Someone is whining that female companions aren't pornstars. Again. Should male companions be pornstars too? If that's the design the developers want to use, fine. If the developers want to use a different design, that's fine too.

Who says that a "pretty" person isn't a Bioware fan? I'm sure this company attracts all sorts of people.
I don't mind if they create more "sexy" characters in their upcoming games. It's all subjective, though. So far, I've enjoy most of the characters. But I know not all agree with my tastes.

The "solution" for this kind of things would be at least on PC mods, then people could customize to his/her liking.
I'm not saying that BioWare games have to be like Fallout or Elder Scrolls in that regard but at least more friendly to modding.

Depends on the game....for Mass effect tho? While i'm not expecting super-model drop dead gorgeous vixens, i don't mind character models that are pleasing to the eye. And for the Mass Effect series...eh, i'm kinda expecting that....ultra-modern high tech sci-fi drama.....nobody is expecting character models that look like Jaba-the hut or fat stubby folks........but nice looking character models that look good in their high end armor and space suits.
Playing "The Evil Within 2" i'm not expecting to play the Calvin Klein model stud, on a twisted journey into the depths of hell....The main character fit that atmosphere perfectly for the journey required of him and his background complemented his history of alcohol abuse due to his history of losing his daughter in a fire.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but eh...i don't think there is nothing wrong with looking at a character and saying that it's a fugly looking character.....it might have more to do with the artists rendering of the character itself (like what clearly happened with Sara)....Sara's not ugly mind you, but she had a bit of a derp - de derp look to her facial animations when she first surfaced and while that derpyness is still there, it's nothing on the level that it was when the game first dropped.

I'd agree with that, but given how much these games cost to make I can't think a face model would effect that much. But maybe it would, I'm always shocked when I find out someone wants to charge me to fix a whats it at my house. Then I' usually, sure I got the money, but I also have access to instructional videos on youtube and Wednesdays off. This might be the same thing. Sure, they got the money but they might have a better use for it.

Do you think if EA would spend a few more millions on writing (hire a dozen of writers more or give money to existing ones, no idea), it would be better? I honestly don't.

And yet another one of these topics... go play whatever is you play for “pretty” characters. The rest of us are good. It doesn't break my game one way or the other, but I'd prefer pretty characters in the game. I suspect most people would. I'd rather not walk past the mutant white dude with the fro in the nexus with the giant potato head. Which guy was this? I don't remember seeing him Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but eh...i don't think there is nothing wrong with looking at a character and saying that it's a fugly looking character.....it might have more to do with the artists rendering of the character itself (like what clearly happened with Sara)....Sara's not ugly mind you, but she had a bit of a derp - de derp look to her facial animations when she first surfaced and while that derpyness is still there, it's nothing on the level that it was when the game first dropped. Replying here because proboards won't let me reply outside the quote box.
Scott had some hilarious facial animations as well. Like when he sees the Tempest for the first time, his expression made him look like he wanted to bone the ship (Sara looks like a perv too)Should male companions be pornstars too? Fine with me if they do. Almost all their teeth missing, but they're packing a massive package. There's an upcoming Conan game that allows you to select dong size I'm not opposed. Just thinking that if using pretty face models costs more money, I'd rather go without and spend more money on good writing. Chobot looked awful in-game, IMO Dragon Age Inquisition had better faces and they didn't use face models

That reminds me of a line in a fic I read (this fic if anyone is interested, it's Vetra/FRyder archiveofourown.org/works/10507122/chapters/23184747 ) Vetra approached the desk, nodding at Addison but trying to avoid eye contact. There was something weirdly off-putting about the Director, as if the muscles of her face were still cryo-frozen and her eyes were trying their best to get away.

I don't care about inclusivity or PC, and admittedly BioWare has made a 180 degree turn in their philosophy to making 3D characters for their companions lately where you have your Sara Ryders, Seras, arguably even Coras where they're not photomodels in appearance in contrast to Miranda of ME2 and 3, EDI, Ashley in ME3 or some characters in DA2.
It's a shame it couldn't hit a middle road so nobody complains about this shit and preferrably I hope the design-process going into characters is more like "what would this gal look like?" than "Would it be okay if she looks like a hot model?" or "We can't make her look too top-model, it feeds into our patriarchal society and self-esteem issues of teenage girls" etc.
All things considered I don't really mind Sara Ryder's look too much or Sera's. In fact, I love the face they gave Sera it's so cutely piggish and ugly but also kinda attractive at the same time. With Sara it's just a failed attempt and as has been documented they used their facescan technology via outsourcing and did not touch up the faces after that process. It's that or EA outsource places just kinda suck at doing the facescan thing properly because Sara DOES look weird even outside of the broken animations, and it's not because her face actress looks weird, it's because the model didn't get the proper proportions or the proper idle look to it. Even Miranda in ME2 looks kinda wonky as idle, like, too fat and bulky compared to Yvonne IRL, and don't get me started on that professor in Leviathan DLC who looked absolutely disgusting in their attempt to make a character look more realistic.
So yeah. There's a mandate, or there has been, internally, that "we can't make these characters look too sexy because it's not realistic" according to Liam Robertson (Is he fitting something to a personal narrative or is he impartial? We don't know, don't get into this) and knowing the social issues that often get debated on social media, in some of my circles and former high school friends, and in the media... you can't fuckin' deny there's a push for oversensitive creativity in corporate filmmaking and games these days. It's a matter of finding a better middle road and daring to be honest as creators with big financial and arguably social responsibilities to what sort of moral messages their work contains on a subliminal level.

Wew lad I totally forgot about Bryson's daughter in Leviathan. This was a problem through all the DLC's, from Petrovsky to Brooks, but Bryson was definitely the worst. I think Bio's always kind of sucked with its face scanning to some degree. Sheploo is probably the only one to make it out alive. I dunno what the deal is and why they can't pull this off, but I'd much rather they just make up faces if they're going to screw scans, while other devs seem to do it pretty damn well, like Aloy from HZD. I didn't know she was a face scan of a real person.

Motion capture has also been awful since ME1 with the stunt actors overacting the reused gestures for conversation, action scene choreography etc. There's so few scenes outside of some parts of ME2 and the ending of ME3 where I actually didn't feel distracted by motion capture. I really wish they'd get better at that stuff.

It's a shame it couldn't hit a middle road so nobody complains about this shit... If this message board is any indication, people will complain about shit that you'd never think people would complain about...someone would complain they went "middle road"... I liked what they did with Sera, Cassandra, Vivienne, Leliana, Josephine, etc in DA:I as they seemed to fit the character they were trying to convey through the narrative - they weren't the same animation re-skinned but had distinctive features that made sense. Sera was scrappy rogue with an unconventional personality so her style, look and self-administered haircut made sense. Cassandra was fierce warrior/Seeker so it would make seem to follow she would have scars and a shorter haircut. Both Josephine and Vivienne were acquainted with their various royal courts and can play the political and appear consistent in terms of appropriate dress, eloquence and attractiveness for their role. Leliana is an ex-bard spy and seductress so the beauty that is present would be essential but her dress now reflects her evolution into a senior adviser and spy master. To me these choices felt "middle road" in that they could have gone for "super-model" but instead they went for something that fits the RPG fantasy/adventure genre while at the same time looks like someone you might run into in real life. Same for Scott and Sara in ME:A...I don't think the model choices were an issue as much as the way their character was expressed through the animations.

I thought the way the rigging worked on the default face was so much weirder than the rest. They all had moments where the animation was borked, but none nearly as severely. The shallow doll eyes pre-patch didn't help.
Personally I love what they did with Sera. Just say wot.
