If anything I think Solas has a different problem - he can't see himself being anything other than something negative, hence he has little hope for himself and considers him deserving of terrible punishment for his actions and hence why he's grim and fatalistic.I had to comment on this. If this is indeed true then Solas is....Bishop from NWN2? And just as damn frustrating in a relationship.

Oh... well, I liked him up until the point where it was revealed that he knew what Quentin was doing and turned into a harvester even though I was totally kicking the templars little asses... #WellShit The boss fight was added in because high ups wanted a fight there. Orsino never should've been fought on the mage path (and since you only get disapproval for questioning Varric about Orsino and it's confirmed in DAI he lied about a bunch of things I think that was made up). Also, he new Quentin was experimenting, but not how far he'd gone. He thought it was hypothetical. World of Thedas 2 gives a ton of context and backstory for Orsino, including that he'd spent years doing what he could to protect mages. He was a good man, and didn't deserve what happened to him. That angered me greatly. Still pisses me off. "Let's do something completely against character and add half assed last minute clues so it 'makes sense'. No one will ever know!"

ellawyn It was just for fun. I don't really put much faith into it either. Ugh, sorry, but these things just irk me. When people insist on reducing others to a few traits and putting them into boxes - which is literally what all personality quiz things are about. It's made even worse when the boxes have no real meaning themselves and people just read whatever they want into them. Like those descriptions are designed to be undetailed and universally applicable. Arguing about what "type" someone is, to me, like arguing if a zebra's black with white stripes or white with black stripes. No, they'll never describe people perfectly. Not even a whole book would. They can still lead to a lot of insight, not by being reductive but by telling you something about, in the case of MBTI, how outer behaviour relates to inner experience. And yes, things like this requires both honesty ('this fits me, that doesn't even though I wish it would') and a capacity for self-examination for them to be useful rather than just a fancy party topic, a crutch or even something used to avoid better understanding. Humans are complicated, and self-awareness is more often than not short on the ground. We need all the help we can get. If it's poetry or it's MBTI, I'm taking each crumb I can get that has some value in it.

Re: MBTI:
I am aware that any attempt at categorization is going to be inherently flawed. Though in my case, MBTI ended up helping me in a way. I'm an introvert; the world values extrovercy. I'm a dreamer; the world values those who act and act sensibly. I'm emotional, the world values logic. So finding something as simple as a personality test that stated that all people are different and that there's nothing "wrong" with them because of that had an effect on me.
This said, I believe that each person is ultimately unique... but it seemed like a fun little exercise, which is why I asked.
Back to Solas... I do believe he's a Feeler because all he does, he does because of his emotions. He tries to justify his actions with logic, but it's pretty clear he doesn't really think things through or think ahead. Yes, he can be rational when he wants to, but the bulk of his decisions is done via emotions nonetheless.
And introverts can be pretty aloof around people they don't know well. And Solas has a reason to try and stay away from everyone to boot. Yet he obviously still cares. He has a pretty clear inner conflict between what he wants to do and what he thinks he should do, and being in a state of constant war with oneself will make anyone a bit snappy... then there's the fact that he can't talk about it to anyone because no one understands. The break up scene showed just how much he's hurt by said lack of trust and understanding; so much that he's willing to break it up himself rather then telling the truth and risking Lav doing it herself later. He's self-destructive this way, in that he wants to trust, but is to hurt and feels too guilty to do so at the same time, and when he does act on his feelings, he ends up blaming himself for it later, adding to the pile.
So, yes, over the course of DAI, he's under so much stress and need to act in a certain way that typing him "right" is difficult.

Solas is the iceberg, of course OK, but if Solas is the iceberg, who's steering the ship into the iceberg? Lavellan, obviously. Going to get that ass. ...We laugh, but this is a strangely apt metaphor for the entire romance. Solas is the iceberg! Lavellan is the captain! Thedas is the ship!

About Orsino, that was just lazy writing and I hope they learned from the reaction to it. They used exactly the same cinematic of the Templars breaking into the Gallows as they did for the Templar run, yet according to what we were doing in the game, Orsino had gathered us together with the mages in order to fight them off together. Which is why it made so little sense. There was I constantly putting myself and my party between the Templars and the mages and when we had killed them all, the mages with us were all still alive. We even saw then running away when Orsino went crazy. Yet they show him surrounded by dead mages and giving way to despair. That was why it had me screaming at the writers for the ridiculousness of the situation.
If they had wanted to make even a modicum of sense, they should have had Orsino saying, "I'll go one way and you go the other and we'll meet back at X". Then have you take exactly the same path as the Templar run, so you don't get to Orsino until the end. Then him being surrounded by dead mages and going nuts would have seemed more reasonable, particularly if Meredith was standing there in front of him and he was simply out for revenge on her but you just stumbled into it too late to prevent a tragedy.
They say they run ideas past the whole team but I can't believe they did with that one and no one had the guts to say "that's just illogical, the players are going to hate it".
If they do anything like that with Solas, well it doesn't bear thinking about. However, PW did write Mordin Solus' story and for me that was one of the high points of ME3, even though it was incredibly sad. He'd done something terrible in the past but he admitted his mistake and fixed it in the noblest way possible, destroying no one but himself in order to bring new life and hope. (There were other ways it could end of course that were rather less noble but not on my play through).

(There were other ways it could end of course that were rather less noble but not on my play through). I had Padok Wiks in ME3 (whom I assume Patrick also wrote?) and it still managed to be very well done to me. Even if he was just a character for that game, he still felt like a full fledged character and his motivations and everything were handled well. Regardless of the fact that a lot of people would avoid seeing him, there was real effort put in. I was thinking about removing it but i just can't get him denied from his fun, and it's harmless except to the eye lol And to Solas' nose, but it just goes to show the lengths he's willing to go for a cause. Thanks for the nice words ♥ - Gnhgng I just found this from GDL-the-VA's band and i post it in case some new folks haven't heard of it yet It fits way too well imDying.jpg → Full versionWow, he even read that in his Solas voice. I mean, yes, its his own speaking voice, but the angst level he puts in makes it sound like Solas. They should let him write something for Solas to "read" in DA4. Or just this.

Morning guys, So on the subject of MBTI. I like and quite enjoy personality typing (including MBTI) and related subjects like personality psychology. I don't actually put much stock in personality typing systems, just a little. They aren't much better than astrology (which I put zero stock in, but is fun to think about) - at least with ptyping systems the label you get (type, type profile) is based on something which makes sense like your personality traits rather than on something which has no impact on how a person behaves/thinks, like their date of birth. there are obviously a bunch of issues with ptyping in a general sense; generalizations, stereotypes, oversimplification, the Forer Effect, user error, misapplication, taking it as gospel, etc. not to mention, different ptyping systems also each have their own system-unique flaws and limitations. as an example with mbti you might point to misuses of jung's ideas or lack of scientific basis. still though, if you keep those things in mind and don't take it too seriously.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ for me ptying and ptyping systems = neat (even valuable) tools, thought exercises. it's not about 'this type fits me, it explains everything about me and how I am, omg, the revelations, this explains everything about why my friend Sam is the way he is too!'. it's more like, in order to type myself in a system, I'm forced to think about my personality and personality traits (and depending on system, more stuff like core motivations or how I process information, etc) - identify what they are, to what extent I have them, stuff like that. which type/type profile fits best? why? what parts of it fit well and what don't? even when points from a profile don't fit, I gain some knowledge. thus from the required self-reflection to answer these questions, in this sense I gain insight into myself (including my flaws/weaknesses/areas I can work on), and potentially other people. so in that way if you do it like that, it goes beyond a couple quick online tests. I also gain knowledge about personality psychology and scientific ideas, because they are floating around in there somewhere - even if it's just reading a paper on why MBTI is flawed/total garbage! that teaches me and makes me think too. a further thing: ptyping can also be a useful tool when it comes to discussing fictional characters (personality analysis, facilitating discussion and exchange of perspectives on a character, and so on), and writing/RP/developing fictional characters. especially since fictional characters are inevitably nowhere near as complex and layered as real people. I also just plain like reading about it and personality psych, discussions, comparing different systems (flaws and positives of each), seeing how different types in different systems might correlate, etc. it's also pretty common (human) in a way to enjoy categorizing things, labelling systems, etc. look at taxonomy. long as everyone bears in mind the obvious caveats and limitations, it's just a bit of fun, and maybe a learning tool. certainly since I got into this stuff years ago I gained much better self-awareness such that it even helped me express what my strengths and weaknesses are in RL areas where it matters, like jobhunting. i hope this makes sense.
