If we don't get customizable companion armor again, I'd at least like multiple outfits they change into depending on the location we visit. Heavy furs and leathers in snow, lighter covered fabrics in desert etc.

In DA2, you're not really the leader of anything. Your companions were not really subordinate to you and they had their own lives outside of the PC. In this sense, it made sense that the PC had no control over their wardrobe. This is interesting! I hadn't thought of the DA2 armor in this way before. However, I'd be more willing to accept it if the followers changed their own appearance for each act. In DA2, it just comes across as weird that everyone wears the exact same thing over seven years (playable time). The only person for whom it makes sense is Avaline since she wears the guard uniform. And ironically, Aveline does change outfits between acts. In the prologue she wears her leather vest, act 1 she has the basic guard uniform and in act 2 and 3 she's wearing the captains armor. So she has an excuse and still switches it up. --- As for the topic, I prefer to pick my companions armor. Or at least have them own a few sets of outfits, even if it's just different coloring.

I'd be happy for them to go the ME3 route; companions have a few armor sets to choose from, as long as we could augment them with runes etc.

I hope the companions have casual outfits again. As it looks off when your just chatting to them at home and they're all armoured up (espeacially the more hoopy armours).
I really liked how in DAI you could tint everybody's armour so your team had a variety of styles but a matching colour scheme. So hoping armour tinting sticks around too.

If we don't get customizable companion armor again, I'd at least like multiple outfits they change into depending on the location we visit. Heavy furs and leathers in snow, lighter covered fabrics in desert etc. Second this. I always felt weird bad for taking Blackwall (and Bull) into the Western Approach and Forbidden Oasis when decked out in full mail, cause wearing that armour in the desert must have been unbearable. Dorian also complains about being freezing in several locations (Crestwood, the Hissing Wastes and Emprise du Lion) because he's neither used to, nor dressed appropriately for the cold (which sums up most of southern Thedas, from a Tevinter perspective). Having companions alter their outfits depending on environmental factors would be realistic in-universe. Even the epilogue slides for Inquisition depict Morrigan wearing a cloak as she departs Skyhold and ventures out into the Frostbacks mountains.

In answer of the OP: I think DA:I did the perfect middle ground here. You had armors that had their own look, which you could equip on your companions, you had armors that kept the original companion look (o.e. changed looks, depending on who you outfitted with it) and you had armors that altered the companion look slightly but still had a unique look for each. IMO, it doesn't get better than that. Choices for everyone!

I hated that in Dragon Age 2 because the armor upgrades were never as interesting or fun to find as whole new armors, plus it took away from the player's ability to customize their party. Inquisition really did the best of both worlds, and should be the model going forward.

I love to romance Merrill in DA2, but I hate the armour she gets if you do.
(Well no, the armour itself is fine, but it should have kept her normal colour scheme)

I'd like the PC to have better armor, for sure. There were only a handful of outfits in all three games I found tolerable. On the other hand, I haaaate seeing PCs with modded companion clothes. Vivienne, Sera, Bethany, and Isabela seem to be the usual victims of wardrobe theft and every time I'm just like.... lolol, you stole Character X's clothes, those are not your clothes. There is no rational reason for why this bothers me so much but I will exit out of Let's Plays and screenshots or whatever when I see this.
