Sonofa.. I already have it on disk, Steam and GoG. Why must they do this to my wallet? *drifts back to the fond memories of getting ninjamanced by Sky while doing her best to get into Sagacious Zu's breeches"

Hi there, I was over copying some elvish from the Wiki that I hadn't done before, one of which was Fen'Harel's secret greeting from Trespasser. I don't often get this in my play throughs as I don't drink from the Well. Now the Wiki says that the translation for this greeting is unknown but something struck me when looking at the last part: "Revas vir-anaris". Revas is freedom, vir is way or path but anaris (with a capital A) is the name of one of the Forgotten Ones. So the text is essentially "Freedom by way of Anaris." Names often seem to have a meaning, like Solas being Pride, so I wonder what anaris means? Whilst people may argue that the Forgotten Ones may not be as bad as the Dalish say, this seems disproved by the actions of the elves of the Tirashan, who appear to still worship them. So I wouldn't have thought that "anaris" means anything good if that is the case. Considering that Solas's (or Abelas') name isn't just a personal name, but a name for a concept, it's not hard to argue that the greeting doesn't refer to a person, but some sort of idea that may or may not have little to do with Forgotten Anaris. Now... where did you get any indication that Tirashan elves worship forgotten gods? Did I miss something?? So far it seems all we know is that they wear strange red vallaslin and that they're hostile to people living at the edges of Tirashan. There's nothing I know of that suggests Tirashan elves worship Forgotten ones, Evanuris, Fen'Harel or whoever else (doubtful in case of Fen'Harel, since his whole schtick was removing vallaslin and not making people wear it... but the truth is we don't even know if those are ancient elves and if they are - if they aren't some sort of crazed sect that during millenias has built some sort of sinister mythology around Fen'Harel and his rebellion). The only clues we have are elven grafitti scattered throughout landscape in DAI - same elven grafitti we later see all over Fen'Harel's sanctuary. This seems to suggest that at least portion of them seems to depict Fen'Harel's rebellion and war with Evanuris. Coincidentally the first one depicts 'hollowed out' elves (figures with holes where heart and mind is) bearing red vallaslin, seemingly enslaved - and the ones we know who were described as 'enslaving thousands' were the Evanuris. Here's the entry about the Tirashan elves. It's from Dragon Age: The Last Court, which is available to play on Dragon Age Keep: dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Sylvan_RaidsIt doesn't specifically mention the Forgotten Ones, except in the title, only that the gods that the elves cry out to are not the standard Dalish Pantheon.

Yeah, vhenan is supposed to be a term of endearment, "my heart" is a literal translation (I think "ma" is supposed to mean "you" but I could be wrong)

So...much...lore. I don't know how anyone keeps any of it straight. I'm pretty sure they have an internal wiki (in fact I could swear I've heard its existence being confirmed by either writers or BW editors, likely in "You Need An Editor" GDC video), if not actual loremaster.

Yeah, vhenan is supposed to be a term of endearment, "my heart" is a literal translation (I think "ma" is supposed to mean "you" but I could be wrong) "Ma" is used interchangeably for both "you" and "me," I believe. Examples: "Ar lath ma, vhenan" means "I love you, heart" and "Ma nuvenin" means "As you wish." But then you have "Ma ghilana mir din'an," which is "Guide me into death," "Ara seranna-ma," which means "Excuse me," and "Ma halani" which means "Help me." Elves and their double-speak.

IS the "My" implied in the context use of the word, and therefore, you're like. saying, "My my heart"? Ah jeez I just saw a discussion about this on Tumblr. "Ma" is alternatively used to mean "You" and "Me." The phrase "Ma harel" means "You lie" but the phrase "Ma Serannas" means "My Thanks" and the phrase "Ghilana ma" means "Guide me." I'm pretty sure it's also been used to mean "your," I think that translation comes from the end of Trespasser if a romanced Lavellan takes the angry option with Solas, and she says something like "Your advice was a lie" with "ma" to mean "your." But I might be misremembering. "Emma" is also used as a word meaning possession - "Emma lath" is used to mean "my love." But "emma" has also been used to mean "within." I think this screenshot sums it up: I believe it was said somewhere that Elvhen is a pretty messy conlang, developed to sound very lyrical and not to make a lot of sense or, you know, actually function. To the point where people in-universe recognize Elvhen as a clunky, nonsensical language that's basically impossible to translate without first knowing what's being said (Which kinda defeats the purpose of reading it to begin with.). Gotta wonder why people even try. I'm pretty sure the writers are just sort of making it up as they go - I'd be surprised if they have a fully fleshed out dictionary, much less a functioning grammar system. Which, hey, that's kind of understandable. Fabricating a fully functional language is hard - it's why a lot of fiction goes with cypher languages, which is just English (Or whatever the work's native tongue is) with the words swapped out - and doesn't have a whole lot of payoff in the end. There's not a lot of incentive to make it a usable language, although I do wish the writers would put out translations of what they had a character say (Even if said translation contradicts what we already know.) Basically it's welcome to the Elvhen language: where the grammar's made up and the definitions don't matter.

Haha, but there are more ways of 'making' people than merely procreating. A good parent, a good teacher can help shape a child for a successful future. A bully can shape a child in negative ways, even harrying them to the end of all their potential. As the old saying goes "It takes a village to raise a child". And I'm pretty sure that's what Solas actually was referring to.

Sadly, my Lavellan's parents probably died in Wycome, so she will have no such parental mindblowing moments.
Also, as a person who is 41 years old, I can honestly say that I don't really feel any older mentally or emotionally than I was when I was in my mid-late 20s. So I like to think that Solas' age doesn't really set him so far apart from Lavellan.
His traumatic experiences though... therein the difference lies. Poor Solas.

Hi all! So I was listening to the Lost Elf theme last night and got The Feels™ and this happened. Solas isn't in this one, but I feel like it's still sort of relevant? Post-trespasser Lavellan grew her hair out and wants her idiot doggy boyfriend back.

The Dalish elders' reflections on Zathrian and what it must be like to outlive all your contemporaries is very pertinent to Solas, given how old he is.
"It can be argued that an immortal would have to be distant, or eventually all it would know is loss. What would our world look like to such a creature? What actions would they be capable of when everything except themselves is fleeting and therefore of little relevance to eternity? If we as elvhen discover a path back to what we were, we must be sure that the path is wide enough for all. For the individual who stumbles into that journey, who endures when all else is dust, can only be alone."
Solas' greatest fear is dying alone. I think it is easier to see why he currently views things as he does when you consider how few of those in the current world can be considered "immortal" and all of them are ancient elves. I imagine he would feel that everyone else is going to die within a few years anyway, including Lavellan, whether he tears down the Veil or not, but if he doesn't take this action, then his fellow ancient ones will perish too, leaving him truly alone.
