Well, i would like an explanation for your inclusion of Ayn Rand... You may be a fan of hers (or not, I don't know) but as an educated person, surely you admit calling her a Philosopher is a classification error? If not, please defend her inclusion, and we can discuss

I'm not really a fan of radical individualism. I included Ayn Rand because there was so much libertarian hype around her. Others may want to defend her!
I may replace Voltaire with Montesquieu (which is more important, but less charismatic and stuff). Also I'm surprised Jean-Jacques Rousseau is not very popular... may erase him as well just like most of those post WW2 philosophers!

I said Machiavelli, Locke, and Sowell.
Machiavelli is likely the most brutally misrepresented philosopher of all time. He was first and foremost a hardline pragmatist, feels and misgivings be damned. He was just open to too many taboos.
Locke's work was HUGELY influential on the good old U S of A. That guy cast a very big shadow.
Sowell I just like. He's a no-nonsense sort of guy.

Ayn Rand is an anarchist who vehemently claimed she was not an anarchist. This is the lack of philosophical rigor I mentioned previously, and why I still feel she has no business in this poll despite her fanatics (yes, if you really like Ayn Rand you are a fanatic, please discuss), as she is not a Philosopher in the least and instead is the most liberal freak of all time. Yes, liberal. Read her again.

My favorite philosophers? Kssshk, well obviously it's Machiavolus and Voltaire. There was also this old Krogan drunk on Ryncol who dropped some heavy mind bombs on me about life and death. I also turn into a philosopher, when I'm on Red Sand and it goes like this:

how do we know that half of them were actually philosophers, history records them as such but gives no reference for it, Asimov's work we can at least read, orwell wrote what some have deemed a manual-others the ravings of a deranged mind..... hell even starship troopers (books) could be seen as a philosophical musing
your classification of what is a philosopher is at odds with your ability to prove them to be such.... for all we know the works of plato Aristotle archemidies and so on could just have been fantasy stories.... but since there is no examples of their work we will never know that for sure, on the other hand there are literally thousands of literary offerings made accessible today that can be judged on their merits...
I suggest that your poll is flawed and without easy access to the works its impossible to judge the quality of many of the purported greats, their acclaimed works having been lost to the entropy of time

Nietsche, Kant, Hume, Keirkagard, and Berkely are the ones I tend to fall back to a lot. Descarte is another. Their ideas are interesting and provoking, though Nietsche is clearly the best writer of this group. Easy to read, concise (mostly), and the ideas it invokes creates discussions that can last hours and create or hone my own ideas.
Buuut... the philosopher that started it all for ne, as a kid, and still touches more profound and immediate ideas as an adult: Calvin and Hobbes. Yes, a comic strip character was my first inspiration to actually tackle philosophy and inspired my path for my first degree. No philosopher has ever affected me so greatly as the two fictional ones. There are some panels that still naw at me.

Plato and Aristotle are the definition of philosopher and their books are preserved through centuries among Byzantines, Islamic philosophers and Italians. I can quote from some of their works, but maybe later or someone else could possibly help cuz I'm busy. There is many topics in or related to philosophy. Logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, pragmatics, politics etc. ... even history, athletics and meditation.

Not sure. I just came to the conclusion that I'm probably an apatheist. Some guy named Ian von Hegner came up with the term. He a scientist and philosopher but didn't make it to the poll. Atheist, theist, agnostic and "spiritual" don't quite fit for me. There's probably something out there but I pretty much don't care. It's irrelevant to me. I could have picked Nietzsche because some consider he was an apatheist, but since the term didn't exist until 2000 it wouldn't count. Sorry to resurrect this thread but I didn't know where else to discuss it.

Dennet and Chalmers. The arguments are high level, neither of them is right, and yet together they approach truth.
Searle, because language is important.
Descartes, for the unanswered questions.
