I get the efficiency angle. To me that's mostly irrelevant however. I want to have fun. And as long as the mission is successful I don't care if it takes me a bit longer to kill stuff. No point building a crazy damage output character when it's zero fun to play. This time around I'm playing with friends. So we usually try to complement each other's powers. We are fairly slow, gold matches take about 25-28min. But that's fine. We're having a blast. We often do themed matches too. All vorcha, all krogan, all asari etc. All Valkyrie is especially fun! But even when I was pugging it on Xbox I did as well as everyone else. Some of the skilled infiltrators outclass everyone else of course. But I never felt like power builds were inferior. In fact the fastest games were usually an all biotics team. Since you play with friends, I suggest at least once running Glacier with Snap Freeze (preferably Paladin) and Electric Slash or Shockwave, both with Geth Scanner equipped, on a more open map, triple chain overload works even better, but on Glacier, hitting through walls for multiple detonations can make for some very fast Gold matches (and usually gives non-missile killstreaks, especially vs Geth). Use a Slayer with the Snap Freeze kit: Phase Disruptor spam may be even better than Triple Overload for this, and he also has Biotic Slash for the wall-banging... Also: Arc Grenade kit + Snap Freeze kit= loooooooooooooooooolsoeasy

The N7 Slayer is an interesting character that can, I suppose, be built/played in a number of ways; I'm curently using the following build link but wonder if I'm missing something. Sure, I get plently of fire explosions on mooks from the Acolyte (with Incendiary ammo) followed by Biotic Charge or Phase diruptor, and big armour's shields are stripped by the Acolye and then I tend to switch to the Hurricane for more fire explosions detonated by either Phase Disruptor or Biotic Charge -- but am I missing a build that's more effective and/or more fun? The slayer is pretty fragile (and I don't like to spam Biotic Slash through walls because that gets old pretty quick ). So I wonder - how do you guys and grills like to build and play your N7 Slayer?

This is my favourite biotic slash-less build, though I usually switch a phalanx in for gold pugs to spice things up. He is one of the friendlier off-host vanguards, but you really need to play him on-host to unlock its potential without too much frustration! I prefer to take things slow in this game, but with the Slayer, that goes out of the window, and it's all about hitting hard and fast! I personally don't like the Acolyte, and I find on the Slayer, the charge time bothers with the fluidity (or chaos, I guess) of the kit. The Talon hits hard, but most importantly, it has a really high chance of priming. Much of your damage comes from the tech bursts resulting from alternating pistol fire with Phase Disruptor/Biotic charge. Using disruptor ammo, I prefer to switch out pistol power amp and power amps for piercing mod/cyclonics for more armour damage and survivability, and I don't really feel like I am sacrificing much in terms of damage. Spam your powers to do damage, to stagger, and to re-charge your barriers. Always be aware of where you could either charge or dodge to get to safety. Abuse your dodge! On smaller maps especially, it is your most powerful tool, and can allow you to play in an incredibly aggressive style, by phasing in and out of a firefight. In a team game, try to remain aware of what your teammates are doing, and use your detonators accordingly. IMO the Slayer pairs better with tech teams (phase disruptor is wonderful for rapid-fire tech detonations, just ask any BatSol ); even when spamming pistol shots and overriding primers, you can quickly peel your tech burst off, then right away detonate whatever was under it. The Slayer is a wonderful kit, in part because there is no definite way to play it. I, for example, couldn't live without efficient blast (PD evo 5), but I know and have seen others do great with knockdown as well. I think it's all about finding the best build for your playstyle

Also: Arc Grenade kit + Snap Freeze kit= loooooooooooooooooolsoeasy Whilst you're not wrong, any of those combos will do well, the whole point of Slash/Shockwave/Overload is the multidetonations, an Arc grenade or Phase Disruptor will detonate a single explosion, and remove the other primings in its radius, Slash/Shockwave/Overload will detonate up to 3 explosions at a time. Makes little difference vs mooks, and only some versus mid-tier enemies, but with the bossess, the multidetonations are really noticable. As to the Slayer convo, he's one of those kits where the build varies little, but the playstyle can vary wildly from player to player, personally I 4/4 Slash/Passive, but that's only because I like Biotic Slash (No, I don't spam it), it has enough situational utility that I can't not take it, but I also don't want to gimp PD by skipping passive entirely. 3/5 and 4/4 are pretty similar in terms of overall effectiveness, unless you NEVER use Slash, in which case Rank 6 Weapon Damage is excellent (Esp on Hurricane/Talon build). Scorpion is also an interesting gun for him, can be fun.

And to add to it, if you haven't tried it already, the Tempest (or Geth Pulse Rifle if you want to be more lore-y) is a great gun for the Geth Engineer. Personally, I'd run either no passive (using Hunter mode as an "alternative passive") or passive/turret, which would give hunter mode's accuracy bonus, making the Tempest an absolute beast. Especially with Incendiary or Disruptor ammo, for the extra explosions. And then when you get it, Hurricane plays exactly the same way, just with about 4x the damage, and 5x the ammo problems Or, you can use Overload+Mantis, which is also a hell of a lot of fun. Overload to strip shields and stun/stagger, Mantis headshot to finish them off. As for the Geth Infiltrator, Geth Plasma Shotgun is a lore-friendly alternative (also good for scaring team members, because hunters are scary, rage-inducing monsters), whilst Piranha is an absolute beast on him (again, the hunter mode accuracy thing). Claymore is fun, but punishing, if you miss, you die, but also massive one-hit-kill potential. Talon is a widely considered OP option on him too, although I personally found it underwhelming. GI makes an amazing Shotgun infiltrator, just need to practice the Proxy Mine stun, shotgun cleanup method. Or, Javelin GI is crazy too, doesn't even need fitness, hides in corners, with piercing mods, kill enemies through pretty much every wall in the game. Oh, and if your problem with hunter mode is the white overlay and not the red highlighting, there are texture mods out there for PC, that whilst a little annoying to get working, completely remove the white crap from your screen, allowing you to benefit from the skill, without the eyebleed. Not trying to force you to use hunter mode or anything (wow, I sounded like a fanboy here), just trying to offer alternatives, even without hunter mode, the Geth Enginner is great, Tempest is still amazing on him (Also on the TSol, if you haven't tried it). Don't underestimate the Tempest because it's "only an uncommon", it's a tiny beast. For whatever reason I never found the Talon to be that op on the GI, really good yes, but not op. For me there are two op builds for the GI: Raider and Harrier. If you want to make gold easy mode use the Harrier GI, you'd probably double the score of a Harrier TGI. Proxy debuff, Cloak, more accurate Harrier and you can wipe a spawn from across a map. With AMIII for speed or CMIV for tank it's my go to if I want to trivialize gold. I also really love the Crusader on it as well. I finally remembered to use the Claymore Fury last night and she just destroyed Collectors with Warp IV and SAII. I never really used Dark Channel, but it was nice to use on a target at range to have a boom boom ready to go and with Warp IV the High Lord was even more brutal. Standard 66653 build with AMIII and I think I only went down 3 or 4 times the whole match.

Sure, the tradeoff is for AoE-detonators with no cooldown that can be spammed more or less indefinitely (PD also does some nice direct/non-combo damage to armor), which is arguably just as good as multi-combos especially if you're playing with PUGs or without mics.

But if you don't think Talon GI is OP as well, you need to watch Heldarion's videos. Just ridiculous.

What about the GI/Piranha? I've always heard that was the classic OP setup...

What about the GI/Piranha? I've always heard that was the classic OP setup... Yeah I believe that was basically the original OP setup. I wasn't around MP at the very beginning but my understanding was that on release the Piranha was like, THE overpowered game-breaking roflstomp gun in this game (and so naturally you put it on the GI), but then they nerfed it to its current state, which is still one of the better guns but by no means a uniquely OP or game-breaking gun. Still one of the better shotguns and definitely really really strong on the GI (like the Raider, the huge spread was supposed to be what balances out its huge damage: with Hunter Mode's accuracy upgrades, you get to have your cake and eat it too).

I've seen the videos of how good it can be; I was just saying for me personally the Harrier or Raider are more op than the Talon for whatever reason. Another newer one I tried last night was Cryo Falcon HE with combat drone, Geth was easy peasy.

I always thought GI was most deadly with the Javelin. I would like have Proxy Mine on him, but couldn't find a way to work it into the build. I have everything maxed and Proxy at zero.
I tried the Demolisher with Valkryie and Venom. Good god is this character ridiculous. Nothing gives her trouble. And as much as I hate the Geth, its almost sad how badly Demolisher crushes them. Also tried the Destroyer with M8 Avenger for fun. Its surprisingly not bad actually. But its not really fun though.

GI with javelin can be a challenging setup to use. Not to be rude though, it's a bit weird to not have proxy mine when using the Javelin GI setup, only because you miss out on having a stagger power, a power that is the bane of phantoms at long range plus the damage taken debuff . Not saying you can't make that setup work without using PM, it's up to you. Back to it being challenging. What I can say from my experience from using the GI javelin setup, is just take any kind of shot anywhere, you don't have to put yourself in so much unnecessary pressure to go for headshots only, abuse right hand advantage it will be your best friend, take advantage of the Javelin's natural piercing on top of piercing you get from the sniper HVB mod, and lastly enemies in cover are easy targets with the Javelin. Also the reason I said PM is the bane of phantoms is because of a neat trick you can do, by staying at a good distance away, and firing off the PM at a phantom, you should trigger her bubble, and her bubble counts as a hitbox for the phantom, making her an easy target for the Javelin.

And also to back up what @bestvolussupportau said, there's no way I would ever try to run a Javelin GI without Proxy Mine. I'm not intending to be rude either, but it's just a fact that you absolutely need it for the times when those 2 or 3 Husks are bearing down on you, as well as for assistance dealing with Phantoms as he described. The value of its debuff on Bosses alone outweighs any benefit from extra Health points, and I can't even begin to imagine the pain of a Collectors match with a Jav but no PM. Funnily enough, Heldarion's Talon videos were the initial inspiration for me to begin my alt account odyssey, as I knew I already had a GI who could not and would not be parted from his Javelin and this setup. Other builds will work with other weapons, but I would go so far as to say that if you know you want to try the Javelin on the GI, this is the build. I still haven't worked out how to do multiquotes, but want to add: DistigousForest - regarding your Cryo Falcon HE, it could be inferred from your observation that some people might actually give consideration to going into battle as a Human Engineer without a Combat Drone. Those people are fools and should be eaten. It's a great HE setup (as with the GE) but I can't read a sentence which mentions a Cryo Falcon and Geth without acknowledging the wonder of the Volus Merc in such circumstances. Probably fun enough to (almost) justify presetting the toasters as the enemy faction. Almost. What's funnier than a Volus Merc against Geth? Two Volus Mercs. Or 4 or even 8. Along with 4 Drones and the stagger provided by the Falcon, not to mention Cloaking, it's a great fun option for payback for all the years of Geth stunlocking BS. Let's get paid!!!

Volus Merc is brilliant vs Geth, nothing like locking down the Triple Primes on Geth Platinum, and pretty sure no other character can lock them down as well. Also, I third the GI Jav build, and second Grunt's changes (Phasics and double piercing mods). If you don't mind pre-setting a map, Ghost is a good map for it, use the walls to your advantage, the enemies cannot hit through them - you CAN, and you can also see through them, and with the Javelin, at ANY range, based on penetration distance (There are a few discrepencies with actual penetration vs scope penetration, but these are mere technicalities). Of course, a really good sniper can also own Rio, but Rio sucks for objectives.

Heh, my standard HE build has no Combat Drone. Too much spam of Overload and Incinerate to be bothered by the drone, plus all 6 points in fitness allows me to take a Power Amp to plat, where Drone isn't much help, instead of a Cyclonic.

Heh, my standard HE build has no Combat Drone. Too much spam of Overload and Incinerate to be bothered by the drone, plus all 6 points in fitness allows me to take a Power Amp to plat, where Drone isn't much help, instead of a Cyclonic. There was a time when I had 8 active Human Engineers, only one of whom didn't have a Drone. He was the one I rarely played! Fitness is for scrubs, remember , so I respectively (edit: and respectfully, obviously) disagree with you about the value of the Drone on Plat, with the qualification that I really don't play much Plat. That said, I've probably played more waves with the HE than all the other vanilla Humans combined and multiplied by 5, and my HE has always been in the top 5 of my 'go to' Plat characters - my only ever wipe with him was post-credits wave 10 Hydra Collectors, on PS4. The value of the Drone doesn't really come from its damage output, so much as its ability to distract and stagger enemies - similar in a way to Overload itself, which does pretty limited actual damage, but happily leaves enemies vulnerable to a headshot - especially if you stop at 4 ranks as I often do. The mathematical variations in the HE's builds are second to none in complexity, with weapon weight affecting his own combo effectiveness, which power amps don't boost anyway, so I think it's slightly counter-intuitive to favour them in a no-Drone build. Again though, I'll admit that my expertise with those permutations is mostly centered around Gold. This is a discussion which has gone on for many years, so I'm not trying to persuade you (or anyone else) that you're 'wrong' to go with no Drone, but I personally haven't found any build where skipping it works more effectively. It's also worth noting that the Drone can (and has, many times in my case) clutch waves on its own. I remember one of my early Gold solos was successful entirely because of it, and it reminded me that you're never alone with a Drone!

I was never a fan of drone OR decoy until I took a Volus Sentinel to Platinum. And would never use a Power Amp on a HE (especially a no-drone build), I'd much rather use a Power Efficiency Mod and take a slightly heavier weapon (Or to hell with it all, Wraith+Andrenaline Mod is never wrong). Drone and Decoy are really only used for their Detonate/Explode evos. For Drone, this means a 4/4 split with Passive or Fitness, depending on Preference, for a Combo based HE, I'd go with Passive(Weight Capacity), but if you like guns, go full Passive and shoot all the things. Unlike a lot of the BSN, I don't consider a no-Drone (or no-Decoy) build "wrong" (I usually have one of each, or both with Drone, one with No-Incinerate with a Scorpion/Venom/Falcon, for reasons). Drone has great utility, but if you don't like it (or forget to use it), it doesn't have a place in the build. A lot like Hawk-Missile-Launcher vs Multi-Frag-Grenades, a lot of people argue having MFGs "just in case" and then never use them, at all, ever, when HML is 300DPS+Stagger (Never ever spec Cobra, always Hydra), if you're not using something, it's not worth the points. Same applies to ANY power, if you don't use it, don't spec it, the points WILL be spent better elsewhere. Also, not that this is a recent build or anything, but my Destroyer point reminded me of it. This isn't a build you play normally, it's for those occasions that you want something "different", Destroyer Build Link, now go have fun trolling the enemies (and allies).

Here is my HE build. PAIV gives me almost 500 more damage vs armor with Incinerate and almost 1000 vs shield/barrier with Overload and comes very close to stripping a Phantom from full barrier. As far as drone goes I can go without it because I don't use it and it interferes with my flow of Overload>Incineate. I'm sure I could go with a Paladin or Arc Pistol with Power Magnifier and get up near the 4000 needed to fully strip a Phantom :amirite: giggity. My only other odd build o can think off is the no Seeker Swarm ACA hybrid soldier build because fuck that long animation.

Its not rude. As I said, I am still sort of new to this mode and I haven't experimented with builds as much as I should have. I would have never thought to try Fury/Claymore. Trying it led to my favorite build in the game (Fury/Crusader). So that's why I like coming here.
And I was also coming off the Turian Soldier where Proxy Mine is really unnecessary I feel. So, I thought it was similar for the GI. But I will rebuild this guy because the Phantoms were an issue and I could only deal with them with the Javelin if they weren't focused on me. Though, I did have issues hitting Abominations and Husks when they were closing in. So, thanks, I will try this tonight.

Yeah Proxy Mine on the GI is sort of a must, at least to rank 5: its debuff makes stuff die even faster, and its a nice stagger for those annoying melee units when you're sniping (husks, abombs, goons, etc.).. If you're taking Tactical Cloak to rank 6 (I rarely snipe so mine stays at rank 4), the usual build is to take Proxy to rank 5 and Fitness to rank 3, you can use a Cyclonic if you're worried about squishiness since the GI doesn't benefit much from power damage and has high base shields so he gets a nice boost from Cyclonics (and if you're sniping you benefit less from Adrenaline Mod than you do if you're playing, say, a shotgun infiltrator).

Well, I put Proxy Mine on the GI. And am still using the Javelin. The GI went from a moderately fun class without Proxy Mine to an "OMG this guy is a killing machine wtf." I don't need to tell you guys this, but proxy mine helped A LOT. Like this makes Phantoms a literal joke. I can add this to the list of characters alongside Cerberus Adept, Fury, and Shadow as character that I have no problem dealing with Phantoms even on host.
And q5tyhj, I generally tend to use Cyclonic Mod for him. But the thing is, with proxy mine, this is the most stealthy I have been with an Infiltrator next to the Shadow. I am generally stealthy with infiltrators (as they should be), but I tend to do the best with the Shadow based on how I built her. But I rarely got put into tight spots thanks to Proxy Mine and playing smart.
Also, I noticed with the Javelin, I tend to miss a lot of shots at the start of the round, but as I get used to it, I build some kind of rhythm and I hit shots that even surprise me. I don't know how to explain it. But thanks Urizen for that build. I copied it and it works amazingly.

Yesterday I did some experiments and just put a Javelin or Black Widow on every kit I played. Quarian Engineer? Give the lady a Javelin. Human Engineer? He gets one as well. Asasi Adept? Why not try a Black Widow...

Same exact build for me, though I usually go for Phasic ammo along with the additional piercing mod. On gold I tend to do the same, but seeing as I rarely sport the Jav GI there, it rarely ever happens. The Jav GI is my go to kit for plat. On other Diffis I find him just to be too op.

Why not try a Black Widow... Javelin on improbable kits? This reminds me of the time i used the Javelin on the Volus Vanguard with Explosive Ammos on London/Geth/Platinum with Sonashii doing the same but with Spitfire instead. 0 sinergy between powers, passives, equipment. His idea, of course.
