I figured we missed a thread like this. Long videos are welcome, as is discussion. For the rest, I hope the subject matter is self explanatory. There will be a companion thread "Technology & crafts", which aims at a slightly different flavor.

Steve Cronin is a British high-speed, watercolor artist. His Youtube content is like an indie- watercolor version of Bob Ross He does a painting in like 20 to 35 minutes. His subject matter are modest, unspectacular, muted landscapes. His palette has a very limited range. While Bob Ross was a more professional entertainer, I think I respect Cronin's art more.

Another 'ridiculous' Japanese craft. Urushi lacquer work. Urushi is a natural (from a plant) phenolic resin (like Epoxy, Polyurethane) which have been used for a very long time. It's quite toxic and requires a licence/permit to work with or purchase. It hardens (polymerizes) with water vapour + heat (same as some polyurethanes). Pens like this cost $3000 - $15000. The "lower cost", are made to be used (whether they will be is another thing). Those around $10000 are not. Not really.

Another classic Japanese craft: Ukiyo-e, wood block carving and printing.
One of the premium (some would say 'the') exponents of this art of carving today is Canadian born David Bull. What's more important is that he has written the books on this craft (no one else ever had) which is rather crucial for the survival of the tradition, since the old system of apprenticeship is wiped out and the old masters have died of old age.
Here's a few videos from the process of making an, IMO, attractive print, 'Fox Moon'.

This thread title is used in my work. Arts&Crafts is the name we give to any project that requires some precision and construction. This can be anything from building an electrical adapter to making a snoot for a lamp, to cutting gels for flourescent tubes. It is usually a pain in the ass, and it takes some skill. I get to do these jobs often, as a middle manager. This is an example. I needed to power 3 refrigeration units, but did not have all the materials I needed to do this properly. The budget on the show was tight, so I Rube Goldberg'd a solution. What you see is a small L6-20 220v distro box. That has a ground and two hot conductors to feed to a 3 pin connector. I needed a neutral as well for this application, so I added a neutral wire fed from the system neutral and taped it to the L6-20 feeder, installed the four wires into an L14-30 connector, and powered the unit. For those who understand electricity - this is not electrically correct. I am feeding a 30a device with 20a cable and a 30a neutral. This is however, show business. I did careful load calculation and determined that at worst case, the largest unit pulled 21amp on one leg and 19 on another, and the breaker held. That was with the 150w lightbulb inside on - I replaced with a lower wattage enclosure-rated LED and brought that under 20a. Arts & Crafts

What I really got a kick out of, in this short and highly edited video, is the amount of meticulous planning and preparations. That is something I can relate to.

The "Kelpies" at Falkirk, Scotland is one of my favourite pieces of modern sculpture. The two steel horses heads are the largest equine sculptures in the world standing at 100ft/30m tall and weighing more than 300 tonnes each. The works of art, created by artist Andy Scott, have become iconic on the landscape after being modelled on real-life icons of times gone by - Clydesdale horses Duke and Baron. The Kelpies represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges and coal ships that shaped the geographical layout of the town of Falkirk.
The Kelpie
A kelpie is a shape-changing aquatic spirit of Scottish legend. Its name may derive from the Scottish Gaelic words ‘cailpeach’ or ‘colpach’, meaning heifer or colt. Kelpies are said to haunt rivers and streams, usually in the shape of a horse. But beware…these are malevolent spirits! The kelpie may appear as a tame pony beside a river. It is particularly attractive to children – but they should take care, for once on its back, its sticky magical hide will not allow them to dismount! Once trapped in this way, the kelpie will drag the child into the river and then eat him.
These water horses can also appear in human form. They may materialize as a beautiful young woman, hoping to lure young men to their death. Or they might take on the form of a hairy human lurking by the river, ready to jump out at unsuspecting travellers and crush them to death in a vice-like grip. Kelpies can also use their magical powers to summon up a flood in order to sweep a traveller away to a watery grave. The sound of a kelpie’s tail entering the water is said to resemble that of thunder. And if you are passing by a river and hear an unearthly wailing or howling, take care: it could be a kelpie warning of an approaching storm.
But there is some good news: a kelpie has a weak spot – its bridle. Anyone who can get hold of a kelpie’s bridle will have command over it and any other kelpie. A captive kelpie is said to have the strength of at least 10 horses and the stamina of many more, and is highly prized. It is rumoured that the MacGregor clan have a kelpies bridle, passed down through the generations and said to have come from an ancestor who took it from a kelpie near Loch Slochd.

Not sure about the restoration (methinks the retouching was a bit clumsy, but okay he's no artist), but a good video.
The paints, he use for the final retouching, are special Mastic based paints, specially developed for restoration. Mastic is natural resin, used together with oil paints for centuries. Unlike oil paints, they dissolve with turpentine or white spirit (possibly with alcohol as well? ...don't know), so are removable. ...Which is the point.

Almost forgot to post this. This guy is so good that he must thoroughly enjoy painting with oils. Imagine having that amount of confidence and virtuosity. Noteworthy is how he nails the values. This is really the hard trick in painting.

More Vladimir Volegov. To me, it's pure pleasure to watch Volegov paint. It's just the directness and sureness of everything. I saw an old movie where there was this young dude making money by doing very accurate pastel portraits of people on the street. Fast. In less than half an hour. That young guy was Vladimir.
Anyway, here's a short timelapsed and edited video of him doing a commissioned portrait.

People interested in restoration techniques can surf on links on their own, but I wanted to link in this too, because it's a very difficult restoration: A painting on paper glued to wood.

I wanted to post this video as a contrast to Volegov. Volegov paints in a technique called a la prima. Which means he splashes in the color directly, until the values have come out right (which it does immediately for him), then works detail and smoothing. Palumbo uses a layered technique, with an underpainting, then applies transparent layers over, and finally finishes with blending in opaque colors for highlights. And adds definition with details of course.

The level and extreme sophistication that the "worst" scale modelers have brought their hobby to, is mind blowing. I don't know what else to say. This just way beyond most crafts. I don't what to even think about how much the guy spent on after market detail parts. Cheque book modelling at it's finest.
