I would welcome refinement as in the Qunari not looking like fat cows and the elves not being anorexic. Weight change isn't that hard to do, I'm sure. Every time someone says "this isn't difficult to program in games" a game developer takes a shot. Oh, it's not just game developers, haha. There's a reason why software teams always have a keg onsite. Usually several. (the actual reason is "because coding while hammered is weirdly effective", but who's counting?)

Wait, are you saying the Inquisitor can be so bad that Varric actually leaves? I thought that wasn't possible. The Cole quest must be radically different in that case, even to having a completely different cut scene. That's why I thought it was tied to Varric and Solas because neither of them will leave. I was thinking the same thing. I thought neither Varric nor Solas can/would leave the inquisition arvaarad: who is helping Cole with getting more human, if Varric is away?

I disagree with Varric when he complains that Cole "could have been a person" after you decide to keep him as a spirit. After all, spirits are people too. And truth be told, this "Cole" identity is nothing more than a coping mechanism to deal with the failure to save the original boy. It makes more sense to let go of that and fully embrace who he truly is: The Compassion spirit.

Looking up disapproval videos, I think you guys are right, and Varric can't leave. Now I'm wondering if the banter I heard was cut, or if there's some other way to keep Varric from participating in Cole's quest. I really want to see the outcome mentioned in the banter, if it's possible to reach. My canon protagonists specialize in weird world states.

You know that moment when Solas says "They killed Mythal (chuckles). A crime for which an eternity of torment is the only fitting punishment"?
One can notice the anger mixed in the laughter. Conveying opposite emotions together like that takes some skill. Gareth David-Lloyd truly did an incredible job.

Conveying opposite emotions together like that takes some skill. Gareth David-Lloyd truly did an incredible job. You know, I just now realised that Solas is voiced by Gareth David Jones, whom I like from Torchwood (he played Ianto Jones, my favorite character) - I knew, I know that voice and I always wanted to look Solas voice actor up, but always forgot after playing. That is the second actor from Torchwood, voicing an elf in Dragon Age. The first one was Eve Myles, who did a great job with Merrill in DA2. arvaarad : Do you have a link to that video? Now, I'm curious. I always liked that quest for Cole, because Solas and Varric are the fitting characters to debate how to help Cole. They both bring strong agruments and as much as I like the otehr companions, I don't think, any of them could have really helped and understand Cole, like Solas and/or Varric did. I do think, that Dorian might have give it a serious try, but I'm not sure, if he could have managed to make Cole more stable either way, like Solas or Varric did.

I do think, that Dorian might have give it a serious try, but I'm not sure, if he could have managed to make Cole more stable either way, like Solas or Varric did. It was one of the big combined banter videos. The ones where they group all the different branches next to each other. Excuse my paraphrasing, I don't remember the exact words: Cole said something like "I forgave him" and I was like "ah yes, the spirit path" then he said something like "I'm not sure I could ever forgive him" and I thought "ah, the human path, yes, now it's time for the next piece of bant-" and then he said a third thing. I'm not sure if the third thing is actually in the game. Maybe it was recorded for a situation where Varric could leave, and later they decided Varric would stay. But sweet Maker, if it's in the game, I want to find it. My protagonists have all kinds of weird world states between them. My canon warden saved the mages but killed Wynne in the tower. My canon Hawke sent Anders out of Kirkwall at the beginning of Act 2 (yes, you can do that! I thought it would just increase his disapproval! It adds totally unique dialogue in the end sequence, too). I love hitting the edge cases. The devs really think of everything.

I try to experiment a bit on later playthroughs. They are never my canon PCs but it is interesting going against type, although I can never find it in myself to be really evil. Even so, my against type human mage in DAI, who was loved by Vivienne and allied with the Templars, so disgusted me eventually that I couldn't finish the run. The weird thing was, though, that Solas still respected him. I don't know how I managed that. I suppose it is just that there are certain things that I just can't bring myself to do and also it was out of character for my mage not to talk to him.
I was surprised that I was able to ask Anders to leave because all my early games he kept on being my friend, even if I started doing things he didn't like, because of the stupid lock in that occurs, after which you can't alter their opinion of you. So one game I decided I would deliberately try and rival him with my mage Hawke. I mostly did it by being aggressive and constantly telling him he was an idiot for becoming possessed. Then, completely in character, I told him to get lost in Act 2.

I was trying to remember all the little stories that Solas tells you when you go to speak to him in Skyhold, either places he has seen in the Fade or visited in real life. Would someone be kind enough to list them or tell me where to go to find them? So far I can recall:
The Avvar/Alaamari and the Shadow Goddess. The remains of Barindur. (Did he mention where that was?) The ring of dwarves around a child. (Again did he mention where that was apart from on the surface?) The Matchmaker spirit The Baker in Par Vollen Flemeth's Hut

(I play a mage Hawke, so I won't even lose the heals. lol) And on the general topic of how awesome Gareth's voice acting is, I agree 100%! *Especially* in that Trespasser conversation. Gareth's narration is the only reason I've ever audioread(?) the Call of Cthulu. Just something about his voice. Man, I really hope we see a lot of Solas in DA4. Like, I think I'd like him to be a background plot, but also very present. The chessmaster behind the scenes, but still have a ton of lines. I'm not hard to please, you are.I was trying to remember all the little stories that Solas tells you when you go to speak to him in Skyhold, either places he has seen in the Fade or visited in real life. The Matchmaker spirit The Baker in Par Vollen Flemeth's Hut I thought the dwarves was in the deep roads, not the surface. I could be wrong, though. I honestly don't know if he specified. Is the Avvar/Alamarri thing you are thinking of the one where he mentions the barbarians chanting a war song? Or is that a separate one? I think he also mentions seeing Val Royeaux (or maybe just Orlais) as it was in the past? I remember something about mud and huts, I think? I dunno. For some reason the Baker one always sticks out the most to me. I like stories of everyday people rebelling against totalitarianism. Well, that and Solas saying that the spiders are "usually" content to live and let live. There's a story there that's akin to when he sets his pants on fire, I'm sure, but we'll never hear it. :/

About the stories: The chanting barbarians stick out, becuase I love music and always try to imagine, how they could have sound. I think they are different from the Almarri story I was a bit surprised about teh spiders too. When he first mentioned that , I was like 'yay, I will get a pet spider' - you know, instead of the Mabari, but then they just attacked me. Should have asked Solas for his secret spider food recipe

That Hawke was pretty much fully rivalled with him. Don't know if that's necessary, but adding it just in case. 2. Option appears in the clinic conversation after Anders almost kills that mage woman, IIRC. Not 100% sure on that, but I know it's some quest that can be done shockingly early. 3. Surprisingly, combat is easier without a healer. Of all the things I loved about that run, I'm happy it forced me to try no-healer combat, because I found out I loved it! You can play a healer for RP reasons of course, but you'll be fine even if you go blood+force mage.

I know somewhere in this thread there was a discussion of how DAI's Minaeve seems to have put the lie to DA2's Merrill's explanation of what Dalish clans do with excess mage children. And this has in turn been suggested to be "bad writing/editing" on the devs' part. But, to flesh out my Solas conversation and cutscenes transcript, I have started a new playthrough as a Lady Lavellan. In the first conversation with Minaeve, when she wishes Fen'Harel would take the Dalish because they dumped her when she was 7 years old, if you choose the third response, your Lavellan states "My clan never did that. We sent those gifted with magic to another clan, or..." So anyway, both ways of dispersing mages are apparently canon for different Dalish clans, and both ways were accounted for by the devs. (And I do wonder if across Haven, Solas' ears are burning when Minaeve cusses out the Dalish? )

Obviously the Dalish different between one another, which is entirely unsurprising given how scattered they are. But yeah, that's about as much as I can muster right now when it comes to lengthy discussion about the topic xD;

It occurs to me that the ancient elves were a ridiculously polite people. Solas tells Vivienne that the greatest curse of his people is "dirthara-ma", which means "May you learn".
Really? That is the worst insult they had? Huh. That's pretty tame. What is wrong with "You are uglier than a Sloth demon"?

Well, they were probably polite in their curses but apparently fireball happy when they cannot reach an agreement lol. Like that one time where architects of Sylaise can't agree on each other on deciding the right color of glass to adorn a building they made in honor of June XD.. (tresspasser codex, iirc)

Seems harmless until you really think about it. "Interesting" times are generally not peaceful. They are characterized by strife, war, injustice. Knowing what we know so far about the world of the ancient elves, complete with slavery, a small elite class grabbing for more and more power, corruption and great betrayal, telling someone "May you learn" could have very negative connotations indeed.
