One thing I kinda liked in DA2 is how each companion had a certain "look", and while you could upgrade stats, their armor/clothing look never changed. Now while some armors in DAI kinda kept to that, others, not so much (Varric in what looks like Rogue plate mail is kinda silly). So, what do you think? I honestly would rather them keep the looks they have when you first encounter them, their clothing/armor design.

No. I want to be able to change their combat attire. That really bugged me with the Mass Effect games and Dragon Age 2, since there were outfits not suited for missions.
Now I am fine with their casual attire remaining the same.
I also want the protagonist to have access to all those attires rather than being excluded thus our options limited.

Noooooo. I loved DA2 but I absolutely hated the fact that everyone wore the exact same armor for a decade.
DAI struck a perfect balance between customization and character identity, imo. Everyone still has a distinct "look" but it's not visually monotonous.

One of the few things I unconditionally loved about DA:I was the way the companion armors worked. It was the best possible compromise.
I didn't like it as much for the Inquisitor however.

I prefer customizable armor with a distinct look, at least among those who can be trusted to dress themselves.

I prefer customizable armor with a distinct look, at least among those who can be trusted to dress themselves. Not to mention that its not as though in the Bioware games in which you could choose what armor someone is wearing you got more choice of how they looked. DA:O it was pretty much all the same armor in slightly different colors. Sometimes you'd get a style variant. Maybe one or two unique items. Which is essentially exactly what was happening in DA:I, except characters also have a distinct look.

I thought DAI was the perfect compromise for allowing followers to have an iconic look, one that suited their personality, while also allowing some player control over appearance. It also didn't have them wearing the same thing over time, which seemed ridiculous with DA2. I quite liked the difference between causal (hanging around Haven/Skyhold) and battle armor as well.
That said, I would have liked for their casual armor/clothing to actually be casual. I can't imagine Dorian lounging around in that leather contraption all the time. Rather than causal clothing, the game treats it more as base armor, which is most obvious with the mages; if you don't equip hand or foot upgrades, Dorian's robe just drapes over the whole thing.

The way DAI handled it was a very good compromise. Like with Varric, you could give him some proper armor and he'd still have his own look. There wasn't a lot options to customize the looks but it was good enough.

I liked DAI custom armor with tinting for companions. I think I disliked all armor options for male elf inky. I liked that they could have their own style in the casual, but that Varric wouldn't actually attempt battle with dragons in nothing but an V neck shirt and leather jacket pants combo (unless you wanted him to.)

No.
The casual wear can be the same, but I like to customize the companions armor. I like the tinting from DAI, though at times I wanted to have one solid color which I wasn't able to do. Hopefully that changes in the next game.
I like if robes return. My mage Inquisitor wanted to wear a robe, but instead at times was wearing a long coat looking like someone from a western movie.

While I agree that DAI is the best approach when it comes to companions armor, I was pretty pissed that Sera, Vivienne and even Cassandra all had great looking armor (with a bunch of variety too) that was way more stylish and elegant than what the female Inquisitor got.
Honestly, I think DAI's armor looks so damn ugly. That awful green-greyish default color and everything looks so "plastic", and the style? I agree with the person above me saying that it looked straight out of a western movie, but not in a "cool" way. It seems Bioware still doesn't understand that people want their characters to look great (including hair!). Here's hoping they will actually put more effort into the protagonist's armor like they seem to do with the companions, and give us a good selection full of variety and personality (every armor for the Inquisitor was just so plain and boring). Not to mention, stop with the class restricted crap, both for armor and weapons. Pretty ridiculous that a mage can't even hold a regular sword. Will their arm fall off or something?

pretty much just going to echo everyone here, I think DA:I handled it best, however I would also personally like the race restrictions on armour removed & I would like the choice to tint weapons too.
Just my thoughts on this.

Now however, EA would likely insist such content be in microtransactions Or sold as a DLC pack. This is where I'm totally ok with Companies charging more, because Cosmetics are optional and don't affect ability to play base game.

I think the issue is that they can't guess what everyone will like. There is a reason there is a fashion Industry in real life, tastes vary and tastes change. I mean, I recall a discussion that discussed Alistair's hair cut. how that was popular in the late 2000s? but come 2018, people are commenting like they shouldn't have Dated Themselves with such a Specific hair cut. There is the half shaved with braid hair cut in DAI that I believe is reaching the end of it's popularity now.

You'll notice that before I said that, I wrote "Honestly, I think DAI's armor looks so damn ugly." with "think" being a key word here. It's great that you liked it, but a lot of people didn't, and I never said I speak for everyone. Sorry if I don't put "in my opinion" or "I think" in every sentence I write.

I just object to the phrasing that the Inquisitor armor was universally despised. As for Alistair's hair, the issue is one of follower iconic appearance. Zevran also had the exact same hair in DA2, as did Leliana. Most other followers have kept a similar style. They couldn't use the exact same hair, as in DA2, because of Frostbite, but Cassandra still has her short hair, Leliana has her bob, Morrigan still has her bun, Varric has his partial-pony (I have no idea what to call this). Even though it makes sense for him to have something different, I expect Dorian to have similar hair, if not the exact same style, for the same reason; if they do change his hair I'll be quite surprised.

There is the half shaved with braid hair cut in DAI that I believe is reaching the end of it's popularity now. Of course. I just object to the phrasing that the Inquisitor armor was universally despised. But you are just nitpicking because of the way a certain sentence was phrased when it was obviously not meant to be literal, and if you read my whole comment where I am clearly giving my personal opinion, you'd understand that, so I don't get the need to go all defensive and imply that I meant to speak for everyone because of ONE badly phrased sentence. There's no such thing as "everyone", there will always be at least one person that will feel differently. I'm not ignorant to think otherwise. I think the real problem is that Bioware had a clear style for the Inquisitor armor and only gave us small variations within that style. So the people who don't like it to begin with, are stuck with it, they have no other options. Bioware can't please everyone, true, but with DAI they didn't even try since they only offered us one style. Which is why I want more variety, like actual variety and not just "slightly different".

Yeah, braid was gone in DAI, but she had the same style in DA2. In DAI, aside from the missing braid, it's essentially the same hair. If this were real life, I would fully expect her to have a different look 10 years later. The epilogue slides show Dorian with some different hair, but I put that down to artist vision, rather than a hint of what we're actually going to see.

I think it depends on how they decide to make the character design, some characters are so tied with their outfits that their dress can be considered a part of them, there are plent of examples like that in Anime. In DAII Fenris with a different armor wouldn't look like Fenris anymore.

I liked how we could change companion armor in DAI without changing them style-wise. I'd like to see that return in DA4, and I would like to see robes return. I wasn't fond of the mage armor in DAI for my Inquisitor.

I was glad to be able to make sure IB was able to go into battle with something other than his bosomy man-pillows to protect himself. Though I wouldn't mind having different types of casual attire as well
