Oh, well, Karpishin came and left, now it's turn of creative directors. Yes, I know, "Anthem will be fine, nothing has changed, it's all normal". Still, sad, though that another veteran of BW is leaving.

After 22 years it would be hard to conclude that the guy hasn't done his time. (moving to BioWare News section, as we could just as usefully discuss his other game contributions than Anthem).

He's the guy I'd hoped would take Laidlaw's position on Dragon Age. Oh well

My bad. Though, the last game he was working on was Anthem. Thought it's kind of related to the Anthem's forums.

Not an issue at all. There's a case for the discussion in both places. 22 years at any firm is quite a time, though.

Thanks for the heads up, I know to start purging my feeds of people starting to make videos of how instrumental he was to BioWare and how BioWare is going to crash and burn without him while not putting any context into the content besides their personal opinions.
Edit: Too late, the first three videos on my YouTube feed were about this. I wonder when people would start talking more about every developer that leaves a company.

Hate to see him go, but working 22 years any where is a very, very long time. It looks like he is forming his own indie gaming studio just like Amy Henning has. I think a lot of those developers are seeing the potential in making games in a market that promises to be very lucrative. I guess if EA doesn't want to make those "niche single player" games then they will.So it sounds like very smart decision on his part. His current project does look promising as well. www.arcanumworlds.com/

This is the new direction of gaming - smaller, tighter studios with a common vision and no corpirate overlords to answer to. Amy makes amazing games, I imagine she will make more amazing games surrounded by her people, people that chose her as much as she chose them. In this time, why do we need massive corporations in every consumer arena? It makes no sense, and I honestly believe it is the least efficient and least profitable way to make quality games. The corporation has demands, to people that only care about money. Fuck those people - invest in graphene or pencil patents or whatever the fuck else. Let EA die already.

It's amazing to see for once that people aren't immediately freaking out about this.
I thought it was a rule of the industry that nobody was allowed to retire ever, and no new talent was allowed in. Lol.

Lol. Well...after so many other long time BioWare devs left in the middle of development, it's getting to the point where it is more surprising that developers are staying rather than leaving.

Predictably, Yong mines James Ohlen's departure as more of the usual 'fuck EA'. I found the level of stupid higher than even the rich vein I've come to expect.
EDIT: If I sound irritated, it's because the Edmonton office could have a change of 'lunch van' and it would be reasons of 'concern' for BioWare and 'fuck EA'.

Just because you don't like what EA offers due to its size doesn't mean everyone does. The smaller studio idea I think is a razor edge of success or oblivion and Ninja Theory demonstrated that with Hellblade. The way I took the statements from them it took nearly all three of the prime selling months to break even and now they have become part of Microsoft Studios. My guess is if any of those smaller studios you are talking about find any level of success they will join a publisher like EA so they don't have the hassle of publishing the game.

Did really that many people leave mid-development? We see some devs, including long-term devs, from Anthem leave in past months and I suspect that's mostly because the project is nearing to an end - nevermind that it's logical to see some people reach the end of their contracts or retire/move to different things that they may have planned months or years ahead before the game got delayed.

the Edmonton office could have a change of 'lunch van' and it would be reasons of 'concern' for BioWare and 'fuck EA'. Whoa whoa, wait a minute. They're using a lunch van? A LUNCH VAN? A van who's only purpose is to distribute food in exchange for currency, that kind of lunch van? Oh dear me. Dearie dearie me. This does not bode well at all. NOT AT ALL. *walks off in horror* ... THEY'RE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED! *sobs* An affectionate remembrance of Bioware who died at Edmonton 15th July 2018 from Lunch Van related occurences Deeply lamented by a large circle of friends and acquaintances RIP

If I sound irritated, it's because the Edmonton office could have a change of 'lunch van' and it would be reasons of 'concern' for BioWare and 'fuck EA'. Isn't it what happened (to an extent) when Bioware was temporarily closing its online store not so long ago? Nevermind shutting the BSN...

BSN didn't make sense, nor did the one before that (where you could download the Gibbed Save Game editor). Then again, this board seems less controversial and definitely more lenient than the old one. I don't get the online store thing, though. As long as BioWare is putting out new games, they're likely to have clothes and such to sell.

How should I know? I'm not someone who sells game merchandise or know what's happening behind the scenes. But it's been a near-complete Bioware lull for a while now and it shall be that way until Anthem gets released, so I think there may not be enough of a financial incentive to keep the store open in oncoming months. It's not a stretch to suspect that they may relaunch it closer to February when there'd be a renewed interest in their wares. Plus, if they're changing their merchandise provider it also means that they're likely changing (most of?) their merchandise. Somebody has to design and then produce enough of this stuff to eventually sell it. It can take a while, depending on what they want to offer in their store in the future.
