I start saying anything thread-relevant I have to mention this; I celebrated a friend's birthday today, and at the party they had this game:



This game is like russian roulette but with Bertie Botts Jelly Beans from the Harry Potter books. I was initially fortunate and got to taste buttered popcorn and lime... and then I got one that tasted like REALLY sour milk. The taste was... yeah, Imagine accidentally drinking really old milk and then having it stick to your teeth. Can't remember last time I felt so nauseous (although the rum I drank to get rid of the taste didn't really help)!

So yes, more thread related stuff.

I intially picked the vallaslin of June for my Inquisitor, but her face came out all wrong and I decided to scrap her. The next Inky I made (my canon one) looked better with Mythal's vallaslin, so it was purely cosmetic reasons. I can in retrospect feel that Anduril would have been a better pick for her character, but what's done is done.

Also, looking at the old vallaslin from DAO I realized that there must be a reason for Elgar'nan's vallaslin to have half the face light and the other dark. Is it supposed to reflect how he defeated the sun and forced it to set every evening? Or is there another possible meaning?

Based on DAI's vallaslin, I'd say that the order for the last three should be;

Dirthamen, Ghilan'nain and Mythal.

The first being Dirthamen is because he is the keeper of secrets and this vallaslin features a book.
The second being Ghilan'nain is because it resembles Halla antlers and the simplified version matches the one from Inquisition (albeit much larger)
The third being Mythal's is the most difficult to say for certain, as it only vaguely resemble tree branches.

The third pattern does however feature a few interesting quirks that could make it Mythal's. The bottom "rung" of the branches we see above the eyes roughly resembles the shape of the crown that Flemeth and Mythal statues sport from DA2 onwards.

It's also the style of vallaslin worn by Merrill in DA2, which would serve as nice foreshadowing as she was instrumental in resurrecting Mythal in DA2. It makes the Flemeth's line "Do you know who I am, beyond that title?" even more hilarious in hindsight, as Merrill fails to recognise the very "goddess" who's sigil she has tattooed onto her face.

Hmm, I still think the pattern labeled as Mythal above is Mythal's.

*pulls on tinfoil *Partly because Flemeth's grimoire was an important clue to her connection with Mythal, and she's associated with wisdom and justice, and partly because I think that the central pillar and upper curlicues not only resemble branches, but the body and arms of a set of scales:

Also, in the one labeled Dirthamen I just can't get over the little ears that are on the halla head, so it makes me think it's got to be Ghilan'nain's, as the DA:I pattern has the little ears, too.

I'm already pretty deep in the weeds with this, but that's where I'm coming from. XD

 

The reason I say that different clans have different patterns is because I think this'd be consistent with the lore... it's said that as the clans drift apart, they become more different from each other, even in terms of their culture, so it'd make sense for the vallaslin to change as well.

Re: Elgar'nan: his full vallaslin could refer to day and night, or maybe sky and earth, as both are featured in his myth. _{Also, just look at all the ink, this must be painful to get.}

Re: Velanna's vallaslin: the top part looks like the old "Ghilan'nain" vallaslin, and the bottom one is just a flipped top-down element of the top one, so I'd say the has Ghilan'nain.

Re: Merrill's vallaslin: overall, if not looking at the elements, it reminds me of an over-simplified Mythal vallaslin. Otherwise yes, she has elements of Ghilan'nain, but Mythal would make sense story-wise?

I say we keep it!

Another musing about the Evanuris (damn it, I am almost on topic these days!). I found this codex entry on Anduril:



Now, the part I find especially interesting is the first part. Bear in mind that this is one of the codex entries found in the Arbor Wilds, so it should date back to around the time of the Evanuris. The part I want to discuss is the first sentence, where it is mentioned that she "grew tired of hunting mortal men and beasts". I thought Solas said all elves were immortal and that only ended with the creation of the Veil? So what mortal men were Anduril hunting? Is it possible that there were humans living in this part of Thedas at the same time? Or what other mortal men did she hunt? Dwarfs are usually not referred to as men, although she probably did fight them with Mythal and the others at one time. Any ideas, or am I over analyzing again?

I have to say I registered to the social network recently (read : this week) and reading the popup about the "brand new" awesome official forum to check out... was kinda painful

The elvhen didn't age but they could be killed, I think that's what they mean by being mortal. The Evanuris on the other hand, Solas clues you in had the secret of effective immortality, which is suggested to be stashing a part of your spirit in something else like say a dragon or a locket or an eluvian and being able to reform your body completely intact.
