I think this is fine for a game of this generation.
Does it have anything to do with all the negative things people have been saying?

The game actually got a downgrade (on PS4Pro) via one of the patches. It still looks good, but looked even better at launch in most ways.
Edit: There are now 10 of these bunk-ass threads cluttering page 1. I’d wager there are 7-8 each on the next few pages.

I noticed in one of Alec's memories that Sara looks a lot better now than she did at launch. Perhaps more like her face model, as Scott already did.

Accurate lighting that's presented similar to that in the real world using shaders. It's a DX11+ only feature.
ME1-ME3 used lightmaps, which were textures, not actual shaders, except for the point lights that were used to light up a room.
It did have some lighting shaders (eg. the "god rays" viewed from the Citadel Tower, or the spherical harmonic lighting used in ME2 and ME3).

You can apply this to any part of the game really.
Your opinion of something is influenced by what you've been exposed to. You spend some time away from something, the weight of what other people say matters much less.
Incidentally, this is why people think older games are greater. Not only was it likely to be their first experience (so a blank slate really), back then social media wasn't the craze it was today. People could actually experience the story and form their own opinions.
It's why I've decided to never participate in any video game discussion as soon as the 1st trailer hits. It'll be less fun for sure, but I want to experience the game as I would and not as others would like me to. I loathe that MEA was ruined for me by the social media craze.
Got back into it for a second playthrough again (after all this time), and I'm actually enjoying it much more than I did originally. Who knew?
In short, crowdsourcing your opinion of a game is a terrible idea.

crowdsourcing your opinion of a game is a terrible idea. So much this. I put around 600 hours into MEA (4 playthroughs plus multiplayer) it's gorgeous looking. As a game, I think it's better than average, just not to the same standard as the trilogy. I struggle to view assessments of it being 'a pile of shit' other than unthinking mob reactions to the janky memes at launch. Yet the jank was of BioWare's making. The game wasn't quite ready at launch, the animations were a bit off, the story wasn't quite A-grade and the game's reputation paid the price.

I agree those were problems at release, but I don't think the game's reputation paid nearly as high of a price that we might down the line. People are always complaining about how by the numbers games seem to be anymore. If people are going to lose their minds over a game that wasn't completely ready at launch, I could see publishers and developers having a hard time thinking of taking that risk. In some ways it why the rumors of Half-Life 3 not being made because of Mass Effect 3's reception have some people thinking it could be related, even with zero evidence of that.

the lesson from ME:A should be that it's probably better to delay a game than shove it at the market when it isn't ready. I agree. - Make sure the game is finished.
- Make sure the game economy won't piss everyone off.
- Make sure it's actually an interesting and enjoyable game.
A lot of good work was already done on MEA.
If the launch had been put back to an end of year holiday release (8 months delay), and some big guns from Edmonton had added some stronger story beats and dealt with animation. (the gameplay was pretty sound)
Things might have been different.

Things might have been different. Even 6 months more with the full team would've put it in a better state than it was at release. When they released the last patch they should've used it as a springboard as a relaunch of sorts.

When they released the last patch they should've used it as a springboard as a relaunch of sorts. They did try that to a degree by reopening the 10-hour free trial at that point and launching some ads that we all about encouraging people to revisit the game. At that point though, the internet was still so intent on dumping memes and shit on the game that the revisit campaign just seemed to get buried.
I'd add to SofaJockey's list that it's probably a good ideal to not screw around with the pre-release press embargo deadlines while at the same time trying to mix in a public free trial of the game. The confusion just didn't help the situation.
SofaJockey: I think ME:A's SP economy was actually better than most I've seen. The Mass Effect 2, 3 and A are at least games where I'm not encouraged to overtly farm for cash. I would also say it's is an interesting and enjoyable game. Two out of three ain't bad.

Visuals was never the issue.....story and characters was always the core issue with Andromeda. Art direction and design was astounding even when Andromeda dropped on day 1.
ME2 and 3 to this day still have weird character animations that pop up every now and then...i've experienced a few with my recent play-throughs of 2 and 3, yet the story and characters are what kept the overall experience compelling.
To this day i can still play Silent Hill 2 and 3 (Ps2 games) even tho the visuals may not be on the gaming level of what we see today, but the art direction, characters and story still deliver a compelling and interesting decent into the depth of madness and the disturbing imagery that was implemented, fleshed out the entire experience.
Again, Andromeda was an amazing looking game even before the 1st patch came through,....those animation issues was not the core issue that plagued Andromeda....sure some clowns on youtube tried to make a big issue out of it, but if the story and characters was more compelling and interesting, those minor animation issues would not have been a problem for the game at all.
