It failed for YOU but not in sales. You realise in the comment you quoted that I was talking about the failure of AAA games in general right? And when a game gets it's DLC cancelled, becomes an internet meme, and the whole studio has their jobs 'relocated', it's a failure. Thank you!

I'm sure from their POV it really matters that it shipped in such a crowded space affecting its critical success and even word of mouth... but c'mon. Even had it launched in a dead month the awkwardness of MEA's nature would've been unbearable for both them and us. The good thing about MEA's disastrous launch being where it was was exactly that much of the attention went elsewhere rather than garnering up a more monumental laughing stock for it.

Here are the relevant tweets: Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah
- First off, the question was not “is MEA secretly a great game and did mean Nintendo make us fail?” MEA is a deeply flawed game. Especially at launch.
- But the review environment was crowded. Nier, Nioh, Horizon, and Zelda all launched in MEAs window. Each does something better than MEA (again, a flawed game).
- As a result, even systems that are pretty decent get scrutinized against superiorly implemented ones. Does launching in a different window turn 72% into 90? Certainly not. 72 into 77/78? Maybe.
- Does that affect sales? Some. But word of mouth matters so much these days.
- And here’s the thing. That’s the nature of the industry. You don’t have full control over when you launch and no control over when others do. DAI benefited by how tough a year 2014 turned out to be for games.
- You launch the best game you can. MEA has a lot of problems and got lapped by genuinely better games.
- I certainly think it was a mistake to have the review embargo lift AFTER the early access hit
- Yes: [even disregarding the animation errors, the game still had problems.]
- The flaws of MEA and DA2 are kind of opposites. They are interesting to compare to each other.
- [Commenting on MEA's engine' and 'scope']: It was too big.
[comments in brackets are the words of others being reacted to]
Interesting read. Personally I got through mea because I ended up liking peebee a lot. The animation issue always seemed overegged to me but maybe that’s as animation was never a big draw to bioware games for me. i’m assuming By opposites to da2 he’s talking about story and character.

Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah- I’m going to regret this in half an hour but let’s talk “did MEA get a fair shake”
Edit: Took out the rambling bit that didn't really make sense. ______________________________________ One perspective may have been "Strike while the iron is hot." That can be a valid way of looking at it when making sequels, but it is primarily driven by financial motivations. Mass Effect probably needed more time before a follow-up was going to get a "fair shake" from an art/creative perspective. The technical flaws could be (and were) ironed out over time. But creatively, I think they could have benefitted from a lengthier break between games, and the audience probably needed a bit more time to re-visit the series with fresh or objective eyes.

I'd say no game with that amount of hype could get a fair shot. That's not to say the criticism of it is unfair, it's certainly not, but we put it under a microscope the second we got our hands on it. Again, not that you need a microscope to find flaws.

Was there an election? Who said that either of you speak for me? While I have a huge respect for both of you but I am sick and tied of fans, critics, and cultural commenters thinking that speak for me when they don't.
You want to speak for me? Then run for political office and get my vote, then you speak for me. Otherwise stop thinking that you speaking for everybody in any fandom because you don't.
To quote Grunt from ME2 "I'll speak for myself!"
