A nice video on painting a nice picture, by a guy I quite like. Seeing how old he has become is a reminder that I myself has aged. How time flies and how cruel it is.
Mark Carder is not your usual YouTuber. He's a well recognized artist and teacher who has painted commissioned portraits of Ronald Reagan and George W Busch. And I have posted videos by him before in this thread.

I am rather pleased how my 'Flower Table' has turned out. The Raw Materials for the table. Empty Coffee canisters, scrap lumber from pallets and some plywood from last year. The finished product. Next week or so I will get to the garden center and buy the flowers, still too cool here just yet. I'll post another photo when the flowers are in and the table is outside in the back yard.

Flower table, flowers added. With good plant feeding and sun there should end up being a lot more flowers for some of the pots as the summer goes on.

I made a log lamp. My first attempt, so I screwed a few things up but it works. Always lessons to be learned the first time you attempt something. The log is from a cutting off my pear tree, so it is pear tree wood. The log is impeded in a resin base and then small wood blocks under the base to give it some cord clearance. This one I left the bark on for that rustic look, the 2nd one I am working on I am removing the bark and just having a wood stand. It will be a cutting of a maple tree in my yard.

TL/DR I made a map of THEDAS coffee table. Story: There is a derelict house a few houses down from me (why it has not been demo'd and repurposed I have no idea.), I noticed a junked coffee table laying on it's side near the alley (cheap Walmart special table) it had two of it's legs kicked or broken off and there it lay. I looked at it as I passed by a few days and thought, 'that top actually looks pretty solid I think I can do something with that.' But then again do I really need more junk wood? So I left it, finally a few days later as I was weed whacking near the back of my house I think, 'Screw it, if it is still there I am taking it.' So I walked down the alley and grabbed the table top and broken legs and brought them back to my garage/wood shop. Now what to do with it, then I recalled thinking of making a map table top a few years ago so I chose a map of THEDAS. The existing top would not due for art work so I cut some 3/4 inch plywood the same shape as the top. I then sanded it (as it was rough) and stained it to bring out the wood grain. Next came the tough work, transposing a map onto it. I used the grid method for transposing a small map onto the large table top. (Same number of Grids on paper map I got from the internet and grid-lines drawn on the table top. Grid by grid I used a pencil to draw features and names and such. Once that was done I used acrylic paints to paint over the pencil lines. Once all painting was done I gave it about 3 coats of a glossy protection varnish finish. Just the table top: Table top attached to table:

Amazing how much can be done (and is) with models.
The 1:32 scale model of the F/A-18 Hornet apparently sold real well. The film team scoured model shops all over the world and bought any they found.

I put some stuff in the ground and it had the indecency to start growing. I have a tiny tiny tiny little (very small) bit of soil between buildings. 'Bout 2sq meters. Potato plants in back, green onions and garlic out front. Something that I originally did not intend to take seriously has grown out of proportion. Aaaand I don't know a think about gardening. I've been throwing water and vague looks of astonishment at it and it seems to be working. Any suggestions about what to do next or what I've done wrong would be appreciated. Here're two pics of the garden itself. Last pic is of a lonely potato plant in another corner that started out doing surprisingly well but looks like it's giving-up-the-ghost. Any way to save it?

I made a fibre optics log lamp. The optics were moving around due to my air conditioner in the 2nd image thus the bit of blur. The fibres actually have about 6 colours that you can set them to or have them cycle through. It just so happens that in these photos it was on purple for both images.

I think you did a great job. Concidering it's your first, and the fact that you didn't use an airbrush, it really looks great. Good photography too. I was expecting you to ace it, because you're a painter and because of your extensive knowledge in paints. I do have one nitpick though, lest you get too cocky! The tracks look too clean. And as you know, tracks are always rusty, grimy and muddy. You could probably still add some weathering if you want? Thanks for sharing this!

Also, randomly looking at pics/gifs I could use to spruce up this post I found something kinda random. A guy uses marmite to weather his tracks. *** Oh wait, I know what's missing, speed-holes...

And as you know, tracks are always rusty, grimy and muddy. You could probably still add some weathering if you want? Thanks for sharing this! Thank you. I'm happy with the model. I watched a lot of YouTube videos about modelling. I've been an artist, tinkerer and engineer all my life, so this did sort of fall right up my alley. ๐คIn fact, the only tools I needed to buy for this, were three tweezers and a glue applicator. The rest, pliers, scalpels, files, brushes, loupe-glasses, I already owned. Ironically, I don't need the glue applicator and probably never will - maybe for ships and photo etch -, and tweezers are of surprisingly little use. Once or twice they were indispensable, but most of the time you couldn't get a good enough grip or enough control with them. Piece of sticky tape or finger nail and finger tip is usually superior. I made many mistakes, but as long as you can save it, it's okay. And the mistakes were okay too, because this project was mainly about learning the craft. And it takes more than this, but it's a good beginning. Airbrush... I'm not going to deal with that environmental and health problem. It's not worth it. I rather relax and take my time with a paint brush. It should be possible to get a very good finish with brush. The Panzer II is covered with 4 thin coats. I feel that many of the problems I had came from not degreasing enough and needing a Humbrol primer. Things are going much better with the Mathilda now. The Vallejo model color binds good enough and forms a good surface. I don't think airbrush can do better on small details (I'm still building the wheel constructs currently), and we'll see on bigger surfaces, but I'm in a good mood about it. The model was photographed outdoors in shadow and daylight. That's always the best way to portray items. You have a soft, even, natural white light, and enough of it to get a good exposure. While this project was, and is, part of a learning project, as preparation for building a couple of huge aircraft models, it's now also part of another new project: A collection of WW2 tanks. The kit was such a beauty that I got a kick out of it. ๐คฉ These scale model kits are amazing things in themselves. I think I purchased the right Panzer II kit by mistake. I would maybe not have been as impressed by the older, simpler kit. Dirtying the tracks? Maybe... I'll think about it.

Eeh, no I wouldn't call myself a sketcher. I could probably do with the regular training though. That Hell Hound would take me many attempts to get rendered out like that. I only draw when I feel I need to in planning/preparing a more ambitious painting, or am drawing something fundamentally a drawing, like comics & cartoon style. And I only sketch when I'm searching for something, shapes, faces, perspectives, over and over again until I'm happy with it, then I do the drawing based on it. But lately, I mostly just start painting, without drawing. That's actually quite easy with landscape/nature subjects. Portrait would take some drawing.

So here it is, my first tank model. (Though I did break off the parts and glued together the parts to a Sherman, when I was a kid. Much smaller scale than 1:35 and a simple kit.) The Tamiya 1:35 PanzerKpfWg II ausf. A (Tamiya have two different Panzer II. This is the later, modern kit, that retails at three times the cost of the old.) Your first and already a pro I knew it.

So here it is, the Tamiya 1:35 Mathilda Mk. III/IVNow I'll unpack the Grant. Will be interesting to compare Airfix kit to Tamiya. It does look just as good though. Again an excellent job. I prefer Tamiya over Airfix. And good luck with your Grant I bet it will be a pro job again.

I prefer Tamiya over Airfix. And good luck with your Grant I bet it will be a pro job again. Thanks. I've started the Grant build, so what I can say is that moldings seem to have a greater release angle. And the tolerances are quite big for parts assembly where there don't need to be any precision. I doubt any of that will show in the final model though. But there are more obvious seems/parting lines that need scraping or filing. Another thing is that many parts are crudely void of any fine detail. But this, I believe, could probably be authentic. There's a long YouTube video that shows M3 production and a lot of parts were just burned out from plate stock with acetylene torches following a template. So very simple. Edit: P.S. A thing of concern is the vinyl tracks. There is a crazy scheme of them coupling together by melting down some rivet heads with a hot screwdriver. Unfortunately, this is something I recognize from the Sherman I built as a kid. It didn't work out then so I can't imagine it will this time. I plan to try to glue it instead. I'll experiment with different glues on the vinyl sprue. I have one, intended for repairing shoes, synthetic material shoes, that is extremely sticky, tough, strong and slightly elastic. It might just work. P.S.2 No. This kit is really nice too. (Except the vinyl tracks) Release angle was only on some flat parts, and they probably wanted to avoid ejectors. Fit is fine. Detail looks fine and occasional scarceness is almost certainly authentic.
