Sleep calls but before I go might as well throw in another topic and stir the pot! Since new protagonist was mentioned and the title of Dread Wolf was tossed in too, how about this for a discussion: How does our DA4 PC get through the mask of Fen'Harel to make a connection (romantically but if friendship is preferred go with that instead) with Solas the man? Can it be done, would they even be tolerated to the point that the PC could reach that level? Hard to say. If you are an ancient elf you might only see a God. If you are a modern elf on his side you would pretty much see the second coming of Jesus. If you were a modern elf who wasn't on his side you might either see Satan or Hitler. So it doesn't matter which kind of protagonist you play. Also, I think Solas would be a bit more closed off if he befriended the Quizz and see that the modern people have worth. He would try to think of his task and only his task.

If DA4 does Inquisiton's four backstories for four different species I find it likely the elf option, if set in Tevinter, will be an ex-slave. Or if DA4 goes back to its Origin routes *prays to the Creators* and does the separate Origin beginning, I'd think an elf that is escaping slavery, to be a former slave by the time the origin met the rest of the story.

Doubt it, since I think it would be hard to role play an ancient elf. We don't really know what it was like to live as an elf in ancient times. The only way I can see it, is if you were a child during that time and went with your parents into the sleeping time capsule. You were raised in the modern era, but were raised on your parents accurate stories of ancient times. Or, we actually do have an ancient elf origin story that shows at least a glimpse into what the world use to be like. That would be awesome. But I'm still in the camp that's praying that the Inquisitor will be the next protag.

She's a sentinel who was injured right before Alrlathan fell and has amnesia. I'm in the same camp as you about the Inky. So did she get amnesia after she got out of the sleeping time capsule or before it?

GUYZ On the twitter thread : My heeeaaarrrrttt Oh Patrick Weekes. Well, at least they still remember Solavellan is a thing! Never let them forget Solavellan. NEVER. I have decided that I'm going to assume it is all reverse psychology and that this is proof that we will have a happy ending for solavellan! You see, I thought that when they were all talking about crying over Trespasser. I tweeted something at them about my expecting sunshine and lollipops. Weekes liked the asinine tweet, then we ended up receiving a lovely basket full of dinan'shiral and fan tears. They are too tricky to use simple reverse psychology, methinks, but they can't keep piling on the tragedy. That's too predictable. Keep the faith, y'all. Wave that Team Optimism flag high! Yeah that could mean anything, it doesn't have to be the final destruction of our collective hearts... (on a giant banner for team optimism!) I'm with you!!!

I kind of feel that the relationship between a Lavellan and Solas is a bit more special then one with Solas and DA:4 protag who works for him. For Lavellan, Solas was just Solas, but for the DA:4 protag Solas might not be Solas, he would be the Dread Wolf, he would be his title. They could get past that title, but the title would be the first thing anyone sees. This kind of reminds me of what I argued on the old forum, where my Lavellan wouldn't really date anyone else because at this point no one would see behind the title of Inquisitor, Herald of Andraste. Even Varric admits that he has a hard time seeing the Inquisitor as a person and not some symbol. Lavellan and Solas never saw each other as symbols, just people. This^ That's what makes the Solas-Lavellan thing special. Of all the people alive in Thedas these two are the only ones who can really relate to the other. They each lost themselves to a cause, and in each other are reminded of who they truly are under the armor and beyond the titles. [insert sappy violin music]

Stray thoughts... Say we do have a new protagonist in DA4, who knows right away that they'd role an elf (if it's an option) for their first playthrough? I think there's too much going on storywise for me not to choose an elf, just like I always play a mage on my first playthrough. Of course anything can happen from now to then.
You know, we're given this whole lesson about big organizations inevitably having spies, Solas and the Qumari (and probably others) riddling your Inquisition with their spiders, but does that mean we'll get the opportunity to do the same back to them. Solas seems to be forming quite the collection of elves. How difficult would it be to throw in some not-end-of-the-known-world loyalist elf spies with the rest of his lot? For example (won't happen because it's too choice specific) Tabris gets cousin Soris to join the elf-y cause so she can keep tabs. Other elves- Zevran or...Fenris would stand out like a sore thumb...Merrill... would make a horrible spy and she's infamous because of Varric's book. We don't befriend a lot of elves in these games, do we?
Sera, Sera... I'm not on board for the Andruil theory, but what's up with Sera. There's some foreshadowing of something there.
Do you think more spirit Cole went to find Solas? The huge difference in decisions for him make me assume he's not going to play much of a role or get much of a mention in DA4.
Also, is there no like limit!!! THIS IS THE GREATEST DISCOVERY IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND!!!

I think Sola's talks with her has more to do with the writers showing that elves are different beyond the whole pointy ears. I think that Cole might appear, or at least get cameo. It wouldn't be that much effort compared to Morrigan's child. Also, while I may play an elf in the next DA game, I think the next installment gives me a compelling story related reason to play a human. If you are an elf and if Solas is (or you at least think Solas will) really will bring back the world of the elves, is there really a compelling reason to go against him? Your whole life you have been abused by humans, so why would you want to save their empire? If anything, you would want to see it finally fall on their heads. If you're a human you have more of an incentive to want to save the human empires and the veil world.

Solas: It is an earnest question. What color is the sky when you look at it? Sera: You know, blue mostly. Except for the Breachy bits. Solas: And when you looked past the Breach? As perhaps you were drawn to do? Sera: Greenish? Then clear a long ways, and kind of...felt like falling. Sera: Ugh! Makes my head hurt. You make my head hurt. Solas: We are not so far apart, you and I. Sera: We will be. Granted, your Lavellan may have had the same reaction, but then there's also this: Sera: (shivers) Weird. Solas: Sera? What are you feeling? Sera: Ugh, here we go. It’s nothing, it just feels like I've seen this. Exactly this. It happens. Solas: Not to everyone. (If Inquisitor is an elf) Sera: It’s not an elf thing. Inquisitor's not shaking. And I will reply to the other part of your comment shortly, I need to get back onto my computer. This site is hard to navigate on a mobile device!

Inquisitor's not shaking. And I will reply to the other part of your comment shortly, I need to get back onto my computer. This site is hard to navigate on a mobile device! I hope not. I really don't want to see Sera again. I did not initially like Sera very much myself. She grew on me though, like a fungus I find her incredibly hypocritical and there are few moments where I wished I could take complete control of my character and add in some dialogue as much as I did than when listening to Sera prattle about magic this or Cole that or elves, ew. But, she's sincere in her efforts to help the little people and her friendships with Blackwall, The Iron Bull, and Dorian made her a lot more likable as a character for me. *** And for the second part of your original comment, yes, I think there's a lot of compelling reasons to go against him. Now obviously this is all speculation, but depending on how Solas is trying to sell his Elftacular deal, I don't think he'll get the continent changing following that some might think he would. There are four main different types of elves in Thedas. City elves, slaves, Dalish, and Circle/exCircle elves. I don't doubt prejudice effects all of them to an extent, but Solas, or at least Fen'Harel has a lot going against him. The Dalish are incredibly stubborn, it's practically their defining trait. Solas has already admitted he's dealt with Dalish prejudice and if he reveals himself as their trickster god who trapped their gods away from them? It's not what really happened, but I can't imagine it would be easy to convince the Dalish as a whole otherwise. Maybe he'll go, or send agents to the next Arlathvhen to try to collect a following and maybe he'll succeed, but changing the minds of thousands(?) about thousands of years of their perceived history and their traditions. That won't be an easy feat. Fen'Harel would also have to contend with most of Thedas being Andrastian. By virtue of what he is, he's going to get a lot of hate from faithful Andrastians all across Thedas. It might be easy to imagine that many city elves might shun the faith as it keeps members of their race out of its Chantry and it doesn't acknowledge Shartan, but for the downtrodden and suppressed, faith is often revealed to be a great comfort. You like to know you're suffering for a reason and that there's an end to said suffering. A lot of people, elves included, are prejudiced against magic. Even for people that aren't, the Veil going down can't seem like an okay idea for most of them. That's all they've ever known. The world state could provide two recent elven heroes that don't (I'm speaking for all Wardens because I doubt BioWare will allow the Warden to support Solas) support Solas. Mahariel or Tabris and Lavellan. It could also provide a Divine that's pushing for real change for the elves and or an elven noble making changes. Many elves could see this opportunity for what it might be, and they could realize that a failed elven rebellion could set all their progress back. Depending on your origin you (as an elf) could have both positive and negative experiences with humans. We don't know if the elf origin will be something where you blatantly were abused by humans your entire life. I hope for an escaped slave origin for the elf, but what if you have an elf-blooded sibling or a friend that is a human slave or maybe a human helped you escape? And even if you started an origin like Mahariel or Tabris, without a good opinion of humans, how soon would it be until you meet your incredibly diverse group of companions. And of course this is all assuming that the modern elves will benefit from Solas's plans, which I find doubtful and it depends on what story Solas weaves and how many followers he wants. If he doesn't need x amount of people for y plan, I don't think it fits his personality to want an excess of groupies, especially if it's going to end in a lot of hurt for them.

I completely agree, it'd be interesting to play as an andrastian human who knows nothing about elf lore and is confused about who's this random elf a-hole who's trying to destroy the world! As an elf it might feel forced, maybe it could work with an andrastian or agnostic city elf like Sera who relates more to humans but it still feels like a bit of a stretch (IMO anyway)

It's strange seeing you (your profile picture) as a redhead, CapricornSun. What happened to your black haired beauty? Is this new one (new for me, I have no idea how long you've been using her) another Lavellan? As always, thanks for the art post!

The reason why my Lavellan wouldn't support Solas in his plans are several and these are some of the ones he made to the Arlathven
Solas made it clear that everyone was going to die, including his family and friends. So even if you are going to get some second hand revenge on your ancient oppressors, you are not going to be there to enjoy it. As Dorian said to Cullen, to take everyone with you, friend and foe, when you think you are going to die anyway, is thinking like a blood mage.
The Dalish no longer have a homeland but as nomads, essentially the whole of Thedas is their home. That means the whole ecological system, the mountains, forests, rivers and seas and all the plants and animals that inhabit it. The Dalish revere the natural world, so naturally they should want to defend it. This is the world that they know, not the magical memory world of crystal walkways and prismatic towers. According to their belief system, the natural world was created by their gods for their benefit and Elgar'nan was furious with the sun when he destroyed it in the past. Solas is essentially taking the place of the sun.
They only have Solas' version of history to contradict their own. He made no mention of the Forgotten Ones, although at least one of them, Gelduran, seems to have very similar views to Solas. The Dalish believe that not just the Creators but also the Forgotten Ones were shut away. Why would they want them back? What if the Creators are dead and only the Forgotten Ones survived? What if they aided Solas or tricked him in the past?
They believe Fen'Harel to be a trickster who cares for no one but himself. Nothing in Lavellan's experience has actually shown him to be anything different. He betrayed his friendship and Solas admitted he has sacrificed other friends in order to achieve his plans. Lavellan knows about Felassan from Cole. He was sacrificed because he thought modern elves were people. Why would they want to support someone who doesn't see them as people?
Abelas is an ancient elf who dismissed modern elves out of hand as not his people but recognised Solas as one of his own. Therefore it would seem the only people who will benefit from his plan are those who have spent the last several thousand years ignoring the plight of their own descendants (where else did modern elves come from?) when they could have helped them. How does that make them any different from their human oppressors? They still have a callous non concern for their welfare. Even if the modern elves were to survive, what is to stop them simply being made slaves again?
If Solas' agents try to recruit modern elves from the alienages and slaves from the Imperium, they are going to have to lie to them about the benefits of supporting him. Otherwise, many of the objections that Lavellan makes would apply equally to them. Most of the traditions of the Dalish were originally passed down to them over the years by their slave forebears. So both city elves and slaves would have stories of Fen'Harel and his tricks which would make them wary of trusting him, even if they believed that he was really the Dread Wolf and not simply some insane elf with delusions of grandeur.
I do hope that they don't make Solas and his followers the champions of freedom in the next game, with us compelled to oppose them in order to save the world because I am getting a little tired of the social reformers always being on the wrong side. I want to be a freedom fighter but who is also fighting to save the world but not the corrupt political systems. I don't believe that it is inevitable that every organisation will end up being corrupt.
I want to play an elf next game specifically so there is at least one elf opposing Fen'Harel and to keep my people (Dalish, city elves and slaves) out of the clutches of both the Dread Wolf and the Qun. If I'm finally allowed to earn a lasting boon of freedom and even a new sanctuary for my people, so much the better.

As for my avatar, she's my D&D wood elf ranger/beast master, Leena Tornala. Let's just say I've been on a D&D kick these past few months. She has been my avatar since we all first moved and settled here as our new home. Of course, I still love my Lavellan to bits. It's just that Leena has been receiving a lot of love from me lately.

gervaise21 Pretty much what you said, with one more reason for me - I believe that Solas knows fuck all about what he's doing. Just look at his previous attempts. Raised the Veil? Screwed his people. Gave his orb to Corypheus? An ancient darkspawn nearly destroys the world. Not what I would call a trail of successes. I think he should leave saving the world to someone else, before he screws up even further. Nice of him to warn us about the Qunari warmongering. Although, looking from his point of view, that too may come back and bite him in that finely shaped butt. I hope to hell there's a dialogue option for the next protagonist akin to: "So, how'd that work out for you?" after a thorough curb stomping. I'd pick that even with Lavellan, 'cause she sure deserves some gloating.

The warning about the Qun wasn't altruistic. For a start off he hates the Qun with a vengeance, so he wouldn't want them to succeed on principle. Plus the specific plan of the Viddasala was to try and strengthen the Veil, making it more difficult for magic to get through. Naturally Solas would want to stop that. Lastly, giving the south a respite from the Qun makes him feel a bit better about his genocide (if they must die, let them die in peace). If letting the Qun succeed would have aided his plan, he might have let it go ahead. Instead he has directed them back to Tevinter. Naturally he doesn't like Tevinter because of the slavery but I'm guessing that it probably aids his plans too. Whilst Tevinter is otherwise engaged, his agents are going to be busy doing something on his behalf. My best guess at present is that they are going to be looking for one of those foci that Dorian mentioned seeing in old pictures.

Oh, that's cool! She looks really good Did you draw (create) her yourself? On a more Solas related note, while I think there's plenty of reasons not to blindly follow him (at least for the average modern elf), it will be interesting to see how much freedom we'd have to mix up our different DA4 protagonists views on the whole situation. Will we be able to sympathize with the cause or blame all elves for what's happening? Saying it's a new protagonist that is. Well, I guess the previous Inquisitor could have those feelings too, although they'd probably end up with an arrow to the face if they decided to blame all elves.

Genuine question this time: Did anyone's Lavellan break up with Solas at Trespasser, after finding out the truth about him?

Oh, I didn't mean any altruism on his part, just an example of one of his "best laid plans". Seriously, the man is a fail whale. He's like the Anakin of DA universe. Wait... shit.. I take that back.
