I don't think that's a fair judgement of his choice not to divulge the whole truth to the Inquisitor. Wanting to keep the darker aspects of yourself from a loved one, while ultimately it may be selfish, doesn't mean you don't genuinely love them. It's just one of those stupid story contrivances. And even Solas choosing duty over his love doesn't make the love less. I would say that Solas doesn't want to share the whole truth with the Inquisitor partly because he doesn't want them to give the fuel to change his mind, but mostly because he's ashamed. Does that mean he really doesn't love Lavellan? Because he doesn't want her to see the worst of him? The lack of respect thing, I could see a better argument for, but only in his leaving the Inquisition originally without giving the Inquisitor any notice or goodbye, but not because he refuses to tell the Inquisitor exactly how he's going to destroy modern Thedas. And for elf Inquisitors that want to help Solas, or think they might want to help him, I think Solas would always refuse the help, because he thinks what he's doing is monstrous, so why would he want to see someone he cares about helping him commit such a terrible act? I don't know if I would say Solas sees Lavellan as a lesser being, because that sounds really awful and it would give their relationship an ick factor, but he obviously sees his way and his culture as superior. Again, I think a close comparison could be made between Tolkien elves and humans. The elves are not cruel towards the humans and even strike up friendships with them sometimes. But they do see themselves as superior, and I think your average elf would likely save their own kind over a town of short-lived warmongering humans. This kind of reminds me of what Ashley says in Mass Effect . He probably does see people of modern the world as lesser beings. After all, he doesn't say he couldn't see them as people but Tranquil. At the start he probably sees the Inquisitor also a lesser being just like everyone else and more of a pawn then a person. However, once he comes around to respect them then that changes, especially with a romance Lavellan. As Cole says in the pre -break up banter "You're (referring to Lavellan) real which means everyone could be real. It changes everything but it can't."

At the end of DA:I main game, my Lavellans either wonder if there is more to come from Solas due to his reaction to the orb, or don't give a crap anymore. At the breakup scene, I tend to choose the option "WTF Solas, you'er breaking up with me because I didn't let you remove my tattoos."

I still think that that kind of relationship takes a lot of respect for each other, even if in a wierd way, and I like it Oh, agreed. It's definitely a more mature relationship. It's kind of a Mr. and Mrs. Smith type relationship, but just like that scenario, once the truths come out, the fists (and hurt feelings) start flying lol

Hi! I'm a newbie to the forums who decided to register after being a lurker for a while. I've never been too fond of Solas (romanced him once before but never really got into it, I think in general his romance doesn't have enough content in the main game and without Trespasser and understanding his personality and motifs he seems a bit annoying to me), but in my most recent play-through I've really felt differently. Maybe because I RPed my Lavellan more than I usually do and kind of felt all the feels much more... and then just when he'd removed her vallaslins only to dump her a moment later, she went to the war table and found out that all her clan had been wiped out (this happened for the first time to me and I didn't plan it, I just somehow made a mistake in war table mission and it came as a shock both to my Lavellan and me!)and OMG, the total heartbreak and overwhelming feeling of loneliness were so real! I finished Trespasser 2 days ago and still can't get it out of my head, so reading this particular thread is very comforting to me. After this lengthy introduction I'm diving deep into the thread again, still about 30 pages to go Save

I didn't like him for my first 2 play throughs and then bam after the 3rd one I'm stuck in the pits of Solavallen Hell. Stupid, beautiful, tragic egg.

Even if Solas doesn't necessarily think of Lavellan and modern Thedas' people as "lesser" by the end, the fact remains that they aren't HIS people in his eyes. The people he feels obligated to give everything for because he did them great harm. I think it's that idea of obligation that's an enormous factor in why Solas feels he must do what he has to do, regardless of his feelings for Lavellan or anyone else.
As for the "why didn't he tell me every detail of/context of his plan" thing, in the end I don't think that hard about it in regards to his character. Because this is a game and of course they can't have him reveal every mystery to you! So if I feel it doesn't fit his character, I kind of just chalk it up to necessary contrivance.
Also haha hi, Solas thread! It's been a long time and my username is different but it's been fun reading this thread again after so long.

Then there is this line... I think we all know what he means by "No matter what happens..." I think in this moment he is looking ahead, seeing what he plans to do (has always planned to do). He feels guilty, looking down at his beloved, knowing his actions will bring about their death. To ease his own pain, he tells them that what they had was real. IT WAS REAL. It was significant. His feelings were real. He was NOT a fool for letting this happen. Even so, he will go forward with his plans.

Some people see it as a betrayal, others see it as a straight dumping that their Lavellans are depressed over. Personally my Lavellan didn't get all mopey over it because she didn't really see it like she was being dumped. She could tell that whatever was going on, it was about Solas and not her. Something is haunting him and making him feel like he can't be with her. If she felt anything, it was worry and frustration that he won't tell her what's going on with him so she can help. Of course, she got her answer later! Artemis Oh I'm sure he still thinks he was a selfish fool for letting himself get so involved with Lavellan. But not because the idea of feeling so strongly for Lavellan was foolish; that was real and beautiful to him.

You know, actually, if it was all about RP coherently my Lavellan, she would react more like that, because she doesn't feel it's about her either, though she would still be competely broken-hearted because she didn't want to break up , but I definitely play it more dramatic than it would be if I was simply imagining how she would react, just because I enjoy those scenes more that way as an spectator, seeing it from the outside

I don't know, I don't want to know, I don't want this ever referenced again, good day sir and/or madam, it's been... nothing resembling a pleasure. I was actually just looking for any image to show that "she" (the character is named "Elizabeth") is, in actuality, a creepy old man with hairy legs hiding under a duck costume. That image came up and I was like, well, it doesn't get worse than that LOL it's from the anime Gintama, which is an extremely clever (and super meta) comedy. "Elizabeth" is a beloved pet of the earnest but somewhat naive Katsura Kotarou, who just adores "her." Fans are pretty sure that Katsura has no idea what Elizabeth really is. It's kind of an inside joke lol (Granted I haven't watched the anime for years so maybe he finally found out the truth xD) It's kind of cute how much he just obviously (and obliviously) adores her.

Oddly enough, someone just reblogged my photo set of that very scene. Odd because it's about a year old lol! And cheesy romantic me typed down the lines they said to each other: Don’t leave me. Not now. I love you…!”
“You have a rare and marvelous spirit. In another world…”
“Why not this one?!”
“I… can’t…. I’m sorry.”* * * I'm guessing that's not hopeful?
