Brainrot aside though... it does surprise me to how many people it seems to come as a surprise that DAVe is going to be a very Solas-centric game, and that this is not a recent development, but something reliant upon years of planning. We've had Trespasser. If there was any marketing material, it was usually Solas-centric, and all the things they revealed so far suggest a very Solas-centric game. Heck, the game itself was called "Dreadwolf" until they switched it very recently! ....Like, how is that a surprise to anyone, at this point??? The main question I was asked recently by someone who plays the games but doesn't hang out on the Internet is "Why did they change the name?" After all, the first ever trailer back in 2018 was subtitled "the Dread Wolf rises". In the 2020 trailer it concluded with a list of enemies we would encounter: "Demons, dragons, darkspawn, even the Dread Wolf!" with Solas looking suitably menacing. Then in 2023 we had the big announcement that the name of the game was Dreadwolf (big surprise - sarcasm). A really cool name though. At the beginning of this year my friend was still getting reminders with that name that the game would shortly be released. Then at the 11th hour then changed it to "The Veilguard". It does seem odd that they did this and if it was intended to deflect criticism that the plot was too Solascentric then it sure didn't work. (I know they said they wanted the focus to be on the team but I think most people who play Dragon Age games would expect that by this time. It was obvious that it was such a late decision or why give the team a name that is so similar to one of the factions? Has anyone who has played the game mentioned how often it actually refers to the team as the Veilguard in dialogue as opposed to just the ability screens, etc?) I do think that this was the last minute editorial and writing changes Patrick Weekes and others referenced having to make as they had to incorporate the name in the group into the main narrative and dialogue again. And really I'm not sure how much we could expect the same based on things. Dragon Age Origins focussed on the Origin stories and thus the Warden. DA 2 was basically the story of Hawke's Exodus from Ferelden. Dragon Age Inquisition seemed to establish the pattern that they were going for here because the Inquisition was the name of your organization and hence party, much like now with Veilguard. But the overall point here is that, despite the importance of characters and companion characters to BioWare and Dragon Age as a whole their games really haven't focussed on them. Indeed for all their importance to BioWare we rarely have gotten full quests on the level of the ME loyalty mission(s) where sometimes our quests in DA just get resolved in a single scene. And coupled with the issues Anthem had, which didn't really have any comapnions at all just quest givers, and it makes a lot of sense for BioWare to restablish themselves in the first place and then in the second place they also had a point in stating the mission statement of the game. Like who this game is 'about' is getting a lot of attention lately. And as I have mentioned that since Epler, Ghil, and others have all said its *about* Solas I have to conclude that it is still *about* Solas or he has a role in the story. Nevertheless though the two game titles really does add an interesting twist to this. As I said at the time calling it 'Dreadwolf' conjured images of it being like Infinity War. It was Thanos's story...it is Solas's story. Which is fine in a way but also unprecedented in BioWare's history. BioWare has never made a story about their villain. And then with Veilguard we have Epler and co going about how your team and the protagonist defines it, not your enemies. Which I ultimatley approve of but its kind of fascinating to consider based on everything we know.

I am honestly surprised by how much hate solavellan are getting on twitter. It's like for some reason we are to blame for Bioware's choice to carry a few decisions from DAI, mostly linked to Solas? As if haters somehow forgotten it's Solas romance who has the least amount of content in DAI and the only one without happy ending I don't understand the anger. He is one of the main figures in upcoming game, of course his romance to be addressed - it's not bioware playing favorites, it's them adding more to one of antagonists of the game. Weekes said in the past - his romance was added to make Solas story sadder. "If you want to experience the utter sadness of his character, it's the playthrough in which you romance him."

Has anyone who has played the game mentioned how often it actually refers to the team as the Veilguard in dialogue as opposed to just the ability screens, etc?) They didn't change the name to "Rook and Friends", nor to "Elgar'nan and Ghila'nain strike back". They changed it to "the VEILguard" - a thing that still indirectly references Solas as the Veil's creator, and one he has a very complicated relationship with, given that he's created it to protect the world, but at the same time it destroyed the world as he's known it - and its continuous existence keeps the world as we/modern Thedosians know it. And, as they mentioned, the current name references the group protecting the world from threats, while not giving us a maybe a bit erroneous impression about the Dread Wolf - because while the final confrontation with Solas is still in the cards, I don't think many expected that the game will open with Solas' ritual and he'll end up, effectively, our unwilling adviser and even patron (who, because things went sideways, is also now a member of a group protecting the Veil, hehe). Also, I don't think a group has to officially have a name in order for it to exist as a concept, at least in our heads. After all, the name of the group is pretty clear about what exactly they want to protect - be it from its creator, or any other acute threat that would likely benefit from tearing it.

I think a big part of the hate Solavellan gets is based in misogyny tbh. Most of us are female or female presenting and you know how that fares with a male dominant industry. I do believe it's a factor, though I've also seen attacks making it seem like only a certain group of players really likes Solas (what it is depends on the accuser)... and I do have to laugh at the idea that somehow that small group of players apparently has the power to bend the entire multi-million franchise to their whims I wish Sollavellans had power they claim we have! Like, it's amazing how hard for some is accept that some of the things we now see in the game is not a product of retcons, of some group's wishes, or upper management pressure, but because the story either allows it to exist with the way it's been set up, and that they've been setting up these things for quite some time now. And no, I'm quite sure they didn't plan Sollavelan prior to DAI , but the reason it can even exist, or get a potential resolution of some sort of DAVe is dependent on factors that exist entirely outside of choosing to romance Solas, and have indeed been planned for a very long time, which is a thing we can infer from story alone, nevermind Word of God.

What bugs me, is that critique, I found, is based in narcissistic tendencies of those people. It's not really about Solas and Lavellan, it's about not them and their OC getting attention in next game. Quite a few literally said they wished solavellan didn't get any extra content, because it unfair. They also trying to push the narrative that befriended Inquisitor has as much impact as romanced one. And once someone disagrees, because friendship isn't the same as romance, they get defensive. Because of course, how can it be not about their Inq.

Because of course, how can it be not about their Inq. I have to wonder what exactly did people expect from DAVe? I've read quite a few of comments complaining about how DAVe won't reference this or that (which we don't yet know; there are ways to set up a worldstate beyond the Keep), while either being oblivious, or conveniently ignoring the fact that when Inquisition referenced some choices from past games, there were people who complained as much about it - that it was either too little, or not right. It's a very "damn if you do, damn if you don't" kind of thing. But I agree that it does appear to be one of those things that is particularly incensing to those who are very attached to their OCs and their headcanons. I've seen it happen in other RPGs in which folks can romance or influence NPCs and the story as well - some people fall in love with their OCs and headcanons so much, that any information that threatens it (regardless how non-canonic their headcanon is) makes those people rage and attack everyone, from people with different headcanons/OCs, to creators of the franchise. Thing is, we've known DAVe is going to be a more-or-less direct sequel to Inquisition, and that the story of Solas and his relationship with Inky (whether friendly or hostile) will come at the forefront. The other players got a lot more romance content for other characters, including being able to marry Cullen. We also have no clue whether Dorian romance will be referenced if he shows up in the game (and, IMO, he has a very high chance to do so) - but, it's one of those things we can set up when we start the game.

Any misconceptions I may have had regarding his... experience...flew out the window the first time I heard 'indomitable focus'. It was so brazen.
