I played the shit out of the original NMS to the point of total burn out. Now I can't stand to even look at videos of it. But I bet my discovered systems are still there. I named them alphabetically with "Vance" (after Jack Vance) in the name, like Alpha Vance, Beta Vance, etc. In the Euclid galaxy.

A few days old, but this IGN article really makes me want to purchase this game. Capital ships that you and your co-op partners can dock with, run around on, and fly to different systems together, freighter fleets that you can command and send out on missions for supplies and materials, being able to play as an alien species (cosmetic choice as far as this is telling me), etc.

You're prrrrobably not referring to Jack(o) Vance, the serial killer, in the novel/TV show adaptation "Wire in the Blood"... *g* (That I highly recommend!) So the name given by the first person to discover a planet will remain forever for everyone to see and somebody else can't rename it in their own game? Or can you change it but it remains the original name for the next person to discover it? In any case, I like it! I'm probably going to burn out on survival/base building within the next couple of weeks... I spend 80% of my time with Subnautica in inventory management and base building. I've now started five base and none is finished because no matter how much time I spend mining it's never enough... I should just have saved base building for creative mode. So it's my own fault. I do enjoy gathering materials in games up to a point. I hate using cheats. But eventually I always wonder why I'm wasting all my precious free time on this shit... I've yet to play a game that allows me to build stuff with friends. Not sure it will feel less like I should be doing something else with my time. Fallout 76 can't come soon enough to test this! NMS I MIGHT pick up for 20 bucks max eventually.

NMS I MIGHT pick up for 20 bucks max eventually. Wrong Vance. Jack Vance wrote a buttload of top drawer SF novels. And fantasy. And murder mysteries (as John Holbrook Vance, his actual name). Yes, unless it’s yet another thing Sean Murray lied about, you discover a system/planet, you get to name it forever. Most players don’t bother renaming anything, though, but you still get to see their name as the discoverer. Subnautica is what NMS should have been. Or at least the “main quest/campaign” anyway.

I was kind of hoping that there would be actual alien civilizations to discover instead of just scattered outposts and individual aliens with languages for you to learn very slowly how to translate. I take it that the Euclid galaxy remains pretty sparsely populated? Is it ever explained *why* we don't ever come across a solar-system-wide civilization, or even a city?

Well I broke down and bought No Man's Sky Next for the Xbox yesterday, as did one of my gaming buddies.
Despite never having played the game before, and both of us still very much being in the tutorial section, we were able to jump into each other's world without any issues. Well any issues with matchmaking at least. No Man's Sky is very bare bones on instructions and my friend and I each died of exposure several times before we could get our bearings and make our way to our conjoined crash site. Working in tandem, we quickly gathered all the necessary materials needed to repair our ships and then blasted off into space.
It is here that the scale of the game impressed me, as well as my annoyance with the ship controls. Despite only being in a single solar system, it was still saying that traveling at normal speeds would take us over six hours to reach the nearest space station. After a little asteroid mining however, we were able to pulse jump to the star base, though the aforementioned controls were fighting me the whole way. I wouldn't say it was game breaking, and by the end of the session I was growing accustomed to flying, but it was a tad disappointing that one can't remap the control scheme. Anyways, we reached the space station and finally were able to have access to character customization.
Here I was massively impressed with the Next update. I knew that cosmetic alterations were possible for the initial 'space suit' look, but I was not expecting to see all the various alien races being present as well, and each having the same level of customization depth that the default model had. My friend opted to go with a quasi Starlord homage while I converted my appearance to one of the Gek species, one who vaguely resembled a midget version of Donatello. After messing around with character customization for about twenty minutes we bid farewell to the space station and traveled back down to the moon of our initial planet.
Unlike the volcanic world we started on, this moon was a frozen world covered in snow so it was a nice change of pace for our planetary excursions. Making landfall at the designated location we each followed the story objectives to the point where we got access to the base building mechanic. Granted our access consisted of being able to build wooden shacks in an arctic wilderness, but the system was easy enough to employ. The only thing I found issue with was how once placed the structures were permanent. Oh sure, you could delete them, but it would not refund you the resources spent in it's construction so if one made a mistake on wall or ceiling placement (of which I made several) you would have to delete the object and rebuild it from scratch. Anyways, we ended the night having established our minor mining outpost next to a sizable copper deposit.
All in all, I am rather impressed with the game, it certainly seems miles ahead of what was available at launch.

I never played NMS before this week. 3rd Person is mandatory for me, and the game seemed to lack depth. Fast forward 2 years, and the depth, variety and quality seemingly had each been added (free of charge). I bought the game this week and have really been enjoying it. I’ve put in about 10 hours so far, alternately focused and meandering gameplay. It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve run into a few players who have dropped into my game, presumably by choosing the random matchmaking option. I’ll go into more detail later when I’m not posting from my phone. (WTF happened to usability of the site while I was away?)
I saw the question of price reiterated a few times, so I’ll restate this: every update since launch, including NEXT, has been free. There are no plans for microtransactions or paid DLC; just more ongoing, free support. They may've under-delivered at release, but they’ve slowly shaped this into a high-value, enjoyable title. I’m on PS4 and got the game over 50% off this week. I’m sure PC has some offer going via Steam or whatnot.

I don’t really follow HG or Sean Murray, mostly because of their epic misrepresentation of the game pre-launch. That said, I thought they’d remained pretty silent since those days, keeping their heads down and putting much needed work into the game. I saw the NEXT news via my preferred gaming outlets and did some research. It looked good, finally, so I’m giving the game a go for the first time. Skepticism is understandable given Murray’s history, but I’m finding the game to be exactly as represented. It looks as good on PS4 Pro as in the trailer, so presumably stunning on PC. The new features are all as advertised. (The features added before NEXT were all easily gleaned by reading/viewing others’ gameplay experience over the last two years.) It’s not a perfect game. I’ve already found a few things I’d do differently. It has been fun, though, and I’m still barely out of poverty/starter mode. I look forward to the freedom and expanded options better ships and tech will soon bring.

The fact that Hello Games has made each patch and update, two of which amount to entirely new game expansions, completely free of charge to everyone, new and old owners of the game, goes a long way to mending fences. Frankly, I don't understand how they can afford to stay in business and continue to do this. If they had been charging for all of those updates, you'd have a point. In a sense, it's like the opposite of Star Citizen.

There were so many times Murray kept stringing people along. I never fell for it because the premise was impossible - making that many worlds interesting to explore, all with a dozen developers. Sony and the gaming media share some of the blame since they were the hype engine for Hello Games. The whole thing is just absurd.

Frankly, I don't understand how they can afford to stay in business and continue to do this. If they had been charging for all of those updates, you'd have a point. In a sense, it's like the opposite of Star Citizen. They have a very small team and never allowed the game to truly hit the bargain bin. The cheapest I've ever seen it is about 50% off during sales. The sustained income, however modest, was apparently enough to keep the small team working. While the launch was an epic disaster, I actually approve of the approach they've taken since: Keep working and deliver on the promises we made. Most big studios and their greedy publishers would've cut bait and tried to bury the game and controversy. (MEA?) I think it's interesting that such an infamous failure has now become a positive example in how to support a game long term, and how to keep your word to your customers. I've been posting positive stuff about my experience with the game, but now it's time to report an issue. Update 1.51 released overnight on the PSN. It completely bugged out my game. I fell through a landing pad on my frigate and nearly died in space. While landing on a planet, my hauler flipped upside down and rolled through the ground before righting itself and allowing a second landing attempt. My frame rate plummeted planetside (felt like MEA all over again, running in slow motion). As I took off to travel elsewhere, the game slowed further and crashed. I've read that each large expansion has required 5 or 6 patches to get everyone running optimally. This was a huge update, so I'm not surprised. It's frustrating to have my gameplay bugged so quickly, but I'll be patient. (It was running flawlessly for me on PS4 Pro before the patch.) They have a small team, so I don't expect quite as much as I would from a team 10 to 15 times larger. What I've played has been fun. We'll see if the fun continues or not as they attempt to squash some bugs. Before the bugs, I'd finally been making real headway from Space Bum to Affluent Space Bum. I found an A Class hauler crashed on a world. It was nice, but would've cost a fortune to repair. I got it flying, took it to a Space Station and swapped for a C Class hauler in perfect repair. Nearly doubling my cargo slots will help me. I really like my hauler's look. It's a big green monster that I've renamed "Grasshopper". I'm also making money off of my Freighter Fleet of 2 (freighter and one frigate). If they get the bugs squashed, my financial situation should snowball in the right direction. I was also making headway in the two main stories. I hope I get to resume soon.

Frankly, I don't understand how they can afford to stay in business and continue to do this. They sold a metric fuckton of games at launch because of the overhype which was being fanned by various elements of the gaming media. Sure, that stopped fairly quickly after people started realizing that this wasn't the product that was promised. Some probably requested a refund on Steam, but even more people didn't have that option since the game probably takes more than two hours just to get into. I'd say that on some level I appreciate the fact that they didn't just say "fuck it", and washed their hands off the whole project, but on the other hand this is just them fulfilling some of their promises. (and they kinda needed to do that if they hoped to be taken seriously by anyone ever again) I suppose that it says something fairly depressing about gaming when people are being congratulated merely for that. Who's congratulating them? The consensus seems to be amazement that they are still in business, and managed some updates that weren't total wastes of time, instead of curling up and dying after the blowback. And the death threats.

Does anyone here who plays No Man's Sky actually rename the planets, animals, plants, etc or just leave them with what they get? I rename my ships and name my bases. "Noble Gnat" is my tiny starting shuttle. "Grasshopper" was my big, green hauler. (The bug thing is coincidental, rather than planned. I saw a tiny gnat and a big green locust when looking at them. Someday, I'll get a beautiful exotic vessel and will make sure it has a dignified, badass name. I guess I like the name to fit the personality of the ship. I don't rename planets, animals, etc... but I think it's cool that we can. It's a great feature for a game about discovery. I can only see myself renaming a planet if I stumble upon one of the pop culture references in the game. There are apparently worlds named after other games and the like. I'd rename something like that with a more conventional, scientific name. Some people find worlds that look just like their real life homes. One guy named a desert world Arizona because of its mirroring his desert home. That's pretty cool, and I'd chuckle and appreciate if I found something like that. Who's congratulating them? The consensus seems to be amazement that they are still in business, and managed some updates that weren't total wastes of time, instead of curling up and dying after the blowback. And the death threats. Yeah, I don't see any reason to hold a grudge or punish someone who has clearly learned their lesson. They were duly hammered at launch for under-delivering on Sean's overly ambitious ideals and promises. Since then, though, Sean has been silent and the team has kept improving the game. Two years on, it's pretty much what Sean had people anticipating at launch. It's a good game, and they didn't ask for more money to keep the lights on while improving it. They took their lumps and tried to deliver what they'd first envisioned and promised. Now, with no end in sight to their support for the game, it's great to see NMS' resurgence. Their humility and hard work are being rewarded. Plus, I now have a really fun, new game to play. I deleted my first PT about 12 hours into it. It was on Normal difficulty, since I thought it might be best to learn the game test way. Dumb decision. I never play on Normal and shouldn't have wasted my time. Restarting on Survivor, I'm about 10 hours into it. It's been a very simlar experience, thus far, but improved. Though the enemies are supposed to be tougher, I'm actually much better at space combat. Its so dramatic that I wonder if recent patches bumped up my weapons damage. Dogfights are fun, now, since I can actually damage my targets. Planetside, Sentinels are a nuisance. On Survivor, the little bastards are tougher and often more aggressive. Pretty much every garden world has "Extreme" Sentinel presence. It's going to allow me to easily nab that trophy for surviving extreme worlds. While the on-screen updates can be a bit untimely and annoying. I really enjoy the Milestones. It's fun to see the numerous stats being tracked and to see my accomplishments and time in-game being acknowledged. I guess it helps make exploration itself feel like an achievement. I'm making money slightly more quickly in this Survivor PT. Part of that might be my better grasp on the game. Some of it, though, has been circumstance. I started in a tough system with hostile but resource-rich worlds. My second system has been the same. I'm still visiting unexplored planets/moons in that system before continuing the Artemis storyline. It would probably be much smarter to advance it a bit and come back, but I like exploring and have a hard time leaving entire worlds "undiscovered". I also had a very difficult time backtracking in my first brief PT, so I have a fear of missing out in this one. (The galaxy map couldn't be more shit-tastic or unwieldy. I can't believe it's in a game, let alone a game that's been updated so significantly for two years. It needs a total rework.) I'd have even more hours in Survivor if not for crashes. 1.53 rolled out thus evening for PS4. I played for maybe 45 minutes before crashing and calling it a night. Fortunately, I'd just deployed my little portable save beacon, so I only list about 10 minutes of progress. With such a massive update as NEXT, and a team of 14, bugs are to be expected. Updates are coming more than once per week, which is amazing for so small a team. The game will truly shine for me once it's completely stable. I can nevef really tell if it's going to crash, at the moment (on PS4 Pro). Sometimes I'm in space, other times on a planet's surface. Tonight, I was exploring a massive (and beautiful) cave complex on a highly irradiated world when it crashed. 😖 I'll reload tomorrow and see what happens. Sometimes crashes are annoyingly frequent, while other times I can play for hours without issues.

I played some more of this game over the weekend. It was both great and terrible. I’ve already posted in another thread, so I’m going to lazily copy-paste that into this post.
I played a bit more NMS this weekend. I made a couple million units (cash) harvesting rare materials during my exploration. Stealing eggs from crazy xenomorphs was the most lucrative at 95K per egg. Then, I warped to a new system and saw an amazing looking Class-B Explorer craft. I traded for it and named it “Odanata-1” because it reminded me so much of a damselfly.(I always seem to think of bugs when looking at these ships.) I started exploring the new, extremely inhospitable system when one of the main quest lines disappeared from my log. Yep, I’d found another bug.
I really want to love this game. It’s a lot of fun to explore these worlds; keep an eye out for cool new ships; and always work toward bigger and better things. There always seems to be a game-breaking bug, though, introduced with every patch. I lost 2 hours of gameplay yesterday, including my exciting new ship. It’s a real momentum-killer, and it happens basically every time I play. They’ll likely work out all of the bugs in the next couple of months, but will I still want to play? Spider-Man is starting to look pretty good, and other games will follow. When will NMS be in a truly playable state? I know I’ll be drawn back to it at some point. I hope it’s working at that time. The unfortunate reality is that I want to play it now, and it isn’t truly playable.
The game is a lot of fun when it works correctly. They’ve added a ton of stuff that makes it the game it should’ve been by all accounts in 2016. I can’t recommend it, though— at least not on PS4 Pro— at this time. Too many damn bugs that cause constant back-tracking or worse.

I'm getting lonely exploring all these planets by myself. Any Bioware fans out there want to join me? I'm super addicted to NMS right now. Join me before I burn out!
