Ummm? knight enchanter in DAI is melee as for the others (if memory severs me right) close range casting I believe would be considered as melee, (shrug)_ could be wrong, and i'm sure someone will tell me so.

*cough*
I know its a necro, but melee mage is apparently a playstyle option for mage in Veilguard. So call me a mortalitasi, but this needed to come back.
Also, thank you, Luke/Bioware. I am extremely interested in seeing what the game has in store for this option!

Thinking back to DAI wasn't there a specialization for front line combat mages called Emerald Knights?

In gameplay, we can see Neve jump to attack enemy at close range from afar.
I hope basic magic attack animation will change if Mage Rook attack close range enemy like DA2. Or Rook can swtich to melee weapon (dagger/short blade) when enemy come closer.
And short staff/wand. Let Rook burn enemy by burning melee weapon (Also freeze & shock too).
Summon magical weapon to attack is not my style.

Honestly it makes me think of the high risk, high reward ME3 vanguard. Since mages tend to be more squishy than other classes they should have more op touch based powers, some damage mitigation spells, and proximity debuffs. I do tend to gravitate to these types of playstyles but it'll depend how Bio implements it. If it looks promising I may roll with it since I'm fairly sure I'm going to do a mage on my first pass.

Thinking back to DAI wasn't there a specialization for front line combat mages called Emerald Knights? It was Knight Enchanter and it was so overpowered it was ridiculous. I defeated one of those big dragons in the Emprise du Leon on my own because I got fed up keep reviving my companions after they got knocked down (I had the ability to do that too). It was a lot of fun since our weapon was essentially a light sabre. Go Thedas Jedi. To be honest, I would be happy with the old Arcane Warrior spec on which is was meant to have been based. There we had certain defensive buffs and could use our magic score instead of strength so we could use armour and swords we usually wouldn't be allowed. Now Bellara has a magical bow they may be unique to her but I'd be equally happy being an Arcane Archer with the bow equivalent of my light sabre but that wouldn't really be melee I suppose, unless it can double as a light sabre. I await the reveal with interest.

Melee mage makes me think of 2 ways it could be built: 1. Something like red mage in Final Fantasy, where you have spell combos that build resources from range then you spend those resources doing a melee combo with a weapon (sword in the red mage's case). Knight Enchanter in DAI seemed too short lived in its melee phase for me to properly call it a melee mage, it felt more like a normal mage but with a pretty good "eff around and find out" attitude towards enemies that got too close. 2. A build that casts short range or touch spells, like in D&D, where you have Inflict Wounds, Shocking Grasp, Cure Wounds etc. The elemental cone attacks in DAO had a shorter range and in DAI we had the gliphs that mages could set right in front of them.

There was Battle Mage in DAA. The description was thus: Some mages specialize in spells that permit them to engage in combat from afar. Battle mages, by contrast, prefer to wade into the fray alongside their blade wielding companions, close enough to read the fear in their opponents' eyes. Their spells are primarily concerned with personal preservation as well as control of the elements in their immediate surroundings. You could draw on your enemies life energy to heal you (a bit like blood magey that) but also blast them with cold energy or cloak yourself in elemental energy that damage your opponent when they attacked you. Each time you suffered a hit it restored your mana. I would be happy if they brought back something similar to that.

That was it, I remembered there was a specialization in Awakening that had a pretty large aura around you that did elemental damage to enemies but didn't remember if it was Battlemage or something from another class. There were also a lot of protective spells like shields and rock armor in DAO and DA2 and ice armor in DAI, mind blast that stunned enemies that got close, then in DAI you could craft masterworks with guard on hit and put barriers on top of that to make yourself the beefiest of beefs.

That's not so far-fetched since the skill tree is inspired by Final Fantasy X.

Well we know the mage classes now. It isn't called a melee mage but a combat mage. Think it is going to lean more into the Knight Enchanter sort of build as the other specialisms are Necromancy and Elemental, so the Battle Mage spells are more likely to end up there. Apparently healing magic is going to return but it wasn't wholly absent in DAI. It is just the specialist spirit healer was missing, so unless that has now become a general ability, that one seems gone for good. I'd rather get back to having two specialisms too. Perhaps we will be allowed that once we get past a certain level. If we can get to level 50 with only one specialism, what are we going to spend our ability points on?
