While I definitely think there was a dip in quality in storytelling and characters in Andromeda, I also think people are overplaying it by acting like its crap. I do find every one of the original trilogy to be great despite their various flaws and maybe this last game wasn't great, but it was at least good.

Still is, in my opinion. Every game in the series has flaws and yet I like them all anyway. I feel the same way as well, each game has a single strong element and then a lot of okay elements. To me with Andromeda there just wasn't the standout element for me and I think for me that is because I don't really enjoy open world games, but the people I know who enjoyed Andromeda more then I did enjoy open world style games.

Just to be annoying, I like open world games, but I didn't like Andromeda's open world I still like Andromeda though (less than the trilogy but still) but I still think the open world part could have be done a lot better

I'd say Andromeda's "strong element", as you put it, is it's combat and movement mechanics.

Mass Effect is still great. Among the games, the last two(ME3 and MEA) are my first and second favorite respectively. So the franchise has always been great and only getting better IMO.

I remember when they gave a cr*p about consistency in the setting. I remember when the protagonist was OUR character, who's fate and personality were ours to decide. I remember enemies who were complex and charismatic. Now..there are still some Two Steps from Hell songs I get sad listening to because they were used in Mass Effect tribute videos. This series had such potential.

Don't know if you could call ME 'great,' good sure but not great. If the broken lore and plot holes were to be fixed (along with the LIs trying to jump into Shepard's pants!) then sure, it could be classed as great.

It's been Bioware in general for me. If I list my 5 favorite Bioware games, nothing after DA:O would be on the list. As for Mass Effect specifically. I didn't like ME:A any more, or any less than ME:2. So if this trend continues and they make another ME game, odds are I will like it

Andromeda's open world problem is not really an issue with the open world itself. Other games have managed to do this better, where going off the beaten path reaps more rewards in side content that may have a stronger narrative to it than you might expect, or really meaty information/backstory that fleshes out the world a bit more. TW3, BotW and HZD manages to make exploration fun just fine.

A balance between corridor-shooters and massive open worlds.

For me ME2 was the high point of the series. If I could get ME3's weapons and combat in ME2 I would be so happy. While I have not been impressed with the writing of BW games since DA:O and ME2 it is their style of a open world that has killed my excitement for BW games going forward. At least make your games mod friendly so players can add the desperately needed content to keep these games alive.

Yeah, for Mass Effect, a bigger hub with more content to investigate is preferable to futzing about on various planets, but being able to investigate anomalies you happen to come across when entering a system or getting a transmission for help or something is also fun. ME1 managed to do this, even if it did end with pointless Mako travel and cookie-cutter bunkers.

It had Harbinger. ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL. Its too bad he didn't have a bigger role in ME3. My Shepard liked hearing him talk smack to her.
The trilogy also has the Honorable Mr. Rupert Gardner, the greatest chef in the universe. My Shepard missed his calamari gumbo in ME3.

I remembered ME being great in MEA last night when I rescued the Moshae...great mission, great combat, great level design, cool dialogue...had a blast
Both the trilogy and MEA are great in their own ways.

I remember enemies who were complex and charismatic. Now..there are still some Two Steps from Hell songs I get sad listening to because they were used in Mass Effect tribute videos. This series had such potential. I don't know if consistency is something I could ever say Mass Effect ever possessed. After all, one game isn't an example of consistency of setting. We'd have to have at least 2 games that set the same general tone, and within the trilogy, that never happened. I'll grant decent control over Shepard, since it only had autodialogue in the form of a few false choices here and there, but Shepard's fate was never really in our hands, just the poor schlubs within Shep's field of influence, sometimes to a ridiculous degree (the Council). I'd say that Benezia was probably the most "complex" character in the lot, but Sertis' performance was so gorram cheesy that I can't watch any of her scenes again without laughing. I'd say that ME2's TIM was about the only charismatic character that ends up being an enemy that I can think of, but certainly not Saren. That guy was basically proto-Marauder that was so plainly drawn up as a bad guy jerkface that it spoiled any attempt to make him sympathetic.

Nice vid....haha...The Reapers was no joke...."you exist because we allow it....you will die because we demand it".....The Reapers reigning down on earth in ME3 made the situation feel so desperate and hopeless.....Not saying Andromeda needed something like the universal threat of the Reapers, but the Kett as the main enemy sucked ass and the writing in general was just mediorce. Seeing the Asari, the Turians, Krogan and Salarian all struggling and fighting for their lives and take on tremendous losses in ME3 was exciting and thrilling to the very end......so many heartfelt moments......(Mordin,...Legion, Samarah and her daughter....)....The Reapers did not discriminate against any of these species in terms of their annihilation. Again...Andromeda didn't need anything like the Reapers to inject excitement into the series, but we should have felt excitement alone from journeying to a new Galaxy and yet the entire story of Andromeda was very mediorce......all it needed was a compelling story and interesting characters.... both of which were lacking.....

While I did enjoy MEA, especially the combat, I think what it lacked was that little bit of desperation to drive the story forward. Throughout MET I felt pressured to stay on mission...felt like the fate of the galaxy was at stake. I never really felt that in MEA. It suffered from some of the same issues that DAI in that it tells us that the people are in a desperate situation. That violates storytelling 101: show, don't tell. The type of thing that would have helped would have been an early story mission in which we find people resorting to cannibalism to avoid starvation; maybe investigating a closed off section of the Nexus early after arrival to discover people having been butchered like livestock. Instead we just kind of get bickering politicians telling us to establish settlements in order to wake people. Never really resonated with me. I don't think the open world aspect is helping the storytelling either. Still it wasn't as good or bad as either extreme would claim it to be.

Loved ME1 and ME2. Enjoyed most of ME3 (up until the rushed botched ending). MEA had a decent theme to it but the badly written dialogue between characters ruined it mostly. Visual bugs got fixed but you can never fix bad writing after the game goes gold.
