BioWare should learn from God of War. I like the way how they designed magic with melee attacks, and I think BioWare should learn from this and come up ways to create a combat design that is satisfying and addictive. I'm personally not a fan of spells cast through weapons, that's not a mage for me, that's just a warrior with magical weaponry. Dragon Age have enhancements on weapons. Soooo....

My ideas and suggestions are peppered throughout the thread, both in the fantasy and gameplay departments. Mine sounds better. Maybe it does to you. I simply prefer the classic sword in one hand, spell in the other aesthetic. If I wanted the character who simply wields weapons I might as well play a warrior or a rogue, because the video you posted is little more than weapon attacks with extra particle effects...which doesn't really fulfill the fantasy of a mage to me.

In another thread, I was toying with the idea of Mages could temporarily merge with (semi-possession) a Spirit or Demon, taking on various physical aspects, powers and resistances.
Eg. A low-level Mage binding himself to a Terror Demon might be able to Fade-Teleport, popping up underneath enemies, and shred them with claws. A high-level mage might become Pride Demon abomination, granting them heavy physical attacks, their whip ability, energy blasts, resistances, etc..
So, a slightly different spin on the typical melee mage...

I don't think we've seen a successful example of demon possession where the person stayed in control. Now the way I could see it working is say...consuming essence. You get their abilities but don't become possessed. Hmmm...that could possibly work as a warrior (or rogue) subclass/specialisation. Solas said anyone who can dream can commune with spirits if they wish, so warrior (or rogue) could use this to steal demonic abilities

You get their abilities but don't become possessed. Hmmm...that could possibly work as a warrior (or rogue) subclass/specialisation. Solas said anyone who can dream can commune with spirits if they wish, so warrior (or rogue) could use this to steal demonic abilities The original idea stemmed from Rivaini Seers & Avaar Mages and their experience with willing possession (and separation). But also to a certain extent Grandin from JoH. He had allowed himself to be possessed, and while not the most stable person, he'd continue to fight in your service if you allowed him. He also started to physically change when he was began losing it, but before he want full-demon. Anders was a similar case, but neither had the knowledge of how to separate out their other halves.
A few times throughout the series they mention time being important in possession. The Avaar don't allow their mages to stay possessed too long, and Anders mentioned becoming inseparable from Justice at the end. So knowledge and temporarily possession would work within the DA lore.
But yeah, there's no reason why it couldn't also work for other classes, or a certain spin on the idea.

This is the ideal battlemage that I wanted in the next DA.
- ice nova - ice projectile - ice damage on weapon hits
- chance to freeze on everything - freeze combos
Seems like a pretty reasonable build/subset of a very robust character one might find in a fantasy game (read as an ambiguous hint for the future, not a snarky comment about Shadow of War)

Don't forget to add the ice slide where the mage covers the ground with ice for the companions to slide along while slicing and dicing the baddies.

Ambiguous hints? Oooohhh BSN loves those. We can stretch them for a very very long thread.

In favour of more ice based attacks in games, they're often very lacking.

I picked hybrid. A mix of melee and magic that focus on closer enemies sounds about right.

I do miss the Cone of Cold from DA2...
Especially if it could be upgraded to create a temporary spiky ice wall.
(Yes I'm using Frozen as a reference - don't judge me! ).

The "Melee Mage" is whatever you want to mean, as long as the system allows it. In Origins, you could play the Arcane Warrior and barely cast any spells because all of them were passive and made you super tanky. I do wish there were more options for playing a close range caster, but they Wizards are usually represented as being so squishy and most of their spells are ranged, so it would kind of be pointless.

While I prefer a pure mage, I would think a melee mage would need some impressive crowd control or abjuration to prevent taking damage.
Those are generally the sorts of abilities I like to see in a pure mage, as well. They could allow any party to go tankless.

(Yes I'm using Frozen as a reference - don't judge me! ). Give me back *all* the elemental cone attacks. Seriously, those were my favorite spells in Origins Just let me freeze, set on fire and shock everything right in front of me, then let me swing a sword at it, and I would be happy.

I chose "A Mage that casts spells that focus on close-range" in the poll. What I mean by a melee mage is an Avatar-style bender or Dr. Strange from the MCU, that also wields small weapons (magically generated or otherwise) to hit things with in close quarters. I typically think of a more rogue-like movement style b/c of magical enhancement to the body like upped speed or agility, or b/c of increased mobility via magic. The occasional fireball is not out of the question, but it would have decreased range, and might even be changed into a flame burst or touch attack, due to the lack of a staff to focus magic through. Or the fireball's cost would just be increased in comparison to other mages, again due to the lack of traditional staff. This is pretty close to what comes to my mind as well but it was very clear with this poll (which was about the same results as when I polled people in the office) that this term is used more frequently to describe a generic mage who also swings a weapon. SO, I had to come up with a different term to describe the above Usually I do not play mages, but an Avatar Bender/Elementalist monk type mage I would LOVE to try out :-).
