For those who have maxed out their UR weapons and are now getting UR variants? How did you do it?
I started playing multiplayer around the time they introduced the variants patch and have been grinding since. I used to only purchase Premium packs until my Rare variant weapons were becoming, on average, half way to X while my Hurricane was still at base level 2. So, then I was just focusing on maxing out all Rares using Expert packs. Now I have maxed all my rare variants and I am only getting boosters from both Premium and Expert packs. So...
Just kept playing, but play the characters you want to play. Try out new things along the way. It's the only way to stay sane with the grind ahead of you. I started about a week after release, after finishing the main story. I only got 1 of every variant something like a week or two ago.
Try to stay on Gold runs at the very least (2 runs for 1 Premium box or it's variants), Platinum if possible (1 run for 1 Premium box or variant). I usually run on Gold as I prefer running strange setups on my kits and can play more casually rather than needing to stay really focused during Platinum play.
For Platinum, try and obtain the Asari Huntress, as it's the Stealth kit that is most forgiving in Platinum as they have Barrier (100% shields when less than 25% health every 15s) and can Stealth Grid as required, giving a player that's less experienced in Platinum a bit more survivability and functionality in Platinum (most objective waves are easier) until they are more confident in use in other kits.
Also, don't forget to obtain and complete as many APEX missions and Daily Challenges as possible for Mission Funds, so when the UR weapon becomes available in the store you can get 1 that way too.
Your only other way is to spend real, hard earned cash. Which I don't recommend now that MEA has basically been abandoned from further development.

If you maxed out all below UR, I suggest to save up to at least 2 millions and buy Jumbo Premiums; you can get up to 5 URs in one pack. I maxed my manifest before variants came out, so my grind wasn't that painful. I had luck to get multiple JPs with 5 URs inside.

I would love to play Gold and Platinum matches all the time if I could. Haven't been able to consistently find Gold matches, let alone Platinum since 8-9 months ago unfortunately. The Asari Huntress is my favourite to play on Platinum. Usually I can successfully extract with a duo team on Platinum while playing as her. With dwindling players and no real incentive to continue, I don't know how long I'll continue to play for.

Is the Jumbo Premium not the exact same as 5x regular Premium Packs? I used to not have much luck when buying Premiums which is why I stopped buying them for a while.
What platform are you on? PC Gold runs has slightly dwindled a bit, but still common enough (unless it's a Silver or Bronze Daily Mission day). Can I assume you are on one of the consoles instead? That would explain a lot in terms of player availability and runs.

Spend Mission Funds exclusively on URs. Don’t buy Expert Packs. They help the booster situation a bit, but the UR drop rate I observed over 60 Expert packs was 8%. The UR drop rate I’ve observed out of hundreds of Premium Packs is very close to 25%, and Premium (including Jumbo) have a pity timer (guaranteed a UR pet million credits), while Expert Packs do not. You won’t hit the pity timer often, but it’s good to have it.
A good strategy is to save to 1 million credits (buy Ammo Priming and Supply packs as needed, but nothing else), then buy Premiums (regular, Arsenal, or Reserves, consistently per buying session) until you hit a UR, then start saving again. You can also do this with Jumbo Premiums, but I have less experience with that.
As for getting games, learn to Solo, and keep the party open. Vanelsa has a host of YouTube videos (poke around in this forum for links) showing exactly how to Solo Gold and Platinum. Successfully Soloing requires luck in objectives, but if you keep the party open, you should pretty frequently (although not always) pick up a team as you go to help through tough Wave 6 objectives.
Start with his videos, and learn how to Solo, for example, Sandstorm. He has a technique (I call it “the Algorithm”) for that nap. Most maps actually have one, but Sandstorm’s is the most obvious. What I mean is a strategy for rotating through the map, from one defensive position to another, hitting ammo boxes on the way (they refill every few minutes). Start with Bronze to get acclimated, but you can quickly move to Silver and Gold. Once you’ve Solo’d some Gold, you’ll know if Platinum is a good idea. A lot of maps also feature a “Stronghold” position - a spot a reasonably tanky character can just hold without having to leave. This can also be a good Solo strategy (although I find it dry).
Anyway, Soloing is enormous fun. It sounds sort of scary at first, but you will learn so much about the game. Plus, some stuff is easier. For example, sniping is a lot easier in a Solo. You’re on host, by definition, and enemies tend to come straight at you (they hop around some, of course, but I find them harder to hit in a chaotic multiplayer game). And quite often, you pick up a team anyway.
I have thoughts on characters for Solos, but this post is already too long. Open up a convo in the solo’s thread. It is a good, fun, credit production strategy.

Haven't been on for about 3 months, but manifest is 40% through on UR variants, or more, don't really remember. BUT!
Maxing manifest is easy, you just have to understand the most effective way to make $$$. You are going to open a lot of packs of disappointment, so might be better to focus on something else. After a while, my focus became being the top score (I know), getting fastest pug run (never played "in" a squad) and trying to master the shit system of headshots in this game.
Key plan, is to spend as little time playing per game as possible. Last time I played the average pug mentality was 15 minute gold matches were "fast." If your gold matches are over 11m30s someone is wasting your time. 14m for platinum matches. 5 Golds per hour or 4 platinums per hour should be your goal.
If you can, get a squad of "grinders" who are reliable and hopefully fun to play with. If your speedrunning quick games and laughing while playing its the best experience and you will cap your URs in no time. If your pugging it.... be the person who can insure you get your gold as quickly as possible.
Now this is a whole page worth of things, being on BSN though is the 1st step, don't be one of the people who don't know the games mechanics. Although social network, BSN is a knowledge storehouse of the game. Learn how things work, when they work, "if" they work.
And for the LOVE OF THE FUCKING GODS, DO NOT PLAY STEALTH CHARACTERS.
If your want to be progressive, learn to play "Debuff" characters. Hiding from the enemy does not win games, it just increases the time your playing them. Debuff the hell out of everything, and you won't need to hide.

I know at least one australian dude who is almost every day of the week online, and usually plays gold/platinum, on PC. I've played with him and he's a good player, played in his lobby, had a bit of a lag but not too bad if one kept more careful playstyle (I'm from Finland, so another side of the planet) :

Well... IMHO you can play stealth character but more like a saving angel, stealthing when reviving team mates from a bad place, stealthing when doing fast objectives just before the place and such.
Debuffing is really important in the game, meaning snapfreeze the hell out of everyone, dont detonate until the last seconds if possible. Invasion on every enemy ASAP with the virulent evolution will benefit everyone on platinum. Warp immediately when you can, higher level enemies.

This is true IF you have a good team of 4. But only if. Even then, on Platinum, I like to have one Avenger in the team. Also, if you need Stealth to survive on Plat, it is better than not playing at all. I know I needed my safety blanket for quite a while. (And if you don’t have a good team, by all means, grab a stealth kit.)
Another good YouTube channel for team of 4 speedruns is ZeusFuryOmega’s. They do lots of Plat runs with no stealth.
If you're stealthing all the time, then all you do is draw aggro onto your team mates. Not ideal, so I do agree with RonnieBlastoff there.
But your goal should be closer to what @unicephalon 40-D is suggesting anyway, using Stealth during moments when it's required (when you get swarmed and the dps just isn't quite enough to clear yet) so you can all clear out of the kill zone quickly and safely enough. Or for objectives. Or for Extraction.
Or... Most importantly, when everyone else DC's (or lags death) and you end up on your own. Unless you have crazy skills on hand you can trust to rely on (and it doesn't sound like it just yet) for Platinum runs, Stealth is an excellent fallback position to utilise whilst you wait for others to reconnect or join in, or to safely and slowly (but surely) clear the wave on your own. I've ran into this last issue more times than I can count, and it's much easier for poor connections when Stealth is on hand to recover such situations. And from the sounds of things, it may help considering your locale appears to have less players now, and joining players are likely further away (that the game servers kick more easily).

Well... It costs same and you get same amount of cards, but chance to get UR card in five PPs is a row is slim to none, but you can get more than one UR cards in JPs quite often.
Regarding things others said... Just to add... Use Infiltrator's Cloak to boost your weapons and powers damage and for objectives and revives, leave Stealth Grid at 1 point because both Avenger and Huntress benefit more from other two powers, use SG same way as Cloak. If you rely just on stealth during hacks/uploads you will loose more than you will win.
Personally, as someone who solos a lot, I appreciate having a stealth/cloak character on the team when I PUG. Most teams cannot tank a Platinum hack or upload objective.
In those situations —and if I am playing a non-stealth character — I am fine taking all the aggro to give the stealth character a relaxing time in the circle(s). I also try my best not to eliminate enemies unless absolutely necessary. Crowd controlling them — freezing, pulling, stunning, etc. via my powers — ensures they aren’t attack me nor respawning near the circle(s).
To answer the OP’s question, the grind is real. If your desire is great, you will grind as long as it takes to get those weapons and characters. If you are tiring of the grind, I would find another game to play, to be honest. I knew that if I just played for credits, it would get boring real fast. That’s why I stated soloing and posting my videos up on YouTube. Now, long after I am done playing this game, I can rewatch them and remember how much fun this game was. And, those that are still playing can learn from my vids on successfully solo Platinum with any character in the game.

It's nice to have one SG character on Platinum just in case, but in 90% cases there is at least one pug who will break stealth all the time, or lead enemies to the circle. I also prefer Huntress.
I also agree with the sentiments about the grind. It is intense. If you’re just playing to max out a manifest, there are better, healthier things to do with your time. You have to be always aware in modern games that they exploit addictive technologies and they build the game around making money in micro transactions with “whales” that can’t help themselves and overspend like crazy. That’s just gaming in the modern world.
I try to be really cognizant of this and make sure I’m playing for fun and not responding to an addiction mechanism. Personally, I really enjoy the combat and building characters and futzing with builds and setups. I’ve always loved that about Mass Effect. I never played MP until MEA, and I really like it because it lets me avoid having to sit through endless dialogue and cutscenes and resource gathering in the single player. I just get to jump straight to combat and I love that. I just wish there were more MP characters (at the uncommon level, LOL) and that they had brought even more of the single player build and crafting system to the MP.
Most teams cannot tank a Platinum hack or upload objective.
And this is why I usually run as Huntress on PUG games, I like her more than Avenger and Infiltrators.
I prefer the Avenger myself because I’m constantly using Avenger Strike to stun and melee those dastardly Saboteurs and Berserkers. I usually go to 4 ranks in Stealth Grid on her to get a little extra duration for Hacks and Uploads.
Off topic, sort of, but if you go to six in Stealth Grid it isn’t hard to spec and build for high-damage weapons (e.g. Dhan, Black Widow) to one-shot grunts in Gold when firing out of cloak, and I *really* like doing that...

Infiltrator's Cloak is better for that. Lance/Throw and Avenger Strike are very powerful and useful when maxed out, more than SG is.
I'd recommend the Angara Avenger normally too, but I've been in a few Platinum runs where another Stealther would decide to do something really poor for the team; Like continue to aggro a boss mob (Destroyer that's charging, etc) and then they decide to stealth before they fire (instead of just hiding behind cover without stealth). And the Boss unit decides to snipe me from the other side of the map because I'm the next one visible to it. In cases like that, having Barrier saving you is much better I feel. But the Huntress of course also lacks direct skills to handle heavy armor units. So it's a toss up between the two depending on circumstances that are normally outside your control.
If you are the only stealth unit. Avenger or Huntress is great. If there's another and they're not familiar with dealing with Boss unit charge attacks yet (like above), Huntress is better. Especially on One Life to Live. If it's a friend or someone experienced with Stealth play, Avenger is better for more skills to deal with groups or armored units. If it's One Life to Live, Huntress. You can slowly whittle down regenerating enemies even like Berserkers with weapons fire, but you can't do anything if you were hit from the other side of the map with 0 reaction time to do anything about it. If it's all friends, go as Ronnie said: pick up a debuffer someone else hasn't chosen yet. (Unless of course if it's One Life to Live again, in which case, it's back to the Huntress )

Cloak is indeed great for that - you get the bonus for more than one shot, so you can miss once, or maybe get a couple of grunts. But. Cloak isn’t on demand. So, trade offs. For me, especially in Solos, I really value the zero cool down you get from SG. In team games, it matters a lot less.

Hmmm... I’m quite sure that I do 90% more damage with the cloak on - grunts go to just below half health without it, to dead with it from a BW/Dhan shot (depending on my spec - sometimes I’m a bit cheap with boosters and they go to a tiny sliver of health instead).
